anyone else unemployed?

Got a job, now I'm making easy money. It's consumer electronics, so I'll have to take some initiative to learn about the products, but for what they're paying me and the level of labor involved this is great. Plus I work with one of my best friends (who was my referral), so that makes it even better.

Yeah this is exactly my situation. I will continue and see how I feel after the summer, will probably start to look for a new job then. One with better hours and hopefully less stress.
 
Yeah I can imagine. I used to work retail and I had random days, ever changing hours and worked nearly every weekend. Now I'm working 8:30-5 in an office and any weekend work is overtime time and a half pay so it does 't feel too bad. Having normal hours has been great for my life.
 
In high school I worked ~40 hours a week in fast food in addition to going to school from ~7:30-2:20 M-F. I basically was a zombie from 9th-12th grade.

In college, I worked three jobs while taking ~15 credits a semester. Somehow, though, I actually felt like I had a fair amount of free time. Not nearly as much as most of my peers; but enough that I could relax a couple nights each week and play through a short video game each week.

I recently started my first full-time, salaried, career-job. I feel like I have absolutely ZERO free time. So to whoever was mentioning this; I fully understand. I get up at 6am and go for a quick jog, shower, and get ready. I have to be on the freeway by 7am. I have a 40 mile drive, and if I hit traffic, it can easily take an hour to get to work. I get there at 8, and other than an hour lunch, I work until 5-5:30pm each day. Which means I don't get home until about 6:30, assuming I have no errands or things to take care of. By the time I'm settled down and eating dinner, it's after 7pm. Which gives me about three hours of freedom - but I'm literally too exhausted to even play a video game. I end up just lurking the internet until bed :-/

I feel that too. My normal schedule gives me plenty of free time but over the summers overtime is a given so I've been working nonstop 50 hour+ weeks. The OT pay is nice but I'd love to leave at 5 one day instead of 7...

Yup, this is pretty much how my first job was, too. I think everyone has to find this out for themselves before they believe just how unbelievably tiring work is.
 
Finished second year of my Bachelor's of Science and I can't find a job for the summer. Must have applied to every chain store that belong in every category and a ton of office/desk jobs. Live in Toronto.

My friends haven't found a job either. I guess university students are having a tough time in Toronto? :/
 
I'm technically unemployed now too. I moved back in with my parents hoping to get a mortgage on a flat in London, which I planned to move to in to a few months later to resume freelance work (web design, graphics and photography). Well, the banks aren't lending shit so I've been stuck here for longer than I'd have wanted and doing very little freelance work.

Been getting to grips with my dads businesses a lot more in the mean time though. Never had as much influence or involvement before. For the last several years, mainly done my own thing. I can tell he doesn't really want me to go back to London. Sort of like that, this is where you transition and take over type moment. But I don't think I actually want that just yet.

I have however been keeping myself busy with a few other projects. Most notably, setting up a new online business, dealing with jewellery of all things. Lets see how it all goes. If it goes pear shaped, I've only lost out on a bit of capital and more so just time (several months), but if it goes well, well then it could net me a good income.

By my rough calculation, 3 months at 7 days a week, 16 hours a day, is 1456 hours. At $8000, works out at about about $5.50 an hour. Add in $100 a week for food and $500 a month for accommodation he gets comped, and it's roughly $7.40 an hour. Unless I've got my maths all wrong.

For those kind of crazy hours, I don't think it's pretty cool personally. But that's just me lol.
 
For anyone who has no free time because of work and school obligations: keep it up and wait it out till you're done. You ARE doing the right thing at this moment in your life. Try to remember that it won't be like that forever, and your're doing yourself a huge favor by making these time sacrifices now.

My advice, though, is to surround yourself with people in similar situations. For me, at least, it was damn nightmare to see other people going out and taking trips and shit when I was stuck at home.

Sounds pretty damn close to slavery, if you ask me. "Hey! Come work for us for free! We'll feed you and you can live with 64 other guys in a tight bunker! It'll be great!"

It's especially bad if you're indecisive and start stressing about how to optimize your free time, which shouldn't be a stressor.

Wonder if part-time work is sustainable long term if you live within your means...

My brother worked part-time for years and made good money. Like 25-30h/week. The key was to work every other weekend plus some hours after 6PM to compensate not working full-time. He had a lot of free time and decent money working retail. Jealous :(
 
Confirmed, new job starting in June. Downtown Toronto, TV gig, my own computer/extension/desk, full time hours and relatively within the 9-5 normal work day. What universe is this?

I am happy. Can always dream for more pay, but eh, this one sort of fell out of the sky after a tough year of searching. Can't possibly complain. Gonna be fun!

Depending on your contract. its 7.75 per hours for straight time, then about $12 an hour for overtime

Disclosure: they have finished all the "Interviews" for this season, there might be a way in though IDK, seasons starting soon.
And thats in quotes because they ask you three questions and then start the background check, it wasn't much.
Its $5 a day for the food and lodgings if you finish out your contract.

I chose 6 - 8 weeks, its $1060 per week.

its just hard work for the summer so I can get back into going to college

not to mention I get unemployment afterward, something like $250 a week.

With Grants I can make this work..

Congrats. I was out of work for 2 years, and I'm also in the TV business in Toronto.

I just got a job as a captioner this week. Seems like there is something in the air.
 
I was hired today too. Tech support. Shouldn't be too difficult but the hours might get intense. The staff working there was really cool.

Lucky you, this field is pretty damn competitve, everyone and their dog are help desk/computer technician/desktop support nowadays...

what area you in? and did you have a degree?

Don't forget you'll have to pay federal income tax come April for unemployment benefits you receive this year.

