Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

Oh yeah. Oh well.

GWR every day. Had both for a couple of weeks and kept the GWR. Mostly due to aesthetics, but the battery life was a big thing too. So much better on the GWR meaning I can leave the watch face on all the time and still have two days battery. And I look at my watch without doing that big wrist movement often enough that always on is a necessity for me.

Yup love the battery life of my GWR, always on and it still gives two days

Saw BBoys post and was going to ask you all to stop mentioning the $100 thing here.

Went on Amazon France and saw a Amazon Warehouse Like New one for £108... CLOSE ENOUGH.

Ordered. Android Wear still buggered in M though, right? I'll downgrade when I get it.

Any word on the next Moto 360?

Any news on moto 360 2nd gen?
Nope. :(

Besides a mysterious Motorola device passing through Bluetooth SIG, there hasn't been any news or rumors of a second gen. The constant fire sales of the original makes me think we may hear something soon, but I really don't know when. We will definitely hear something before the Summer's up, though.
.

Edit: On a price comparison site I see it is the most popular Android Wear device here, but the two Apple Watch Sports are above it and priced at 700 dollars (38mm) or more because it hasn't been officially released here...

Any word on the next Moto 360?

Lenovo CEO told a newspaper that it will be released in the summer sometime along with new phones.

While talking to The Telegraph, Yuanqing said, "We have many new models in development with the Moto brands. So you may see in summer us launching some very exciting products, including phones and watches." This last bit points to the much anticipated successor of the Moto 360 smartwatch.

Great purchase, well done.

Asus ZenWatch 2 was announced yesterday. RENDER VIDEO

DmYELox.jpg
The Asus ZenWatch 2 is the first Android Wear-based smartwatch that comes in two sizes with different model names ZenWatch 2 (WI501Q), and ZenWatch 2 (WI502Q). These feature interchangeable 22mm strap (with a 49mm stainless steel case) and an 18mm strap (with 45mm stainless steel case) respectively, while featuring watch face dimensions of 49x41mm, and 45x37mm respectively. With various options for the ZenWatch 2, Asus clearly wants to take on Apple Watch. The stainless-steel case of the ZenWatch 2 is available in three colours (Silver, Gunmetal and Rose Gold colours) while the company has announced 18 different strap materials and colour combinations for the smartwatch.
The company has added a metal watch crown, which Asus touts is a new way to interact with the watch. The crown is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection against scratches and damage. The ZenWatch 2 now features a new magnetic charger.
Asus has also detailed a few specifications of the ZenWatch 2. It sports an unspecified Qualcomm processor, an Amoled display with 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and IP67 water resistance. The 22mm strap version comes with an optional chargeback.

The company is also touting its new Wellness app, which in conjunction with the ZenWatch 2 will make it a full-featured activity tracker. Also on board the ZenWatch 2 is an enhanced Remote Camera feature, improved from what was introduced with the ZenWatch. The new feature offers faster performance, more range, zoom capability, and the ability to switch between the phone's front and rear cameras.

No word on price. Release date is set for Q3.

I updated the SW3 to 5.1.1 and now the battery life is plummeting even with wifi and gps off. It's going to go from 100 to 0 overnight.

I do feel kind of sorry for Apple Watch owners that they don't get custom watchfaces, I'll be honest, it's the main feature of smartwatches for me. Just mixing it up every other week or so with a new face.

Currently using this one, which I particularly like given how you can customize it:

Was using Flash Clock for a long time before this, really enjoyed that one and it was surprisingly easy to read the time like that.

---

In other, unrelated, news: Spotify is coming to Android Wear this month
Wow that face looks great. I've been pretty partial to the Google fit face ever since it came out. Very simple.

It seems to have settled down now: Only 8% battery drain overnight, pretty impressive. It really can get 3 days battery at a push.

The whole device is a performance issue.

Power shouldn't be an issue:
smartwatch-benchm1ark.001.jpg

I have a feeling it could be the coding. 'All the other' devices are powered by S400s and it could be Wear is primarily designed for them. It could be a change of making the OS better for OoO CPUs. Either way it is nice to see Motorola try to keep the Moto 360 running well. It's really great to see its performance get better in patches instead of them just ditching it for the next model.

Not only that, but the TI was already unsupported when they used it, so they wouldn't have been providing any software support to help optimise it. I also assume there's some throttling going on since the chip was notoriously bad with battery and some early patches have increased it. Wonder if they slowed it down.

G Watch R waiting for me after work. Guess I should probably check it's all working before rooting, enabling WiFi and the second core.... I GUESS.

