So you're a big fan of how conservative states take on race relations, what with the slavery, segregation and cops being able to pull over someone just for looking hispanic?

No I just hate how the concept of equality is only valid if you're a "minority" in the state of California.

Does anyone know some legit teaching abroad programs? I' m beggining to give up on the idea that I'll be able to find employment anywhere. Been looking around for a decent program but a lot of them seem like scams.

officially unemployed. couple of weeks I've been getting paid from my job while on admin leave.

sigh

having art degree is tough too

So I applied today to this part-time for distributing newspapers to members of the public outside a train station. Decent pay and only a couple of hours a day. I get an email response within an minute and it turns out to be an automated email with a PDF application I must fill out.

Get this,

This form requires me to send in a copy of my National Insurance card, which for our non-UK members is sensitive data, details regarding my passport and/or birth certificate, next of kin contacts for 'emergencies' etc. Then I start to realise, woah hold on, I haven't even got the job, why do you need all of this private data to distribute newspapers outside a building for 3 hours?

Sent them an email asking this exact question but don't expect a response, nor do I care. If they gave me the job then I don't mind but I'm not giving them that information before hand as a random person on the net. It's utterly ridiculous that they'd want such a thing.

Totally agreed, I applied for a part-time job a few weeks ago (grocery store clerk) that wanted my Social Security number on the application. Why would any intelligent person reveal that information to somebody they didn't know? I don't think it shows good judgment to ask someone for sensitive information at the very beginning of the hiring process, so it's probably for the best that you don't work for those people.

Hired as a temp to stock a store that's going to open in a few days. Half of the people will be hired. Half work on the day and the other half on night. The store manager has had more time with the night people. Today everyone's together and the night crew is hella slacker-ish, but are buddy buddy with the store manager.

I think this is going to boil down to a popularity contest. There's no real way for them to judge people. You can't see what we are doing in between isles and we aren't logging what we are doing.

Haven't had any luck finding work after leaving uni, which is true of all my friends in the UK. (Some have gone abroad and done alright). Since a lot of my friends are having to unpaid internships or low-paying work at shops, I've decided to push on with doing what I love, which is trying to sell my novel. I don't have to pay rent since I moved back in with my mother, which is a big plus. I'm also working on my blog to build up my online profile for my CV and submission letters I send to publishers/agents.

They also wanted me to fill out a tax form. Trouble is, the pay they offered was far less than the minimum yearly income you must earn before being taxed for it. Just utterly incompetent.

FUCK THIS GOD DAMN PIECE OF SHIT LIBERAL STATE.

I now owe almost $3,000 that I don't have because I'm unemployed.
I feel your pain. IRS contacted me couple of months ago because a guy (asshole) i worked for as an independent contractor submitted my income report twice. I already paid like 3-4k in taxes very promptly and upfront but the IRS claimed i owed 7000 plus penalties because the employer falsified my earnings.

Thankfully after corresponding with the IRS and sending them a truckload of evidence (i had to send every paycheck stub and some contractual info, along with tax documents through the mail) they sided with me and said that i do not owe a penny. For a couple of months i was pretty scared.

If the IRS would have said i owed the money i was going to move to Canada. Seriously.

You're still supposed to file taxes even if your income is below the minimum. They still have to do the paperwork as well.

Today I was at a technology retail store, rather large one, when I overheard a woman trying to ask questions about the iPad. From the sounds of it, the sales assistant didn't know that much, or wasn't expressive enough for her to understand. So I spoke to her, and we discussed other tablets - their strengths and weaknesses - with the iPad for about 30mins. What surprised me was how complimentary she was of me, and how much I had helped her. "Do you work here? You should".

Helping customers in store isn't a new thing for me, I do it whenever I can. So I went to one guy who worked there and asked him if there were any vacancies, he said yes and told me he was watching me advise that woman - and that I should come see him tomorrow morning for a selection process.

Excited!

I'm looking over their website and what is required - 39 hours of induction, which is almost two weeks, and then a further week at another store. Classes for me start in about 4 weeks so this isn't ideal. Regardless, I hope to at least make it through - I don't mind working in a PC store without pay for a few weeks.

