anyone else unemployed?

I've given up guys. I'm going to go back to school for something relevant. AKA, not American Studies. I'm old enough where although I'm not naturally very competent in those areas, that I can prioritize studying and graduate with something worthwhile. It's better than being depressed every single day and moping.

So my 1 year unemployment anniversary
;_;
is moments away, and I managed to secure a job interview on the day. Position and company looks pretty awesome, till I stumbled across this.

We promote our people from within, and encourage innovative, non-hierarchical and decisive outlooks. Our team regard each other as a family and share mealtimes. At the same time, we are focused on performance — every branch reports weekly results that are available for all team members to see. Individual responsibility and accountability for quality are reinforced. Key performance indicators important to our customers, like error rates, are linked to team members’ bonuses. All branches have quality boards and are internally audited every six months.
Was apprehensive, half excited upon reading it.

Fuck it, i'll go down fighting tomorrow.

I was supposed to start my internship today, but I told them on Friday that I wouldn't be able to make it in, because I was offered a better job.

Man it's been depressing for these past couple of months. I majored in IT and graduated in May. I've done a lot of interviews but in the end it just boils down to them saying that they hired someone else with more experience.
I even applied to every store and restaurant around me, but I never got any kind of call back. But two weeks ago I did an interview for an internship as a programmer and the next day I received a call saying that I got the job. I was really excited. For some reason though, their background check took two weeks. I usually thought it took 3 to 4 days. Then they finally called back last week saying that I would start on Monday. But soon after that, I get another call from a company I did an interview with about over a month ago asking if I was still available, which I told them I was and they asked me to come in for a second interview the next day.
This is an analyst position at an oil company and felt that I did great during the interview which lasted for about two hours. But in the end they had told me that they went with someone with more experience, which was quite depressing seeing how this was the perfect job I've been seeking.
I went in to the interview and got a job offer the next day. I think I just got lucky because the person they hired before quit or something. I did feel bad about the internship though. I wish I could've gave them an earlier notice but things don't always work out that way.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I'm just so excited, starting with nothing to something this big is just amazing. I start on the 7th. Don't give up Gaf! Just takes a little patience.

I received a random text from a girl I worked on my capstone with during my final semester of school. She asked if I was still looking for a job (I am), and if she could push my information to her boss because she felt I'd be great for the position. I was very thankful, and told her I'd be ecstatic if she could.

I received an email the next day asking for a phone interview, and we scheduled it for this past Thursday. It went great! Sure, I stumbled on a couple sentences, and didn't like my answer for one of the questions. But, honestly, the only way I would have done better is if I had known the questions beforehand. The gentleman on the other end was super nice, friendly, and informative. I just really liked how the whole thing went, and was happy when I hung up.

I got an email a few minutes later from him asking me to take an application test. In the email, he said he really enjoyed our conversation and that he was "looking forward to continuing the interview process with me." :-) I think that's a good sign!

So, he was going out of town, so he said I should expect to hear from him sometime later this week. PLEASE wish me luck!

I absolutely love the position. It's working for a GREAT looking company. The people look/seem nice from what I've seen. I think I'd fit in with those I've talked to. I respect the work of the company. And I feel I'm very well qualified for the position. This is as "close" as I've gotten.

I just got a job offer today. I start next week. This week will just be me living it up!

So, what do Word and Excel proficiency tests (as part of an interview) usually involve? I've been using both programs regularly since middle school and don't see how such a test could pose any problems...

1. Obviously depends on the job

2. Like you said, it tends to be pretty easy. Mine consisted of basic typing and Internet skills. Some older generation struggle with them

3. Mine wanted to know if I could multitask. One area that got me was some shortcuts I had never known before

Don't feel bad. It's a cutthroat business out there in terms of employment, and ultimately you're in business for yourself. Take the best offer, apologize to the others... they'll understand. There's no shortage of willing workers out there, they'll find someone else in no time.

The most frustrating part of this job hunt is that almost all of the positions want years of experience, and because of the state of the economy, they can afford to be picky.

