anyone else HAVE to beat a game 100%?

so i was playing beyond good and evil and i noticed i missed a couple "items" and i couldnt back to them which meant i couldnt get 100%. this was at or beyond the halfway point of the game and ive decided to start over. its only a couple minor things but just knowing i would be 3 freaking pictures away from getting 100% bugs the shit out of me so i had to start over.

another example would be in a game like kotor...i HAD to do every single side mission on top of getting every item. its a fucking disease im telling you.

this is probably why i dont finish many games.

I try to get 100% as much as i can but i am not as crazy as i used to be, i don’t think getting 99% on a RPG would bother me as much is a did a few years ago, I did not finish or did I want to finish KOTOR 100% for example. I have however finished both GTA 3 and Vice City 100% as i could finish them in my own time as I did not have to do specific things or collects specific items at specific time in the game. If I play and "sandbox" or free-roaming game I like to finish it 100%. I am still tiring to get 100% in San An for example.

If a game ends up on my backlog shelf, I push myself to finish it. And of course, I'm the one who decides when a game is finished, when I can remove it from the shelf. I rarely want to finish games 100 % though, but I'm planning to do that with Pikmin 2 for example. I even have Soul Calibur II on my backlog shelf, because I plan to finish the Quest mode before moving it aside.

Actually, I finished KOTOR just a few mins ago and I did faaar from all the missions in the game. In the beginning, I spent some time on them...but after a few hours I just grew tired and wanted to make progress through the main quest instead. And even though the dark side is somewhat tempting me for another round (I played a good guy this time), I couldn't be bothered to play through it again.

You're not alone, I too am a stubborn completionist. I will restart, replay and whatnot to achieve 100% scores.

Just wait till you get to shooters and decide 1CC is the only way to truly beat them :)

It is a disease. My backlog of games can attest to this. OH and the restarting... It's never ending. People look at me funny... I'M HUMAN DAMNIT!

Nah, not unless getting 100% gives you something really cool. Just no time, I'm not 13 anymore.

EDIT - I realized what happened after I didn't get all the stars in Mario Sunshine. I've gotten all 120 in Mario 64 several times. Damn retarded blue coins.

Didn't get everything in Wind Waker either, but I don't know of anyone who was able to take a picture of everyone.

Before having a kid? Sure. Now? Man, I'm lucky if I get to finish a game. :lol

Quote of the day, I didn't fight Bowser until I had 120 stars. 100% was a must. MGS3, I might, GTA:SA, no way in hell, there is just too much

It is a disease. One I can't find a cure for yet. RPG's are the worst for me. I can't just do the story side of the game I always have to do all the side missions. FFX was the first RPG where I couldn't convince myself to 100% complete it.
But I put over 150 hours into GTA3 (I got the purple nines glitch when I was 99% complete.)
I've already put in over 30 hours in GTA:SA and I'm barely out of the first city.

I don't think I'm gonna bother with getting 100% anymore though, I just don't have the time. I will just feel guilty everytime I start a new game. :D

That's always fascinated me because I have never felt compelled to continue playing a game once I finished the story mode proper. I think the only time I came anywhere even remotely close to 100%ing a game was when I was determined to get everyone in FF3 up to level 99.

When I was younger (80's), finishing a game 100% was alot easier. Due to 1) lower requirements 2) more time to play games. There is just too much silly stuff in these games now ... Wind Waker and Dark Cloud 2 really took the cake with useless stuff you had to do. At some point, common sense kicks in and I say "enough".

I think the last game I did 100% on was Pokemon on the Gameboy.

I stopped after realizing that whatever piddling bonus you earn for scoring 100% just doesn't make up for all the time and mental stress caused.

I'm a casual gamer. :(

The side missions in KOTOR are lots of fun, though, so I dont mind those.

If a game has multiple endings....I might be tempted to finish it 100%.

But if it just has 1 simple ending, then I will rush through, ignoring any extra tidbit I can.

i'm happy if i can get the games out of the selophane....

... and that's getting harder day by day ;)

Games are too freaking long these days to do this unless you have a ridiculous amount of free time.

