Any gun owners lurking...

Any thoughts on the kits you build yourself? I've looked at those before. I just want a black powder gun to have one in my collection. Not sure I'll find enough use to justify spending a grand to get an accurate replica

I've never put one together, but I think they're fairly simple and fun to work on from what I've heard. Most of the kits I've seen are caplocks rather than flintlocks, and they're generally smaller calibers. One of the reasons why I went with the flintlock was I loved the thought of firing a huge 450 grain ball at stuff.

I would also look at a caplock revolver such as a Colt 1851 Navy replica. They're usually pretty cheap (~$300 or less for a full kit) and really fun to use.

Last weekend I became an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor. While I'm doing it to honestly improve the general marksmanship of the common people I also was hoping to just offset my ammo costs. What I never realized is the discounts you now get from a ton of online stores. Dat 30% off Daniel Defense...

After getting my lower SBR'd, I was left with a spare 16" AR upper. Like AR parts tend to do, an entirely new rifle materialized by mitosis.

Do not let this happen to you.

I think I'm about to pull the trigger on a second build. I love my budget AR as-is, but kinda want a varmint-style build to go with it.

Finished the IPSC course. Yes!

Just to top it of, the EU's attempt to ban semi-automatic weapons isn't apparently going anywhere either. Or at least is facing some tough resistance and is very unlikely to pass. Fuck yes!

Awesome, Awesome! Love me some IPSC, or USPSA as we call it over here.

What can is that on the scar? I just ordered my first can last month. Rugged suppressors obsidian 45. Thinking about grabbing a 308 can before this new law crap.

SCAR has a Saker 762, AR has a Saker 556. They are the most durable supressor on the market. As for the SCAR stock I'm debating buying the ACR stock adapter

Weaved up a paracord sling for my AR today. Took about 3.5 hours including making the jig.

It's 1 single uncut 100 foot strand. Cobra weave the you double back and do a cobra weave over the other weave to get it wide. You can use about 90 feet of the cord and still have a usable sling.

Oh hey GunGaf, been a while!

Really been improving my pistol skills, took a day long GORUCK Firearms - Pistol class and that was immensely helpful. It focused on active shooter intervention and taught me a ton of stuff, and gave me lots of drills to work on even if they're limited by being stuck with an indoor range. :/

And Friday I picked up my first AR, a Smith and Wesson M&P Sport II, local shop had it for $590 that day only so I had to jump on it. Picked up some extra Magpul hardware to bring it up to snuff and it shoots like a dream. Even with iron sights I was grouping nicely in the kill zone at 20 yards after a few magazines!

I really need to join a good outdoor range around here....

Cool, M&P Sport II is a solid rifle. And $590 is a good price to, I think most shops near me sell it for $650

Awesome! I figured it was a good price since even online the cheapest I've seen was $540, and that would require FFL fees on top so it would come out the same.

Although now I have like $100 of magpul parts to put on the damn thing, haha. Picked up a punch set and a ball peen hammer so I can get rid of the front sling attachement point and put on a MOE Handguard, and attach an angled foregrip to that. Already replaced the grip with a nicer one, and I'm going to install a MAD lever.

Other than that shit, I want to get a QD Sling attachment and a red-dot eventually, and that should be the extent of my mods.

Grabbed a Glock 34 MOS today... I hate Glocks but figured I'd give them a try again. Maybe I'll keep this one. It actually feels good in my hand.

Picked up a SIG p320 compact the other day. Waiting for some small grips to come in the mail today then im off for its maiden range trip!

Psyched on my first pistol purchase.

I guess I'm lucky that all Glocks feel pretty great in my hand, especially the 4th gens!

Hello...looking to purchase my first gun soon, mainly for stationary target shooting at 100 - 500 yds.

I've looking at the Remington 700 and Winchester Model 70 but am really not sure what to be looking for in terms of differences. My local gun shop recommended a Ruger Precision for best in class out-of-the-box performance.

I really liked the bolt mechanism for the Remington, but beyond that, I'm not sure what I should be looking for...any thoughts? Not specifically looking for a semi-auto as I like actuating the bolt as part of the shooting process.

