Hi

In talks to start managing an online store. Working from home yey, cross fingers.

Good for you, I remember when you announced your 'dismissal'.

So does managing mean people, or actually working on the site?

If they ask why you haven't been working for a few years, then you could just say for medical reasons but that you are in good health now. I don't think they can really legally press the matter further during the interview.

Correct. It is against the law for an employer to ask you if you have ANY medical condition. However, I am not sure I would even say that.

So, I have an interview tomorrow. I've actually been unemployed for a few years now, so I'm sure that will come up at the interview. Should I tell them that my clinical depression kept me from seeking a job during that time and that I've sough treatment and I'm out of the doldrums, so to speak? Do employers tend to understand the seriousness of depression and look at it as a valid medical reason for not being employed?

If you don't want the job, tell them that.

No employer would tell you that's why they didn't hire you, but if I'm in HR, no way I'm hiring someone who says that, sorry.

The probably look at it as a valid reason not to ever hire you. Don't talk about it and try to cook up a different reason for your absence from the job market.

Just got canned at a supermarket I've been working for at least 10 years. I was full time and they terminated me for not following company policy as per to my position. This was the first time I got thrown out which was a week ago and my D.M. told me today I'm bye bye. I'm 25 right now and living in NJ under my mother's roof. I'm feel a little bit guilty that I got shafted, I never had any problems during my tenure working there but kind of relieved that I'm out of there cause it was my first job. I really don't know what to do right now, I don't even know if I could collect unemployment???? What to do, what to do? :(

Where are you ?Try the site PM live. Anyhow i was just given the "it's not you, it's me" speech from a job interviewer. About 280 people applied, so i am feeling awesome to get to the last 8. I went to the interview and answered the questions to the best of my ability. They said that on paper, my CV looked great; in person i was fucking amazing. However as a result they thought i'd be gone soon (partially true, i had applications for my masters done at this point).

TLDR: I didn't get a job because i was too awesome.

I don't know how to feel right now.

I am in NJ, USA. I have tried the following sites with little luck in getting response by any pharmaceutical company. :|

Indeed
monster
careerbuilder
lab support
Joule
etc

I believe if you were fired for cause, you would be unable to collect unemployment. Your best bet is to file for it, then see if the company challenges it.

It is best to file either way, and seek a hearing before the labor board. Many employers, particularly those is service industries, tend to fight against unemployment compensation as a norm. But just because they said you didn't follow policy when you were let go doesn't mean you aren't eligible for benefits. Make them prove it.

i just found out i wasn't picked for a job i interviewed for on saturday. sucks. anyone have experience with job placements companies? from what i understand they help place you in jobs but take a decent % of your check.

i know they work for our company. we have 5 people who've been placed and then picked up for full time after 5 months..

they either skim a bit off your check or the company pays for it. the company can hire you full time though if everything works out and your'e home free. it's good for experience, contacts, and possible string free employment.

good info ill give them a look. are their big national companies that do that or does each city have kind of their own? when i search "job placement agencies" for my city quite a few come up and im not sure who i should try first

Sorry for the late reply there CrankyJay. I worked as a receiver and we had a situation where one of our vendors was stealing their own products back as soon as we scanned them in. So they got caught once they did it again but security went back to the tapes all the way from January and see me handcounting the product in from this vendor instead of scanning it off the product. I would scan the the scansheet that the vendor produce because some vendors we do that with. Well apparently, they have me on tape one time not even checking the product in which I refute but they have it on tape. I really don't know why I did that because I check everybody that comes in so thats my fault. Maybe I was having a bad day/sick/I dont fucking know but it happen.

So based on that footage, they threw me out once they discovered it which was last Friday and today I had a brief meeting with my district manager and told me he to terminate me due to I wasn't following company policy as per my position. He told me I could put him down as a reference because I was well like by him and all of management cause I'm always working, going out of my way to help the store out.

So right at this time, I'm gonna file for unemployment online and hope for the best. I really don't like the situation I'm in cause I have several debts I owe which I've been paying on time and fixing my credit that was fucked back in the day. I like to go back to school again, for what, I dont know but I know I still have my youth so anything can happen. I hate being optimistic but it sure beats depression which I surely overcome during my teens/early 20's. Gotta look up and not down. And if anybody from Northerner NJ/NYC area is looking for a hiring hand for whatever. I'm your man!

Yes but will start my summer job at the beginning of July (thought I would start today but an error was made). Not working as much as I would like this summer compared to previous years but the experience is resume quality that will help for after graduation.

I went to a job fair for a grocery warehouse selecting job.

Went into a large computer lab and sat down to fill out an application. I wore a nice shirt and tie and dress pants and shoes. People were there in pajamas, dirty wife beaters and flip flops.

They made an announcement that if you were on parole or a convicted felon and didn't have certain forms, they would not be able to see you. Literally half the room got up and left.

Listening in on some of the interviews, people were 7th grade drop outs or had some really shady stuff going on with criminal records. I felt that if I couldn't get a call back I should just drive off the bridge on the way home.

