anyone else unemployed?

After being unemployed for over a year I FINALLY got a job. In brief, it was the most frustrating and upsetting time of my life.

I sent my resume out to everyone with follow up calls and was lucky if I even received an email informing me that they went another direction. Oddly enough, I got my job from not doing a single damn thing. A recruiter called and everything worked out... really quickly. Almost seems like the less you do to find a job.. the more opportunities come your way.

Being unemployed that long sucks and all... but being back at work just feels soooo strange now. It feels like shock or something. I'm sure by the end of the week I'll be back into the swing of it. Regardless, hooray working again!

Thank you. I finish Highschool so I never got test my theory out, but I knew no one ever checks those things. Screw the GED. That's the thing that gets me. People apply for low level jobs and lament that they never finished highschool so they will never get a good job. That's a myth! Chances are that if you dropped out, then you don't work in an area where one matters. Lie to get ahead. If you can do the work then it ultimately doesnt matter.
I have friends who dropped out of high school and made more than I did with my four year degree, AND who are still employed today (living comfortably) while I'm out of job and barely scraping by.

It's a fucking joke.

Yep, and I haven't come up with anything. HR says no one else has had trouble scheduling on the site, either, and I'm at a total loss as to what the problem is.

They send an email with a link to a Taleo-based site that says "click the link below to schedule or decline an interview date" but there's nothing there to click on. I've turned pop-off blockers off, tried the site on Chrome, IE9 and Opera (older and latest versions of all three) and even tried on my phone.

Furthering my frustration: the store I'm applying for is in downtown Seattle, calling the HR department routes me to the corporate office in another part of Seattle, and they can't/won't help me schedule the interview because all the emails and data go through a separate company in Florida who then forward the applications and schedules back to the individual stores.
How bizarre. I honestly believe these ultra-complex online job application systems are one of the worst things to happen in job hunting for a long time. I recently sat through this "online personality assessment" and have waited a month for a response back, what happened to good-old email for interview invites/scheduling? Best of luck, the only other thing I can suggest is visiting the store in person and asking to see someone.

I am, but I am also a college student who hasn't been looking for a job that badly. Money isn't to tight and I do like the extra time to compensate for me waiting to the last minute study.

Speaking of which, does GAF have a procrastination thread?

I graduated exactly one year ago with a BS in Business Management (and studied economics as a second major) and a GPA of 3.95, and I have yet to land a job other than the shitty one I'm currently at right now. I live in NYC, so there are of course plenty of opportunities for me, but I just can't find them. Perhaps I'm not looking in the best places, or the market is really that bad... I don't know.

I would actually appreciate some advice here. Thankfully I am WORKING, but I definitely deserve a better job after all the hard work I've done. The only decent job search engine I've encountered is Craigslist, honestly, and that's still full of scams. All the others link to third-party sites that each force you to sign up with it in order to submit your resume and shit, making the whole process really annoying and tedious.

My situation has some similarities to some along with some differences.

Lets just say I graduated college back in May 2008. I was guaranteed a job at the place my Dad worked at for years back when I lived in the Midwest. Unfortunately, layoffs hit and they were no longer needing people. I had to start from scratch job searching (I didn't do a lot of job searching in college because my senior project was in trouble, and I had to make it work in order to get my degree). My education was getting a BS in an Electrical Engineering type major (one of the most difficult majors in my college with a GPA above 3.5). I was one of the top students and all Professors loved me. They wanted me to get a Master's. I wanted one, but would be in deep dept if I did, and I honestly didn't know where I wanted to go with it.

So anyway, I ended up being unemployed for a little over a year. I had a few phone interviews, but no luck due to not enough experience or other reasons. Also, since I was living in the Midwest at the time, finding a job there was very difficult.

In Feb. 2009, I get a call from a college friend who lost his job, about how he had an interview/test for some Electronics Technician job on the East Coast. Initially I never wanted to move to the East Coast, but after having no luck, I decided to call the HR and seeing if they'd be interested in me. While my degree exceeded the requirements (only needed a 2 year degree), I was just glad to finally be employed initially doing something. Funny because I contacted about the job in Feb. 2009, but didn't start until June 2009. I also felt the job would be temporary because I was planning to move into an Engineering position once my six months was up. Unfortunately, they stopped hiring entry level engineers after that (keep in mind that my friend and I had no knowledge about the positions until we got there). So I decided to at least stay at my job for over a year in order to keep my relocation funding.

