Another 30 old teacher and 15yr old student but this time with a twist

It seems this goes on all the damn time now. This time though in a strange twist, the teacher is getting letters of encourage... from the victims friends.

A former Spanish teacher at a Michigan Catholic high school received 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to sex abuse charges involving a 15-year-old student.

Kathryn Ronk, 30, admitted to having sex with a sophomore at Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights, a northern Detroit suburb. She originally faced five counts of criminal sexual misconduct, but took a plea deal last month for lesser charges. Instead of life in prison, she got 15 years with parole eligibility in five-and-a-half years.

Cops said Ronk had sex with the boy in different classrooms at the school, between class and after hours, according to CBS Detroit. She also provided him with alcohol, and had sex with him in a car in Sterling Heights and at the victim’s Macomb Township home.

In an interview with police, the boy said Ronk once told him, "This is what we used to do in high school," according to the Detroit News.

Although Oakland Circuit Court Judge Nanci Grant appreciated Ronk's apology, she said that she'd taken offense at the letters of support that she had received from the defendant's friends and family.

"I have never seen letters of support for a defendant with nothing about the victim," Grant said, according to the Detroit News. "They were all about you and what you were going through. Poor you... You did something you shouldn't have done."

And of course pics before ya'll ask. OH, and she's married. Gotta feel bad for that guy too. :(

Could have gone and received attention from a great many men closer to her age, but chooses to engage in a sexual relationship with a student.

The perfect example of predator behaviour...

Because like many, they didn't see a 15 year old getting laid by his teacher as a victim.

Or more likely, they didn't see it as something so bad as to get a long term.

Exactly. I'm not sure why the OP thinks that other kids thinking this was "cool" is different. It's pretty much par for the course.

Life in prison for statutory? Even 15 years is ridiculous. The system needs reform.

The boogeyman of teen sex should cost her her job, not a quarter of her young life.

Edit: yes, the letters of support were tone deaf.

Still, 15 years is a long time in prison. I don't think even violent sex offenders are put in prison that long.

What she did wasn't right due to the teacher-student relationship, but holy shit, 15 years? Are you fucking kidding me? That is utterly, utterly ridiculous and can only be evidence of some perverse puritan streak in the US criminal justice system.

Life in prison????

While what she did was certainly wrong, life in prison? Really??? Wooooooow.

Life ends at 45 confirmed!

Would she have gotten less time if the student was 18? Or is the punishment based mostly on the teacher/student relationship?

It could well be trying to send a message to others. But what they apparently haven't noticed is that a punishment for a thing doesn't stop everyone from doing the thing.

because the predator usually doesn't get letters of encouragement from the other kids?

It's literally in the OP

I'm sure it's happened.
And, if nothing else, the sentiment is nothing new/surprising.

Just because something says something doesn't make it the case.

15 years?! WTF. It's sex, not vehicular homicide.

This is mindblowingly insane, ffs a year at most, put her on 2 year community service and some sort of list that doesn't brand her if it's the first offense.. But up to 15 years? Christ.

The deal was that instead of Life in Prison, she got 15 years with an option for parole.

Enough with this. Let the mods do their jobs.

Crazy sentence.

She is really attractive, but that has nothing to do with the crime in question. There are violent rapists and pedophiles who don't get 15.

And I think the OP misread, the letters of encouragement are coming from her friends and family (she is the defendant being described), not the victim's friends and family.

We can't really ignore the abuse of her position of authority. There might also be an element of 'sending a message' in the sentencing.

I also wonder if those letters might have played a part in the sentence? What an utterly bizarre thing for the friends and family to do.

15 years? This is a serious situation and offense, but...15 years?

If this was a man, would the sentence still feel excessive?

Statutory rape is statutory rape on the books.

I don't think she'll serve 15 years in full. I do think the sentence is too harsh, regardless of sex of the defendant.

Wut ?

You cannot comment on someone's looks now ?

The context is that it trivializes rape. Whether the victim enjoyed the encounter has no meaning legally, which is the assumption when you comment on the defendant's physical attractiveness. It's still statutory rape.

Shame some will view it as "well done lad she's hot". I still feel a lot of people view it differently depending if it is male or female who is the teacher. 15yrs is far too long tho, but she does deserve some prison time for what she did.

Well, we are the punishment capitol of the world. We love to punish as much as possible. That's the way it's always been. Yes, we need reform, but good luck getting it.

I still think it would be excessive personally regardless of gender. But truth be told, I don't know what a good sentence of time is for rape- statutory or otherwise. It's horrible all around and I'm not sure how you measure the appropriate punishment.

Life in prison is ridiculous.
You have videos of murder by cops and they get off scott free

But statutory rape with a teenager too young to legally give consent = life

Well many rapists are out of jail before some drug offenders. That tells you everything about our justice system.