So, when it was my turn, the girl there looked at my app, looked at my resume, then clicked yes about 50 times on the computer and now I have an interview on Tuesday next week at the warehouse!

Here's hoping it works out, it's good $.

I used to be a recruiter and it depends. Everyone I placed was paid for by the company- it didn't get deducted from their check. Of course my postitions tended to be all professionals getting permanent placements (i.e. not "contractors" working FOR me at that company) so take that as you will.

My pay went from $12 to $18 when I permed. I have no idea what KForce was getting.

If the agency offers benefits, check on their enrollment dates. I missed the cutoff by like 2 or 3 days, so I had to wait two months (in the end only getting a month or so total).

Just wanted to drop in and post some encouragement since I was posting in here not long ago.

I graduated college in Dec 2008 and went to live with my parents while looking for my first out-of-college job. I worked for a tech support center for 3 months in the interim, but overall it took me 8 months to find my first job in September 2009, and I got the job because my best friend worked there (a small software company).

I got let go from there in August 2010 because the company was having financial issues (my friend, and 3/4 the staff left or got let go not long after), so I was back on the job hunt, which is when I began posting in here.

I searched for jobs for another 8 months until finally getting a job at Fisher Controls (an Emerson Process Management owned company) in IT. My father works here and saw the job posting come up thankfully.

Moral of the story is, get out and meet people, comb your friends and families for any open positions they may have seen in a company email or things of that nature.

It sucked looking for jobs for a year and a half out of the past 3 years, but in the end you do get to where you want to be. Keep your chin up unemployed-Gaf!

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they don't think you were in on it with the vendor. That's pretty crazy that the vendor would do that. I used to work in a grocery store, too.

Same...I used an IT placement firm and they set me up on a contract to hire. They don't take money out of your paycheck. I got my full pay. It's just that the IT placement firm charges more to the employer for the service. The benefit is the employer doesn't have to pay me any benefits so they come out ahead.

Thanks for the well thoughts! They knew I wasn't in with the vendor but it was my own damn fault for not doing my job properly. I filed online for unemployment meant so its just a waiting game right now. I really hope I don't go back into retail again, I suffer long enough and seen what it does to the older crowd that stick to it for their entire careers.

been unemployed for a year now, so i went back to school and got accepted to a radiology tech program, thing is, it doesnt start till january of next year, so now i have nothing to do till then. been looking for a job, damn its bad out there. thinking of going to best buy or gamestop. any advice?

Best buy doesn't work on commission so I would say go with Gamestop. You get to check out games and they give you a paycheck on a debit card so you don't even have to worry about opening up a bank account. As long as you can alphabetize and upsell then I don't see you having a problem getting a job there. The only down side is that you have to go home at the end of your shift and leave all those cool games behind.

I'm going into the last year of my BA in Architecture at Washington State University (gocougs), turning 21 in two weeks and I've never really had a steady job.

Any work I've done has been very short duration, at most one month doing random jobs. While at school I work at a front desk for a residence hall, and that pays okay but all-in-all, i'm pretty broke and starting to feel the pressure of the job hunt.

Living off my parents for the summer, got no car and no cash, and am pre-emptively lamenting how lame my 21st birthday will be

Hmm...after reading the posts here, is there some sort of "Help GAFers find a job" thread? I know one of the things that has helped myself and others with finding jobs is through word of mouth. Websites and job fairs are all well and good, but sometimes all it takes is just knowing the right person at the right time.

So does anyone think a thread where unemployed GAFers post their qualifications and locality and then other GAFers possibly help them out would be beneficial? Obviously nothing is guaranteed, but if at least one person gets a job out of it, it could be a success.

Is it generally considered a good thing if someone responds to your application quickly? I had an interview for a job in New York last week and was emailed for it 3 days after I sent my resume, etc. Trying not to psych myself out about it but I've been lucky to hear anything at all, and if I do it usually takes a couple weeks.

So my mom was unemployed for 2 years.
Then she got a job for the government for 4 months.
And now shes unemployed again and back on benefits but hopefully something will happen soon because the market in other areas is starting to open up a little more (academics, industry).

Na dude, don't even worry. Heaps of people go through design school without working a pt job or anything, and don't worry about a job hunt. You're 21, I'm sure your folks wouldn't mind putting up with you and helping out a bit longer whilst you look for work, I mean, you did just graduate afterall.

21st bday on the other hand, it's what you make of it. A big 21st doesn't mean its going to be better.

Depends on the company. If they need people ASAP, they'll push through applications a lot faster, which is a good thing, nothing worse than waiting, and waiting and waiting.

And hey, even if it doesn't workout, it gives you more time to begin looking for more because they made it a speedy process.

I've never heard of this before. They give you paychecks on prepaid debit? Seems more like a negative than a positive.

I went to the "second interview" at the warehouse job. The took a group of us on a tour of the place and showed us the good, the bad and the ugly of it all. Then we had to fill out a bunch of tests about the walk through. Then we had to fill out a bunch of information on a computer. A couple of people flat out left after the tour, saying it wasn't for them.

