I would keep it loaded but in a safe with a good release mechanism. It will cost, but having an unloaded gun for hd is asking for trouble.I own a single-barrel two-shell shotgun. I have never kept ammo in the house at all, since I've only used it for skeet shooting.
We've moved into a slightly rougher neighborhood, and we're not on the second floor anymore (1st floor in a duplex). As such, I'm finally starting to consider the gun as an option for home defense.
We have no kids -- just a roommate and a dog. The dog is a 125-pound Great Pyrnees who would probably end up being our first line of defense, if his incessant and unending barking does not scare away any would-be intruders.
So what do the people here do? Do you keep your gun and ammo separate? Do you keep your gun loaded at all times with the a lock on it? Loaded with merely the safety engaged?
There are locks on every bedroom door, and it's unlikely that someone might come in through my bedroom window given that we have those shitty windows that open slowly outwards with a shitty hand crank. The windows themselves are a 4x4 grid of small panes with a metal frame connecting them all. So even if someone broke one of the panes they couldn't fit through, so they'd have to manually reach in and crank the window open.
I presume it would be safest not to keep the gun loaded, but I can't shake the feeling I'd feel safer to keep at least one shell in the gun with at least the safety on. Obviously I can feed in a shell but, would not cock it to chamber the round.
Finally got around to purchasing a Springfield XDS for concealed carry. Someone recommend me a good shotgun for home defense.
As Dead Man said, Mossburg 500's are really good, and semi-auto shotguns start at around $600 I've found (at least around where I live). But keep in mind shotguns are super loud, and if you fire that thing in an enclosed space you will have permanent hearing damage. Finally got around to purchasing a Springfield XDS for concealed carry. I love the smell of cosmoline in the morning. Er afternoon.
Now my next step is finding 9mm ammo
EDIT: resizing the photo
Even 9mm is getting hard to find? Haven't bought ammo in a while

Can't really blame them with all the negative press towards guns.I think my neighbors are terrified of me now. I got a shipment of P-Mags in that a bunch of guys and I went in on. And I tripped and spilled the box all over the hallway.
50 freaking magazines.
My neighbor helped me pick them up and asked what they were. Then, the fear look on their face.

Mosin-Nagants? Nice. Good rifle. Very reliable.

Good, now they will stop stealing your paper
Im still trying to find a good priced AK, had a big gun show here last week, $1200 . They were 600 pre shooting, I wonder if/when they will go back to normal. Or if they will just stay that price since they are selling them
Also as a newbie gun owner, which kind of ammo is going to be the cheapest for shooting, FMJ? Need .40 ammo
Walmart, if one near you sells ammo.
I think Winchester is cheap there.
Walmart is 100% sold out of pistol ammo. Was looking on that ammunitiontogo website. They are all out of FMJ now too...is hollow point fine?
Hollow point is fine it's just more expensive an FMJ. In some cases twice as much for half as much.
If you have an academy, I'd check there. They do have a box/day limitation down here though.Walmart is 100% sold out of pistol ammo. Was looking on that ammunitiontogo website. They are all out of FMJ now too...is hollow point fine?

Serious ammo shortage right now. I'm surprised there isn't more press about it.
We had an article in our local paper, the entire town was dry on Assault rifles, and almost bone dry on ammo. The local range is not selling ammo unless youre going to stay and shoot because they are so low.

Ook thats what I was curious about. So Ill just wait for FMJ's to be in stock again
also, do they make any attachments for S&W M&P's?
Just weapon lights and suppressors. You have to live in a state where suppressors are legal and buy a $200 stamp from the gov. And have a threaded barrel.
I was looking for a light but couldnt find one? Could you point me in the right direction
I live in the one state that has 0 conceal carry, no way we can have suppressors lol
Edit; found it! Micro90

I don't get why ammo has dried up. It's not like there's any bans for ammo in the works. Stupid hoarders.
You will need to give the counterparty the address of a local FFL who is going to receive the firearm and transfer it to you. It's obviously important that you've already contacted the FFL to figure out what their requirements/fees happen to be for a transfer. You really need to have that ironed out before you close on any deal because that's really your problem, not the seller's.Anyone had any experience with gunbroker? Thought about ordering an AK from there since its like 300 less than my local store. Not sure how it works though?

With the seller, you should also confirm, before you close out, four things
1) How much shipping is going to cost if it's not already included
2) How will they actually ship it
3) From what FFL will they ship it (so you can tell your FFL to be on the lookout)
4) What procedure you need to go through if you need to return the firearm for any reason
When the firearm shows up, you go to the FFL, pay them the transfer fee, and fill out the NICS check. Once the NICS is complete and you're shown to be free and clear, they'll give you the firearm.
Gunbroker is like ebay. They are just an intermediary for cash. They do not ship any product and they have very few avenues for remedy. I honestly suggest you pay with American Express or a VISA/Master Card affiliated with a large bank (like BoA or Chase) so that if you get ripped off that you have someone who is willing to go to bat for you and contact any appropriate authorities.
Well I feel like a douchebag. I had a buddy from Colorado order me 10 magpulls for 17 a pop. I've got a buyer here in Florida willing to dish out 50 bucks each. My buddies at the range gave me some shit about the ethics "cutting in line". It's hard to pass up a opportunity to make easy money during the panic. It's not like in selling my pmags from deployment.
Yep. Two 91/30's and an M44. I want a PU Sniper but not enough to spend $600 on one.
Fuck them. If some goofball wants to pay you 50 bucks for that shit, so be it. They're just sore they didn't think of it first.

I found an ak in town. Guy has 2. One eaa black. And one norinco. Friend told me norincos are really good. It's got a wood body which is awesome. Might look into different stocks and stuff sometime, because black is sexy
Now I have to find ammo. And I want to find metal mags
Also. If you want to cringe. Instagram search "gun" see how horrible everyone's trigger discipline is. Really drives me crazy
has anyone ever used armslist.com? It seems pretty awesome, almost like a craigslist for guns.
Saw a good deal on an HK Mark 23 that i wanted to pick up. (probably no need to own a second one, but they are awesome)
Actually, I'm seeing the prices of ammo, extended clips, and Bushmaster ARs starting to come down. It's still a lot higher than it used to be though. Just bought 2500 rds of 7.62 x 25 Tokarev for my PPSh that I'm going to shoot this weekend. Cost me almost $800. And the Papasha will burn through 2500 rds in under 3 minutes on full auto.
