You do know that you can get an AR in .308 right? Look up DPMS or RockRiver arms. You can build a .308 AR that weighs less than 10 lbs. The M1A is nice, but it's more suited to long distance prone shooting when you get above 12 lbs, unless you're a lumberjack.

Is it weird that I want a FN SCAR-H?

I have a frankenstein Kalishnikov, but I understand almost all AK's sold in the US are.

Typically not a Fan of Glocks. They are top heavy and feel awkward in my hands.

My personal gun of choice (which i've seen a few times in this thread) is my Beretta 92FS.

The new 92FS Type-A1 is pretty much just a 92FS with two extra rounds and an accessory rail.

It's tempting -- just because I've always wanted an illuminator or dazzler on my 92.

Try out a CZ-75B in that case. You'll be blown away by the ergos and fit.

So I have been watching a bunch of youtube vids on the various 9mm pistols. Seems like the Springfield XD-9 is a good gun and possibly slightly better than a Glock 19 (according to some reviews). Anyone have an opinion on this gun?

Hari - I have the 9mm XD and love it. Similar to the Glock in most repsects (accuracy, relaibility), but the ergonomics for me are so much better. Points very naturally. When I hold a Glock out with my natural grip it's pretty much pointing at the ground.

One of my shooting buddies has an XDM-9 as his primary sidearm. I will clarify in the beginning that I'm not a fan at all of striker DAO handguns (see: glock clones) due to the trigger. That being said, the XD has a pretty decent trigger. Still not quite as nice as a hammer gun, but loads better than the M&P and Glock. The dealbreaker for me is the grip safety. I don't like that I have to be holding the gun nearly perfectly for it to fire. Additionally, it has a high bore axis leading to more perceived recoil and more difficult follow up shots. This is especially true since it's fairly top heavy with a chunky slide.

But, it is a killer deal for the XD-M set. You get something like 4 mags, a holster, a mag holder, and essential cleaning utilities. One of the highest value sets out there.

I don't think the grip safety is necessary, but I've never failed to engage it. I've shot the gun in USPSA competitions in which I'm trying to draw and shoot as fast as possible but still never had a problem.

More perceived recoil compared to what? Maybe the slide is on the chunky side and it's top heavy but that's true of most similar guns such as Glocks, M&P, H&K. Any polymer frame gun is by definition going to be "top heavy". The polymer frame soaks up at least some recoil. My primary gun is a .45, so to me there really isn't all that much recoil to begin with shooting a 9mm. Follow up shots are very easy with this gun to me.

Of course, YMMV.

.45 to 9mm is apples to oranges. Out of the firearms I've shot, I'd say it has more than any alloy framed 9mm, and more than some comparable polymers like the CZ P-07, FNX-9, CZ-SP-01, and Beretta Px4. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "the thing is uncontrollable!", I'm saying in comparison to other 9mms, it has a bit more perceived recoil.

When I went looking I had of course been recommended the Glock, my friend had just bought an XDm, and I'm left handed so I wanted to try the M&P since it was ambidextrous.

The glock was ok, but I hated the looks. The XDm was nice but the height over bore was messing with me and I always felt strain on my wrists - it just didn't line up nicely with my natural grip. The M&P (for whatever reason) felt awesome in my hands and is likely the reason I shot best with it. The ambidextrous controls were icing for me.

My recommendation would be to try to find a range where you can try all of your potentials out (in a relatively short period of time) to see what works best for you.

I also watched a ton of Youtube videos and ended up liking the analysis on this dude's channel: http://www.youtube.com/nutnfancy Be forewarned - he talks a lot :)

<3 Nutnfancy. That guy is almost always right on with his analysis. A big group of friends in my area actually shaped our shooting courses and ethic after their drills. Lucky to have the property and locale that we do to be able to do so.

Totally agree - I really enjoy the amount of thought he puts into literally everything he posts about. He gets a lot of hate, but I have to imagine a lot of that is just jealousy - I know I'm jealous of his setup :)

I see your nutnfancy, and raise you a Hickock45. He is like Nutn, in that he does a ton of reviews, mainly for pistols. He also shoots each gun he reviews in the video and raises all kinds of good points when going over the firearm. If you have some time and want some good info, his videos are a must.

http://www.youtube.com/user/hickok45

Here is a video that he does facing the Glock 23 against the Springfield XD service model.

http://www.youtube.com/user/hickok45#p/search/8/iGV9XxxO6-8

I personally own Springfield XD's. A XD 9mm sub-compact and an XD .45 tactical model with OD green frame. I really like both of my pistols, a lot. I also like Glocks a lot and have nothing bad to say about them at all. I have shot a G19, G26 and G27 and they are all really, quality firearms.

