anyone else unemployed?

I've been unemployed for a while now. Al my extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) have been giving me shit about it all the time. It's not like they're really even there for me and they're giving me these lectures, which really pisses me off. It's not like I'm not trying, I worked at a restaurant for about a month, before a change in management and got laid off. I know they mean well, but sometimes I feel like I just want to snap and tell them to mind their own business.

It's the biggest pile of shit ever, you get charged a fee for looking at the card. Even checking the card balance at an atm can cost you 5$. If you work there, sign up for direct deposit ASAP.

Huh, at Walmart I get my paycheck sent to a Walmart debit card and it seems to work well. I can withdraw up to 10k from CS a day for free and can use the atm once every 2 weeks for no charge but I never use it anyway. And the funds go on it automatically. It seems very convenient.

Do they give you a checkbook? How do you transfer to a savings or investment account? What about paying bills? Just seems bizarre to me.

Well I am just doing it for a summer job for college so I am not really worrying about that. I see where you are coming from though. I mean you can always pull it off the card and add it to your savings account by bringing it the bank right?

My company offers debit cards as well if you don't have direct deposit. You would pay your bills just like any other person with no banking account. That's the only real reason to avoid direct deposit unless you're trying to hide cash.

I saw a friend from the university whom I lost touch with after we graduated working as a cashier at the supermarket. Feels bad man, my morale was already low but it's like getting kicked while you're down. I didn't even say hi to him because I felt like complete shit. I mean what were we going to talk about, "hey our degrees turned out to be completely worthless lol". I'm having a lot of trouble staying sober trying to cope with it.

So I haven't been posting in here because I don't want to lose focus on my job search, but I've been a part of unemployed-GAF for about 4 months and was wondering if anyone had some advice in my situation.

In the last 24 hours, I've gotten 2 job offers, one (project management) for half what I was making, the other (bus dev) a few thousand more than half. I simply can't afford to take the project management job at the current offer, but it's supposed to go up after a probationary period, and as projects are completed, I would get residuals that should take me above what I was previously making (I've got an email in to try to get some more specifics.) The bus dev position just barely works economically (by $13/month), is in the direction I want to go professionally, but the work environment seems toxic (the owner was regaling me with stories of people he had to fire and is a micromanager in denial, last person in this position left after 3 weeks.)

Help me decide unemployed-GAF-kenobi, you're my only hope!

TL;DR -

Offer #1 - Bad pay, might get better, stuck in a rut.
Offer #2 - Not good pay, professional development, work environment sucks.

Why not just take it and keep looking for another job? It's just business, and it will pad your resume so there isn't a blank spot in there.

I'd take #1 and still look for a job. Get the pay raise detail ironed out before you start.

Anyone ever has success finding a job through those large application systems that big companies use? I've applied to a few, and it always feels like it's being sent into deep space, never to be heard from again.

It is, which is why you need to network.

THIS is the shit that gets to me the most. Its more aggravating than actually helpful.

Forgot to ask, but are you asian? Cause I'm asian, and my folks will just not stop asking me about whether applied for Boeing (i already did). It aggravates me so much that I just don't pick up the phone when they call.

I start working tomorrow. Been unemployed slightly over a year. Keep looking and don't let it get you down. I'm gonna miss all the free time I had.

Not sure how I feel about my job after a month, the pay isn't great and I was paid minimum wage for training, just got my 2nd pay check and it was still that... they said they'll fix it. Still nothing after a week. The job is just really annoying in general. The owner can be a dick at times and really nice other times. The times he's a dick is when I don't finish something or he forgets something I told him. It's not me being lazy but taking 20-40 calls a day while trying to make appointments for them, while contacting the service men, organizing files, and doing their computer work/emails on top of that mostly by myself can be a bitch..The last guy walked out on them too, sorta seeing why now.

Yep. It's how I got my job.

Even if it sucks ass, at least you're getting paid. If you're going to quit then at least line up another job first.

Thanks for the advice guys. I went with #1 (bad pay, might get better, stuck in a rut.) They matched the other offer and detailed the residuals (now I'm wondering what the catch is because it sounds too good to be true.) Started yesterday (July 5th,) and around 4p, I got call back for an interview on another resume I sent out. I went ahead and set up the interview because there's a slight chance this #3 option might be substantially better.

I wish I had some sage advice for everyone, but all I can say is that this rash of activity and offers came right after I kicked myself in the ass and dramatically upped the number of resumes I was sending out. Good luck guys!