I like coming into this thread and reading all of the stories (both negative and positive). This is one of those threads on GAF that's pretty tame and "real" compared to many others.

For those still hunting for jobs, it's a shitty process, but don't give up. You'll eventually find a job. With all that time you have of not working you can develop new skills as well. Teach yourself something new instead of just moping around.

If you don't keep teaching yourself new things then you'll stagnate and get stuck in the same spot for the rest of your life. I'm sure nobody here wants to work retail or do the grimiest manual labor job for 20 - 30 years. So, keep at it and never back down.

Who was it who said about people considering getting into web development, and that they were earning something like 60k a year? I've like to get into it, but it seems like you need years of experience and I have no idea how to get into it in the first place!

Can you program?

Well that's one place to start...

Web development is no longer about throwing some HTML tags into a text file. I'm finishing up my first project at my job, and even though it looks like the simplest page ever, it's 99% code.

Woah. I didn't expect this to happen.

Basically I was working through a backlog of applications on Jobsite, and one was based in Liverpool. My friend is currently living in a house there and was thinking of having me up there anyway this week, so I thought (on the off chance) if I could stay there if I was earning that I'd apply and see what happens. Literally NINE minutes after, I get a call from the company saying they want to bring me in for an interview and can see I have experience for a sales environment.

Right now I'm waiting for said friend to get back on Facebook and then I'll have to speak to my family if he's cool with me staying there, which I'm not sure he will be because people are living there with him too! Also, my parents will go apeshit no doubt.

Do you guys think I should go for this interview? I want to, and with my friend living there it's not like I need to look for accomadation. I always live by the philosophy that you can't always restrict yourself to an environment that is comfortable to you.

JonCha said:

Why don't you just call your friend instead of waiting for a FB reply? I mean, this isn't just an update about what you're doing on a Friday night, this is about moving in with someone.

Or am I just getting old, and this is how it's done these days? :lol

JonCha said:

Always go for the interview experience, especially if it's something you want to do. Now if this was an interview for those scam / insurance sales jobs, then I'd not go. Otherwise, more interview experience is always welcome.

Sadly, I can't stay with my friend permanently (which is, really, what it hinged on). Regrettably I won't be going - traveling to Liverpool is just not feasible. I'd be spending something like £60 a week!

Gutted TBH, because they sounded properly keen on me.

Oh, and I did get in touch with him eventually. He just happened to be on at the time.

I was so close to getting a job at Apple retail. I made it to the third interview but for the third interview, the guy wasn't in and i was told I would be called back to reschedule. Later in the day, i found out the position has been filled. I was like, "WTF is this shit?"

Turns out, as I found out from someone in the inside, the manager used the hiring process to hire a relative to make it look ok. I was pissed.

Care to share what kind of questions you were asked? I'ce researched in the past and people post experiences but didn't even get close to being hired, so it kinda negates the whole experience.

First interview was general questions about past experiences and handling situations. The questions were all randomized as they passed around an iPod touch with questions.

The second dealt with apple leaders in which they asked about job experiences and remembering things they would ask you. They asked very tough questions that involves why or how you'd make a difference in apple and something about Steve Jobs.

The third interview I was robbed of.

i had my interview this morning regarding the pharmacy technician position. been kinda having seconds thoughts on it after reading a bunch of experiences and stories online from people in the field and the interview didn't really help much either. i'm still really unsure if i want the job or if i just want to go back to my old job. i mean i'm thankful that they're giving me an opportunity for this but i just haven't heard anything good about the field. :/

so i dunno, guess i'll see where either one takes me and i'll decide when or if i get to that point.

I'm about to apply for a pharm tech position. Was it a tough interview?

Painting for 14 hours today sucked ass, but not as much ass as being unemployed. Stay strong my unemployed brethren, if I can get a job after almost 2 years of being out of work, anyone can.

