Any gun owners lurking...

bought an 870 a week ago after some one tried to break into my house in the middle of the night. my friend tells me to load buckshot, then a slug, then buckshot, etc. into it. Is that really the best thing to do?

Sounds bunk to me. Slugs need to be aimed. Ideally, you want the first shell to take care of the job. If for whatever reason it doesn't, the last thing I'd want to be doing is aiming. 00 Bucks is all you need.

So I have been watching a bunch of youtube vids on the various 9mm pistols. Seems like the Springfield XD-9 is a good gun and possibly slightly better than a Glock 19 (according to some reviews). Anyone have an opinion on this gun?
I have the .45. Feel of the grip and grip safety make XD's a superior choice, IMO.

I've heard people speak that nonsense about staggered loads before but it's usually a silly attempt to give an intruder a warning shot with something like birdshot. I find that approach to be highly foolish and his prescription for enacting that approach is even dumber as buckshot will kill a man easily.

If you are put in a situation where you need to shoot, you shoot to kill.

Besides selling some fun novelty stuff like dragons breath, they sell what is in my Benelli m4.
Rhodesian Jungle, buck and bird. It doesn't penetrate through that many walls if you live in an apartment complex or close to neighbors and its hit radius is massive when up close. If that doesn't work for you try the bolo.

I would think so. If someone is breaking into your place at night, it's probably going to be dark, you are going to be in a panic, therefore you have a better chance of hitting your target with buckshot. Might want to get a flashlight mounted on the 870 also.

Love it. You have any 3" suggestions?

I'm staying away from Kimbers now, since they can't seem to figure out their extractors.

Para-Ordinance makes some nice ones.

But if I were going to buy a 3", my choice would be the Colt New Agent Series 90, hands-down.

I don't own any compacts myself since I don't CCL, but I love shooting every 1911 I can get my hands on. My gun club/indoor range has a large stock of just about everything to play around with, and that's where I first fell in love with the New Agent. My best range buddy, a long-time Glock guy who just recently caught my 1911 bug and does carry, bought one late last summer, and we've shot tons of rounds through it. Same thing with the range model--it is very, very reliable, and bottom-line, that is what you want from a compact carry weapon.

The first thing that might throw you with the New Agent is no traditional, or adjustable sights. Instead, you look down the "sight trench" carved into the top of the slide. This works great for what the gun is meant to do, which is defense, because there is zero chance of a snag coming out of the holster. It's quick to hand, quick to draw, and quick to sight all the way. It's not for someone though who wants to fool themselves into thinking they are driving tacks with their 3". If that was your goal, you wouldn't buy a 3" anyway, so the Colt New Agent is just honestly doing it's job. Still, with practice, you'll be shooting nice groups that make you smile anyway. The weapon is plenty accurate for a 3".

The rest of the pistol is pure Colt awesome. Great fit and finish, beautifully finished old-school style Colt grips that just look great on the gun, and a few nice "custom" features too. The .45s are 7-1, with a double-action-only model available, and there's also a really nice 9mm version (8-1).

Well this gun has turned into more than I had ever intended to do. The acog that I purchased just flat out wouldn't work due to the height at which it sat on a GDI mount. So I ended up purchasing a nightforce scope, it was on sale for 1799.99. I also purchased a Larue stock mount to put a grip that serves as a monopod and a grip (it flips up so it isn't always down).

So I am going elk hunting in Idaho in October. We've been firing a .22 bolt action just to get back into it and today we decided to bring out the big guns. I'm just going to be using a .30-06 (I'm not a hunter) but the guys I am going with are using Remington 700's. We brought those bad boys out along with some 7mm magnum cartridges. Good god, quite the kick. Absolute bad ass and it sounded like we were firing off artillery. Brilliant.

I live in Idaho, you do not want a .30-06 for Elk Hunting. If you are hunting on a preserve, they aren't bad, but if you are going up in the mountains to hunt you really want something a little bit different. I use a browning 7mm. I would really like to get a Thompson Center Fire, but my wife thinks I have enough guns. I told her that when Red Dawn occurs, we will be set. lol.

As far as hand guns, I have an HK and The Judge for Hiking up in the mountains.

It's a preserve. Our outside shot will be 200 yards. I'm taking whatever they give me since 1. I don't hunt and 2. I'm not paying shit for the trip.

I'll be with a guide so really, all I have to do is point and shoot. Trust me, I'd rather have something with more kick but beggars can't be choosers and I'm not buying a new gun for one trip. It might turn into an annual big game hunt, at which point I will invest in something.

Yeah, for that you are fine. We have 20 acres on a Mtn. Lake in N. Idaho, we have a few thousand acres of National Forest land on 2 sides of us and the lake on the other so elk hunting is nice for us. Do not always get one every year, but thats just the nature of the beast. Good luck and have fun, I am assuming you guys are hunting in Southern Idaho.

Broadmouth Canyon. No idea where that is.

Yeah, that is North of Pocatello in Southern Idaho. You will have fun and a laid back hunt, enjoy. I have only been on one guided hunt in my life up in Alaska, it was a lot of fun, but when you have your own land to hunt the wife doesn't let you spend money on hunting on preserves. : (

I shot an Glock 18C over the weekend.

Holy balls.

Def a two handed, muscle the barrel down affair.

I will never own one, and quite frankly, its a scary pistol.

Used to be my service weapon when I had my year in the Norwegian army. Good times at the shooting range :D
Mine too, I probably could still dismantle and put it together quite fast. Solid as hell construction, considering the winter conditions in Norway it's good it was.

glock26.jpg

http://www.glock.com/english/glock26.htm

It's perfect for what I want, a small weapon easily concealed for those late nights coming out of the casino. It shouldn't be more than $800 after the gun, bullets, holster, concealed permit, and registration.

