Next year I'll finally be able to start on getting a bachelors in History. I'm looking forward to it. I love History and it's perhaps the only subject that really interest me. Hopefully I'll be able to complete all my classes in two years.

So anyone starting, at, or finishing up a B.A. or Masters in History?
Any tips?

Classics, so probably not what you're after.

Don't bluff. Few disciplines punish and expose it as severely or embarrassingly.

History? What are you planning on doing with the degree?

Teacher or if possible some sort of *Dreams* museum curators or archivist. Those field are super crowded in LA but you never know when an opportunity strikes.
I plan on trying to apply to some internships in LA.

Cool, well good luck my liberal arts brother. I went with English but I love reading up on History; I wouldn't mind it if I ended up teaching in that field someday.

I think Hive is a history major (graduating this year,) but I don't think he's going to do any work in the field.

I kinda expected a "History majors can't find jobs" response, but It's not impossible to find a job with a History major. You can say the same thing for a lot of other majors.
In a LA theirs is always a need for a large influx of History teachers. Schools are currently openly left and right.

I'm an English grad student. Will be getting my MA next semester. I'm about as useless as you are--maybe a little less so internationally.

Also, I was a history minor.

IIRC Blackace has a degree with some sort of history as his focus. Maybe Asian studies or Japanese history or something.

Majors like History, Political Science, Sociology, etc. are not studied (in undergrad anyway) in order to get a related job. The most important thing one learns from these majors is how to contrast, compare, analyze, and criticize and to do this all in writing. These skills are universally applicable to any job, not that any job can be done with just these skills. However, management level jobs rely very highly upon these sorts of skills.

I will be a History minor........ fortunately i will also have an Accounting major so i can get a job (until computers render even more of my profession obsolete :D )

History major here. As long as you like History you shouldn't have any problems. Get used to writing papers. Then go to law school with the rest of the history majors like me and go from useless to being hated.

I'm a history major. I'm gonna go to law school if I can, and if I can't I will become a teacher.

Either way, I'm feeling optimistic about my future. People who hate on history majors suck.

American history:

- Some guy found the country.
- We had some slaves.
- A bunch of stuff happened.
- Obama became President.

Hi, I'm a History major with just two terms left until graduation~ Here are the good and bad of being a History major:

+ It can be dry, but extremely awesome professors and peers go along with the major
+ very lax compared to other majors
+ doesn't require a relatively high amount of credits to graduate
+ professors are open to retroactively adjusting grades that are on the fringe
+ general history major students are not history snobs like art history majors. hehe
- cute history major girls are almost non-existent.. T_T;;
- limited career opportunities in comparison to many other majors

Just PM me with any questions! I'll be happy to help out~

Career-wise, I'm not doing anything related to my major. I plan on being an English language instructor overseas for at least a few more years, then working in daycare or in the mission field~

I was a History major with an Art minor (talk about a useless combination :lol ). I was going to go on to law school since that's what seemed to make sense. Took the LSAT (and did well) and everything.

Fast forward three years and I have a Masters degree in special effects animation and working freelance. Funny how things end up working out.

So, basically, unless you know EXACTLY what you want to do down the road and know EXACTLY what major to take for that, don't sweat whether it's useful or not. If you like history and find it to be an interesting subject, take it. That's why I did.

If you just keep following things that interest you, somewhere along the way you'll find somethng that works (or at least sets you on a path to something that works). Trying to shoehorn yourself into some position to fit what you think a job needs even if it's not something you enjoy is just flat out counterintuitive and would lead to a career you don't enjoy.

I think you might be my brother. He is currently the same major and minor as you, except he's going to graduate in the Spring. He's interested in graphic design and such, although right now he's actually interning at Discovery Channel.

I am considering being a History major, as I've got about 4 weeks to decide before the University administration starts breathing down my neck (being undecided sucks). It's between History, English, Journalism, or Government. All useless liberal arts degrees, I know (except for maybe Journalism). I love writing, especially editorial. Just want to pick a major I can enjoy while letting my writing skills continue to develop. Getting a degree is the most important thing right now, even if it is in "just History".

i was a history major (focus on peoples movements)/ geography minor. i wouldn't change a thing about it - and the way studing history will teach you how to research and think will be helpful in whatever field you'll enter. i'm in the non-proft sector and it seems to be pretty helpful in my day to day life.

Just noting since you said Teaching. History like English teachers are a dime a dozen. There will be much competition, and more for quality schools. So it can be difficult to get that desirable job position.

I'm a Social Science Major with a Coaching minor right now. I decided against a History major because I plan to teach at a smaller school, so having a broader subject matter is better because I might have to teach many different classes...