Any system administrators/engineers/architects/developers out there? My company is hiring!

http://www.rackertalent.com

Warning: our recruiting process is challenging, and not always for the right reasons :-/

PM me if you have questions about the company (I'll do my best to describe the position if I'm familiar with it)

I am but I left on my own will..the company I worked for is great. I just moved out of country across and ocean.

Now I am learning the language and will soon start teaching my own maybe or something else.

Well, I didn't get picked up for the company's next show from Sept-Nov, but I've made a ton of connections and rubbed elbows with enough bigshots on this one, and their next project is in Dec/Jan, so I hope I'll get snagged then. Two months of unemployment ahead, save some retail shifts at my buddy's store. Hopefully I can use the time to do lots of productive things as planned, including a move, and several personal writing/art projects.

Ah rackspace. I follow a blog by an admin there (Racker Hacker is the name of it). I work at site5, so similar industry but without much of the hardware aspect to worry about. I just deal with FSCK's, failed hard drives/raid cards, and the occasional mount issue, and leave hardware issues to the guys at the DC :P

UPDATE: Well, I did the applications/qualifications test, and a different person grades them than the person who interviewed me. She emailed me back, thrilled, that I got a 20/20 (something I've heard to be uncommon), and that she "loved" my writing sample.

Furthermore, another employee there also saw my test, and asked the girl who I used to go to school with more about me. This college friend texted me and told me things were looking really good. This place only employs about 30-some people; so it's great knowing that so many people are already on the bandwagon with me.

I got an email yesterday asking for an in-person interview this Friday (tom) at 2pm!

It's about 250 miles away; and wouldn't you know it, my car died yesterday while driving. I'm out of money, and have no friends/family to take me. So, I got it running again, and I'm just absolutely praying that it gets me there. Just what I need, one more thing to stress about...

Good luck, man. Let us know how it goes.

I am unemployed as of last Friday because my contract ended. It worked out great though -- 3 months of solid work experience (IT/admin support for the federal govt.), with my last university semester starting next week. So it's time to shift gears into school mode while keeping my eyes peeled for employment come January.

Good luck to all those here who are currently looking for jobs.

Almost 2 years here in Westchester County, NY (January will be 2 yrs) and nothing.

No replies on 99% of my applications.
Labor Dept has me mailing in my monthly work search record so I can keep collecting.
Depressed beyond all belief.
I'm pretty sure my Unemployment benefits are going to expire very shortly, so no more car, cable tv, cell phone (Virgin Mobile $25/month) or basic necessities.

Got a letter from the Labor Dept that since NY Uemployment rates are below 8% (July) that emergency benefits have been cut. HOORAY.

Had an interview 2 weeks ago for a Customer Service position and this is how it went, verbatim:
Company owner: (looks over my resume briefly) So, you have a Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science...what is that?
Me: Sociology/Psychology mixture; it helped me learn about what makes people "tick" and gave me great people skills, which have assisted me in various employment settings.
Company owner: Thanks for coming in. You have the skills we are looking for in a person for this position.

He didn't ask me anything else. Didn't tell me about the position, didn't ask me if I had any questions or anything. 2 minutes and I was out of there. I mean, what other skills do I need to answer a fucking phone all day? I've been in CS positions for 10 years...

I really give up. I'm registered with 4 Staffing agencies; no calls ever from them.
I've applied for Cashier jobs and still no replies.
Changed my resume according to each position I've applied to.

...I don't have any outlets for my frustrations. I don't have any friends, literally. And, the one friend that I did have at some point, is a female that my girlfriend doesn't like so I haven't seen her in about a year. (strictly friends for 10 years).

Gonna jump off a bridge soon if shit doesn't get better soon. 2 years of being depressed without any alleviation or anything isn't fair.

Good luck to everyone else out there.

The job market in NY sucks. I've lived here most of my life, so believe me, I know. That's why I joined the military years ago and even now I work for a company that's based out of Detroit. I haven't had a NY job in 8 years.

got fired from previous job so I was desperate for another job.

