anyone else unemployed?

Found a job. I've worked two days so far. It's at a private school as a dishwasher. I get $10.00 an hour plus benefits. I'm also not capped as far how many hours I can work. Plus they've already stated there will be a time when they let me cook. In addition to this, my other job, which I absolutely love, is now going to be offering me additional hours. Things are starting to finally look up after I sent well over a hundred e-mails and nearly became penniless and homeless.

So after over two weeks since i took the employment drug screen i received a call that im to report to orientation this week. Feels so good to have a job again. Its been nearly three years since my previous employer went belly-up.

This job is only 20 hours a week to start but thats fine by me. Part-time is better than no-time. There is also a decent chance that i will get more hours in the coming months as the ramp up for the holidays begins.

I just got a job this week and my first interview with the hiring manager went very poorly in terms of my knowledge. However, after those questions were out of the way, we had a good talk and I surprisingly got another phone interview. From there, I did well on the technical questions and etc... got an in-person and did well there. Now I have a job with them. :)

So here's the way I see the whole "what are they looking for" question. The answer is it depends (i know nobody asked me :) ). I've had phone interviews where I nailed the technical questions but I guess just flubbed or talked more than I should have. For those, I didn't get to move on.

However, I had another phone interview that was strictly a list of computer science questions and I got like 14/15 right. It was with the VP of Tivo actually and he told me that they'd be bringing me in after we were through with the questions.

So for the job I recently got, there were actual major down times between each phase. There was a month between my tech interview and coming in for an in person interview. On the other hand, Tivo moved relatively fast. On another hand, jerk recruiters would just drop contact with me after tech phone interviews. So I'm just trying to say it's always gonna be different and there's probably nt point in even thinking about what the interviewer "wants" because it differs so much between everyone despite what those stupid "interviewing professionals" want you to believe.

I don't even think anyone has read my cover letter during my whole interviewing process at any company. I was consistently asked questions that were specifically answered in my cover letter. But them "how to get employed" articles love to stress how damn important the cover letter is. Now I'm not saying it isn't for certain positions and professions, but yeah I think it's a better idea to not listen to those sites and do what you feel is right (I'd still write cover letters despite my experience). Obviously in Computer Science and Engineering, people give less a crap about the formality and what not.

So if I have any advice for those still looking for a job... don't put too much stock into all these sites that provide you with information on the interview process. Likewise, for at least you computer science guys, don't spend too much time with those interview question samples. Through my whole process, I was once never asked anything remotely close to those questions.

- I'll be out soon after a 1 month contract. 2 weeks or so. I wasn't feeling the job anyway. My PM came back from holiday and kicked me off of my role and put me on support for this bitch made coder.

- I keep getting whored, by recruiters from everywhere, on my LinkedIn, so work isn't hard for me to find. It's actually getting off my ass to getting a position that I want, is the problem.

I've been employed over at Bestbuy for about two weeks now, but I've been offered a better position at my school. I've checked it out and overall it fits my life more at this time. How would I go about quitting from Bestbuy (they've treated me extremely well).

Thought seeing things from the other side of a small business might be interesting.
It boggles my mind how hard it is for people to find employment here. I go through a few staff owning a Cafe in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand and always have quite a bit of trouble finding staff worth hiring. They dont even need experience. All I ever look for is a person capable of holding a good conversation with me to see if they have the personality to work with customers and seem motivated. I have even tried finding people to work their way up to the point they can run the place and most people dont seem to have the motivation.
A lot of the people I get through appear to not even want the job and are just going through the motions. I have to go through the process again soon as one of my staff who has been with us for 6 years is pregnant and wanting a lifestyle change so she wont be coming back afterwards. Time to train the next general manager up. That means the lot from front of house to cooking. I think the waitress wants to do it so she will go up the ranks and we will train another for her job . Then as Christmas approaches and our busy season I will have to get a couple more trained up in front of house.
The crazy part is we go down to 6 days open and 3 staff for the off season. The hardest job to fill is the third full timer that is willing to stay long term. Thats the position I will try to fill by October/November. While it doesnt pay the best or anything its still a steady 40hr week income. In a nice place. Google image search Mount Maunganui. A lot of the foreign tourist short term staff we get tend to take their breaks on the beach or surfing when the weather is right through summer.

