and would saying not to contact previous employers hurt me?

I don't see what harm it would do to put it down. Only reason why I would say no to contact previous employer was if I was still working there. Legally, they can't say anything bad about you, other than to confirm your dates of employment. If they did say anything bad, it may be grounds for a lawsuit/slander.

I have been looking for a job for over a year now.
I have not had any luck...until now. But there is a 'problem'.

There is a position that is pretty much mine for the taking if I want. It's a very niche thing and they were so impressed with the academics on my resume that THEY have been trying to convince me to take the job. I'm not crazy about the job, but it is not bad either.

But now I just got an email tonight from another job that I would much rather have. But I would still need to go through with the interview process, so it is not a guarantee like the other one.

The problem is, the first job would need me to start immediately.

So yeah, any advice on this dilemma? Even just like how I should approach the thought process for it.

Take the first one bruh. A bird in the hand...

Agreed 100%. The job that you might not entirely like is offering you employment NOW. You don't want to be unemployed any longer than you have to, man.

I guess I should throw my name in the hat as well. I'll be unemployed for a month as of next week, and holy crap. I thought I had problems sleeping back when I had a job! Its ALL I think about. What do I do if my savings run out? Should I let bills like electricity go unpaid just to keep a few more dollars in the bank to go towards other things? Do I let taxes take their 15% from my unemployment pay, or do I take it in the rear come tax season and get full pay now? Still using childcare gives me the freedom to go to the workforce center and job seminars. Do I save some money and keep the kid at home?

I can't even imagine what I'm going to do if my money runs out and all I get is unemployment (which isn't enough to pay all the bills). Brotha might hafta hustle to make ends meet...

Well, I start my new job next Monday. Anyone still unemployed, hang in there and don't stop looking. Been unemployed for 13 months.
Definitely thankful this Thanksgiving.

Back in early 2011 I moved to Washington, DC because of its strong job market and because I was trying to break into the gov't agency/think-tank market. (I graduated with a degree in political science.) I blew through my savings in 7 months and only managed to get a temp job shortly thereafter. I've got a permanent job w/ benefits now, but it was a rough ride getting to this point. I would absolutely caution against moving somewhere without a job lined up in advance.

If you're concerned (as I was) that local applicants may be given preference, you may consider putting on your application the address of a family member or friend who lives in the area.

To all unemployed/underemployed GAF: I invite you to peruse my blog for employment-related and personal finance advice. With experience in HR (and with experience out of work, as mentioned before), I hope many of you will find at least some of the advice valuable in your pursuit of gainful employment. I wish all of you the best of luck.

I am now unemployed.

I worked in Marketing and I am getting laid off.

Fucking sucks.....and the worst part about living paycheck to paycheck is that I'm fucked for next month. Merry christmas....extreme stress.

Tater Tot

"My God... it's full of Starch!"
I had 1.5 credits and now due to a system error I have .5 credits. Every day of the week that you miss work you get a credit subtracted from your total, once you reach zero you are fired from the company. I feel extremely stressed, I don't want to get fired over christmas break, I'll go crazy! I am not officially unemployed but I am walking that thin red line.

I think I am getting fired soon. 4 years I poured into this, and then you realize that it can all be taken away. :(

The fucked up thing is that it can happen tomorrow next week, next month. They know months in advance, yet they'll keep you coming until one day boom your fired. I have seen it before.

Paycheck to paycheck. It took me a year to drag myself out of a hole I created the last time I went through this. I have high anxiety about going through it again. Uber depressed.

I already know its happening, but I will not go and beg, or build an alliance with those that could help me, I know its stupid to do that. If they valued the work I do, then it would be a non issue. I think I am liked by 95% of the people here, but those one or two people who are envious, or jealous, or just don't like you can really ruin your life.

I am confident in my personality, and my skills. Where I lack is in networking. Its going to be hard to find another job. Why can't I find a place to work 20 years, and not have to worry about this every 3-4 years. :( What happened to loyalty.

That's kind of a twisted and sadistic system to use for human beings.

I think this is the worse thing about today's job market. Long gone are the days when you could work a few decades for a company, retire and collect your pension. Now it's jumping from job to job, hoping you can land on your feet, all the while nervous about the next round of layoffs. I've seen it happen to my mom already in the last few years, and I'm afraid as people like her get older there will just be more of a reason for companies to look to get rid of someone at that age.

I am 36, and I worry about aging, and how it will effect me. So I understand how you feel about your mom.

I wish I had the entrepreneurial spirit, so that I would have to worry about this all the time.