Finally got a job as a security guard. Its not much, but its work. I'll hang on to this until I find a better one.

I know his doesn't help anybody find a job, but for anyone who is chronically unemployed and continually depressed about it: if you have the means, make yourself a small garden, keep it maintained (i.e., get up early in the morning and weed it), and grow healthy food that you and your family can eat. Use your hands, not machinery.

I know that sounds stupid, but for those I know have tried it, it definitely keeps your spirits up, and you WILL be putting food on the table -- literally.

Hah! RackerHacker is my boss believe it or not. He's easily one of the best sys admins in the company (and honestly one of the best I've ever encountered in the industry)

Our setup is similar. We manage everything from the OS level up to our applications and leave the physical hardware stuff to our DC Ops team, and the networking (switching, aggr routers) to our backbone engineering team.

Ah, such a small industry we work in :P Give him props for me. We have a similar job title by the sounds of it, as I'm a technical manager at site5 while he seems to have a position similar to that at rackspace.

The only thing that would keep me from applying at rackspace is that I love working from home. I don't really want to work in an office again :P

Hello unemployed GAF just gotta get some things off my chest. Just had a horrid interview!

It had been nearly three weeks since I had a call from any of the hundreds of places that I've applied or sent my resume to. So from out of nowhere I get a call from Toys R Us for an interview. Any other time, I would have just laughed it off, but I'm so desperate for work that I almost felt elated. I was happy that at least I had an interview.

So I dress up, get ready for the interview, optimistic, but my hopes were dashed as soon as I got there. They tell me its going to be a group interview which they had not said a word about when they called me. I would have not gone if I would have known but I say, fuck it, I'm here, might as well stay and fight it out.

The first thing they tell us is to get any toy from the store, which of course we were going to use to pretend to sell it to the interviewer. So we introduce ourselves, I was the only one who had graduated from Uni but of course it means nothing because I have little retail experience. So after that the HR person gives the group of us five guys a box of legos, so that we can build a toy together and then pretend to sell it. I was ready to get up and leave at that moment, but I stayed for some reason. It was impossible to get a word in, as one son of bitch kept hogging all the fucking legos and making the decisions, and even presented the fucking toy without giving any of the rest time to speak.

Next we have to make an individual presentation for the toy we had chosen, just bombed that portion. Kept asking us random questions of the toy which were meant to fucking stump us.

Then we went on to the individual portion of the interview. It was so clearly aperrant that that HR gave first priority to those whom they were interested. They should have just let the rest of us go. The first person to go in was the son of bitch that had hogged the whole group interview, they spend a half hour with him, and the next guy also gets a half hour. While the rest of the group have to wait in the store, with no place to sit down. The next guy gets ten minutes, and when it comes to my interview, I get at most five minutes.

The ridiculous part is that the first thing they tell me, is that its a night shift position from 10 pm to 6am! Basically meaning that the whole first portion of the interview was useless since all what you were going to be doing is stock and inventory, we were never going to interact with any customers!

The first question they ask me is "Why Toys R Us?" I felt like laughing but I just gave the worst answer imaginable saying that I wanted a job so that I could do an unpaid internship, clearly not giving a fuck at this moment. Two more questions and I was done. Keep in mind, that almost two hours had gone by.

I even asked them when I would get a response if I got the position. They responded by saying if they had not called me by Thursday, they had probably moved on to other candidates. If they were interested in me, they would call me for a second interview!

At the moment I could not believe it. A fucking second interview for a minimum wage shit job with shit hours. To give us more optimism, the next herd was getting ready to be interviewed when I was leaving. Awesome!

Sorry for the wall of text, just bummed out. Felt like such loser, all those late nights studying for these awesome interviews. Well gotta get back on the grind.

Sucks man. I worked at Toys-R-Us going through college and was the electronics (R-Zone) manager while I was there.

Unfortunately that's how they do all their interviews down to the build toys together part. Especially right before the holiday rush.

I'm embracing that the time to be an employee has passed and that I should be an entrepreneur.