Late last year, I started to really get sick of my job and feel the need to want out. I put my resume together again and started applying for other jobs within my company. My resume got some looks, but no luck. I did have one interview back in early March, but didn't get the job because they wanted someone with more related experience and MS degree who could help out sooner. I decided to start looking for jobs elsewhere in March 2011, no matter where (even if I prefer to stay in my area).

So far, lets just say that job searching has been a pain. I cannot tell you how many times I see interesting job postings, but they require 3-10+ years experience I lack. Some jobs I fit well and have 2 years working experience, yet they want directly related engineering, software, etc. experience i don't have. And some entry level positions (to give me the experience I need) only want those who graduated less than a year ago. So it has become REALLY hard for me to find a job I can apply to.

But at the same time, I've been getting a decent amount of phone interviews, and some in-person interviews (some I had, some are still coming). One I had on last Friday while taking me in, felt like the position would not be challenging enough for me. Some felt I would be too good for entry level, but not enough related experienced for level 2. I had some companies tell me I could apply for a tech job, and it's basically the same exact job I have now that I'm trying to get out of. I had many ask me why I want to leave my job (on interviews), and I keep telling them I want to do something I enjoy more, utilizing my degree and stuff.

Good news is my current job pays well and I'm employed. Bad news is my job is so restrictive on letting me prove myself, work awkward hours (making it hard for me to interview for other jobs), some co-workers are really immature (I can understand having fun in the workplace, but many go way too far), and I'm just not doing what I fully enjoy doing (which I went to college for). I don't care about taking a paycut, just want a job better suited towards my degree that I'll enjoy more. I'll be honest, most people would probably see my job as awesome because its easy and pays well. I want to be challenged a bit more and want something I can actually move up in (not just stay in the same position the rest of my life going no where, where my salary is about to hit the ceiling).

If I can't find another job by Summer, I may just leave my job and go back to school getting a Master's (I saved up money), then I'll restart the job searching again being fresh out of college.

I can understand all the crap people have to go through to find another job. Been there, done that, and doing it again.

So I just found out that the interview tomorrow is only going to be a preliminary and informal interview, and the real interview will be another day (if I do well). Never really had an informal interview, is this still a suit & tie thing?
I would say wear a suit and tie. As for your earlier salary question, try salary.com, indeed.com, or glassdoor.com.

Graduated from college in 2008 and still haven't found a single permanent job. Shit is getting ridiculous, probably because I don't interview very well.

Been unemployed for some time now, after my parent's business went under (civil engineering). Going back to school for IT. Don't really know what I want to do anymore, my life is aimless. I can barely focus on school at all and have zero motivation to do anything. It doesn't help that whenever I do send out 50+ applications I get maybe one response, and even then I don't get the job because someone better qualified shows up for the interview as well. I can't even get a job at any of the old places I worked at anymore, seems they're no longer hiring.

I have barely enough money to eat on my current budget and I'm quickly running out of savings. My only monthly expenditure that I don't really is need is $22 for TERA. Pretty soon I'm going to have to drop that too. With gas prices getting ever higher I might not even be able to drive to school anymore lest I starve to death. I'm running out of options and I have nowhere to turn.

Thinking about quitting school at this point and going full-time job hunting, but even then if my recent success is any indication it might as well be a fool's errand. Fuck. :(

what is TERA?
also if you live in a college town, you should just get rid of your car.
also if you have an engineering degree, just look further than your area. you're employable as shit

what do you want to do with your business degree?

Where are you working? You might be interested in knowing that when we in business hire freshly minted graduates, we're not interested in you running the show at first - we're interested in you 1) showing you can take instruction and 2) show a little initiative, even if it's just throwing out what you think is a good idea every so often.

It's amazing what the "self-esteem" movement has done to people - here is a great clip on it:

Sometimes you have to be the coffee guy - it goes farther than you think.