My chest hurts. If companies were as loyal as I am a worker.......................I just don't understand the thinking that goes into these decisions, and I am in HR. So bizarre.

So I'm unemployed at the end of the month. I'm so pissed.

I have experience in Marketing, Manufacturing and Construction.

I hate construction (even being a surveyor as I once was) so that's out.

Taking off work to go to temp agency tomorrow. FML :(

I've been in the unemployed crowd for a little over a month now. Quit my last job. Yeah, doesn't seem like the best of ideas but considering the commute, it was too hard to work and look for a new job. Fast forward a month - have a Skype interview with a digital marketing company in the coming days. I feel confident. My experience is in line with the requirements and its a small company. Other than a marketing video I wrote for my previous employer, I have no experience in the field. My experience is in writing ad copy. Yet, I feel good about this place. Quick response to my application.

Hopefully, only a matter of time.

Digital marketing agency? If you get hooked up, hook me up with a name and i'll find my way. I'm a jack of all trades marker.

What happened to loyalty.

It used to be that employees could reasonably expect to spend their entire careers working for one employer, that a reasonable amount of trust existed on both sides. Employees were loyal because they were offered stability and employers benefited from an experienced work force that would not depart for greener pastures at the drop of a hat.

Those days are over. Loyalty does not, and should not, exist on either side. You can expect to be fired or have your position outsourced if it means the company can increase profits. And companies are used to losing trained employees because promotion and advancement more often takes place through changing jobs than it does climbing the ladder internally.

It's a cynical way to look at things, but it's also more realistic than expecting to give your loyalty to a company that actively cares about your welfare in return for stable employment.

I've been unemployeed for about 2 weeks now. I had a job being a warehouse supervisor and hated it. It was 3rd shift and all I did was sleep and work. I just stopped going in and evenutally quit last Wednesday (used the the last of my vacation time for thanksgiving). I'm 31, but basically I've been living off of my parent's money. I had a very rough year (break ups/moving/anxiety) and they have been extremely helpful. Some days it feels really great to wake up, apply for jobs then have the afternoon off, other times I feel like garbage. I had a pretty promising interview at Pepsi doing regular warehousing (although getting paid more than I made being a supervisor) so I'm holding out for that. It gets frustrating seeing the same job postings you just applied for on the same job websites. I currently have around 10 applications I've emailed out, in a week and Pepsi is the only one that's called me back.

Just filled out an application for college. I'm pretty much exploring all my options at this time.

It can be depressing. Time off feels so good, and it re energizes you but then after two weeks you feel worthless, embarrassed, "Why is my GF still with me" "I feel like a loser, I can't afford to take her to a movie"

Fuck those feelings man. I hate feeling inadequate, because I am such a proud and vein person.

There's no rules. There's no perimeters. There's no feelings.

You got anarchy. So... 5-10 years from now, they're gonna wish there was Liquidsnake. 5-10 years from now, they're gonna miss Liquidsnake.

Got some awesome news at work today. As of next year my employer is forcing us to cut back on our workforce to barebone levels. I have to let three of my guys go, and of course they want me to dump my three most experienced guys while keeping the low paid temps that don't know squat. I hate being put in this position, but if I wasn't than it would be my ass on the chopping block.

How the hell am I supposed to tell my most loyal employees that the company is going to pay back their years of dedication with a middle finger and a boot out the door?

I'm starting a new job on December 17th, but my current employer didn't take too kindly to me giving notice and told me to leave, so now I'm in the middle of a 3 week unemployed run

Sigh....

just got a call from a temp agency

The thing about warhousing is that they don't care how much experience you have or even your education (I have a degree in computer networking) all they see is warehouse/manual labor. Some staffing company calls me up and offers an insulting amount of money. I ask if they're flexable on the pay rate, and they say no. So I say I'm not interested, then the guy seems to get annoyed. I went through my emails to see if I actually applied for the job and I didn't, the guy just found my resume on careerbuilder/Monster/etc.

Then I get paranoid and think that might have been my only offer.

To be honest if I was in your position I would have taken it in the meantime and kept on looking. Its better to have something short-term then nothing at all

Why would you not take it and look for something else on your time off?

What is a college student supposed to do to get a job?

I literally applied to every company in my town and havent received a single call back or email. I've followed up on every single one of them, but nothing. I've even applied to fast food restaurants and they even turned me away.

Do you have any work experience? Volunteer experience?