The end result, I got the job. It does not start for a few weeks so in the meantime I have an interview at an office my friend works at for an "gopher" type position. Answering phones, getting lunch, for the workers, ect. I don't know how this one pays, so it's going to be a choice between less pay/less work or more pay/hard work.

I had an interview a couple weeks ago with a place I really wanted to work, but they told the recruiter who got me the interview that they had decided not to move forward with me as a candidate. I thought I nailed the interview, but they had also expressed some concerns during the interview that I was overqualified.

Monday afternoon they called the recruiter again and asked to have me back in for a second interview. They had created a new, higher-ranking position after landing a major contract and wanted me to come in and "meet the team" to make sure I was a good fit. I think that went well, and I am hoping my four month period of unemployment is coming to an end.

It has been my experience that the places that contact you right away are usually shitty places to work. YMMV.

It's the biggest pile of shit ever, you get charged a fee for looking at the card. Even checking the card balance at an atm can cost you 5$. If you work there, sign up for direct deposit ASAP.

Yeah, I was wondering more if it means they were really interested in me specifically because they wanted to get me in for an interview and get an offer out before I theoretically took something else (optimistic thinking, heh).

What makes you say that? This job is actually pretty much everything I'm looking for, and it's at a great company.

It definitely could, man! Keep the optimistic thinking going, no point in being negative. Good luck with it.

I'm another member of "Unemployed-GAF". I have finished my studies on "Industrial Engineering" (5 year degree) and did my final year project (similar to a master thesis) on Sheffield. I don't have any subjects left, but I can't really get my degree because they haven't given me a mark from the project yet (And it was finished 6 months ago).

Anyway, I've been looking for a job since february, with more intensity since may, and still nothing. I got an interview for a consulting firm (Accenture) and another one for a "last year student job" in a car supply company, but they've rejected me.

I've sent probably hundreds of resumees out there, but largely at random. My GF did well at an interview for a job in another city, and they said her that wen she gets the official degree they'll accept her somewhere.

Still, it's not that bad if you consider I live in Spain, but I hope I get some job on Madrid or an amazing job near my city in September-October. If not, I'll probably go to study some Master or whatever.

By the way GAF, in other countries, how much money companies pay for a last year student working full time? Here it goes from only 300 to 600€ a month, but right now, I would be glad for it for some time.

It can be a sign of desperation on the company's part, which could be a sign of high turnover, which could be a sign of shitty work conditions.

Just finished a phone interview to assess my technical knowledge about database programming and analysis. Nailed nearly every single SQL question they threw at me and was told that I am "quite knowledgeable for someone fresh out of college." This is my second time being interviewed by this particular company in about 2 months, the first of which was an on-site all-day affair. Apparently I only just missed the cut the first time around but they decided to get in touch with me for a second shot when new positions opened up. Fingers crossed.

I can honestly say that I've enjoyed working nothing but manual labor for the past 10 years more than I expected to but goddamn would it give me such a sense of closure to finally land a career in the field I've studied for, especially after losing my scholarships halfway, having to change schools, and taking a year off in the interim to work full time and help pay for it all. I've barely had enough work time to pay the bills as of late as it is; the manufacturing sector is still reeling and we haven't had much to do at the shop lately.

Another week, another string of "you're not good enough" rejections. This is just pointless now and I should move back to NY.

Yeah, I know how that rejection game feels. I've been out of work for 4 1/2 months now, spent the last 6 weeks really applying to about 30 or so jobs. Only ever heard from two, those didn't pan out. Had an interview last Friday that seemingly went very well, that was the impression I got from both sides.

Though I sense they worry I might be bored or unsatisfied based on the title of the job being below what I am, though I tried to tell them the title doesn't mean so much to me as does the opportunity, job responsibilities and pay(which I didn't bring up during the interview). So we'll see what happens.

Haven't been following, Hota, where are you living now?

Keep your chin up, things are going to get better!

My income has dropped a ton from last year, so I have gotten crazy enough to do freelance writing and Mechanical Turk on downtime to make a couple extra bucks per hour!

Im a dude from Serbia, and you cant get good jobs here, unless you are criminal, cause they are kinda of legal here.

got myself a Job in Dubai, for a high profit company, based on a friend that works for them (referencer) CV, pictures and extensive mail response, but they kinda of blackmailed me - I have to learn Arabic fluently in another 6 months. and boy is it hard to learn that language.

Im using Rosetta Stone, and I hope that it meets the price. so far so good, but there are some weird stuff in that language.

they have - singular, "dual" and a plural of nouns. very confusing

Moved to Seattle last year for school, but dropped out. Now I'm at a different school (my first semester just started yesterday) and already want to quit again because 15 years out of HS has me feeling like the old dog who can't learn any new tricks nor can I remember how to do the old tricks. On top of it, finding myself unable to get the most basic of employment is degrading and depressing. I've only ever been The Guy Who Works At The Mall and that's probably all I'm capable of being, but the city seems unwilling to let me do even that.
