Heh, yeah. Sucks if you're a Citi customer, and I can't imagine what UPS' excuse is going to be. They tell the plebeians like you and me to go to hell, but the army of lawyers that Citi could send their way would make John Ashcroft cower in a fetal position.

word.

I guess all that everyone can hope is that they get retrieved from the investigation, or someone comes across them and turns it in. :(

But it's personal information! It's POWER. And what's power if you can't use it however you damn well please?

Besides, the guys setting up the overarching internal rules governing this have 7 figure golden parachutes out of the burning plane...

Far be it for me to be in support of massive collections of personal data, but given the credit-driven society the U.S. has become, it can't be helped. The problem is securing the data, and to be honest I'd rather it be transported over some juiced-up sneakernet than sent over the public internet to an off-site backup system.

Data transported like this should be encrypted first, and if it isn't the company should be liable for any identity theft that occurs.

Maybe after these debacles, credit card companies and banks will care more about personal rights and not store all this shit...

:lol

Seriously, that sucks for Citi members but there needs to be shit done and it involves less personal data and more security.

Doesn't look like it affects Citicard credit card holders.

...This time.

Thank god, I just switched over to thier Citi Rewards card last month.

I am shocked that UPS lost a package. ::rolleyes::

My company sent out 2 50 pound bearings in a wood crate for repair (Custom item, they were about 10k each). UPS lost one! Never did find it. How the hell do you lose a 50 lb bearing sealed in a wood crate?

That's the additional set of people screwed in the loss :) Those folks are an infinitely small percentage of the 3.9 million people's records that they lost who had active credit accounts :)

What you really need to ask yourself is

Citigroup said its missing tapes were shipped from Weehawken, New Jersey, on May 2. It said it first learned of a possible problem on May 20 when Experian called to request a tracking number.

The bank said Experian and UPS advised it on May 24 that they could not locate the tapes. Citigroup said it notified the U.S. Secret Service on May 27 after an internal investigation. That agency did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Why the hell did 18 DAYS go by before they realize they'd lost the data and why did it take 25 days - almost an entire month before the secret service is notified. If you haven't noticed it was missing in 18 days, what the hell is your internal investigation going to show? Clearly you didn't have anyone on the other end actually responsible for receiving the data/ confirming that it arrived! There is absolutely no excuse for this. None at all, this is just irresponsibility in effect.
