Be careful what you wish for I guess. I got a job offer. I haven't been so torn in a while. I'd have to move away from family and friends, which would obviously suck, but some times you have too. The real problem is the job would entail a month or so at sea at a time. I've done it before, but i'm not really sure i want to do it again. Its really tough. But this the first real job offer i've had in a while. I'm afraid to turn it down in case i don't get another gone anytime soon. But at the same time my recent job hunts, while not successful, have been more positive then before, so if i wait I might still get a job i like more. I'm not in danger of starving, so i can turn it down, but I'm so sick of being un/underemployed. I can't sleep from thinking about it.

If you still have a decent amount of employment insurance left then no. If not and no support left then yes. It really boils down to that.

Can i ask how honestly people cant find a job after 2 months let alone a year ?

I've moved to 2 cities i have never lived in before from a small farm, Found jobs that both paid resonably well in like 16 days.

You cant just send out 3 resumes a day and then blame it on depression. Your not going to ace every interview but you keep trying. I woke up at 8am and sent out resumes first then, Went to an interview, Came home and kept applying.

Its not that hard.. Really!

I agree that you can't just do a couple a day; it is quite a numbers game, and you kind of have to 'over-fish' to finally catch just one, and even that one might slip away. But even then, it's brutal man. Where/when did you land those jobs so quickly, and what kind of jobs were they?

I agree that most people can find work within a few months if they're willing to go outside their field or drop down in pay significantly, but there are tons of other barriers in play for plenty of people, or their local job markets just blow (as so many do these days).

And trust me, it CAN just be that hard, and gets harder all the time the longer you're without work. The mental hurdle gets higher every day that you don't hear back or find something new to get excited about. Many days it feels insurmountable.

I can confidently say that even this BS minimum wage job has fired up my brain and made me much more confident and energized in my continued pursuit of full time work in my chosen field. So I mean, if you have a chance to pick up some kind of work, even if it's not ideal, do it! Especially if the conditions/people you work with will be good, even if the pay/field aren't. It'll get you into the working 'mode' again, keep some cash rolling in, and inspire some confidence in you.

Don't know what I'm gonna do at this point. My last part time position ended in January so I've been unemployed all year. I actually haven't landed any full-time work since graduating four years ago. Nothing's turned up all year.

Used a ton of different online search engines and all that's come up are either jobs that require five years of experience (even in mundane things like retail) or scams. I haven't even found any applications I'm confident enough to send my resume/CV to in weeks. This is all of course after going outside my field and dropping pay expectations. I'm finally trying to break into contract writing but nothing's come up in that area either.

The math doesn't add up. There are more people looking for jobs than employers hiring for positions. If you bury 9 bones, and send 10 dogs after them, one dog is going to come up boneless every time. Math.

Probably need to switch up my search terms just to begin with. "Entry Level" and my general zip code just aren't cutting it anymore. What do you guys usually search when you're even using these engines for work that doesn't require 5-10 years of experience in one specific field?

I ended up making a thread about it (not just to attention whore but because I have some people here on GAF interested in what happened to me after my "Getting married" thread, but I leave for my job in Greenland tomorrow.
I'm am sad about leaving my family at the moment but that money is going to be so good.
I wish everyone in here luck with finding employment.

Three months away from my two year unemployed anniversary.

Got two great job interviews thanks to temp agency (three actually, I was called in for a second interview with the president of the one of the companies because they liked me). Didn't get either.

Had to move out of house and in with...shudder...inlaws.

Car leaking oil and has a "donut" spare on it the last two months.

Got a three week temp job...temp job was over in just one week due to company being a bit over-eager...they decide to hire one of the temps...but not me. Agency swears they're trying very hard to find me a job and themselves are getting frustrated.

Inlaws think I'm still working the temp job because if they find out the truth it will be unecessary drama...so I go out in the morning and look for work and then come back in the afternoon ("got out early again..."). 20 year old kind of drama...I'm too old for this.

God, please let someone call me soon.