I bought one on Wednesday for $650. My first modern rifle. I haven't fired it yet, but I've spent some time with a retired Army/Air Force guy at work who made me a sling for it and has been showing me all the ins and outs of it. I'm really happy with it so far.

That new gun smell!!!!

If you like the bolt mechanism of the Remington and it felt good in your hands, go for it. All three of them are quality time honored manufacturers so you're not going to go wrong with any of them.

Welcome to the club! :-D It's amazing to shoot, you'll have a blast.

Agreed. I think the bigger decision is the specific caliber you want to get the rifle in. I own a Model 70 (pre 64 woot woot!) in 30.06 and the 700 in .270. The .270 is much easier for long range IMO because of the flatter trajectory of the cartridge

I agree with everyone else that all 3 are great, but the Remington has better after market support/accessories than the other 2. Personally I'm thinking of picking up one myself and throwing it in a Magpul stock with the detachable magazines.

Shooting beyond 100 yards is going to be challenging for a new shooter but a Rem 700 with a 24" barrel would be a good place to start. I would suggest getting one in 308 Winchester and a Nikon Monarch 4-16x scope. What is your budget?

Bushmaster AR-15, Came with a free red dot scope.

Changed out the grip, mussel break, and trigger guard.
Nice! Was the muzzle brake pinned/welded? Their website says they are but I've read conflicting stuff online. I want to change mine but that has made hesitant since I'd have to go to a gunsmith

Thanks everyone for their feedback - I'll likely be going with a Remington 700, particularly with the aftermarket support it has. Currently looking at the 700 Varmint SF - the stainless for purely aesthetic reasons.

Looking at up to $1500 or so.

That feeling when you look at your AR and the buffer tube is rotated slightly off center from when you tightened the castle nut without using vices..... :/

Switched out the back plate for one that incorporates a QD sling connector.

I would suggest this one.

I have this one, It is really nice. You can find lots of research out on youtube about it.

I plan to get this qd mount for it next.

Goddamn, it's gotta be good if it costs only $150 less than my rifle!

It is actually cheaper than the Aimpoint Pro, and I think a lot of people like it better. My co-worker who has multiples of eotechs, aimpoints and Trijicon mro's suggested I go with the mro for red dot. It was a good suggestion. It is all personal preference in the end, but it is a good value product.

Also, don't worry about the cost of your rifle. It is probably not going to be your last rifle. :)

It was not that bad. Put the new one on with a new crush washer and called it a day. Oh and having a strong vise to keep the upper secure is a must!

Nice! A Red Dot is the last thing I need to add on my AR and make me happy. :-D
Thanks. I may switch it out soon with a reflex. I like it and it works great but want to try a few diffent set ups before I make my final decision.

FYI, new gun laws signed in CA :(

I can't find a link that summarizes all, but bullet button ARs will be classified as assault weapons I believe.

Background checks for ammo? Wow. I don't know the details, so what about those who reload? If they're exempt that's a hell of an incentive to start. What a PITA. It's not very often, but this is one of those times I'm REALLY glad to live in Texas.

I actually like that idea.

Have to do it for everything else, why not the ammo too?

Funny it went into effect with zero actual way to do the checks yet. They estimate 6-12 months before you'll be able to buy ammo.

Mainly because I don't believe it will have any effect other than to inconvenience. If it comes out to actually have some sort of impact then I'm more than happy to eat those words because I am not against all new regulations like some. The database for ammunition owners also seems like a bit much. If I didn't make my own ammunition then I'd be purchasing thousands of rounds a month. At what point do I become suspicious? What exactly will you do with that data if that's not the use of the database? It seems like something that is done just to say they've done it but it seems like there is very little use until after something happens.

In short, if these people are passing gun background checks like the vast majority of those who shoot up places then they'll pass the ammo background check. I see a lot of cost, little to no gain.

Because it's highly redundant. There are ways to keep convicted felons (such as some sort of blacklist) from buyin ammo without making it an enormous pain for people who do nothing wrong.

Unfortunately I live 15 minutes from the California border. I would imagine a lot of people will be crossing over to buy up all the ammo.
