Ampere estimates that Death Stranding 2 sold 1.4M copies by the end of June (slower start than DS1 in physical sales, but digital has been stronger)

I think also the game must be a pretty good system seller.

The core audience may be narrower than other tentpole releases but I'd wager it moved quite its share of upgrades to PS5 pro (like I did) or new acquisition of PS5 just to play it.

Game will have very long legs. Not only with highly positive reviews, but two different films, one live action and the other anime, are greenlit to come out in next few years

As reported by The Game Business (via Wccftech), data firm Ampere estimates that Death Stranding 2 sold 1.4 million copies by the end of June. While the game didn't perform as strongly as the first Death Stranding in terms of physical sales across Europe, digital sales have been much stronger this time.

Christopher Dring of The Game Business also shared an update on X/Twitter, saying, "Death Stranding 2 was No.1 in the UK physical charts last week. Its launch sales were 66% lower than Death Stranding 1… but different eras." Dring added, "It's a far more digital market today. It's 33% lower than Astro Bot's launch, but that was also a physical-heavy release, too."

Death Stranding 2 Is Reported To Have Sold 1.3 Million Copies in June 2025

hhhhhmmmm is it just me or that kinda puts it in like a huge flop zone? Because I don't imagine this game having insane legs and selling 5 million by the end of the year you either were excited for it or you might pick it up on a sale to see what the fuzz is about, this is very concerning numbers.

Can't wait for the cult to come in and explain how the game have virtually no marketing and it was made with the same budget Alexey Pajitnov had on Tetris.

Is the same source… Nothing new, just an estimate.

Dear lord, have some fucking introspection.

Is that all? I fully expected it to sell at least 3-4 million given the backing that Sony gave it and with Hideo Kojima attached to it as well. Hopefully this means that the PC/Xbox/NW2 versions of the game won't that far away.

Bro, you thought this game would sell 3-4 million in ONE WEEK?!?! Come on.......some of yall can't even hide it anymore. There's no world where a game like this making $100 million in revenue in one week is considered "BAD".

Yeah actually, this game has the biggest marketing behind it, massive Hollywood stars, probably the biggest or at least the most famous game developer and this game is right up his alley and so its not like Kojima just made a gatcha game and is shocked no one bought it, and it is on the most popular console in the market, so yes it should have moved a 3-4 million easily and no amount of laughing emojis can hide how you truly feel.

I can't tell who is being serious anymore. I hope you are joking.

"As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold through over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC."

It launched in 2019.

The first game cost around $80-90 million to make (not including marketing). That's back when Koji Pro had around 80 devs. The now have 120 devs, so this game probably cost $150 million to make if you don't include marketing. And clearly you have no idea that Sony is Publishing the game, so it's not like they are paying 30% to some storefront. They are the storefront.

Those figures you pulled out of your magic hat because no offical number has ever been announced as of today, and who is even talking about taking a %30 cut here? The game has a full ensemble of Hollywood cast, has the best graphics on modern consoles and a fully licensed sound track and you think it cost $150 million? You sound like one of those people who call astrobot a massive hit even though it sold 3.2 million

The game doesn't need to generate 350mil in sales revenue to break even, probably only 2.5mil full priced sales. It should have strong legs too, not just because of great critical and user reviews, but two films are coming out in next few years, which should drive engagement. Plus, it will surely be nominated for GOTY, probably around the same time it releases on PC

This game's budget is at the very least $200m, it definitely has a $100m marketing budget at the very least, to break even it needs to sell at least 6 million at full price, and if you think that a game this caliber is out there to break even then you are very wrong it is their 2025 flagship even above Ghost of Yotai. This is a proper and obvious underperformance.

Astrobot probably cost less than 50mil to develop. How is 180mil sales revenue in 60 months not a massive success? The new Doom game, which is available everywhere, including gamepass, had 3mil players within the first week. Only 1mil in actual sales.

I love DS2, but so many mechanics are copy and pasted from the first game. I would be shocked if it cost more than 200mil. The graphics are great but nothing crazy

It's definitely not above Ghost of Yotei. Tsushima sold 2.4mil within 3 days of launch. Death Stranding is not some massive franchise. Before this week, the peak Steam count was 8000 players. Ghost of Tsushima has a peak Steam count of 75,000

Even if DS2 breaks even(which it won't), it is not a huge deal. Just Sony having Kojima connected to their brand is huge for them. Kojima's Productions next game, Physint, will probably gangbusters as its not a niche genre like Death Stranding. Sony will surely have a similar exclusive window too
