Fantastic idea for a thread OP. I’m always interested in some lesser known games that can evoke the feeling of yesteryear.

I think it's tough to find Indie games that are similar to full-blown studio projects. Even PS1/N64 era. That is the era of games I most nostalgic for and I usually just end up replaying games from that generation or looking for similar kinds of games from that era.

With a list that long, there's bound to be.

No.

Low res textures and nearest neighbour filtering do not a 32 bit game make.
It kinda does tho, not a perfect replica but it clearly play on nostalgy factor.

But Suikoden is pixel art.......???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I know that Suikoden 1 and 2 is pixel art, so what? I DONT want pixel art. Suikoden 3-5 has no pixel art either.

That's a lot of games you listed. I'll just post some of the RE/SH type games I know of.

Thank you I will check them out now.

Massive 100 hour RPGs are not really a project for indie teams. But are Divinity Original Sin and Pathfinder Kingmaker considered indie by some people? I don't even know any more.

Unfortunately a lot of those don't have "indie"/small developers equivalents, and even if those projects look kinda dated or simple now, it would still take a big budget and a large team to even replicate the quality of some of these.

Suikoden 3 for instance, it might look like an ugly and simple game for developers to make today, but the amount of cutscenes, combat logic, storywriting, environments and all those 100+ characters would take a long time for an indie team to make something like that.

That's unfortunate.
It's just that I read so often online that Indie games are the salvation for people who want to play games like from the good times. But it does not seem to be the case.
At least I found some platformer and horror games now I will try them out soon.

No RPG from N64-PS2 era was 100 hours long.
Usually you could finish them around 30-50 hours.

I enjoyed Blue Fire. Hat in Time was a little rough on Switch. Might be better on PS or PC.

Bumpity bump:

Fantastic user reviews on Steam;

Come on peeps, anyone got any more suggestions? Indie and AA are where it’s at nowadays if you’re looking for something fresh and fun.

What is this game like? Mario Sunshine and Banjo-Kazooie?
Yeah it’s a 3D platformer with collectibles similar to those games. It’s published by the developer who made A Hat in Time and there’s similar player movement to that game.

Hm doesn't look like any game I listed in the top. Is it a ego shooter or what?
Fair comment, movement sort of reminded me of Titanfall. It’s a parkour shooter basically.

Well I tried Blue Fire a few hours but it is not a traditional Zelda at all. It is a Platformer.
The first 30 minutes alone have more platforming then all Zelda games together.

Also this game must have one of the most boring menu screens ever:

Sucks because I paid 20€, don't know if I can even sell it to anyone.

I wouldn't know how to describe Rime, but it's good. You're sort of just trying to explore and find your way around while solving puzzles.

Sidescrolling platformer but amazing

Mystery puzzle game that is designed around a ground hog day/time travel mechanic
