anyone else unemployed?

I got another job working at Macy's while I do my internship for the chamber of commerce. They put me on a Flex position at macys, which practically entails that I do not get any hours. Thinking about leaving the Macy's job and searching for something else.

Whenever I think about how i hate my job, i look in here and get scared shitless and realize i am very lucky. Good luck to everyone!

Also, for the unemployed folk in here, how are you surviving? You living off savings? In the US many states unemployment pay is nothing. Do you live in a country with good pay? Do you stay with parents and they pay for a home?

Im actually curious cause if i lost my job i would actually be afraid of becoming homeless.

I had quite a bit of savings left from my last job. I have my own house to maintain and pay for, but I'm living with my parents right now for moral support. When my savings runs out, my Dad will be supporting me.

This other job I applied for just got back to me... the one that had the 3 hour long interview via text chat. I figured that was a lost cause as I started getting bored by the end of it. They wanna offer me $18.75 an hour (less than I asked for) to work as a contractor for the first 90 days and their incentive on more pay is employee of the month bonuses. I'd rather not rely on something so fickle.

I have a phone interview on Thursday with the datacenter I applied at. Even if they low ball me, I know they'll be paying me quite a bit more than what the other place offered (the first one is work from home with the option to move to their office with relocation assistance later on in Colorado), while this one is work in an actual office and I'd have to relocate regardless.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to turn both down. The first one wants me to work both help desk and live chat support, while the second is helpdesk and phone support. I've sworn to myself that I'll never work live chat again, so that pretty much eliminates job #1. Job #2 I'm still up in the air about.

If nothing else, I'll just use them as some incentive to get a larger pay raise at my next review as someone in this thread mentioned before.

It's good to know that the option for other employment opportunities is there if I need them, but I have the luxury of being picky right now and I think I'd rather hold onto my current position than start at the bottom of the food chain all over again.

So, I'll be meeting with a former co-worker in a week. We're catching up after not seeing each other for a month (since she quit), and she wants to talk to me about her job. She's sort of hinting at me to interview for a position there if I'm interested. Not necessarily sure what she does, so that's obviously part of the discussion.

Now, she wants us to catch up, but also talk business and work. What's the proper attire? I'm afraid she might have a client come by or something and I'd feel like an ass wearing my video game shirt or something, and ruin that for her. My current idea is to wear a collared shirt with jeans and sneakers, so casual fridays-type attire.

The second thing I'm worried about is my resume. It's dogshit. Not in appearance, but just my experience. Two part-time jobs, and some volunteer work from 5-6 years ago. What the hell does that do for me? I feel like my resume is incredibly inferior vs. other people.

Scratch that, my resume looks like dog shit overall. Need to redo it now.

Just graduated, will finish up my contract with the school as a tour guide next week. It's a very exciting time since I can dedicate my free time to freelance and getting my company set up.

Fairly confident I just smoked the round one group apple interview. I hear by tomorrow evening.

Have a second interview that sprang on me yesterday, for tomorrow afternoon, more in line with my target industry, but damn if it wouldn't be nice to land both Apple and this tv gig; they both sound like they'd only have part-time hours at first.

Wish me luck!

I'm the Director of Recruitment for a company in the Philly Burbs. We are looking for RN's with 5 years of experience (great pay) or Service Reps who are recent grads or have about 5-7 experience (good pay).

PM if you are interested. We hire 20 people a month, so we always have openings.

Yay, just got a call from a place I applied for 1 or 2 weeks ago, asking me to come in for an interview on tuesday. Very excited, first interview ever. It's a "shitty" job (McDonalds) but I really need both the money and the experience.

I hope you find a way to enjoy your job. I know some places have rules and regulations that absolutely kill all joy, but I have recently realized that people who can find joy and pride in crappy jobs are really awesome.

I was interviewed yesterday for a job that I wasn't really qualified for but applied anyways. I was a little surprised they even contacted me to for an interview but I did my homework and spent days researching and studying for the job.

