Any gun owners lurking...

I want to buy a gun. I've always kind of wanted one, but never really had the spare cash I wanted to use on a gun and never had a great reason.

Now I recently bought a house. It turns out a crackhead hoarder owned the house before it was foreclosed on and she went to jail. Apparently the basement had a lot of characters moving in and out freely and I have had some visits from some of these people including the old owner after she got out of jail. Since then I have seen the old owner and her boyfriend around the house a few times and I think they may be casing the place.

Anyhow, this is a good excuse to finally get a gun.

I don't really know anything about guns. Do you have any recommendations for a rookie? I was thinking shotgun since this is primarily for home defense and I always heard those are better that purpose, but not sure if it is true.

Shotgun is a good bet. Take some safety and shooting courses. Look up laws on deadly force. Consider a dog. If you have children or child visitor get a safe or trigger locks. If you do buy a gun take it to the range often.

Whatever you get make sure you (and your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/fiance) also knows how to shoot it/load ammo/put the safety on or off.

Take a home safety course and please ACTUALLY TAKE IT OUT AND SHOOT IT! Can't stress that enough. People buy a weapon put it in a corner never having tested it or if they have it was years ago. Crunch time comes and it may not work.

One major thing is what are you looking to spend? My father always said when looking for a weapon to protect yourself ask this question "What is your life worth".

I was figuring it would end up costing between $500 to $1000 for something decent. Does that sound right? Where do you find home safety courses? At the gun range?

What city are you located? Most gun ranges/clubs have some sort of courses or can direct you to someone. Same thing with most gun stores. That price range is perfectly fine.

Anyone recommending a shotgun for home defense has not fired a shotgun indoors. Find a pistol you're comfortable with and buy some frangible rounds. If you've got the means and patience (and if your state allows it), get a suppressor.

In the case of an actual home invasion, you will at some point need to speak to emergency responders and your family. You can't do either while deaf.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The sound is part if the oh shit factor, which should help with urging whomever from your property. Additionally you have a higher hit percentage.

Remington 870 for 3-400 dollars and you are good. Use the remainder for ammo and training class or lane time.

Could you further elaborate why it is a bad idea for a shotgun? The sound?

I don't think a shotgun is a bad idea for home defense, but I prefer my pistol. My pistol has a light attached, can be used one handed and has more rounds in the magazine than my shotgun does. A shotgun blast is deafening and while I haven't shot my pistols or shotguns without hearing protection, I imagine if I did, I would be deaf a bit longer after the shotgun blast compared to my 9mm or my .45.

Bonus points to pistols in states that allow suppressors. Also, the last thing I am worried about in a home defense situation, is racking the slide to scare someone away. I am not about to rack a slide and give away my position without identifying the threat first. My home defense guns are always locked and loaded anyways.

I could go either way as I have both. The shotgun slide rack is enough to scare the bejesus out of most people. With a pistol you have to be more accurate but it's easier to wield and could be fired from either hand.

The sound of a pistol indoors is not hugely different from that of a shotgun...

Not true.

The idea that running the action will scare someone off is not something I'd bet my life or family on. With a pistol, you have hand (or two) free to call 911, grab your child or wife, and generally get the fuck out quickly. Discharging a weapon inside your home should be the absolute last thing on your mind.

You may think you're a great shot, but in the middle of the night, in the dark, full of adrenaline, you're not hitting what you want to hit.

Which tbh is the exact argument I would use for a shotgun. No matter how cofortable I would be with my 45, I wouldn't one hand that thing.

Obviously just a difference of opinion. To be frank, I pick the 45 caliber because of stopping power in a home defense situation. But my first reach is for a shotgun.

Not to but in. But the penetration of a 45 is a big concern as well. Dove load in my twelve gauge won't have much energy if any through two layers of Sheetrock.