Welp I'm going to be looking for a job soon. I had started a company trying to do web design/social media/community management/etc. after graduating from college and I managed to keep it a float for a year but in the end it didn't really work out for me. I'm finishing off a contract and starting to look for jobs so luckily I have a consistent job history since graduation. I'm also lucky that I'm in a big city with plenty of employment. The problem is I'm really unsure of how to put starting my own company and semi-failing at it on my resume. I know I learned a ton about business and myself during the process so it wasn't a waste. I'm going to talk to career services at my old university to see if they can help me out with this on my resume. Pabst Blue Ribbon has several good management/corporate jobs in my area that I'm really tempted to send my resume to haha

You guys give good advice so perhaps someone can help me out with a particular problem I have. Just recently after being unemployed for 2 months I got offered a job as a glorified bank teller for a big up a coming bank. It doesn't pay all too well but I can make due with the pay and I can always look forward to getting a bunch of licenses and being able to move up within the company (plus pay incentives and potential pay increases). The problem for me arises when they tell me i'd start on September 4th. The date itself is not a problem but rather that I might have a possible job offer from a Mutual Firm soon. If the Mutual Firm offers me the job I want take it because I want to get into finance industry immediately. I just don't want to burn any bridges so i'm kinda stuck on what to do. Should I honor the job I have already accepted (glorified bank teller) or should I jump ship to the Mutual firm (outside sales) once I get the offer? Pay in mind that I have a degree (in Comm), live in Milwaukee (not that big of a market) and i'm in my mid twenties. Please help!

Yes, and one dog may come back with more than one bone. Especially if we're talking about part time work.

I see a lot of minimum wage jobs with zero benefits every time I job hunt, but no one is going to work that type of job. Who can blame them? Slaving away at a shitty job where you're not even getting paid a livable wage and you're not receiving any insurance either? I can't blame people for sitting at home.

have you already accepted the bank teller job? if so i'd stick it out. if not, and you think you have a reasonable shot at the finance mutual firm job i'd hold out. depends on your confidence level in getting that second offer.

All I can say is put yourself first, your employer won't.

I'm a University Student in Canada who's been working at Metro (a huge grocery store chain) for the past year, part-time, just for some side money.

I'm majoring in Human Resources Management and I really need to start looking for some experience to make the job hunt easier after I graduate. I've been thinking about sending an email to Metro's HR department in regards to a possible co-op/internship/volunteering opportunity. I'm a little scared because I don't know the kind of response I'll get and I don't want to be let down.

I also am contemplating what I should have in the email, whether I should attach my resume in the first email, etc.

I heard that Metro likes to hire from within' so I feel this could be a good way to get some real experience, as opposed to only having Deli Clerk experience on my resume and some other worthless part time gig from the past.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This thread gives me hope.

Sometimes it feels like I'm never going to be able to get hold of a full-time position. So far everything I've ever done has been part-time, contract/temp, or just so lousy that I could effectively work the max hours the business would let me and still not receive any benefits or enough money to make a decent living.

Early last year I felt like I'd finally made a big break and got a job at a well-known place and actually got paid fairly well for the number of hours it was. Unfortunately that place has limits on how long you can work there before you have to move on (so that they don't have to make you a full-time employee, and thus pay more and give benefits). Since running into that ending point earlier this year I've been struggling to get work at the other well-known places, but they keep telling me that they aren't hiring. After like 3 or 4 months I managed to get a summer position with a government program, and ended up also doing a temp position at another well-known business, but that's all over now and I'm left with nothing again. All I want is a full-time job that's stable and pays reasonably :(. My girlfriend and I want to buy a place and/or move in together, but we can't because my income is so unstable and low...

I'm not going to go back to the small-time place I used to work at as it paid so depressingly low that it was basically nothing aside from experience-building. I don't know what to do now though as for some reason the well-known place I temped at didn't ask me to continue with them in another position (as far as I know things were fine...), and the others within travel distance of my home have all told me they aren't hiring/have no spaces for anyone except those who already have a connection to the place.