Definitely test it out before you start messing around with it. My first model had a faulty battery, so I'm kind of glad I didn't mess around with it too much.

Though I highly recommend enabling that second core (and the wifi), it's soooo much more responsive afterwards and my battery life didn't change as far as I can tell.

So it turns out that Motorola delayed the update because of performance issues

Why did you buy two?

The black one went on sale after I got the silver one so I got the black one to save a few dollars. The silver one is being returned today if anything.

Some more thoughts on the Moto 360 vs LG G Watch a few more days in

- LG G Watch higher PPI is nicer to look at than the Moto 360. However, the circular display of the Moto 360 makes it seem nicer. That or the larger display on the 360
- Battery compared to the LG G Watch is still bad in comparison and this is with the LG G Watch Always On mode set to on. I'm too afraid to turn on Ambient Mode on the Moto 360 because of how bad the battery is with it off (it still manages to get through the day though)
- Performance on the Moto 360 still chugs through while the LG G Watch still flies. This might be because of 5.1.1 vs 5.0.2 but I doubt it.
- Heartrate sensor on the Moto 360 seems useless because it's so unreliable. It will work one time then not work on the other. And I realized how little I actually need that heart rate sensor too

Some more thoughts soon.

whats this rooting malarkey? Was just going to wait for the LG update to bring wifi, and I've not noticed it being particularly slow to need dual core. But if it is easy to do, its worth a go.

Follow this link, some tinkering required:

So, this happened:

Also put the device into dual core instead of single core. From what I gather it shouldn't impact battery life that much and boy is it faster!

Anyways, I am happy to have entered this WiFi future.

Damn, keep hearing that the first charge on the Watch R depletes quickly for some reason, but this is ridiculous.

Man this is completely pointless, but I do like it.

Yeah, takes roughly a week or so to settle into normal usage. It's the software I think, needs to calibrate itself to the battery.

It's great combined with nine for my exchange email, because I can customise the vibration. So for urgent work emails I have it do a heartbeat pulse which is really easy for me to notice amongst all the other more General vibrations. Going to look into using coffee for SMS which apparantly lets you do the same with even finer level control.

I think something is wrong with my Moto 360 or the latest update. It used to seem to track my health info pretty accurately, like steps and what not. Since the last update with cloud sync enabled it's tracking far fewer steps (even though I increased my cardio). I have been a bit rough with this watch though so maybe I just broke it.

Getting a couple of bugs, are others getting these, or are they down to me using the M preview?

Main one is that the Play Music controls desync and don't respond from the phone. If that happens, the card keeps coming back on the watch until I have to clear it until I reboot the phone.

This might be more Android, but with the watch and my bluetooth headphones connected, it's a lottery as to where the sound is going to come from. It's either silent, the phone or the headphones.

I told you M has problems with the Nexus 6 😉
That's why I went back to lollipop.

battery life on the GWR is definitely worse after the update. Took it off the charger yesterday around 7am, and this morning at 7am it was showing 6%. Normally it'll go nearly a full two days, not one.

I might have to start putting it into theatre mode overnight, but when I'm away from home it makes a handy nightstand clock.

Hm, was still on 60% yesterday morning after taking it off about 7am too. Have enabled the multi-core kernel and WiFi as well.

hmm. You using always on screen? I even went back to a stock watchface just in case watchmaker was impacting things. And I have my notifications disappear quickly (liking that a lot - have a quick look when I get the vibration, but if I don't it isn't cluttering the watch face up. Quick swipe up brings back the last notification)

Yeah, I had always on mode on. I had a Fallout Watchmaker face that was draining it like mad, but am trying Aiii's Persona one at the moment and it doesn't seem to be draining much at all.

Only thing I can think of is the custom kernel I'm running says one of the goals is energy saving from more efficient ARM algorithms. haven't used 5.1.1 stock for any length of time so can't compare.

EDIT: Also on the Android M preview in case that makes a difference.

can you link me the persona one?

So the general consensus is to stay away from the 360 at this point, right? It looks great and fits my wrist well, but all the "issues" it appears to have sort of turns me off from it.

I'm really struggling with my decision. I really like the G Watch R, but the current pricing is a bit much for me. The Sony Watch 3 has some great reviews, but it isn't exactly a looker.

Any thoughts?

Moto 360 2 will be announced soon with the Moto X, so may as well wait now unless you can find the G Watch R for $100 again.

Sheesh, I wish. I even saw it on sale that day, but I wasn't really interested in the watches at the time. Had a little medical incident the other day though, which kind of motivated me to look for one.

No harm in waiting for the 360 2 though I don't guess.