So that is what I have been doing. I just need a little more formal education.

So I'm pretty tired of filling out applications at this point. 10 months with no steady employment is very trying. I've been doing some volunteering to take up time but it's really hard to get a break. I'm not sure the people I work with understand "reality." I guess I'll have to do like everyone else and go back to school.

This is funny advice for me, because I live in Texas and had a garden going before the drought arose and killed everything I was growing. It's almost like a metaphor for my life.

Had an interview today for a part time position at a school, was supposed to get a call later about the decision, but no dice. At least moments after finishing that interview, I got another interview for a data entry position. Fortunately I'm starting to average an interview per week. Hopefully, I'll ger lucky soon. It's better than nothing.

Its also quite funny to get calls from telemarketing companies who "forget" to put on their ads that they are telemarketing company instead of a real job. They are such a pyramid scheme, got a call the other day where the girl was practically begging me to come in for an interview. She even congratulated for getting an interview as if it was hard to get an interview with them. Do they really think they are fooling anyone?

I picked up a part time job at a grocery store that I worked six years at. When I left there in 2006 I was making 8.60. They hired me back at 8.00. I don't even see how that is legal. To make matters worse, the manager tells me to my face that they generally hire people at least at 8.50.

I've just decided to go back to school next semester and keep one of the jobs as part time. It's kind of amazing that if I worked 60 hours between the two jobs I hold I still wouldn't be able to move out largely in part due to student loans. Thank you higher education.

started my "security" job training in a small Japanese University. It was more than a patrolling security job. We were also doing front desk stuff. Call transfer, visitor log in. Also students checking keys for library and other rooms.

Its not bad. I think the front desk experience could be handy on my resume. Also lots of Japanese college students :P

Having a pm shift, I could get another job or free me up when I go Navy for recruit

Got a call today from the manager and as I walk into the store, I immediately recognise this girl working there. She was someone I hit on a few months ago and ended in horrible embarrassing failure!

Awkward

This is funny advice for me, because I live in Texas and had a garden going before the drought arose and killed everything I was growing. It's almost like a metaphor for my life.
How has Governor Perry not given you a job yet? I'm in Texas and we rock at having tons of crap jobs for people to do.

So I all year I have been working in retail and three months ago I got hired were I currently am. Thing is, that I feel exhausted mentally and flat out sad even after one week of vacation and now I can't sleep with five hours until I have to wake up.

It's a full time work with a lot of angry customers always complaining, but it's when my colleagues get mad that I become a bit broken. Problem is, that I can feel I might not last much longer and finding a new job is very hard.

Mind you, I have jumped right into it getting trained in retail job, after getting over a big depression the year prior and I still got some social phobia and anxiety. Which leads to me not talking much, being nervous when I need to eat in my breaks and thus not relaxing. The anxiety causes me to stress, forget and a lack of concentration sometimes, which can annoy my colleagues when I ask for help.

I don't know what to do. I don't wanna be jobless or have a job with no social interaction. And I have fought very hard for the last two years and succeeded with all of my goals so far, but these past two weeks I have been unhappy.

What would you GAF have done? Quit?

It should be added that I don't dislike my job, it's just that all of these angry emotions from people are getting to me.

Dude....I <3 site5 so hard. Best host ever!

Haha, thanks. We bust our asses to make sure everything works right. I got off work 2 1/2 hours ago and spent 2 1/2 hours of my own time performing additional tasks that I didn't have time to do during my 12 hour shift. It just never stops - but, I love the job all the same :)

Edit:

By the way, we're hiring for anyone that wants to apply:

http://www.site5.com/about/careers/

The manager told me he wants to hire me, so he'll get me signed up without any interviews. I then also got to see the applications of successful candidates and it turned out I had made a few mistakes on my own application, probably leading it not to show up on the filtered list. So now I know what to do, I won't need an interview and I could perhaps start within days.

And then the entire application website fails. It's still down and the company behind it claims it is in fact live. Ugh
