Any gaffers going to gamescom?

Press ticket has arrived, but it is digital this year and it is going to be a pain to print it in high quality.

So are there enough people coming and staying in the city ? Or is everyone just planning on making Day trips? Was wondering cause last year I pretty much had to explore the whole thing on my own alone and honestly it was kind of boring, especially after the exhibition.

Well looks like I'm gonna stay 10 days in Germany overall... 3-4 in Cologne and rest in Berlin and other Cities... Wanna visit all theme parks!

I went three years in a row and now I have to work.. damnit. I gave my VIP-ticket away to a friend of mine ( won that when I signed up for their newsletter....regret giving the ticket away now :/ ) Anyway...it's an hour drive from my house ( Venlo, Netherlands ) and the only option I've got is saturday...but I guess it'll be very crowded and I hate waiting in line.

To be fair I want to go there for the atmosphere and the fun (and the fact that I can visit friends in Munich later), more than playing things because the wait times in queue are painful, even more so when alone considering I don't speak German. I can play the games at the much less crowded Eurogamer Expo.

The closed booth set up results in the wait time being increased immensely, I absolutely hate it.

You're right about the booth set up. 2 Years ago, it was a complete mess and I was terrified tbh...thought for a moment that I got crazy. Just check this: gamescom entrance 2011

With the ps4 and Xbone present you will be lucky to get in line. 2 years ago I went there on a saturday and we had to lie to get in. The line was long they were telling people to come back tomoorow. They funny thing was, when we got in it wasn't that full.

I might go on a saturday. but have to wait how it goes.

What the fuck is that? That's like 100 times worse than what I saw last year.

When I was in that crowd, I swore I would never ever visit Gamescom again. Last year I went thursday and it was not that crowded, but in the weekends....it's very crowded. They may have changed their policy about how many people they will let in though.

Well I got Press Pass, so I will be there on 21st, when there won't be any lines to wait etc etc :D

Was anyone making a full Gamescom OT btw?

I thought about going for a day or two, but don't know if any of my friends can come with me and if it's worth it since the lines are so damn long without an industry-ticket. Not that travel is that big a problem (#DutchGAF) but eh.

I used to do some writing for a medium-sized gaming website, a shame I've not visited Gamescom in that time period. ;(

I'm going as well...

But I kinda fucked up filling in that form though...

EDIT: There, rectified it!

Really looking forward to meeting some GAF'ers!

Hotel and tickets have been booked, I'll be going with a friend to Cologne on Thursday evening and visit the show on Friday.

I went two years ago for two days and I know we won't get in line for the big games. I just want to get a taste of the atmosphere and hopefully see some good via Vita action.

completely depends on how early you're there. I went in 2011 when it was so massively crowded, yet if you're early you can still play some of the big games. Hell, I was one of the first on the Sony line back then xD

I agree if you're talking about the big budget AAA titles, but many smaller games have very short waiting times. I remember the Sony booth being very good last year, where you could play many demos without having to wait more than 10 minutes.

Yeah. Last year, I was easily able to play Playstation All-Stars near a line that was waiting for The Last of Us demo.
One of the anticipated games at the time, Rayman Legends, it took my brother and I 40 minutes to play the demo.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Injustice, 30 minutes each.

I would have loved to play Metal Gear Rising Revengence, but it was a 2 hour wait, and there was little time as it is.

On the plus side, I got a ton of streetpasses on my 3DS! And it was great to experience an E3-like atmosphere.

Whaaat, people are saying it's easier to get a press pass this year? I applied a week ago and was denied because "privately owned blogs/websites aren't allowed". The owner ofthe site I write for sent them an article I wrote, along with a link to the colofon page where it's states that I'm an editor. It's a website hosted on wordpress but not a wordpress blog.

Really strange because isn't every gaming website "privately owned" in some way? Is there another way to make it past accreditation?

You are going to love it. So good.

Sony booth was super great for wait time. Make sure you go to the non major parts of booths as well, and simply ask to play.

Looks like I'm the only one going on Sunday so far. Bah, I'll be going with some friends anyway, don't think I can meet up with any of you guys.

