I have an interview on Tues.!

Any tips on what I should know about the company? Just their general mission statement/values or is that not enough?

I lucked out with previous jobs since they never asked this question in the interview.

Know your SARs.

Situation
Action
Result

Get at least 5 or 6 stories into your head of stories from a previous employer. Interviews nowadays are behavioral based meaning HR is going to want to see that your experiences back up what you say on your resume.

So know your SARs.

The Situation was this I blah blah blah at my last company.
The Action that I took in this Situation was to blah blah blah
The Result of my Actions was blah blah blah

Trust me SARs all the way. Once you get the hang of it you can insert a generic SARs to answer almost any interview question.

I think I've held out from posting here before, but here I am now. I was let go at the end of March out of a game company (you may find out who if you do some digging, but it didn't trend anywhere as newsworthy). So for the past few months I've been brushing up on some skills and trying out some iOS development.

My question to you all: what do I end up categorizing this "period" in my resume/linkedin profile? Do I "put in a job title", along with projects completed? Or just leave it out, and make a note of this "learning/training" period as something else?

It think it could be acceptable to put this under "Continuing education." You would follow that by saying something to the effect... Personal research of iOS development, including blah blah, as well blah. Resulting in my production/development/whatever as long as you convey something done.

When you get called out or asked during an interview, you dovetail this into any direction you want, while showing that you were learning and productive during your free time.

Just got the news that I'll be laid off within the next 7 weeks. The company I work for is restructuring and my location didn't make the cut. can't say Im shocked considering print is slowly going extinct and the company went bankrupt and was bought out twice in the last three years. still it sucks knowing I'll have no job with economic apocalypse 2.0 looming.

Also sucks that hours will be cut back over the remaining weeks. Going to be some shitty checks until I get my severance which should be decent after 9 years.

not sure what I'm going to do. Maybe back to school or maybe invest in knee pads and mouth wash. :(

Oh I have no worries about explaining it in interviews and such. I can easily show of what I had. It's just that when I'm putting a resume package together, missing months seems, odd.

Well, most people are missing months... and that's why you are there. In any case, it seems like everyone has a history of being laid off nowadays. Just make the "free time" look productive.

my father inlaw got layed off as a supervisor at a military fuel depot as well as 15 others (mostly management) because they have either bad credit or too much pending on their credit. The situation baffles me. I mean, its a government job. My father inlaw is retired Navy (22 years) and has worked at the Fuel Depot for 12 years, starting from the lowest position available to last year getting his Supervisor job. Like he says "its bullshit i get layed off because i bust my ass every week and sometimes weekends so my kids can go to college and we can live happy and stress free".

Is the concern that people with bad/poor credit in sensitive jobs might be more susceptible to bribery/blackmail?

I'll be joining this thread before long fellas. The company I work for announced they were moving our operation half way across the country. It's a good labor job. About $45k/yr with very good insurance and 401k contributions (15% of your annual salary).

I've got student loans in default. I'm also in the over/under qualified position. Everything in my field of study requires experience. Employers know there are people in my field of work who are looking for a job and will accept entry level pay. So that leaves new graduates like myself out in the cold. I've been on all the recruiting websites for over a year without even a nibble.

They're working us like crazy because they have a pretty good severance package hanging over our heads to keep us from quitting. We're only doing around 40% of the volume we were last year (the new factory is already running production, I think we're just getting what they can't handle in a 5 day week).

So they have us in there working 11 to 12 hour days 3 days a week instead of spreading it over a 5 day work week. Personally I'd rather have 5 easy days instead of 3 hell days. Some people are happy with the long weekends. I dunno. Tensions are high. People are fighting all over the factory. Some verbal fights, some fist fights. Just a bad place to be.

Oh, and I've got 4 kids.

How old are you?

If you're 22-25 with 4 kids, goddam you have it rough right now.

Good luck bro.

Bahahaha @ Groupon job posting. Sounds like the hiring manager is cool.

Requirements:

• Two or more years of extensive online-advertising sales to local merchants in Los Angeles
• Experience canvassing and cold calling various types of local businesses, with evidence of consistent and current success
• Experience working from home or other virtual office is strongly preferred, especially if the office is equipped with virtual reality or lasers

I'm unemployed. I've been going to Boise State for the last two years, but the GI bill doesn't pay enough to actually live on. So! I'm looking for a regular job.

A special Fuck You goes out to T-Mobile, who sent me a rejection e-mail before I even fully completed their application process.

Would you rather them waiting til you went through the entire process even though they knew from the outset they weren't going to hire you? Sounds like they were being respectful of your time and energy.