You're probably still training, correct? I would just let them know the situation and ask if they want you to work your two weeks out. Unless you store is extremely high traffic/volume, it's doubtful your presence will be missed this early on.

After thinking I bombed my phone interview with the marketing firm, they actually called me back today to schedule an in-person interview. Pretty nervous about this one. I'm definitely gonna have to do my homework.

And I got a job offer today actually to work full-time at a small electronics store (minimum wage, but I'll make commission on everything I sell). Coming from Best Buy myself, it's more of the same, but it seems like a much more relaxed environment AND I'll actually be motivated to sell. Decent fallback/"in the meantime" kind of job.

Also, holy fuck at the amount of door-to-door sales/pyramid scheme jobs out there. I remember laughing at my friends who fell for the CutCo knives scam back in high school, but it appears that those kind of companies have stepped up their game. I applied for two fairly promising entry level marketing jobs, both of which looked completely legit. Decent website (if a little too flashy - literally), very nice professional phone conversation to set up an interview, legit looking credentials on LinkedIn, asked me to actually bring multiple copies of my resume, etc.

Then I do some Googling and immediately find out the company is a complete and total sham. Basically they lie to you throughout the entire interview process, and then on your first day you find out your pay is 100% commission based and you're going to be driving all around town selling boxes of pens or some shit to random businesses. Ugh. I sent both places a "thanks but no thanks" email today (although part of me wanted to check them out due to sheer morbid curiosity).

After turning to my new job in the same field, I absolutely hate it! I'm tired of dealing with stupid people 9 hours a day and getting chewed out because I can't give them full retail for their beaten/destroyed games! /rant

Anyway, my military recruiter still wants me to join up with the Air Force. Problem is future wife doesn't want me to go at the beginning of the year after we get married in a month. I'm all sorts of stressed out and can't deal with being anywhere close to work now. GameStop was worse but this is right there with it.

Got my first job lead since my last job ended! They want me to answer some questions before possibly getting an interview, but it's still a bright spot for my day.

Finally found employment last month after looking for about 10 months prior. Not even full time hours, but it feels like a good company and there are a lot of opportunities to move to full time positions after a probation period.
Tell me in it's VoiceOver work/video editing.

After getting rejected for a volunteer position I'm not feeling very optimistic. Come November when my student loan payments start I might have to get a retail job. :\ Piece of shit diploma...

Good luck to you, but don't think landing even a retail job is easy lately.

After 2 long and brutal years finally got an interview lined up for Wednesday! Wish me luck gaf, and to all those still looking, don't stop trying, regardless of what you are thinking it's not impossible!

Woot!

The air force isn't a bad choice. Get a job that doesn't involve combat and you're pretty comfy. Expect to move locations regularly, though.

I did 6 years and once I decide to go back to college I've pretty much got a free bachelor's degree for me waiting, and I'm working full time as a civilian now. While I can't say I really enjoyed most of my time in, it definitely set me up for the cozy life I have now.

Is Snagajob working for anyone?

I'm starting to get into it, applying to a handful of places everyday. It worked for my friend but he actually has work exp unlike me (ALL my exp is in the art field so my resume looks crazy to non-art/ animation places :/)

I quit my job last month due to the deep hatred I had going to work every morning. I took July off to relax, and today I started a much better job (I actually had fun at work today!).

This sounds lush, I'm having to move back to my parents next month so no rent to pay. Am thinking of quitting my job, pay is terrible and jobs shit.

Yeah...I am also a student and I still live at home. I might be stupid in the way I act, but If I am not happy with something in my life (work in this instance), I will quit/look for an alternative or different path to go down almost immediately. In my opinion life is to short to waste time being miserable working a shit job.