Initial messing around with it impressions are that it is amazing. Trigger is a dream... grip is sublime, really melts in my hand. Going to go break it in at the range today! :)

Very nice! I'm envious that you can find any 9mm to run through it. It's been bone dry for months now around here. :/

Also picked up a new plinker - a Ruger 10/22, and immediately put it in the most hilarious aftermarket stock ever:

Picked up my first AK... A CIA WASR 10/63

I realize these do not have the best reputation but I did quite a bit of research before buying and I believe I got a pretty good example. It's a post-2008 model, which is when Century Arms underwent some management changes and started building much better rifles. The sight and gas block look good, there isn't much mag wobble (and almost none with the extra Tapco mag it came with, there's a military stamp on the receiver, all the rivets and fittings look good, and it came with a Tapco trigger and gas piston. But I guess I won't know for sure until the ammo I ordered gets here. :p If there's a problem, Century will fix it since it has a good warranty but as long as it shoots every time I pull the trigger then I'm happy. Didn't need anything fancy.

Might try out a bump fire stock later. Anyone have any experience with the Bumpski or Slide Fire stocks? I like the look of the Bumpski stock but the price is ridiculous.

Also the bayonet/dagger that it came with is pretty cool but also hilariously dull lol. It looks like it's seen a lot of use, which is a little scary.

FINALLY got to shoot my AK today! Soooo much fun though the sights need to be adjusted a bit. Need a glove though... That thing gets really hot. We shot about 150 rounds with 0 misfeeds. Now I'll be saving up for a bump fire stock and 75 round drum.

Finished my Daniels Defense DDM4v5LW build; slapped an ACOG 4x32 on it with some magpul gear. The local outdoor range is Cecil Webb here in south Florida, amazing places for camping/fishing/shooting.

Cool I'm in SoFlo. Does that field allow auto fire? Been looking to put a bump stock on a AR to shoot for fun and was wondering where I could actually be allowed to fire it since most ranges I've been down to here don't let you auto fire.

Last time I was there they allowed "rapid fire" a few days per month.

The have certain full auto days, I think they have the days posted on the FWC site.

My buddy came in from out of state and forgot one of his pistols in my closet. It blows my mind that a gun registered in his name still has to go through an FFL and pay the fee on both ends.

Yea in going to have a hell of a time transferring my guns from FL to WA. They don't allow NFA items so I can't bring a suppressor or SBR with me, because politics.

Got a SKS a couple weeks ago, and now I'm finally done attaching junk to it, lol. It came with the stock, but I've added the scope (Redfield 2-7x33), shell deflector, bipod, and sling. Came out looking pretty badass!

Anyone shot a 10mm? It seems like the best one on the market (Not many to choose from)

Did you get that Glock yet? I dunno about you, but in my area 10mm is hard to get.

Currently I shoot 40S&W which is basically 10mm short, lol. I'm glad I shoot 40S&W as people around here are still hoarding up the 9mm.

On another note, I learned when my local Walmart stocks the ammo shelf. I'm going to try my luck and see if I can get a big o'l box of 22LR. It's crazy 22 is so hard to get right now.

I still can't find .22LR in my local WalMart/Academy/etc. I've got all the 9mm I need for a while, but I still want to plink around with my P-22.

Yes I did end up getting the 10mm. Great great gun. I'm more a Springfield XDM guy but I gotta say I love this Glock.

10mm isn't that hard to find cheap online. I generally get .223 for under .30 cents a round after shipping and 50 HP 10mm rounds for about $21 shipped a box.

So where can a person get some good affordable optics. I'm really not keen on paying more for some simple red dots or such than the cost of the gun.

So what should I get next? aka my Christmas present to myself :)

I'm thinking of a few things
Springfield M1A National Match or Loaded
Scar 17s (Dat price tag)
Sig Sauer 716

M1A. There's nothing special about the Sig 716 and the Scar 17 isn't worth the money. If you want to pay top dollar for a M14-type rifle, get one made by LRB. Otherwise, get the Loaded and buy a better stock.

I was leaning FAR towards the M1A National Match and that will probably end up what I get.

Wife's carry:
Sig Sauer P238 Equinox.

Home defense M4:

Nice. I have an Aimpoint Pro with Larue mounts on my Colt LE6940MP.

So after a few months with my Glock 20 Gen 4 I not in love with it like my other weapons. I don't like the sights. I'm leaning heavily towards selling it and getting this

What are good sight replacements for Glocks? I need to research that before I truly decide.

Do you have the stock sights for the G20?