I work for GameStop as an Assistant Manager. I have a good degree from Ohio State. I can't get that foot in the door anywhere. I'm not even applying for management at these different places. Location isn't a big deal either. Also, I don't have a self-esteem issue. I work hard but I'm just tired of the way my DM and co-workers treat me.

worked as a temp to perm for the past 3 months and they finally hired me on full time on monday.

feels great to finally have job security but stressful times at work right now made monday not so exciting. this weekend is hardcore partying time though.

I've got a job offer, but I'd have to move across the country. I'd like to take the job, but I don't have the money to move.

Friend said someone at her work quit and they are hiring. I'm going in tomorrow to put in an application. Hopefully this is it because I'm so tired of looking for a job.

How does one do temp work? I'm thinking about movie to a larger city, and it might be a good thing to do while looking for a solid job.

I got re-hired on my old cybercafe last week (havent worked there in over 2 years), and i already hate it again.

Before that i got around with some light graphic design freelance stuff and some video editing work, also mantaining a website. I still do all of that, but since i was working from home i thought it would be a nice opportunity to get on a work envrionment again. I guess i was basically unemployed, just doing small stuff every once in a while here and there, and i never thought id miss it more.

Man, this sucks, this really really sucks. I totally forgot how i kinda hate to deal with customers and such. And the conditions im working in are disastrous. I could seriously sue the owner, but i guess he was some kind of friend back in the day, so im holding up and trying to give him a hand (business hasnt been so good). I get little pay, about 8 hours a day, the bathroom is currently out of service, and every time i open the joint i see and squash at least 1 or 2 cockroaches. Funny thing considering how it has computers with very nice rigs and a 120GB PS3 on a 50 inch plasma screen on the back room.

Plan is; help the guy get back on his feet, work for about 3 months, use the money to upgrade my computer, and then im fuckin OUT OF THERE.

Let's see if i can hold up :/

You best bet to get some temp work is to apply for temp agencies. They will find jobs out there for you.

I didn't go through a temp agency myself but it was temp to perm for the actual company I was working at. Being a temp is not bad at all and if it wasn't for me being a temp, I probably wouldn't of gotten full time.

Temp jobs, you really never know how long you are really going to be there. Just do a good job and you never know, they might hire you.

why stop looking for more jobs while you're at this temporary job?

I'm really glad I switched out of business management as my major. I started college with that, but soon started thinking about the realization of it as a undergrad degree. If I were a company or recruiter I would have a hard time wanting to hire someone in a management role when they (likely) have no management experience. Sure some might have managing retail, or a shop around campus, but at the end of the day that's not quite the same as to what companies are looking for. Most of my friends that I know as management end up doing shitty rotational programs, that try and build leadership and pigeon hole you into weird areas of the company.

But either way, look up, you live in NYC, one of the best cities in the world, and you have a transcript that clearly shows you cared about higher education. Just keep applying all over and you'll find something. Craigslist is pretty dumb, especially in a higher concentrated area like NYC, network with people, talk to people in person/via phone, and just keep pushing what works on your resume (your grades is a starter). Do you have work experience?

Film school takes a lot of my time, we're gonna start pre-production on a new short film around August/September, so im gonna want to focus on that. Im still going to have the web maintenance/graphic design gig, so its good. Like i said, i wasnt really looking for a job, old boss called me and asked for help, i looked at my rig, and said "yeah, sure". The other smaller stuff gives me enough money to have around, considering i live with my parents of course.

I never "stop" looking for jobs though, there's just moments where i try harder and moments when i dont think about it so much. Hopefully i'll get into something more serious next year considering itll probably be my last one formally studying this whole "film" shenanigans ;P

just landed a decent job, 2008 college grad here. i used careerbuilder daily the passed 2 weeks until I finally landed one sort of in my field (graduated with a bio degree). tomorrow is the first day, start at 6 am, fucking ay :(. Haven't done that in years!

good luck everyone!

Not in my experience. I get tons of garbage, insurance sales and scam jobs from Careerbuilder.

Recent college grads (particularly business majors), save yourselves with grad school. The economy is better now, if you do decently well and are presentable you'll land a quality Fortune 500 position with good advancement prospects pretty easily.