Degree? I'm 19. I watched them turn away middle-aged men with children and I was basically hired before the interview began. Dem certs, it's probably hard to turn away someone who got their MCSE from scratch in a two week span during middle school. I believe it's going to end up being a sales mix too.

what certifications do you have then? I just have A+ the others are quite expensive..
 
After 8 months of looking for a job I finally landed one! Working at Best Buy in the home theater dept not the greatest but beggars can't be choosers. Keep your head up people.

I wish I had A+. I applied for a job at a Tech Control Facility on Diego-Garcia That requires A+. I figured there wasn't any harm applying, even though without the cert I more than likely won't even have my resume looked at. My resume was in their system already, so it wasn't a big waste of time.

CCNA is the god-cert though. I could have had a job in January immediatly upon getting out of the military if I had one.

I have Security+, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCSE Security. I got them in 2007 on the Server 2003 lineup. My dad teaches a two week class to get all of them it so it was free for me outside of the 8 tests. It was brutal to do it all so fast and it was extremely awkward being a little kid in a class full of college grads and working people but it was worth it.

All right, job interview tomorrow and at this point I'll take anything. I just got my last unemployment check. This is some eleventh hour shit.

Any kind of luck wishing or praying if that's your thing or sacrificing poultry, whatever, and I'll take it.

I have to be honest, I'm terrified to go there, but mostly because I'm terrified I'll be rejected.

All right, your rituals worked, I got the job. Walked in ten minutes early, sat there for five minutes, and walked out with the job.

Only issues now is:

- M-S, 6 hour work weeks
- 11am-9pm every day
- wife works 8-5 and we have one car, so we need to spend the weekend thinking how this will work
- sales...I get 200/week just for showing up, but the rest is commission.
- realistically, if I have a bad week, I'll be working 60 hours and only getting 200 bucks.
- no benefits at all
- walking door to door in the glaring Florida sun and I'm a pale, 325 pound Minnesotan.



Oh well, my workaholic absentee father in law will respect me now for sacrificing everything, including family time, for a sales job. I get to be just like the man who my wife hates! YES! Thanks recession!

I hate to break it to you, but this job sounds like a scam. And they probably hire anyone willing to work there. And you probably won't even see that $200 base pay.

Just googled them ("securewatch adt dealers") and sure enough it's a pretty shady company. Some guy was saying that many of his paychecks never arrived ("administration error") and I informed my wife of this and she sides with me now and doesn't want me to do it.

This had to happen the day that I found out our security blanket, emergency money (aka our tax return) was now less than $200.

I'm pretty emotionally exhausted right now and I'm going to have a nap.



This weekend I'll be applying at every single company in this area: Kangaroos, Family Dollars, fast food places, Lowes, CVS, Walgreens...

I spend my first 25 years working in shitty jobs like Burger King, Walmart, and meat packing plants and etc (see: the "worst job you ever had" thread) and I thought I had finally made something of myself - I worked 7 years in a white collar customer service management career and I thought I'd never have to fill out an application again.

And now I'm back to "white trash work" as my dad used to call it.

That's really sad to hear. The only bright side is that your Unemployment Insurance ran out already. Some companies try to get people in to interview for crappy jobs, then threaten to tell the government if you turn down the job offer.

well if your really hard on money, and dont mind hard work, theres this cannery job I mentioned earlier, I am doing it to support a family and to continue my schooling

Trident may have stopped hiring for this upcoming season, but they might have extra considerations or drop outs, and there are plenty of other cannery places out there if not.

I'm going to spend all day tomorrow doing the "collecting apps" thing I haven't done in 10 years. I'm also going to call one that I think left me a VM two days ago but I just now noticed (and it's after 5pm).

I am not single, and I have two kids to look after. but luckily there is child care, with assistance from the government, and an understanding fiance...


while they do have six month contracts, thats not for me, but if you have done similar work then maybe it is for you, but they do direct deposit so my family will have access to the money while I am gone.

and a 6 month contract would land you at.... $25,000

Well, working at a retail store sucks but it will be better than no work. I did retail for a few month after graduating college before getting into my career, and while the pay was bad and the work was shitty, it did make me work extra hard at finding a decent job.

So I had a senior hiring manager email me late yesterday about a job on the Diego Garcia Atoll, asking questions and wondering if I would also be interested in a job at Thule, Greenland.
This is the first time I have been contacted or anything other than automated 'We are reviewing you qualifications, thank you for applying' emails.

The only problem is that one of the questions is 'When are you available for an interview or to start working.' I do not have a suit. The only thing nice I have is an all-black dress shirt, a black pair of very wide legged dress pants, and red tie that I bought for a wedding I went to. The place I got them at had a ton of suits and was cheap. My buddy got a 3-piece suit from there for a bit more than a hundo.
I know I need to buy a suit but unemployment is so cheap that I can barely cover rent and half of my bills. 75% of my wife's next paycheck is going towards rent, along with all the money I have. So I can't really obtain a suit easily.

I know I need to respond quickly to this guy, but without a suit I don't know what to do. I am afraid that if I tell him I am available immediately, that he will say "Great! We'll put you on a flight to Florida or Rochester, NY or wherever on Tuesday! See you soon!"
And then I am screwed. I could tell him that I need time to obtain a suit, but that just doesn't seem like a good idea at all.

This could just be for a phone interview or something. And once they see that I don't have a degree or certs (I think Diego Garcia requires A+ Certification, which I don't have, but I'm not sure since I get all the jobs I apply to mixed up), he could be like "Thanks but you are not who we are looking for."

I'm freaking out here.
Even if this goes nowhere, I still will need a suit for any interview and I don't see how I can afford one during the next couple months.