Had an interview today at an office a friend works at. They interviewed people "speed dating" style, so me and 3 other people got 20 minute interviews.

It went really well, they mentioned when I left that they would probably call soon (it was implied to be today or tomorrow) to have me come in to "try out" for an hour or so.

When I applied, I was encouraged to follow the owner on twitter. He tweeted today about having two great candidates for the temp pt position and not knowing what to do.

Now I'm just waiting. The warehouse job I interviewed for and got starts July 18. It's permanent and a lot more $. It's also 3rd shift. This is not really permanent and less $, but way better hours (m-f 9am - 5pm). Not sure what to do.

It might be that some companies were waiting until after the 4th of July to start hiring. My bro's phone was ringing non-stop on Tues with interviews/offers.

So right now I'm working for a guy who likes to make patents and I basically research and design whatever original idea the guy comes up with. I have no schooling, which is funny but you know.

I am on my last project and it's not that difficult so I will be unemployed soon. I like the work a lot and I doubt that I can get a job in a similar field like this without a degree, so that means that I gotta go to school. Just thinking about going back to a job like wal-mart or working as grunt in manufacturing again frightens me. I gotta get into school.

Well I got a full time job and I start Monday, I work 9 hour days mon-thur and get a half day on friday. It's going to be nice to get a solid paycheck every week and benefits again. I feel for all of the you in shitty part time jobs, the past two years for me has been hell and it's just so refreshing to have a solid schedule every week.. even if I have to get up at 4:45am every day. Plus I now have a little gig on Saturdays until the end of October, so I'll be working 6 days a week for the next four months.

Went to an interview today for what I thought was supposed to be a customer service-related job (targeted "for students!" in the Craigslist ad) but turned out to be one of those wretched door-to-door Ginsu knife gigs. I knew the listing seemed entirely too vague in details... *sigh*

Has anyone ever gone back to a place that rejected you after an interview to ask why? I got a postcard from Barnes & Noble the other day saying they didn't feel my experience fit the job I interview for despite me being more qualified for this than practically anything else: it was a position I did for 7 years in another bookstore and, frankly, I was fucking great at it. I'm genuinely pissed and frustrated over them so casually dismissing me when I could unquestionably working there right now and doing a better job than whoever they hired, and am feeling like going down there to (calmly) ask for some reasoning behind their decision.

Going there and asking them why they didn't hire you is about the biggest mistake you can make. Sit down, re-tool your resume, and then try again in 4 - 6 months or so if they have an opening at that time. You don't want to burn your bridges and ask for an explanation, because they'll either give you no answer at all, or just some generic answer and make sure that you won't ever have a chance to get hired there, period.

Maybe they thought you had too much experience?

I've been looking for a minimum wage job for a little over a month now. I was getting a little depressed being shot down so many times. I followed up with so many managers just to be told "no". I can still see some of their smug faces.

However, things totally started looking up for me. I'm fortunate enough to have some connections and I'm friends with a co-manager of Starbucks. She talked me up to the manager and I sent in an application. I followed up and scored myself an interview and made a pretty good first impression. I had the interview today and it went great! It was an hour and 20 minutes long but that's because I was able to make the interview very light hearted. She said I did a good job and was even talking about possibilities of becoming a shift-manager :O. I walked away feeling as though I landed the job. So happy right now but I don't want to celebrate just yet until I find out for sure :D

This makes me want to put my head through the wall. Too little or too much(?!) experience, I can't win either way. Something about me just makes employers run screaming as if I had the plague.

And they deserve it. Fuck em if they're gonna be rude about it.

Funny how it usually comes from people who've never really lost a job, too.

the one thing employers fear about too much experience is that they're afraid once the economy recovers you'll immediately leave.

perhaps you can say if ureally want the job, that u'd be willing to sign a 1-2 year contract.

I've been "employed" over at best buy for over three weeks now with no solid orientation date in sight. Lucky though I haven't stopped applying even a day after I was given the position. Just finished with an interview for an accounting position over at my college. I felt like it went really well, seemed to fit right in, but as you would imagine the only question during the interview relating to Accounting I bombed. I should have keep up with with the technical terms during summer. Luckily I have a friend who works in the group of 6 employees who put a good word in for me. Any idea if having a guy on the inside helps at all for getting a job?

I'm technically employed as a data entry clerk, but on a casual basis. Since the company hasn't had any big projects recently, I've had no reason to work, so I consider myself unemployed.