Luckily my family is super supportive of whatever I want to do, so even if it pays shit I will never be homeless!

I just need a normal job. I just got out of HS, going to a community college. Would love to be a waiter/bus boy. So difficult to find a job.

A couple of my friends in college, and my 17 year old cousin got jobs at different Weis stores the past couple months. They seem to hire a ton of people and hire pretty quickly. They are also really flexible working around your class schedule. I think my friends/cousin are making about $8 an hour, and they have only been there a couple months. Might be worth looking into?

So I have a follow-up interview today, and I'm unsure about what to wear. Last week I wore a suit jacket, shirt, and pants for my initial interview. The problem I have is that at this point that's really the only shirt I have that fits and works with the suit jacket. Should I re-wear the same outfit I wore last week to keep the jacket on, or go jacket-less and wear a different, possibly short-sleeved button down shirt? For reference, everybody I met at the office last week was wearing long-sleeve button down shirts and slacks (no ties).

Holy shit, minimum wage jobs in the States ask for urine/drug tests? I've never heard of any job up here (Canada) asking for that, let alone single-digit/hour jobs.

I'm considering myself technically unemployed, even though I'm on set for about four days a week on this television production (fourth gig in as many months, which is good). This is the first one where at least some of my time contributed is paid, but it's not much. The next gig after this one should be fully paid, or they'll be officially using me. I've done nothing but great work so far for this company and one other in all my interning, so hopefully it gets recognized with a full-time contract position on the next show.

Best of luck to all!

I'm very tempted to pick up retail part time shifts to get the cash flow going again, but that also feels like such a huge step backward. I did retail part time for literally ten years (since I was 16, alongside high school and university). As much as I managed to enjoy it and have very few nightmare stories (unlike most retail experiences), I'm better than that now.

So, I have decided to accept a 10-week temporary position working to fill in for someone on maternity leave. The thing is, I have a possible full-time job offer coming in in the next month or so. Now, obviously I may not get the position, but on the chances that I am offered the full-time position, what is the etiquette for accepting it/leaving the temporary position early? I'd feel bad leaving the temporary job early, but at the same time if I'm offered a full-time position I feel like that's something I shouldn't pass up just to "be nice."

I hate to pull the "beggars can't be choosers" act right now, but I was officially offered the electronic store sales job today, and while I accepted (start next week), I'm starting to have major second thoughts about it.

Basically it's a local chain electronics store (only in TN, afaik) that has a fairly bad reputation. They don't even offer refunds, for starters. That's a huge red flag for me, and I can already picture having to deal with pissed off customers all the time. Second, I got hired extremely quickly and easily. My first "interview" wasn't even an interview -- more like a description of what I'd be doing. One of the first things the hiring manager told me was that the store has very little traffic throughout the week, and even less on the weekends, so he doesn't mind his employees watching television or texting. Which sounds alright, but I will be getting paid minimum wage, so unless I make a few sales each day I'm going to be in the poor house very quickly. And both times I was in there for my "interviews" (and today was at lunch time) I saw precisely two customers who entered and left without buying anything.

I don't even know if it's worth my time at this point.

Any job is better than no job right now.

If you are unemployed a job is better than no job. If you go into work with a positive attitude and are nice, caring and genuine to the customers you may make some sales and help throughput at the store.

My interview at the Yellow Leaf bakery went very, very well. Over an hour talking with the two owners, toured the place a bit, did some pastry bag shenanigans for them, etc. Trying not to get my hopes up considering how many times I've been disappointed this year, but it really felt good.

As a fellow industry newbie congrats on the employment! If I ever find myself up there I'll visit the place!

I don't know if it was stupid of me to leave my line cook position at Rivera but I'm hoping my interview with another fine dining restaurant will go well tomorrow.

I applied to a part-time position a few hours ago. The ad had a number, and when I called it the man who posted the ad wasn't available (he was on the phone to someone else)so I was given an email address to instead contact. I did so along with my CV (resume). I was told on the phone that he'd get back to me soon but it's been several hours now and I'm anxious just to find out whatever or not the position is still available as the ad was posted 3 weeks ago.