Hey folks, just wanted to recommend the company I work for: Acxiom Corporation. I've worked there 12 years and I really like it. We're currently hiring for all kinds of positions, and have offices scattered across the globe (headquarters in Arkansas, where I live). If you are a skilled IT person a lot of the times you can work remote. I have Database Administrators on my team scattered across 4 states and 2 countries (in fact no one I work with lives where I do).

We have a lot of new business coming in, so check us out if you are remotely interested in IT jobs.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd like to think that hiring decisions should be made by humans, not computers.

Well you didn't give a lot of details. Maybe there was some way that 100% disqualified you for that position based on what you put in.

Just saw on the news that they might be cutting about 3700 postal service offices. Boys it will just get tougher from now on.

Got an interview for an internship, its unpaid, but hopefully if I get, I won't be sitting on my ass for while.

Just got hired as a pharmacy technician at the local CVS. I've been out of work for about a year so anything is better than nothing at this point. I'm assuming I'm going to start my training period next week. So does anyone have any experience in this field?

I was unemployed since the start of the year. Been following this thread whenever it's been bumped since then. Things have been really bleak at times.

If there is some divine power out there they finally had mercy as I just got offered a new job today . It's my dream job too, that I've wanted 5 years since finishing University (but have had to make do working retail 'til now). My point is (like others have said), NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS! Best of luck to everyone in this thread, I'm rooting for you all.

Gaf, I'm unemployed and have been told this is the place to come. I am 21 and live in western MA with a hard working father and a mother who is also unemployed. My father just recently took the last loan he could as it was his only option. This loan may last us through the winter, but after that, should things stay this way, we'll be homeless. Everyday I search craigslist for available jobs but being as I could never afford college my options are limited and I don't have much hope. My father is also looking for work but it's equally as hard due to age and time taken up by his fulltime job(which is rumored to be running another round of layoffs). Is there anything I can do to stop things? I looked into the emergency homeowner loan but we weren't eligible as we paid the mortgage the last three months.

Can you get some training for trade works like plumbing, electrical or mechanical works?

Also to those who don't have any dependents, don't be afraid to broaden your horizon, look for works in other countries

So i just had my second interview for a retail stock position. i pretty much have the job. Its only 15-20 hours per week but thats about 240 times better than no hours per week lol. The job pays just above minimum wage but im fine with that. All i need to do now is pass a drug screen and a criminal background check tomorrow and its "welcome aboard." i havent smoked in weeks and i drink gallons of water a day and exercise in the triple digit heat so hopefully the drug test should be fine. Earlier i picked up one of those home sample kits from Walgreens and there is a container of piss counting down with the results. Looks good so far but i need to wait until the timer is up.

Woot.

edit: ive been working at least one job continuously since 1992 up until July 2008. Its taken me almost 3 years to the day of constant searching to get employment. FFS i cannot wait.

It's been a full week since I had a really good interview last week. They said it would be a long hiring process (as in, a couple more interviews. This was the second), but I haven't heard anything back from them.

Should I email asking about the status of the position? Or wait?

Just a tip for the waiting, you actually know you have a job already when you leave the interview, if its not apparent you got the job you didn't get it.

It doesn't hurt to follow up. Once a week is my personal policy.

Ha. This is definitely not the case. You never know who is interviewing after you. I thought this way once before. Didn't get the job.

I guess, what I mean to say is, if you are unsure of if they will pick you after the interview don't feel bad. It could still be you... or not. Someone with a master's degree that has their father working at the company could get it too.

Not the case at all. Maybe in government jobs, where the interview process is just a formality, but I've heard plenty of stories from friends unsure of whether or not they got the job after an interview.

Always, always email them after a week. It can't hurt you to look eager.

I emailed, and got a quick reply saying they're nearing the end of the decision making process. And they even made a note of appreciating my interest. Woot

I'm going to skip some obvious questions this post brings up so that I don't dilute this message: Stop wasting your time on craigslist. It was the single biggest waste of time in my recent job search, there is just so much scammy crap on there. I suspect that out of the 3-4 craigslist "jobs" I did apply for, I'd be lucky if even one them was a legitimate job.

Hey GAF,
I've joined the ranks of the unemployed because of a very complicated situation. Just have enough money for one month's rent and food left. I've never had a proper job before but I've volunteered with an NGO for 5 years. Could anyone give me any tips on searching for student jobs? There was this one website but every job on it was crap.
I've asked in stores but most say to goto their websites.
I live in newcastle.

Thank you in advance

In the software section they have to pay to post jobs, so spam isn't too much of a concern there. That's how I found the job I'm starting on Monday.

Nah, craigslist is fine to use. You just have to be smart and realize there are people out there who want to scam you. Avoid any company lying about "Unlimited Income Potential" and never pay for any training/classes before you can start working at a company. A legit company will pay for your training.