I'm close to finishing my bachelor's degree, I just need to complete two more units and a professional practicum. I'm studying computer science with majors in web technologies and marketing. I really have no idea where to go from here.

Freelance web and graphic design got me nowhere and there are so few studios here in Perth.

I quit my current job last month and am doing my last month here. I already got another job as a consultant testing engineer but the drive I'll have to do each day will probably annoy the hell out of me (bad drivers piss me off).

But after reading people's story on here about how they can't even find a job and are really willing to work, I feel like I shouldn't bitch to much about my own 'problem'.

It angers me that there are people on here that can't find a job and are struggling whilst we have these free riders over here just taking advantage of the system by not even trying to get a job but still receiving a shitload of welfare.

Welcome to Belgium I guess...

I'm running into this too. The main problem for me is that I made too much $ at my last job and most places can hire someone straight out of college or even in college still for peanuts.

I'm from Belgium too. It's really fucking aggravating to see certain parts of the population just sit on their ass and collect the money we're earning for them. The system should definitely be stricter here.

Hey all.

I am also unemployed for the moment. Was a student till May, fucked up with my Bachelors paper, so now i have to turn it in either in December or April. While i was in the University i was studying for a bachelors degree in Tourist guiding, and was working in a company that is a tourism service provider in years 2 and 3 while in university. The job mainly consisted of me driving a electric 6 person golf cart around my beautifull city Latvia, Sigulda to be exact, and giving informative sight seeing tours to tourists and clients. Work was for two years from May till late October. We have a trend in Latvia that people come here in autumn when the leaves fall from the trees. And about the job, i aplied to it as a job, only then as a practice work, otherwise you dont get paid as a student. And the most i ever made even working 20 days a month, that is 8 hours whether it rains or what not, 8 hours of traffic, collecting money and making sure the electric mobile isnt damaged, me and my clients are safe aswell, within those two seasons the most i ever made in sallary was about 120 Lats or 240 Dollars.... And dont take me wrong i did my job with dignity and respect, i wasnt bitter after the first few months, and i didnt really have a choice as it was practice work for the University anyway. So long story short, worked for the two seasons without ever fucking up. Still the most i ever saw per month was those 240 dollars, although i was always polite and answered every question, tips were very few. Luckily i am still and was then living with my parents. But with that money i could pour diesel in my car for maximum 2 weeks. So now, im out of Uni mostly, told the job to sod off. Wont be slaving anymore. As of now i have got possiblities luckily. I have a good chance to get a job in Switzerland, living paid(flat), one meal per day paid, 1200 + euro sallary, doing government work for a private company catalogging stuff into a database like an archive. So if i get that job im packing all the stuff i got in my van and im driving off. That might seem like a small salary for some. I have had people from Norway publicly laugh about it. Saying they can barely make it with 3400 Euros a month, even with 2 people earning in the family with no kids. But they dont understand my position coming from a overpriced piss poor country that Latvia is. If the work place in Switzerland doesnt go through. Then im still packing up my van and driving to UK. Will crash with my WoW buddy ex Guild master and will look for a job there. As i simply see no future here. Hoping to get a job in UK then if what. Luckily i have options i know 4 languages and i have work experience and a personal car aswell. Sigh wish me luck Gaf. And all the best of luck to the other Unemployed gaffers out there ! Stay strong!

Did you do the exact same job for 7 years? No promotions?

I can imagine why that would make a company nervous. Is there something wrong with the person's work or do they just lack ambition?

I was laid off last month due to a lack of work. I was a CAD technician at a civil engineering firm. Our industry has been hit hard lately since politicians on both sides are positioning themselves for 2012 elections.

No one wants to greenlight any projects that their opponent can use against them to claim is wasteful spending. For example, the government allocates funding for projects every year and states apply for their share of "free money". Except now, those projects don't move forward because opponents say the costs to maintain these new roads/bridges/etc are too high (it's not, and even if it was, it's 10-15 years into the future, etc)

Anyways, I've been taking classes online (1 or 2 every semester) until this happened, so I've decided to go back to school full time to finish my degree. With my GPA and financial need, I have a good chance at some grants, but I hope to get some work study, which could help networking wise.

Theoretically, I can finish it in a semester or two, and with any luck, land a job in GIS, which could effectively double my previous salary. I know the department has a ton of leads on GIS jobs, but I never applied to them since I already had a job.