First thing that happened at the interview, they looked at my resume and immediately said HR probably made a mistake and that I didn't have the background nor experience to even be considered.

Feels bad.

Not all McDonald's are created equally. I worked at one when I was 16, and it had just reopened after a few years of completely rebuilding the place, so the owner wanted to make a great impression and was extremely strict. All of the managers were mean to the employees, which kept most of us in bad moods when we were there and we tended to snap at each other. It was a really awful experience and I actually enjoyed boot camp more.

However, I've known people who have worked at other McDonald's that are considerably more laid-back and are somewhat fun to work at. Actually, my brother worked at the same McDonald's that I did, but several years later, and by that point things had calmed down and he didn't mind working there at all.

Speaking of Mcdonalds, I have an interview with Martin Brower who is a distributor for McDonalds tomorrow. It's for warehouse, which I've decided is what I like to do and what I have experience in. It's seasonal and could lead to full time. The hours would be 2nd or 3rd shift.

The fourth wath with me yesterday. One hire, and one callback. Yessss. Finally.

edit-

Well, I'm glad for the hire. The Apple callback resulted in a second interview which I thought went decently, but I just got the e-mail cutting me from the process. Alas. Will need something else to complement the other full-time gig since that'll be NOT ENUFF CASH. [/merchant]

I have an interview with Gamestop on Tuesday for a summer job. It is the only call back I have gotten so far so I hope it goes well! Anyone here work at Gamestop at all? What was the interview like? It is probably similar to any retail interview but I might as well ask.

Ughh... I was just applying to a great job in Guam. I was near the end of the application and had uploaded a resume, entered all the required information into the searchable fields, and was tailoring my cover letter to the company when I noticed something. I read and reread the job description several times and somehow missed that a TS/SCI security clearance is required. And I only have a Secret.

I had high hopes too. I know some people in Guam and was going to try to get a hold of someone who is over there working for this company and try my hand at networking and cold-calling. The job description sounds like my job description of the last 6 years and Guam would be awesome. I had an assignment to Guam once upon a time and was notified it got cancelled only a couple weeks before leaving the country.

Oh well...the search continues.

I'll be taking an exam for a market survey/research position at Gameloft Philippines later today. Wish me luck GAF!
That's pretty cool, good luck!
If I exhaust my unemployment and haven't gotten work, my backup plan is to use my GI Bill in the Philippines and go to school and live there for free. But I certainly wouldn't have a job in the game industry.
I mean, it is Gameloft, but people have to start somewhere. And they have hit a couple home runs on iOS when they weren't ripping off other games.

Where would you be working or located?

I'm going to quit my job soon hopefully I can ey another one lined up. I cant stand it here, it's such a problem when it comes time for my break not to mention how when I ask some membership consultants or managers to help a customer they get attitude then turn around and act phony with the customer.

I'm gonna fix up my resume this weekend and start searching again. Only been here since like the the second to last week in march.

Just had my interview with this totally cute chick, almost distracting! :P

Went ok. Have a cold which makes me sound like a twat.. great timing. Anyway, will know next week.

They say you're supposed to spend 8 hours a day searching for work if you're looking for a full time job.

I just can't do that. The tedium of filling out applications and sending resumes wears on me. I can see if you're driving to interviews and going to interviews, but just sitting there at the computer applying for 8 hours a day is insane. The most I can pull is 45min-1 hour a day.

You can't adequately apply for 1 job in 45 minutes. The idiom "searching for a full-time job is a full-time job" doesn't necessarily mean pressing the 'submit' button 400 times in a row but you have to put the time and effort into each application.

Well, spent the day lazy and in bed most of the day. Tsk tsk. I wish they would've gotten back to me either yesterday or today. I hate waiting all week to hear back.

I didn't mention it, but I lined up a good-paying-but-part-time gig doing some online work. It's just enough to hold the wolves (my wife) at bay, but it has really sapped my strength for any full-out-assault of applying for jobs.