Well, I now have temporary part-time employment! I just interviewed for a position and they told me they actually offered it to someone else with more experience, but because they liked me I can get one shift a week in the position. So that's good, I guess. I've been volunteering at this place for about 5 months now, so I think they must feel obligated to offer me a position, even if it's only once a week. It's unfortunate because I thought my interview went really well and that I was a lock for the position, because I already knew all the procedures of the job and I'm on good terms with the staff. I was feeling very disappointed earlier in their decision, but I'm just glad to have any kind of job right now...

Dude you have no fucking idea whats its like to be in a conservative state. They ALWAYS side with the employer. It doesn't matter what color you are because everyone is fucked when it comes to standing up to corporations.

I wasn't working for a corporation. I was working for a guy who owns a small company and has like 10 other employees max.

He lied and falsified documents. I filed an appeal, and if that doesn't work I can take it to the Superior Court.

I was made redundant 8 weeks ago. Almost halfway through my payout :(. Made the decision yesterday and booked myself in to get my truck license (Heavy Rigid). I'm taking a risk using my limited funds but hopefully it will pay off.

Does anyone here have experience being a Dishwasher?
Would like to know how it is and what the hours are like. I'm sure its highly dependent on the place but I would still like some knowledge before going forward.

Tired of applying to places online and never hearing back from them, seems like I must be doing SOMETHING wrong on these 90-to-100 question long assessment test cause I haven't heard a damn peep. And anytime I ask a place how to apply they tell me to do it online ... only place I have seen tell people to go in person is for this pizza place and this WhiteCastles manager my mom hooked me up with.

I agree. Its likely because he was the boss and not because he was black. :/

Well, I already quit the electronics store after working there for two hours.

Why?

Because I got a phone call offering me the copywriting position at the Internet marketing firm! I was actually doing training on the computer in the back when I got the call. Stepped outside to answer, got the good news, and immediately walked back inside and told the manager what had transpired. Then I shook his hand, thanked him for the opportunity and walked out. Took my tie off before I even got to my car (and the new job has NO dress code).

I felt horrible but elated at the same time. I could already tell the job was going to super shitty, and I was rescused from it within two hours. Ridiculously, sickeningly, over-the-top lucky.

I start at the marketing firm tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Congrats!

Thats one awesome story :3

Congrats, Aesius!

I graduated from college in May and got a summer job, but it ended, so I've been unemployed for about 2 weeks now. I've been filling out apps regularly, even applying to temp agencies, but no dice. Do you all think it is better to spend more time looking for a job or get a minimum wage job in fast food/retail while I keep looking?

So I applied for the role yesterday online and successfully completed the multiple choice test. I got a confirmation email. Note, I did this at the actual store as I was instructed to speak to the manager after; my application should have showed up on the store's computer CMS. However it did not. I waited hours.

I then applied once more, and again got the confirmation email. Nothing on the store's end, and thus I couldn't be given an interview until they actually got my application results. Me and the manager were both baffled by this. This morning I contacted the Head Office and explained my situation to them, but they couldn't really help. So I then managed to find the company who provides the system for the application test, and thankfully some progress. I managed to get a reference number from them for my application - something I was never given before then, not even in the confirmation email. Having spoken with a gentlemen who works for that company, he assured me he would pass on the application to the Head Office and hopefully they'd then pass it on the store.

When I checked the store website again today, the vacancy position had disappeared. Hopefully this was just due to a timer rather than the vacancy being filled. I will be devastated if it's the latter - I was perfect for the role and even encouraged to reapply by those working at the store after they observed me helping customers on the show floor.

I'll keep you guys updated, but so far it doesn't look good. No luck at all. I finally find a position that I'm suitable for, management wants me, everything is fine and then the computer system handling my application fucks it up. Ugh

Christ on a bike, I lost three possible jobs today in some great locations.

One was a call centre agent position, the interview went extremely well but I've had no phone call in the two days since. Plus a debt collection agency didn't even place me in their "assessment day." McDonald's aren't even hiring...

There isn't much to say really, it's unskilled labor that doesn't have a lot of intricacies.
They bring you the dishes, you clean them and bring them back. Sometimes they won't bring them to you and will expect you to go fetch them.

Most places have a pretty nice commercial-grade dishwasher machine that cleans things 30 seconds max, you use the machine for things like utensils, plates, bowls, cups, basically anything small. You'll wash pots and pans by hand in a separate sink.

