Any gaffers going to gamescom?

I much preferred the Games Convention in Leipzig to the Games Com in Köln.
Probably not attending this year, since I have to work on press day and there's no way I'm going with the unwashed masses (I'd rather wait 5mins per game than 45).

But eh, let's see. It's always fun to meet up.

Anybody up for a carpool from Berlin?

Berliner here... not sure if I could make it though :(

I'll be there. Unfortunately only between tuesday and friday. Can't stay for the weekend >_>

has anyone received their "for the industry"-cards yet? i mean for the people who go on wednesday

I did, took about four days from the request. This year they sent a "print it yourself dummy" card via email instead of actually mailing it like they did last year.

I might be going, seeing if there are some friends wanna come a long. For some reason I never feel like going to these things alone :(

If I'm going I'll probably go the 23rd. Last couple of years I went in the weekend and it's way to freakin crowded. And from people that went on the friday I heard that's it's still crowded but nearly not as crowded as in the weekends.

How crowded is the press day then? Obviously a lot less than the public days, but I reckon there will still be lots of people?

I know there are seperate invitation only events that day (behind the screens footage/presentations) but I'm talking about the general boots where you can play games.

media day: 8k-10k
public days 40k-50k

so it's a lot better. you stil have to wait sometimes, but maybe 10-30min, not 5h ...

Some lines still can take up to 30 min wait depending on the screening or how the que is setup

I just read that if you have a voucher for Wednesday you don't have to be press/industry member. How can I get one of those?

That is new this year, but you still need to pick up your "real" baggies at the press counter and they will check id/passports.

Yeah, if I win the Sony competition I will :)

Sorry man Sony just called me to hand me your winning tickets.

Always wanted to go since Keulen KEULEN KEULEN is not far from here (another Dutchie reporting in) but seeing those Leipzig crowds made me weary somehow ;)

I would be going for the Vita games mostly.

Went to a couple conventions in The Netherlands back in the day, I remember playing the RE4 demo for an hour because they tucked in ONE station with it between all the Metroid Prime 2 stations. That was bliss man. Only TWO people came up and were excited for it, everyone else who went by was dismissive about it and thought it looked clunky.

OH IF THEY KNEW.

They should rename the city to Keulen anyway. (Though american podcasters trying to pronounce Köln correctly is always entertaining.)

The Biergarten is perfect for meet ups. The Ubisoft party (if there is one this year) should also be a perfect opportunity for us to stay awkwardly together, mumbling "video games?" every few minutes.

I don`t want to wait around 4 hours for Battlefield 4 or any others AAA games.

300 minutes = 5 hours

Train tickets at the office. Hotel has been booked. Gamescom trade visitor badges should soon arrive. 3 days of business meetings, lots of german food and cocktails.

My report from last year:

The last few weeks have been extremely hectic for us. Not only did we visit Gamescom, Got Game conference AND Unite we’ve also eaten a lot of schnitzels!

Here are the picture to prove that we were at Gamescom:

Meat! Bei Oma Kleinman is Cologne’s most well known schnitzel paradise. You can order two dozen different kind of schnitzels, all of them amazing.

This is me licking my schnitzel.

These are the guys from Gray Lake games. I convinced them that they would be on a super special list if they eat everything. They succeeded, only the list was a lie

Here I am waiting for more schnitzels.

Darth Vader was at Gamescom. Selma was really impressed.

IMG_0270-1024x764.jpg

Selma was even more impressed by the architecture of Cologne.

Boogaloo is a cocktail bar just 100 meters from Bei Oma Kleinman. It looks like a crack house but the cocktails are awesome.

I was not impressed by Hitman

I was not impressed by the Borderlands 2 bus

Selma was doing a fake presentation while no-one was watching the stage.

We had a meeting with Microsoft in a hotel just next to Gamescom. I thought we could try this shortcut. Next time we’ll take the long route.

So I hope this little post gives a good overview of what we did at Gamescom.

Wargaming party looks funny too :P

Let's be clear on this: I wouldn't even bother coming to Köln without a press badge and appointments behind closed doors. It's pointless if you want to see and play games.

I took the liberty of setting up a Doodle for those who wish to find an overlap in their respective schedules while at Gamescom.

added myself but you should also add Monday and Tuesday for press peeps.

That looks like a fun group hopefully we can do a meet up ! :D

Will be there on the 21st (not press) and think I will check out the floor in the morning. I'm there primarily for GDC.

Dutch here and meetup sounds like fun. The topic about the meetup last year was kinda quiet sadly.

I agree if you're talking about the big budget AAA titles, but many smaller games have very short waiting times. I remember the Sony booth being very good last year, where you could play many demos without having to wait more than 10 minutes.

Yeah, you're right about that. I remember them having the same AC3 demo as Ubisoft. Waiting Time at Ubisoft: 5h. Waiting time at Sony: A lot less.

The also used a ticket system for PlayStation Vita games I think and their stand is always comfortable.

Dutch,
Dutch everywhere.
:)

I went a couple of years ago. I dont know really what is the attraction to gaming conventions. The lines were all so long to play games and the "swag" they are giving away is not really that great.

Saw a bit of decent cosplay but besides that I dont think I would go back. Actually meeting Gafers would be one of the best reasons. Ill check back in when closer. I live about 2 hours drive away.

Just come in for a night out if your 2 hours away :)

gamescom should take place in Hamburg, my home town. Right guys, right? (Not making many Dutch friends right now.)

No worries we drove 6.5 hours to Leipzig every year for a few years so no problem with me as long as its not longer than 8 hour drive its fine with me.
But I do have to say that Koln is a very fun city to go to! :D

Well thats better than the 8 hours AC3 line last year. And that was the first public day IIRC.

Im not from the press but i won a wildcard for the press/media day, so way shorter lines and less crowded place would be a blessing.

Casual connect was in Hamburg. Gamescom is not.

Didn't know that, thanks for the info. Hamburg is arguably Germany's biggest video game city, but it's pretty much social games focused. I don't even think we have a big enough venue for gamescom up here.
