Yup, looks like the HD 2.

Hmmm, if this is the real deal as the engadget tipster says, i find it interesting that the screenshot is showing pre 2.0 icons. Could be wrong but i would have thought that all future HTC Android handsets would be at least 2.1 or above. The screenshot isn't great but i'm not getting a high resolution vibe either, which i'd expect from a handset with a 4.3 inch screen. Really don't like those buttons or the touch of red.

HTC Sense replaces all the icons anyways, so it's hard to know.

Sense doesn't necessarily replace all those icons, i might be wrong but there isn't any HTC handset officially running on anything greater than 1.6 is there? (with the exception of the Nexus One, which doesn't count) Plus there isn't that 3d effect on the all programs screen that you'd expect from 2.1. I'm not discounting that this is the real deal, but i'm very very sceptical, especially as there are rumours that HTC is purposely leaking false info. You can understand why people would want Android in the HD2/Leo's body, it'd an amazing device albeit hamstrung by WinMo 6.5.

Like mentioned above, I would imagine since it's Sense, it wouldn't have the 3d effect. And this a pre-production model, so obviously the only thing we can derive is that the thing exists.

Last year I was working on a role-playing game, but I put that aside. Right now I'm working on a platformer for GAF Creates 2 with an 8-bit art style using the Rokon Android Game Engine.

Cool. I'll keep an eye on your work.

Yeah you probably have a point. Hopefully MWC will enlighten us all a bit more. I would like them to go with the 3D effect though, certainly makes the OS look a little more attractive even if it adds no real functionality. I think with 2.1 on the Nexus One, Sense is starting to show it's age a little - i prefer the look of the Nexus Ones bottom 'bar' (though it's not really a bar) plus the little graphical flourishes. Where sense still beats vanilla Android though is the facebook/contacts integration and some of the widgets - but the gap isn't what it once was.

Thanks, but I haven't exactly finished many of my endeavors. So... don't get too hopeful. :lol In fact the only projects I've finished are web designs, and I attribute that to the extremely agile aspect of deploying things on the web.

Still I'm really excited about this project and I've learned a lot from my stalled projects. I've cut out things that can snag me, and I'm limiting myself on the content (5 worlds of 3 levels each, 15 total levels.) The art is 8-bit because I'm not much of an artist, but I can create decent sprites if I iterate on them enough. But that's really time consuming.

Is the Cliq any good? I mean, I don't like the BLUR service and from what I've seen on youtube, it looks really slow and sluggish. I mean even more sluggish than my HTC Magic was prior to the Sense update. Like normal navigation felt really slow and thats what the Cliq looks like it suffers from to me. But, is the phone really like that?

I'm happy with my Magic, but I really want a physical QWERTY so that's why I'm wondering. Too bad its not out in Canada yet (right?).

Don't think it's out in Canada yet. I heard speed was OK, Chojin knows better than I do. Though from second-hand reports it seems the Cliq has the best keyboard of any Android device so far, which is something.

What about the Droid? Isn't that available where you are? It's certainly the best Android handset with a physical keyboard to date according to most reviews/users.

I'd love a Droid, but it's not available and definitely not within my budget :(
The only way I can get it within my budget is on a 3 data plan and that's just gonna make my wallet cry.

Will Sprint finally get a good phone? They have their head so far up their ass it is amazing. They are pushing that 4g router like it is the second coming, but they don't give a shit about the phones. I'll be amazed if they come out with something halfway decent. Atleast now I know to get a HTC phone on Sprint so atleast I'll have nice rom upgrades from XDA:lol Sprint will probably be bought out by Verizon or someone else pretty soon though so maybe my next purchase can last me until the company shuts down. Why can't they just open their network to all cdma phones like Verizon and MetroPCS does?

I'm enjoying my Cliq and i really hate the MotoBlur's widget apps as for some reason it does make the phone kinda sluggish after a while... the idea behind the widget's are good but is just not well implemented i.e. all status updates for facebook, myspace and twitter are loaded into one Widget app and it takes forever to scroll through if you get lot's of messages. so i just unistalled those widgets and just put my shortcuts for those 3rd party apps. keyboard is either you love it or hate it as i originally hate it as i'm a fan of the G1 keyboard but i gotten used to it.

Have you ever tried to put a non-verizon cdma phone on their network? It isn't easy, they still have ESN whitelists just like Sprint.

BoboBrazil said:
Nope. I have a Sprint plan too good to give up. Been with it since early 2006.
So you just assumed Verizon was open to all CDMA phones? :p. Yeah I know they advertised as such, but they pretty much flat out lied which pisses me off because they get no flack for it.

You're gonna have to give up that SERO if you want an Android phone, unless you're talking about the employee plan in which case I'm in full agreement with you.

That is most certainly a lie. I tried a cliq in the store the other day and the keyboard is absolutely aweful. Quite possibly the worst keyboard I've ever used period.

I saw the Hero @ radio shack for $100 now. I was wondering why the price drop but now I see. Hmmm looks interesting since I'm out of my contract.

The hero is a solid phone, even more so since the first firmware update. It's significantly speedier than it was at launch and we haven't seen 2.1 yet.

The supersonic looks like hot shit though. I'm jumping in on that (Wi-max?? hell yes) the second it's out

Not sure if this openness will ever comeback and bite the OS in the butt. I'm not a developer, so I don't know anything how secure the OS is. I just hope it is.