The fast food joints probably consider you over-qualified too

The last freelance gig I had was in September. I haven't done anything since and it's starting to get depressing. No leads. I feel like I've got nowhere to start. I'm going to school Full Time but I feel like I'm doing a very poor job looking for work.

apply for UPS, they are litterally hiring everyone. They have people that drive with the UPS driver setting up deliveries. Doubt you'll have a job after Christmas but it'll be something.

That has not been my experience, but i do know many who experience this. What I would suggest is to find a job in an industry that has a limited market of employees. I work in computer forensics and I would estimate that less than 100 people are qualified to do this work in my city. Another example would be an air traffic controller. In the case of computer forensics, you can learn most/if not all on the job and through experience/continual education while on the job.

Would I need to show up at the UPS warehouse or apply online? There are no openings showing up online.

Edit-- Closest place they are hiring is about 15 miles away.

go to indeed/monster/search engine and look that way. or theres a career button way at the bottom of UPS, unless you live no where close to a UPS fulfillment place, try fed ex, both are hiring for the holidays.

15 miles is too far away?

Nope, I applied. Just a little worried about putting more milage on my car and gas. I also drive 60+ miles a day for school (Worst Decision I made in a while).

Walk onto a construction site ask to speak with the foreman, then ask if he has heavy shit that needs to be done. (2X4, bags of cement, wheel barrows of sand/rocks) ask if you can sweep up saw dust and clean up off cuts.

I used to work at UPS back when I was an undergrad, and I didnt last 2 weeks. Loading those trucks during holiday season was not fun. You literally have dozens of boxes coming in at one time in a fast ramp aimed at the inside of your truck and you have to grab each box and arrange them into a nice "wall." The boxes never stop flowing in and they vary in size and weight, so you're playing a real life Tetris with these different packages as they're pouring in and you have to create this neat wall.

My nails, mouth, and nostrils were always congested with soot and there was rarely any coworker interaction because everyone else was either busy breaking their backs or too high/drunk to communicate with.

I'd work at UPS again than be broke but I'd gladly take an unemployment check over that headache any day of the week.

On my way to an interview right now. Crazy that I had almost no responses for about a month and a half, and now I have four opportunities within the span of about two weeks. Downside is that only one is long term, but I can't complain too much.

I had applied to this role back in September, several times actually, even handed in a CV personally as the job site was about 15 minutes away from my home. I heard nothing back, so naturally thought the role was already gone.

Then just this week I see the same role advertised and when I can call, they claim to already be going through the interview stages. The gentlemen on the phone implied I was a little late. But he seemed oblivious that there was a similar role advertised months prior, and that the company had a list of names of people who were interested.

I'm a little annoyed. I've been hoping for this role for months and they just completely ignored those who had applied in the last batch.

I then asked if I could just work there in an unpaid position, sort of like volunteering, but I got shot down "we're private sector, we dont do that". I was confused.

If they're not paying you then it's illegal.

Yet it happens all the time regardless. I spent a few months "volunteering" at a place, only to find out the help I'd been providing was previously a paid position that got removed back when the place had budget issues, shortly before I started there.

I started applying for warehouse temp agencies.

So I get a call last Thursday from a company that found my resume on Monster and had a warehouse position. The guy calls me, tells me about the job, then asks if I can go to their website and fill out a quick application (the quicker the better). I go there and it looks janky as hell, and the application link isn't even a link, it's like a .gif. I eventually find a way into the application fill it out really quick call the guy back. He doesn't answer but calls me back in about an hour. He thanks me for filling it out quick and gives me the standard phone interview. He then asks if I could be available for a face to face interview on Monday, I say yes. He says he'll email me all the info, and if I don't get it within an hour, to let him know. I get nothing, email him back, and he never responds. Why would he go through the trouble of setting everything up to not follow through on it? The whole thing seemed sketchy anyways.

Yesterday I sent my resume to a temp agency, then I went to the doctors, so I muted my phone. In that time I got a call from a random number, and no voicemail. I googled the number and nothing came up, I was sitting around this morning and decided to call from my old cell phone (through MagicJack) because it masks my real number so if it was some telemarketer or collection agency they wouldn't know who called. I go into my recent calls to get the number and (I shit you not) a voicemail pops up from the agency. I spent all last night on my phone and I saw nothing. When it did pop up it even came up with a ringtone, like it was new, but dated yesterday. So instead of instantly returning his call, I call back the next day at 10:30, which makes me look lazy.

Has anyone ever had that happen? I'm on iphone 4s At&T, I don't even know who's at fault here.