Still, anyone going on Sunday?

[EDIT] Also, does anyone know if Killer Instinct will be playable?

Which carrier is the best in Germany? Looking for pre paid sim cards with a bit of data usage per day. T-Mobile?

T-Mobile are the biggest carrier, but the best reception at the event will depend entirely on the towers nearby and the equipment installed. One thing's for sure: the free wi-fi on offer at the show is always terrible, if it's even available. If you want mobile internet you'll need to be an employee of one of the exhibitors and use your super expensive show internet, or use 3/4G.

Almost all of the carriers can sell you pre-paid cards and such. Toytowngermany is a great resource for finding out about stuff here: http://www.toytowngermany.com/searc...81&ie=UTF-8&sa=Search&q=Pre-paid&logic=and&l=

Most travelers appear to use simyo Paket bundles, but there are alternatives - http://translate.google.de/translate?hl=en&sl=de&tl=en&u=http://www.simyo.de/

So, what does this mean? Should I go for T-Mobile then? Unfortunately they don't seem to have an English option on their web site so it's hard to know what they have to offer.

I'll be there for three or four days and I need around 300 MB data per day.

Edit: thanks for the urls!

Tmobile or O2

O2 prepaid internet costs 3,50 € per day for 1 GB with 7,2 mbit/s. After that 1 GB is over you get restricted to 64kbit/s

Info from a toytown thread:

It's impossible to generalise on coverage in a city or a specific location as it depends on so many factors including provider, density of population, geography and architecture. It can also depend on the device you are using.

The best coverage overall is provided by T-Mobile and Vodafone. O2 come a close third and E-Plus a distant fourth

All four providers are usually well served in most cities

For data services Vodafone are currently at the fore - they are heavily investing in 3G, 3.5G and now 4G which have pepped up voice services too.

For a balance of cost compared to service O2 probably wear the crown. Until early last year they were generally ahead of T-mobile but behind Vodofone, but recently they fell back to third place. Their aggressive pricing does make them an attractive contender, however.

For any specific location or area where service quality is key to you, then you'll need to test it yourself. All the services will offer you a prepaid card for around 10€ with 10€ of credit, which gives you an opportunity to call, be called and surf with the phone of your choice and evaluate the best for that (those) location(s) and your choice of hardware.

If you want something with data you're probably going to have to pay more. Personally, I'd recommend going to a T-Mobile shop in Cologne before the show. In the city centers they almost always have staff who speak excellent English, and they can help you way better and get you up and running immediately.

I'm going on Saturday and Sunday for a double dose of pain! Can't wait, love Cologne, love the drinking, love the food. Plus I get free accommodation at my sister in laws so it's a fairl cheap trip from England. Got a GAF lurking buddy coming along with me too.

3,5 € per day is fine with me. Thanks for the help.

Seems like a wise thing to do. I'll take care of that as soon as I've checked in at the hotel. Thanks again. Hopefully they have nano sim in store though. :)

I used the exhibition hall's post code for the example.

I visited the Gamescom a few years ago, and while it was enjoyable it was also far too crowded for my taste. I think I visited it on a Friday back then, so just thinking about the crowds on Saturday makes be dizzy.

In general I also always feel like these conventions for me are always a bit pointless and depressing. There rarely is a game that I would willingly want to stand in an hour long line for to be honest and most games also don't fit well with the busy convention atmosphere anyway. Still, the general excitement of all those games minded people together is somewhat amazing, even though it always reminds me of how unlucky I am for never having any friends that are interested in games.

Of course, if you go to cover stuff for work (which I've never had a chance for, but would like very much), the experience will probably be entirely different as well.

In any case, for all of you that are going: have a great time!

(Also, for any other Dutch people in this thread: stuur me aub een pm als je voor een website of tijdschrift werkt waar ze schrijvers kunnen gebruiken met een academische achtergrond en passie voor oude en nieuwe spellen; of zomaar om een praatje te maken :-)

Edit: I keep seeing people talk about Leipzig, but as far as I understand it, the (Leipzig) Games Convention has closed down, as can be read here: http://www.gamesconvention.com/