It's really secure. The worst things that could happen without some serious, serious hackery are:

- An app using the NDK crashes and your phone requires a hard reboot
- The app crashes, standard Not Responding error
- Phishing/fake app attempts

That's about it. Everything is in it's own virtual machine, completely isolated and sandboxed. To be honest, I was thinking about it the other week and Android is probably the best-designed OS out there (API/security-wise) right now. The API is so rich, but it's still very secure. By the very nature of it, Google will also probably make Chrome OS virtually unhackable (no malware, spyware, etc.) Hackers always find a way but it'll be even better than the PS3 lasted when it comes to security.

Awesome to hear. Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I read about the whole phishing thing with some of the banking apps a few weeks back. But the echo system of the market place actually caught that rather quickly.

Seeing the iPad fall short of my expectations has made me semi-pumped to see when the Dell Mini 5 will come out. I want a tablet device but not something that's too big. Hopefully there will be a slew of Android tablets now that Apple has revealed their hand.

There's at least six coming up, including the Streak.

I've just caught up on some CES news and Compal's Tegra 2, Android 2.0 tablet caught my eye:

2010-01-08-compal-top2.jpg

7", good enough for some serious web browsing and Tegra 2 ensures great video watching as well. No sign of Google's apps yet, though, and the resistive screen seems pretty crappy at the moment. But it does have 3G.

---

More news on Dell's 5-inch tablet has been revealed. It runs a Snapdragon processor, two microSD slots, and a beefier 1530 mAh battery (compared to the 1300 mAh one when it first leaked.) Finally, it's been confirmed to have a 3G SIM slot.

Also, a prototype has shown up on the black market. It sheds some more light on the specs: 800x480 touchscreen, Android 1.6, 1GHz CPU, WiFi, Bluetooth, 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, and front-facing camera. It'll cost you over $1000 but that price could be due to the novelty of getting a leaked prototype unit. Hopefully that price will by chopped down significantly when it hits the US.

I should also remind you all it has a capacitive screen and Google's apps (the only tablet so far to be shown having them.)

It's an absolutely magnificent looking piece of hardware. An Android phone with a great camera and a great music/media player is really needed by the market right now. I'd would be on this day one were it not for the fact that it's running on an old version of Android. Why Sony, Why? Everything else is great, screen, 1ghz processor.........it's so frustrating that only one piece of the puzzle is missing.

EDIT:

Wait, wait wait, video says it can be updated to Eclair?!! Ok that's still not 2.1 but that might just swing it......and that UI is even sexier than i thought. I'm going through some serious tech lust right now :lol

SE said that it will be upgradable to 2.1 etc.

But that's what HTC said with the Hero, and i'm still waiting for that..

Yeah i have a Hero too, still waiting. Though the rumour is March. Mind you i've only had my Hero since November so it won't have been as long a wait for me as the early adopters.

wow it looks so unresponsive considering the iphone. I really hope they work on it. There also was a problem with detecting the right choice on the contact list. He clicked three times on it until he got the contact card.

It's still a few months away from release. The UI has already come a long way since the initial videos where it was extremely laggy and much much more unresponsive. Plently of time left to iron out the kinks ;)

HTC Espresso (?) images leak:

http://www.tmonews.com/2010/01/mytouch-slide-images-leak/

The MyTouch3G “Slide” aka HTC Espresso has gotten its fair share of blog love lately and this time, we’re getting some damn good pictures. Mr. Blurrycam, wherever you are, this is how it’s done. Pictured here is the MyTouch Slide phone albeit a definite prototype sent over by my boys at Droiddeveloper who apparently have a super ninja on the payroll. Let me first say, I’m a bit unimpressed, when I conjured up the idea of a MyTouch Slide, originally discussed as a Sidekick replacement, I had the impression/hope of a phone that didn’t look like every other sliding QWERTY phone. That being said, the keyboard looks like quite spacious and noticeably drops the trackball for a Blackberry-like trackpad that doubles as a push button. Got some word on specs as well:

1300mAHr Battery * MicroSD memory cardslot is accessible without battery removal. It is a push to insert and push to remove design. * Optical trackpad with an integrated push button. * Camera with LED flash. * 3.5 mm Headset Jack * Slide-out 4 row QWERTY keyboard * 320×480 screen resolution. * ARM11 processor

One more shot after the jump! Look for this to drop Mid-May, the 17th to be a little more exact, in Black, Red and White. Thoughts?!

i bet it has a great personality!

Am I the only one who prefers the Droid's sharp edges over the curved ends and corners of all these other Android phones? Something about it makes them look cheap imo.

I like the edges myself. But have you held a Nexus One? Pictures and videos don't do it justice. Even with the grayish industrial color, the design of the phone (mainly it's curves) make it look very high-end. It just feels and looks right.

Again, not knocking the edges on the Droid. I actually home Moto keeps making phones with similar designs.

Edit:

And the teflon back gives it a very nice soft texture to it...nothing cheap about it.

Engadget has found FCC filings for a Nexus One sporting AT&T 3G bands. It looks like Google's vision for their store, namely that it will house Android flagship phones that are available unlocked or subsidized on each carrier, is coming true.

Just saw this as well. If this happens sooner rather than later, I might bite because I don't see any phones that will really trump the N1 significantly in the near future.