When you go in don't expect to just be washing dishes unless your restaurant is insanely busy. Most places will expect you to do various cleaning jobs on your down-time and at the end of the night, such as sweeping and mopping the floors, taking out the trash, organizing the cooler and the pantry, breaking down boxes, etc.

For the most part dishwashing is just mind-numbingly boring.

Also I hope you aren't worried about having pretty hands, because between handling chemicals all day, sorting and carying 160 degree plates and silverware, and steel wool eroding your fingernails down to the bed, they are going to look chewed up pretty fast.

Got a rejection email. It was cited as 'The Store Management', but after speaking to the manager at the store I learnt that it was not of is doing or anyone elses at the store - which makes sense. So I learnt that it may have been recruiters at the Head Office, which contradicts what I was told earlier by their Recruitment Dept that they do not access individual applications. Well what exactly do they do then to be named Recruitment Department? All very confusing.

In the application there is a test/questionnaire. Out of 8 categories, I got passed the requirements for 7. The only thing I lacked was Sales Experience. However I was good enough with customers on the show floor that the manager decided to wave away such a requirement. But obviously my performances don't shine through a computer screen full of text, and so understandably someone must have rejected my application because of that.

There are only two possible solutions for this.

1. Contact Recruitment and pretty much convince them (somehow) that the management at the store want me, and so to put me on the system for candidates.

2. The management somehow still offer me a job.

Neither look realistic at all. Lesson in all of this? Never be completely honest on your resume. I won't be given this job it seems. So the only realistic solution is to keep looking elsewhere, but in the meantime I'm going to ask to volunteer as an assistant and during this period I'll actually be clocking in hours of experience, so I can hopefully apply again in the future.

It's kind of depressing though that store employees want you to work with them, manager(s) want you to work for them, you live a few mins away and the pay is great, and bureaucracy takes all that away from you.

God, yes. This seems to be the only way around all these terrible experience requirements but I get worried that they'll find out about my exaggerations at some time and fire me on the spot. I just wish someone would give me a damn chance, but three years of study is probably too big an employment gap.

Meus Renaissance said:

Yea, I agree with this a little bit. A lot of it boils down to unrealistic expectations by some employers.

A personal example: just recently I got rejected from a job that required an Associates degree. Now, I have 3/4 of the credits required for a Bachelor's, but I never bothered picking up the Associates. Anyway, I clearly laid this out on my resume and application, but I get an email the very next day saying that I am rejected because I didn't pass the qualification of holding an Associate's degree. It was pure bullshit.

But yea, Retail stores are turning people away simply because they have no retail experience... which baffles me because I still see them hiring 16-17 year olds with zero experience period. And then there's certain jobs... like an entry level helpdesk job that requires a fairly basic knowledge of computers where the employers want you to have a bachelor's in IT already. The hell? Several years ago, that would've been a job you took on the side while attaining that degree.

And then people wonder why there's so much unemployment...

I got lucky though. I ended up finding a job that is full time and pays nearly twice as much per hour over my last part time job. It's hard work with crap hours, but it pays well. So, I'm not complaining.

Uhh, why is this bullshit? The job requires an associates and you don't have an associates. Why are you confused as to why you were rejected? 3/4's the credits of a bachelors degree means absolutely nothing because it is absolutely nothing.

Because I would've practically be given the damn paper if I walked into my local community college. I didn't though because that would've required me to wait on a transcript from my old college, and by that point I wasn't interested in the place I originally applied.

Yea, I guess it's not exactly proof that I completed the required coursework, but I feel like if I was given a chance with an interview, that they would've looked over that minor detail.

eh, at least you got that. Now you won't be left wondering about the job and can move on. Nothing is worse than having a couple solid interviews and then having no response, at all, even after you follow up. >:(

If I had to guess, then it'd be that they hired someone overqualified for the job, yet still paid them what they would've paid you (or less). It's an employer's market.

I believe his point was that the company's rejection was not "pure bullshit" like you claimed. You don't have the degree. Period. With so many applicants for jobs these days, having some basic requirements helps trim the list.