It's incredibly sad to see job postings requiring just basic college degrees and a bit of experience with basic skills that I know I could do with no/little problem, and which generally pay at least 1.5 to more like 2 times what I've been able to scrape together with two degrees and job certification. I've never received benefits in my life, and every place I've worked for (except maybe a student job) has done just about all it could to avoid having to provide me with benefits. It really feels like I'll never be able to get a full-time position at this rate, despite all the effort I put into my work.

This trend that there seems to be with businesses carefully monitoring hours or putting in term limits so that they don't have to pay you benefits or make you a full-time employee should be outlawed. I hate it so damn much, and it's really starting to hold my life back.

Just needed to vent a bit. Maybe someone has advice on how to get something full-time. It seems whenever I try for things that aren't specifically in my field I just get told that I won't get picked because I don't have direct experience in the job (even if the skills are relatively simple and/or I have them already, just not in that specific context). It makes me feel pidgeon-holed in a field that refuses to give me reasonable pay/work.

There are good/great full-time positions in the field, but I just can't seem to get any of them. Some of the places require a master's (or at least say they do), and I'm working on that, but part of me is worried it's just another degree for the pile, and even if it does help it'll be several years before I see the benefits of it.

So depressing.

Turned down a $13 an hour desk support job upgrading computers to Windows 7...I just want an engineering job :( , hell I'll even do internships at this point just so I can do some coding or work with hardware.

Do you know how to code already? Why not start on some side-project, or participate in the community via GitHub or something similar. Looks good on your resume.

Turned down by the college, so retraining is not in my future. Was my last chance too since I've gotten no call back from the interview that I nailed. Time to stop eating.

Anyone used a vocal coach to deepen their voice?

no vocal coach but I did get into Toastmasters. Depending on where you get into they can be supportive and critical at the same time; fair bit of small business owners participate, so it may end up being a good way to make connections as well.

What is the etiquette for phoning a potential employer back?

I was interviewed two weeks ago and they called my references a week ago. One of the interviewers told me to call back in a week if I hadn't heard anything. So I called him last friday and left a very brief message. Still haven't heard anything. Do I attempt to call him again or just wait?

So I had an interview for the 12th today and I got a call asking whether I wanted to interview for tomorrow instead. I told them since I didn't have a car temporarily, that I would call them back. I called my parents to see if I could borrow their car and when I called back about 10 minutes later, they said the interview spot was filled and that to just stick to the interview date on the 12th. Now there are multiple positions but...

Did I just goof up?

I was accused of being "unprofessional" and discourteous today because I merely (politely!) inquired as to the flexibility of a proposed pay rate for a super short term production job I was about to accept. In my experience, this isn't unheard of at all; rates often change based on one's experience or other circumstances.

The party I was dealing with was in fact being completely unprofessional with ME; I was told that my email had been forwarded around the company, that I'd never land work with them, that they had a good laugh about me and was wished good luck with a snide smiley face in their reply. It was unbelievable. I've lost a friend and contact out of this too, since she was the one that set up this connection and was apparently ''mortified" that I didn't just bend over and take the awful low pay rate without simply inquiring and trying to negotiate for more.

Apparently it's 'unprofessional' to politely and cordially discuss terms of employment before making a commitment. Whereas it's totally okay to activate passive-aggressive mode, make slanderous comments and accusations and essentially preach the 'you'll never work in this town again' line. What a joke. I'm totally steamed that this silly girl threw these words around and actually thought she was right. I can already envision a situation where tables turn within months or years and I'll be in a position to help her out. My memory isn't so short; let's see what happens then.

Would you want to work with a place that treats you like that anyway? They saved you the trouble.

It's not good, but my mind is constantly worried about how others view me for being unemployed since college last year.

Whenever people from my old class speak to me, I always feel like they're looking down on me. Unlike them however I have mental issues to deal with, and that just makes it that much harder for me.

I guess I've just got to stay positive and know that I'll eventually lead a more successful life than them (I'm trying to boost my self-esteem by saying this), but it just gets me down.

Unemployed for 6 months now. Or rather, still have never held a job. I've been looking, but evidently not as aggressively as mostly everyone else. Hopefully this is the month to change it all.

Any tips finding like a 10/hr full time jerb? Just want something to save up for 5 months so I can move and room with a friend 2 hours away.