I've had some good responses & interviews throught craigslist. Sure, I haven't landed a job through craigslist yet, but that isn't because those jobs were scams.

been pretty stuck the last year since leaving college.

get little bits of work and jobs now and again but all still a nice steady job even a shitty one in a shop would be great. Feel like I have applied everywhere with no look.

Gonna give my CV a good going over. Anyone know of any good places to get templates. My current CV is a bit ghetto looking so having something good looking to work from would probably be good.

I've been in IT almost ten years now and I can feel everybody's pain. I had to do warehouse work for almost a year when I lost my last job, but I eventually landed something. Keep your head up at all times, especially if you have people depending on you.

I almost joined the military at one point. Has anybody else thought of that as a last resort? It may not be ideal, but you can get a career going that way and government benefits are nice.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not really sure where to go besides craigslist for jobs. Luckily I've recently received a few call backs. We'll see where things go. I just hope I can get over my anxiety now...

if someone of you lives in Germany or is a citizen of the European Union and can speak German. my company is hiring engineers at the moment.

Yeah, at least in my own experience, applying through Craigslist has been a worthless endeavor. I've sent well over a hundred resumes in response to various postings and never heard back from a single one. There have no doubt been more than a few scams in there, but it's especially tedious because there's rarely any way of getting in touch with them afterwards for a follow-up, so I always felt like I was just tossing those applications out into the ether for no good reason.

And adding to my rejection pile, big fat "go fuck yourself" replies this week from H&M, Nordstrom, and three Starbucks...

Dammit. I thought I majorly lucked out on the job search. Had an interview with a well-known company right out of college (graduated in May, interview was in June). Crushed the panel interview, all four of the panelists loved me, and they were definitely going to hire me.

But then the higherups decided to put a freeze on all new hiring for the next 2-3 months, so now I'm jobless. Going through the usual paces of trying employment agencies/staffing services just to get some kind of income to survive.

Do you guys think I'm down for the count on the original job, or should I keep following up every month or so just to keep my name in the running for when the hiring freeze is lifted? It's not a dream job by any means, but it's a great first "real job" and it pays well (around $55k a year). I really, really want it.

Good on you :D I hope it works out. (Plus, according to the other thread you will be able to get a better job now that you have a job).

I applied for a paid internship over the winter that looks awesome. Only, its in Japan. Its looking like the only way I'm going to be able to afford to go is if I get a job before hand -_- I was pretty confident I was going to get some casual work for August selling showbags at a festival. But I haven't received a call yet, while some other people I know did. Who knows why...

I have an appointment tomorrow at ESC for REA Training or some such.

Hope it goes well. Classes start in 2 weeks.

Anyone had any experience with attending school while filing for unemployment?

The phone interview last Wednesday went well and I have an in person interview tomorrow! I'm beyond excited and nervous at the same time.

well yeah. Actually they told him exactly what it was, Hell they told everyone that got layed off what it was specifically.

For my father inlaw it was a unpaid balance of $100 for home owner association fees that apparently werent paid for so the Attorney who handles the funds put a lien on his home. But my father inlaw has a carbon copy of the check he wrote for that $100, Attorney said this past week thats hes sorry he lost the job and that he prolly lost the check.

WTF?!?!?!?!

Another guy got layed off because he had a $90 unpaid library fee.

I've been unemployed since March after voluntarily leaving my last position so I could relocate back to Indy from Tennessee. I have an interview tomorrow morning with two hiring managers at a large brokerage for a broker trainee position, and I feel pretty good about it. So far, I have had:

-Pre-screening assessment (online personality test, 30 minutes)
-Phone interview (~15 min)
-Phone interview (one hour)
-Pre-screening assessment (on-site math and logic test, 90 minutes)

If the hiring managers like me tomorrow, I have to undergo a background check. If that checks out, I believe that is my last hurdle to getting this job. I am starting my MBA in a few weeks, and I'm really excited about having a chance to get my foot in the door of the finance industry. With the way things have gone so far (recruiter likes me, I rocked the test I took last week, I was referred by a current employee), I have high hopes for this gig. Because of that, if I don't get it I will probably be super sad for a few days. Ugh.

Yes, for like 8 years too. Don't even ask how I managed this long without one. I wonder if I can even do one being out of work so long.

God, went into an interview with a temp agency who are hiring for the fall.

"You're overqualified for most of our jobs...and underqualified for all the jobs in your field. You're either going to have to ask for LESS MONEY or get certified for SQL. You realize you're competing with people who have Master's degrees, right?"

She thought $10 an hour is too high of a wage to be realistically asking for these days if you're not a college graduate or certified.