And yes, I would do what's needed to get the Associates paper so you can put it on your resume.

well i might have my old job back at kmart. i talked to my old manager about asking for my position back and he said he can probably work something out for me. i'm really thankful considering how i left really abruptly last year (and during holiday season too). i worked there for a few years so that kinda helps.

it's a shitty, terrible, boring, annoying, really lame job but you know what, it's a hell of a lot better than just sitting on my ass all day doing nothing. at least it'll hold me over for a bit until something better works out. i need the cash and i need something to do so it's better than nothing right now. hopefully everything will work out.

OH DEAR GOD

I apparently have a job interview tomorrow morning for a pharmacy technician position at the local rite-aid. i wasn't expecting a call back from them at all or least not an interview TOMORROW.

Oh jeez.

Hello unemployed GAF just gotta get some things off my chest. Just had a horrid interview!

It had been nearly three weeks since I had a call from any of the hundreds of places that I've applied or sent my resume to. So from out of nowhere I get a call from Toys R Us for an interview. Any other time, I would have just laughed it off, but I'm so desperate for work that I almost felt elated. I was happy that at least I had an interview.

So I dress up, get ready for the interview, optimistic, but my hopes were dashed as soon as I got there. They tell me its going to be a group interview which they had not said a word about when they called me. I would have not gone if I would have known but I say, fuck it, I'm here, might as well stay and fight it out.

The first thing they tell us is to get any toy from the store, which of course we were going to use to pretend to sell it to the interviewer. So we introduce ourselves, I was the only one who had graduated from Uni but of course it means nothing because I have little retail experience. So after that the HR person gives the group of us five guys a box of legos, so that we can build a toy together and then pretend to sell it. I was ready to get up and leave at that moment, but I stayed for some reason. It was impossible to get a word in, as one son of bitch kept hogging all the fucking legos and making the decisions, and even presented the fucking toy without giving any of the rest time to speak.

Next we have to make an individual presentation for the toy we had chosen, just bombed that portion. Kept asking us random questions of the toy which were meant to fucking stump us.

Then we went on to the individual portion of the interview. It was so clearly aperrant that that HR gave first priority to those whom they were interested. They should have just let the rest of us go. The first person to go in was the son of bitch that had hogged the whole group interview, they spend a half hour with him, and the next guy also gets a half hour. While the rest of the group have to wait in the store, with no place to sit down. The next guy gets ten minutes, and when it comes to my interview, I get at most five minutes.

The ridiculous part is that the first thing they tell me, is that its a night shift position from 10 pm to 6am! Basically meaning that the whole first portion of the interview was useless since all what you were going to be doing is stock and inventory, we were never going to interact with any customers!

The first question they ask me is "Why Toys R Us?" I felt like laughing but I just gave the worst answer imaginable saying that I wanted a job so that I could do an unpaid internship, clearly not giving a fuck at this moment. Two more questions and I was done. Keep in mind, that almost two hours had gone by.

I even asked them when I would get a response if I got the position. They responded by saying if they had not called me by Thursday, they had probably moved on to other candidates. If they were interested in me, they would call me for a second interview!

At the moment I could not believe it. A fucking second interview for a minimum wage shit job with shit hours. To give us more optimism, the next herd was getting ready to be interviewed when I was leaving. Awesome!

Sorry for the wall of text, just bummed out. Felt like such loser, all those late nights studying for these awesome interviews. Well gotta get back on the grind.

Been unemployed for about a year exactly now following college. Finally got not one, but two offers back to back. Tomorrow, I tell someone no and someone yes, and finally get to get started on a job. Light at the end of the tunnel is here. Good luck to the every GAFfer out there hunting. It may take a while, especially if you're fresh out of college like me, but you'll get there eventually.

What kind of post-college job can a guy do with a humanities degree? I noticed a lot of places want women in office jobs.

Get a degree in Journalism/English, for starters. After that, get some published clips out there (even if they are from unpaid work). Then, make sure your resume and cover letters are perfect. Finally, apply for some jobs.

That's how it worked out for me. I got pretty lucky with this position though. I would have been even luckier, as everyone at the company previously worked from home (my dream job). But alas, I still have to make the morning commute. The no dress code is freaking amazing though. I wore business casual today out of caution, but tomorrow is a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops kind of day -- and so are all of the days after that.