I am probably alone in this, but I really wish most companies would make their games shorter and refine them to the point where there are no slow points in the game instead of just bloating their game where it takes 20 hours to finish it and 80 hours to get 100%.

I say that same stuff, btu then I get a game like Full Spectrum Warrior, finish it and totally pissed off because the game is over already. I really was enjoying the game until it ended. Really not too much of a challenge. But I did finish it.

Anything more then 6 hours is fine for me. Anything past 15 had better fucking awesome to warrant that kind of time commitment. I just have too many other things I want to do to spend 40+ hours in front of the tv playing videogames.

I usually do, and it's not because I'm pursuing whatever meager reward you get for reaching 100%. I just have a completist personality - I like the satisfaction that comes from knowing I've done everything in a game. It's cool feeling like you've done every last thing that could be done - that there's nothing left to do that you haven't already did.

And, yeah, I don't finish too many games ;). I generally spend 50-70 on each game just getting every last thing ... 180 hours on FF X-2 ...

it is indeed a fuckin disease. Especially getting all conversations in fire emblem. That was one of the worst things I've ever done to myself. HOURS of:

(I forget the EXACt pattern but)

A
A
up
up
A

wait 10 seconds, repeat.

I really used to enjoying getting the most out of my games during the N64 days by completing them 100% or replaying them, but I had a lot more time back then and the N64 days provided lots of software droubts that gave me the time to do that!

There's not many games these days that are compelling enough to complete 100% anyway. Games like Super Mario 64 and Majora's Mask are games that deserve to be finished 100%.

How bad is the disease?
I'm currently trying to beat all of the tournaments with each character in both doubles and singles mode in Mario Power Tennis. It's sick.

I have this disease. I'm like Greenpanda in a way, what I'm after is not the 100% number or reward, it's just doing everything. If I enjoy the way a game plays, I don't get tired of it. Getting 100% tells me it's okay to stop. Since I like a lot of games, I'm basically screwed. :/

Oh, and getting 100% in San Andreas gives you a boost to your stats, makes your vehicles more resistant to damage, and spawns a couple very useful vehicles near your house.

I did finish Sonic Adventure 100%, i beat Jak and Daxter 100%...i do have a daughter and it does makes things hard...

DCX

Yeah, I have to say that the vast majority of the time I have to get 100%. I attribute this overwhelming feeling to the fact that I must know in my heart that I'm getting my moneys worth. 50 dollars for a new game is a lot, and so I want to make sure I milk the experience for every penny.

I like to call it the The Curse of the Completist Gamer.

I used to have this problem. It got to the point where if I missed something in a game that I couldn't get at a later date, I would actually stop playing the game as some silent form of protest to the gaming gods. Then I noticed an increasing backlog of games that I hadn't finished and just said "fuck it".

That being said, I've only recently started going back to finish games... it's kind of enjoyable in a weird way because you're not blowing money on any new games. I actually lost all my data on my GameCube memory card (due to my own importing-ass stupidity), which was the perfect way for me to start over.

It's a hard process for completists, but if you force yourself to continue playing and miss enough items, you won't care as much, allowing you to continue. It's when you play through a game and get 99% that it really gets under your skin.

Well, I do the first play through as any normal gameplay through since the first time is just to create a mental map of the game layout. It's usually the second or third time when the completist mode is turned on.

If its a game I like I would obviously want to hit 100%, but it's not always possible due to time limitations - job, friends, girlfriend, etc.

Really good Myimoto (spl - I be 2 lazy to look up) games on the other hand, those are an exception. I feel compelled to 'complete' Mario and Zelda games.

I have that, but a game needs to be good enough though. Also, in shooter games on the PC, I used to play without getting hit. So if I got hit I felt compelled to reload. Also I used the weakest weapons always, resulting in me having way too much ammo for the large guns and none for the smaller.

I'm sure there is some weird psychological explanation. :)

I feel like i've cheated myself out of money and the experience if i don't finish a game 100%... or at least try to. Damn you shinobi for PS2.