Not sure if I should ring back or ring tomorrow.

If any of you live in Louisiana my company is still looking for dispatchers for day/night and maybe even part time help. Dispatching isn't easy and its stressful as fuck but it is work and I kind of enjoy it.

Holy shit man, give it some time. A few hours, or even a couple days, isn't shit in the hiring process. Have some patience, as you'll need it.

Well the one who answered seemed to have been working the switchboard, or a receptionist. The ad I responded to said "call this number and ask to speak to XXX". XXX was not available, so the receptionist took my number and asked me to send an email. From experience, this often leads to nowhere. I should have just said I'll call back when XXX becomes available.

So I called again this morning and another person picked up. This I asked, generally, is this vacancy still open because it was posted several weeks ago? She responded "Well it's not been decided yet".

??? The ad is still up and its not been decided whether or not there is a position open? This is why I wish XXX picked up, but I'm not going to call again. It's just unfortunate. In the past, whenever I've spoken directly to the person behind the ad, I've been given direct information and an interview booked there and then. Now, I don't even know whether there is a position open or not let alone any more info on it.

FYI, its a small business on a high street. I could have probably walked in the store and spoken to XXX directly before all of this. But, alas.

Right there with you. I'm thinking about furthering my education to improve my resume... More debt I guess.

This sounds like they've already been seeing resumes/candidates, but they haven't found the perfect person yet. They may not fill the position at all.

The position was for admin/clerk. They specify the roles they require and the hours (very short). They state they need two people, but I told them I'm willing to take both shifts and I live close. I match all the requirements perfectly, but I'd appreciate either a Yes or No but doesn't seem like that's coming. Sucks because it would have been the perfect job for me. Because of that, I may ring them again next week and just ask to speak to XXX and only him. I need closure on this

Well to be honest I did get one reply. A rejection email from KFC. When filling it out, I was willing to work any day, 35 hours per week minimum. There were several vacancies open throughout the city and still are.

Lost my job on the 5th. Still dealing with the unemployment office. What a bunch of assholes. I ended up having to ask the woman that I dealt with today if I was keeping her from something because she pretty much had this "Fuck off and die" attitude. I realize these people have a lot to deal with since unemployment is so high, but would it kill them to actually pretend to be interested? I saw people in the office that didn't know how they were going to feed their children and one of the women behind the counter was complaining about having to stay 30 minutes late yesterday in order to get some claims processed.

I had two phone interviews recently. Both went well, but then...

The woman at the first employer mentioned the job was for contract work only. And that was fine, except the ad for the position made no mention of contract work.

And the second one just hasn't bothered to tell me I'm not invited for the second, in-person interview. I understand not replying to every Joe Sixpack who sends in a résumé, but I think if you take time out for a phone interview, you could at least send an e-mail note saying thank you, but we've decided to look elsewhere.

Well my work placement is over now, back to the unemployment line. (even though I was technically never employed).
I've just got into the routine of working full weeks again and now I hope I can avoid falling back into my old lazy habits that unemployment invites. Well I guess I should bring my CV up to date.
If you've been unemployed for a long time maybe consider trying to do some free work for a month or two, you'll get some more experience and hopefully you'll feel better about yourself.

Modern HR seems to take the view that unless you're a candidate still in the running, they could give a shit.

A couple years back when I was looking I actually got an e-mail telling me they had decided to go with somebody else seven months after I interviewed.

FUCK CALIFORNIA

The fucking piece of shit I work for falsified documents and presented write ups I was NEVER shown, but the fucking piece of shit state of California sided with him just because he's black and I'm white.

That sucks, both times i've done it I was able to get travel expenses paid for (though my money for last week got swiped in the post, good thing I hoarded up my benefits to counteract). My most recent travel expenses were £27 a week.

So you're a big fan of how conservative states take on race relations, what with the slavery, segregation and cops being able to pull over someone just for looking hispanic?