Anyone one own one and have any thoughts they would like to share?

I own a Glock 23 4th Gen, it is a dream to shoot, and feels really nice in your hands, would recommend glock above all other pistols, no doubt in my mind.

Just a quick update, got a EOTech a little bit ago. Anyways, my MK18 with my USP compact. lol Wow, horrible gun safety is present in this picture, safety off, loaded mag..... fail. But no worries, I do not keep it like this and the MK18 is not +1. lol.

I think I'm going to buy my coworker's P99 off of him.

And why do I have so much Magpul crap?

Figured this was the better topic to post in for this question. Does anyone here use black powder guns, being a history nerd they seem pretty awesome, granted it's not for self defense. Would be hilarious to imagine some dude hearing a break in and trying to load a musket.

Finally going to get to fire some guns this Sunday.

Starting off with a .22 pistol and .22 rifle, some 9mm and 45 pistols, a shotgun with different, shells, and finally a magnum.

Guy I'm going with wants to get me used to lower calibre weapons first to acclimate myself and get me used to firing a weapon.

I'm also taking an NRA Basic Pistol Class to get a few weeks later.

Man I love PA we have tons of ranges and stores. I'm still not planning to get one till until next year as I want a lot more familiarity, training and a chance to just see what I like. Lots of great people in my area in the PA Firearms Owners Association willing to help a newb out and saves me a ton on rentals, just some really nice people.

Bit random, but does anyone know how that FPS Russia guy get all the stuff he does.

I swear I've seen him with ballistic knives which are actually Fed banned, but all fondly remembered from Commando.

Nice, I own a .38 police issue, a custom kimber 1911 and a 357 S&W.

Checking in to once again reafirm my love for my:

Springfield XD45 ACP
S&W .357 Magnum
FN Herstal Five seveN

that is all.

I really want a Beretta, but I'd rather get a suppressor for my .45 and a threaded barrel first.

What are the reasons for you to own a gun? I'm not trying to start a gun debate, I'm just curious since I come from a culture which does not encourage gun ownership.

My dad died earlier this year and he left behind a bunch of guns. I've thought about selling them, but I think he wanted me to keep them. Now I probably look like a lunatic in a tiny apartment with a bunch of guns and ammo boxes just laying around with no place to put them. I guess I'm good to go for the zombie apocalypse, but I can't shoot for shit.

Man that is a thing of beauty. Man the 1911 is truly a remarkable gun in being so simple and so appealing to look at. The best thing is the damn thing still works as good as it did in 1911. There is a reason guys special order them and the Marines are bringing them back (modded of course) instead of the M9.

I have the XDM varieties in 9mm and .45. They're great-great guns for the money. Only issue I have is I'm lefty, and wish they were more ambidextrously designed.

As far as the shotgun talk before, home defense, I'd almost always suggest birdshot. Low overpen, and it certainly does sufficient damage at close range like in a home. Even if you don't fatally wound the person by chance, they're going to exit your home with the quickness.

When you read about load-swapping, Slug->Buck->Slug, that's usually something I'd do for the patrol car due to being in not so small as a home situation, and it's more versatile overall. But I still think birdshot is king for home defense.

Thanks, it's a very expensive thing of beauty too. Seriously, I could have got a nice AR for the same price.

You pay for quality though, and Kimber is quality.

Quality is never a bad thing.

Bought a bunch of ammo for tomorrow. I'm so looking forward towards tomorrow. If anyone wants I can post ammo pics. lol

Ammo is expensive right now.

What are you shooting?

At one place tomorrow a .22 and a 9mm.

The other a .22, 9mm, 45, bunch of different shotgun types, and a magnum.

Can't specify the types of guns yet, but I'll report back tomorrow afterwords. I am so exicted.

Luckily I only needed to get ammo for the first thing.

Very nice. HK make very good guns.

I'm going to wait until after it's cold to decide, but the thought of selling my Glock 34 has been crossing my mind. I bought it for target shooting, and I did go a few times and put something along the lines of 600 rounds through it and I've started to become very proficient with it. But, it warmed up, I do other things and don't really make time for target shooting. So, if I find myself occupying my time all through the cold season I think it will have to go bye bye :-/ (I cannot justify keeping something like that that I never use).

Bought this in August and finally had a chance to try it out this week.

I've loved HKs since I first saw Die Hard. A large part was the awesome sound design on the movie.

I just found out the it and most of the MP5s in 1980s movies were converted HK94s. Mind Explodes!!!

I was originally going to buy a PX4. But living in NJ, this is probably going to the only gun I buy in a long time and I decided to go ahead and spend the money.

I held a bunch of the guns at the shop and none of the other guns felt as comfortable as the P30.

Can't wait to do more later this afternoon.
So how was it Manos? What was your favorite gun and caliber? I have always been a big fan of my XD45 Tactical and my Mini 14. Just picked up a load of ammo on my road trip out in Utah and can't wait to go destroy some paper later this week.

Been a while since I posted in here.. haven't been shooting in a while.. but I got a new gun a few months ago..

I picked up a Walther PPK/S used from a local dealer.. I paid a little under $500 for it.. judging from the markings and the serial #, it looks like it was made by InterArms in the mid 1980s.. making it almost as old as I am.. but to look at it, the finish looks perfect.. like a brand new gun.

DEWalther.jpg

The above picture is the PPK/S muzzle to muzzle with my Desert Eagle .44 magnum (still my favorite gun)

Buying a Glock 26 this week to use as my primary duty weapon, can't wait.

The Sig 229 isn't a bad gun or anything but it's really not easily concealable in my opinion.