No offense to those who want to be retail managers, but if you want more it's a ton easier just to hop on the fast track through more school rather than try to be that guy who works his way up by being awesome at a terrible job.

So what's the normal timetable for a company to get back at you? I had an interview on May 3. I was there for two hours talking with HR, the manager for the position I'm looking at, and his boss. The manager and HR both said to me that if they didn't want a candidate, they would let them know "right away". It's been a week and a half and no word. I just hate the waiting game.

I just landed a job at a Fortune 500 from retail based on my interview alone, if you can interview well I think you can do whatever you want.

I'm pretty much in the same situation. 2nd year uni, living at home so getting a job isn't a necessity, but at the same time I haven't had a job since high school and though I horded the money I earned from that its currently down to $50. I'd really like to go to Japan/ Korea over the summer next year. And move out. Neither of which I will be able to do the way things are headed.
I'm kind of in an awful position where I'm now "too old" to work fast food, but don't have the experience to work as a barista/ receptionist/ most other part time jobs. And everyone wants people to have a ton of experience. Or work 30 hours a week, which I just can't do with Uni happening. I'd like to get a job that has relevance to my course, but its Asian languages. And Japanese/ Korean restaurants don't hire white people. So what other options do I have left?

Someone I managed to get a job interview at this pizza place (which is better than no job at all), which I did yesterday, and majorly screwed up. She asked a bunch of questions that took me off guard, and I was so nervous. Still, I hope she takes pity on me and employs me anyway :p

I just want to say hang in there for anyone that is job searching. Its been about a year of job searching since I graduated from my Master's program and today I finally got a job offer. The position is with a well known company and it looks like it might offer some great opportunities for growth.

There were definitely some times when I got extremely discouraged and depressed but I kept doing what I could to get my resume out there. My efforts finally paid off and I'm definitely looking forward to working again. It will definitely be a weird after feeling like a bum for the last year though.

Hopefully you'll still hear something from them. Did you make sure to send a thank you note after the first interview? It can help to show that you are very interested in the position and reiterate your qualifications.

If you are going to voluntarily loose your job, then you should let other Gafers get a shot at it. What kinda job was it? Are they hiring your replacement soon? Were you under performing to help set their expectations low? What is the pay?

i did.

Was working at restaurant that just closed down. Bad timing too since I am going away on the 25th. Found a replacement for a bit helping my dad by the docks then on the 24th have a job interview for Geek Squad.

Everything seems to be working out.

This week should be better! I have an appointment with an Air Force recruiter Monday and a private open house that I was invited to for a major auto dealer. I applied for them last week and they emailed me to network/speak with their executives and to have interviews. This is quite nerving as I have never attended such a thing outside of college career fairs. Any advice from employed-Gaf on how to approach this?

Also, what's the best website to find apartments on? I have to move by June 1st and I have been too busy to look around as my current place is too much now. Small budget :(

it's pretty much impossible to give a good general guideline applicable even to a single company, much less applicable to all positions in the world. BUT it's very likely that if you haven't heard within their rough timeframe that they've moved on and are either waiting for someone to accept and keeping you on the hook in the meanwhile, or just flat out don't give a shit about you once you're no longer a candidate. it's actually kinda messed up how many places employ the latter approach, so as a job seeker you mostly have to grin and bear it. if they've exceeded their timeframe and are no longer responsive, it is possible to prod them by saying you are going on more interviews or have other offers or whatever (so long as that's true) but even that is no guarantee.

i've got some friends who do hiring, mostly in legal and biz dev, and even though all the advice about thank-you notes and all that is nice (and can sometimes be effective, certainly the "why not?/no harm" rule is often applicable here), for many jobs it really doesn't matter they either like your resume+interview and they will pursue you or you're dead to them

Not sure how many times it has been mentioned so far in this thread, but job hunting sucks utter balls.

Worst offender being when recently an agency brought up that they were looking for a person with experience for a junior role.

Yeah I find that employers will often list more necessary experience on their job listings than the position probably needs. When I first graduated from undergrad I felt like I saw lots of entry level type engineering positions that were asking for 2 years of experience.