There's two places I know are hiring part time with no signs posted, so looking for signs seems pointless. Some businesses do it, but I saw none today on a 1 hour drive.

Online listings only have so many I'd be qualified for.

I don't know if I could handle going to random business in person. There's hundreds in a 25 mile radius.

Calling?

Try applying for city/county/state jobs. There are positions that only require a high school diploma, and others that only require two years of work in an "office environment", and many others depending on your education and experience. Some places (like the state of California, which I work for) require you to take an exam first to see if you're qualified.

I am seriously unhireable.

I have never in my life "failed" an interview until the last few years. I just spent three days taking exams, two interviews, and one job shadow all for the same position: claims with Enterprise Car Rental and swore I was finally a shoe-in. Nope, just got my rejection email.

I don't understand.

I suppose since I'm looking into entry level customer service jobs that I'm also competing with the hundreds/thousands of college students in this town who are also looking for the same work.

I don't have any other kind of experience - I can't even go to school right now.

WTF am I supposed to do? I'm even getting rejected from Family Dollar and gas station jobs because I don't answer their questions right in that evaluation dirt-level jobs require everyone to take.

My wife is ignoring me now. I know her frustration and disappointment in me, but Christ, imagine how I feel right now.

I've given up on job hunting. Had nothing but a few unsuccessful interviews every month since Dec 20th, so I'm going back to school. Entrance interview is next Tuesday - If I don't get it I'll try fasting so I can become a soldier.

So tired of getting no feedback other than "you were in the top three." Is it how I look? My voice? How I have no Facebook account?

is the no facebook account thing for real? somebody was telling me about that the other day. some seriously scary shit.

So guys I got a job at the airport (used to work there a long time ago), there's a long project underway and they needed security guards for daily night shifts. My question is, should I stick with it? Isn't staying up all nights bad for health? And I don't know how I am going to study....I need to write exams for calculus and advance functions very soon. Should I apply for other jobs or stick with the night shift?

I just got a call from Best Buy today since I applied to work at their depots but I declined. What should I do?

This is wrong. You HAVE to follow up, It shows determination and more than a passing interest. Sitting around waiting for a call is why a lot of people are unemployed.

Yeah I'd call back too, if only to say something like "Well if any position becomes available give me a call". Most likely they won't still call but at least your chances grew from 0 to 1%.

There are articles out there that make some connections to not having a facebook account and being a bit.. suspicious. Shrug. If anything, not having a facebook account can be a detriment to your job searching and networking capabilities. Whether you're into social networking or not, a facebook account can be a personal ad to sell yourself and that people use to get to know the "real" you. Of course it's a double edged sword, you want to keep pictures/opinions/stupid stuff private. Also realize that most likely only jobs with hiring departments will try and find your facebook, don't expect the local movie theater you applied to to search you out online. Though, in this generation, that wouldn't be odd either.

Only you can answer those questions. Are you going to rearrange your life to adjust to the new schedule or do you not want to? Weigh the pros and cons and decide. Being up at night isn't detrimental to your health, not sleeping is. If you're going to be resting during the day there's no issue. Seems like you jumped the gun on declining other jobs though.

Just apply. I had two different interviews with Bank of America last year and they actually encourage you to apply to other positions that may be more suitable.

Going to be dropping my resume off at a small business clothing store tomorrow, don't know whether to be excited or not:/ saw their now hiring sign in the window, I guess I'm just nervous cause I had a bad experience at my last job.

Haven't posted in a while so I'll update.

I've had three promising interviews in the last month, two for the same position. In fact, my second was just yesterday. It didn't begin well. I failed to shake his hand firmly, to which he promptly said "Shake it firmly". I felt embarrassed. I was then later asked what I knew about the company, and whilst I did research on them for the initial interviewer (and answered that same question), that was several weeks ago and I failed to give a coherent answer. Horrible start, eh? Well it got better.

Anyway what I wanted to share was that they noticed me for my cover letter. It was quite very frank and honest, none of the cliches, and that praised me for it. So thats the recommendation I could give you guys when applying for roles