My personal preferences in choosing the XD over the Glock were not many. Mainly, I shoot an XD better than a Glock, XD feels better in my hand, I actually am a fan of the grip safety, more metal parts than a glock (guide rod for one) and I prefer the field strip of the XD to the Glock. Also helped that at the time of my purchase, the XD's had a promotion where you got 2 extra magazines (about $50) with your purchase.

With polymer guns, I feel there are so many great choices out there, it is hard to go wrong, Springfield XD/XDM, Glock, Smith & Wesson M&P, etc... it is all down to what feels right and shoots well for you.

Haha - already subscribed man! Hickok is great - does some seriously ridiculous shots out to that gong. My favorite has to be a shotgun slug, to the gong, with no sights. WTF!

It was on sale for $465.00 at Big5 ( a local sporting goods store) I had seen it a few times for $599 but that was a bit steep. Saw the ad for $465 and got the last brand new one in stock. The wait is horrible... I can pick it up on the 19th.

Also, Cali limits you to 10 round magazines, because they hate freedom :P

Yeah, apparently this model is not fond of Remington bullets. From the research I have done almost all the other brands fire without problems except for Remington.

Yup, I noticed this all the time and its definitely a big pet peeve of mine. A lot of games are doing this lately as well. Grr.

Yeah I was gonna say, I thought CA can only get 10 round mags legally(unless they have a clause like NY does where you can get preban mags).

Truth. I've fired a fair number of handguns, and my CZ-75 is still my favorite - everything 'just fits', particularly after I put some some Hogue wraparounds on it.

Yeah I normally just call em mags. I have a friend who also hates the mag/clip thing.

I am well aware of the current offerings of the .308 Ar rifles, however I am interested in trying a new platform. That being said, any experiences with the Rock River Arms? I really love how it is ambidextrous (I shot left due to awful stigmatism)

I like Knight's BUIS better than Magpuls. I own both, maybe it's a psychological thing with having metal ones.

it's all preference. The Magpul stuff does look sexy though.

It does. I have an AFG, CTR stock, MIAD grip and Magpul uh...mag pulls. But, I dunno. Just like the Knights better.

Knights makes good stuff too though. I don't own an AR, so unfortunately I can't utilize all of Magpul's stuff. I do have an AK though. Midwest Industries handguard on it. Very sturdy.

My buddy has the AFG and I know it's supposed to feel more natural, but honestly I can't get used to it. I feel like I can never get a good grip on the rifle.

It really only feels "right" when you have the rifle cinched up in your shoulder tightly.

With all the Magpul stuff I own, people think I should have Chris Costa picture on my wall or something. I buy from them because they are a Colorado based company.

North Carolina. I actually got the Sheriff to sign off on it in my county, most people go the Trust route but I got lucky I suppose. If I ever get 12,000 dollars laying around, ill make it a full select fire weapon lol.

Most definitely some Magpul on it, the flip sights and AFG, the AFG is the most comfortable weapon holding position, EVER. Highly recommended. Guess ill list the other stuff as well.

Stock: Vltor Imod
Upper: BCM 11.5 w/10" Daniel Defense rail.
Lower: Armalite and trigger assem
Bolt: BCM

hahaha have you ever see the videos they put out? Costa cracks me up. I'd like to know the details of his combat experience.

well it's a nice rifle. Definitely would like to own something like it one day. But, I live in New York so that will never happen. We have to go crazy and spend 3x the amount to get pre-bans :(

Anyone pickup a 1911 being the "100 year anniversary"? I've always wanted one and I'm stuck between the S&W 1911PD commander or the Colt 1911 full size.

I think I like the internals of the Colt better, fewer MIMed parts.

I picked up one a year or two ago now. It's a Springfield Armory, you can check those out too. Mine has had no problems so far.

I really want another one, this time in a 3" offering...but not sure what to get when it comes to it. There's just soooo many choices and I want them all.

I've picked up seven of the over the last few years. I currently own three. I've always loved .45s, and 1911s are my favorite frame. Here's the last one I picked up, (link to post/photo below) a S&W custom, though it won't look like that for long. I've just gotten some custom grips designed, and I'm about to get them carved:

Ive carried a sig 229 for about a decade. I cannot recall the last time I went anywhere (barring a government building) while I was not armed. If it was the 1500's I would be a swordsman its the 2000's so I am proficient with the weapons of the era. Every single human being with the means should likewise carry and obtain the training.

Who wants to be helpless without the aid of others?

Thing is beauty, I think I already replied to it but, damn so good.

I have a Taurus PT1911 in SS.

bought an 870 a week ago after some one tried to break into my house in the middle of the night. my friend tells me to load buckshot, then a slug, then buckshot, etc. into it. Is that really the best thing to do?