I got a pretty quick response from the Apple store in SF and went to one of their group events. I felt really good about how it had gone, but sadly I didn't make the cut.

Hope I find something soon here in San Francisco. I had some money saved up, but I feel that it's going to run out quickly. I mostly have retail experience and I can draw (at least, I would like to think I do).

Head Office said they did not reject me 100%, in fact, they said all applications go directly to the branch you applied for and that they can't even see the applications - only those working at that particular store can. What does this mean? Someone at the store, a manager, rejected my application.

I give up. Same shit, different summer.

Oh well, back to browsing for vacancies from 9am till 2pm on the net, daily then.

Why do you stop at 2?

So after almost a year of unemployment following my graduation, I just got offered a sales position at the new Jessops store opening in the latest grotesquely oversized mall, namely Westfield Stratford City.

I look forward to abusing staff discounts.

Went to two follow up interviews this week. Basically this means that they have narrowed it down to a few candidates and that I'm one of them. At this point, I'll take the job of whichever one calls first. One is for desktop support and the other is for web testing. Wish me luck!

I've been unemployed for over a year now roughly.... looking for any admin or data entry type jobs that I could find. I've had no luck...

I've also only had two interviews in this whole time, my first one... I failed because (and this is what I was told on the phone at the end of the week... at least I got a phone call though!) I didn't seem too confident (which I wasn't, first interview nerves) and since I'd be working with the public (I forget the actual position but it was to do with working with the public), they decided to go with someone else.

The other interview went much better but they said they went with someone better qualified or something like that...

I'm a bit more confident with my interview skills now though so hopefully I get an interview soon. Hate the job market though, so many "looking for experience" jobs, even ones advertised as trainee positions ask for experience....

I've found more jobs (which I've applied for) in the last week that don't ask for experience than I have in the last year. >_< meh

I just got let go from my work, and because of their creative "temporary status" they can give out to hires- I can't get unemployment.

I've sent out a shit ton of applications recently, and had a number of interviews, but I havent been able to land a job yet. Fuck unemployment. I've got another interview tomorrow and one on Monday, but I've been waiting to hear back from 4 different places for some time now (I've contacted them all and they still need to get back to the recruiters, some even went on vacation right after my interview, assholes). Some of the places would be excellent fits, but the process just moves so slowly it's infuriating.

Wouldn't a decent pair of yellow gloves keep your hands from going to hell?

The way I figure it most all the jobs I apply to these days are mind-numbingly boring unskilled labor because I have zero experience unrelated to art/ animation or childcare (and my childcare exp is from a long time ago ... and I really don't plain on going into childcare again). So if I'm going to work in a food related job then why not go for something I know I can do that doesn't involve customer service.

Just got a call from BK ... wanted me to come in for an interview today (wtf is with people pulling this "I assume you don't have anything better to do today so HEY, lets have this interview in a few hours!" bullshit?). Asked him if we could do it another time and now we're doing it tomorrow at 10 in the morning. Worked out great seeing as my friend called right after wanting to know if I could hang with him today (his last day in-town).

Meh, not even sure if I want to go. I would like to look into dish-washing first ... something tells me that BK location is much busier than the White Castles I applied to (it was a ghost town and I really like white castles so why not?).

so i got a job 2 weeks ago. gonna start working in a new shop called discount uk in orpington.

(they sell some crazy things for very cheap)

anyway back onto the story of how it is shit so far.

2 weeks ago i started training for 2 days a week we are going from orpington to hertfordshire. on the first week we was told we would get paid for training then a week later got told we are not. today

today we have been told the shop wont open to september 30th. was meant to be september 2nd but the there is something wrong with warehouse.

we was also told today we are now gonna be going to gravesend from orpington for the next 2 weeks. (gotta make our own way there though)

seems like soo much hassle at times

i had my interview this morning regarding the pharmacy technician position. been kinda having seconds thoughts on it after reading a bunch of experiences and stories online from people in the field and the interview didn't really help much either. i'm still really unsure if i want the job or if i just want to go back to my old job. i mean i'm thankful that they're giving me an opportunity for this but i just haven't heard anything good about the field. :/

so i dunno, guess i'll see where either one takes me and i'll decide when or if i get to that point.