I got through two interviews with a giant firm in Kansas, and thought I had it in the bag after the 2nd one, but didn't get it. It was one of those interviews that went so well that afterward, I said, "if they don't hire me it's because they got someone better and cheaper." I'm assuming they did.

Applying for Communications, Public Relations, Web Strategy, Social Media Specialist, Content Strategy, and Editing positions here in Kansas City if you guys see anything. I have a solid resume and significant experience while working on deadlines, and am about halfway done with an MBA at UMKC (3.6 GPA). If you see something (online or local), let's talk!

Sorry to hear about that firm. Acing two interviews like that and then not getting the job would irk me a bit.

Lots of KC-GAF on GAF though, so I am sure you will hear something soon.
Just keep your head up. I know how wives can be during this time. Mine fucking threatened to leave me and take my daughter a couple weeks back! It's stressful for everyone. But you've got money coming in and you are looking, so that's awesome.
Does she work?

Does she work?

That's the problem. We just had our second baby in January, and she was planning to quit her job when she found part-time work so she could stay at home with our kids (sidenote -- our first was extremely sick the entire last year because of daycare/asthma stuff, so our goal is to keep him out for a while).

So, needless to say, when I was laid off a month before her maternity leave was over, that kinda put the kibosh on our plans. Now they're reversed -- I'm at home with the kids, working part-time, she's at work full-time, resenting me and her job every minute of it.

Tricky situation you got there then.

My wife begged to get a job as soon as she got to the states. She kept telling me "I wanna work, I wanna work!" I had to explain that there was no way we could pay for a second vehicle for her and a babysitter for the two-year-old, even with the money she would be pulling in.
Fast forward a year and a half to when I get out of the military and she starts working: "You need to get a job. I don't wanna work. It's (office work, sitting in a chair all day) too hard and stressful" This was after her first day of work.

I feel like I am really starting at the bottom - gonna start soon as a dishwasher. My gawd. The pay is unusual however - $12 an hour, 20 hours.

Had two good interviews for a full time IT position at a medium sized company. They said they would let me know one way or another by the end of the week.

Only two weeks to go on emergency unemployment. :(

If I can't get a job in the next month or so, some huge life changes are going to happen...and not for the better.

$12 an hour to wash dishes? That's fucking crazy. You must not be from America.

Im in America. Chicago to be exact.
Im not too familiar with the dishwashing thing, but the latino side of me thinks its a low point, but I'm guessing dishwashing jobs are paid very little?
I was offered the job and I start soon, probably the weekend or Monday.
Its also a tiny restaurant.

Sorry to hear that.
Hope something comes through for you quick.

I haven't even been on unemployment for a full month and I am already worried about what will happen if I hit the 20 week mark. With emergency benefit programs ending and my state's extended benefits ending last month (unemployment below 9%? I want to call bullshit), I don't know what I will do.
The plan was to use my GI Bill as a last resort, but I plan to use that for an overseas school and I won't be able to if I can't afford to move my family overseas.

Got a call today just when I was gonna watch the latest GoT episode. I definitely had my hopes down and didn't really feel good about it. But.. I got the job. Aaahh, feels so good!!

A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

So I was supposed to hear back about a job by this past Friday, even if I didn't get it. I am planning on calling on Wednesday to follow up. Is this a good idea?

I have a job interview at 11:00am UK time! Just thought i'd throw that out there. Fingers crossed for me, GAF.

It's just a retail job. I don't even know how many hours, seeing as i got a callback to a CV i sent out at random. Honestly couldn't give a shit anyway - been out of work 18 months, i'll take what i can get.

Congrats! What's the gig?
Well it's only McDonalds but it's full time and decent pay. Of course I really need the experience as well, 22yo and never held a real job. $15+/h.

What the fucking fuck? Which McDonald's pays $15/hr to a person with no work experience?

I work a professional job at an advertising agency and only make $2/hr more than you.

Sweden. Higher cost of living. Although it's still not minimum wage, you have to be like 16yo to get payed the minimum.
