I've given up guys. I'm going to go back to school for something relevant. AKA, not American Studies. I'm old enough where although I'm not naturally very competent in those areas, that I can prioritize studying and graduate with something worthwhile. It's better than being depressed every single day and moping.

So my 1 year unemployment anniversary
is moments away, and I managed to secure a job interview on the day. Position and company looks pretty awesome, till I stumbled across this.
Fuck it, i'll go down fighting tomorrow.

I was supposed to start my internship today, but I told them on Friday that I wouldn't be able to make it in, because I was offered a better job.
Man it's been depressing for these past couple of months. I majored in IT and graduated in May. I've done a lot of interviews but in the end it just boils down to them saying that they hired someone else with more experience.
I even applied to every store and restaurant around me, but I never got any kind of call back. But two weeks ago I did an interview for an internship as a programmer and the next day I received a call saying that I got the job. I was really excited. For some reason though, their background check took two weeks. I usually thought it took 3 to 4 days. Then they finally called back last week saying that I would start on Monday. But soon after that, I get another call from a company I did an interview with about over a month ago asking if I was still available, which I told them I was and they asked me to come in for a second interview the next day.
This is an analyst position at an oil company and felt that I did great during the interview which lasted for about two hours. But in the end they had told me that they went with someone with more experience, which was quite depressing seeing how this was the perfect job I've been seeking.
I went in to the interview and got a job offer the next day. I think I just got lucky because the person they hired before quit or something. I did feel bad about the internship though. I wish I could've gave them an earlier notice but things don't always work out that way.

I received a random text from a girl I worked on my capstone with during my final semester of school. She asked if I was still looking for a job (I am), and if she could push my information to her boss because she felt I'd be great for the position. I was very thankful, and told her I'd be ecstatic if she could.
I received an email the next day asking for a phone interview, and we scheduled it for this past Thursday. It went great! Sure, I stumbled on a couple sentences, and didn't like my answer for one of the questions. But, honestly, the only way I would have done better is if I had known the questions beforehand. The gentleman on the other end was super nice, friendly, and informative. I just really liked how the whole thing went, and was happy when I hung up.
I got an email a few minutes later from him asking me to take an application test. In the email, he said he really enjoyed our conversation and that he was "looking forward to continuing the interview process with me."
I think that's a good sign!
So, he was going out of town, so he said I should expect to hear from him sometime later this week. PLEASE wish me luck!
I absolutely love the position. It's working for a GREAT looking company. The people look/seem nice from what I've seen. I think I'd fit in with those I've talked to. I respect the work of the company. And I feel I'm very well qualified for the position. This is as "close" as I've gotten.

I like coming into this thread and reading all of the stories (both negative and positive). This is one of those threads on GAF that's pretty tame and "real" compared to many others.
For those still hunting for jobs, it's a shitty process, but don't give up. You'll eventually find a job. With all that time you have of not working you can develop new skills as well. Teach yourself something new instead of just moping around.
If you don't keep teaching yourself new things then you'll stagnate and get stuck in the same spot for the rest of your life. I'm sure nobody here wants to work retail or do the grimiest manual labor job for 20 - 30 years. So, keep at it and never back down.

Woah. I didn't expect this to happen.
Basically I was working through a backlog of applications on Jobsite, and one was based in Liverpool. My friend is currently living in a house there and was thinking of having me up there anyway this week, so I thought (on the off chance) if I could stay there if I was earning that I'd apply and see what happens. Literally NINE minutes after, I get a call from the company saying they want to bring me in for an interview and can see I have experience for a sales environment.
Right now I'm waiting for said friend to get back on Facebook and then I'll have to speak to my family if he's cool with me staying there, which I'm not sure he will be because people are living there with him too! Also, my parents will go apeshit no doubt.
Do you guys think I should go for this interview? I want to, and with my friend living there it's not like I need to look for accomadation. I always live by the philosophy that you can't always restrict yourself to an environment that is comfortable to you.

Sadly, I can't stay with my friend permanently (which is, really, what it hinged on). Regrettably I won't be going - traveling to Liverpool is just not feasible. I'd be spending something like £60 a week!

I was so close to getting a job at Apple retail. I made it to the third interview but for the third interview, the guy wasn't in and i was told I would be called back to reschedule. Later in the day, i found out the position has been filled. I was like, "WTF is this shit?"
Turns out, as I found out from someone in the inside, the manager used the hiring process to hire a relative to make it look ok. I was pissed.

Well, I didn't get picked up for the company's next show from Sept-Nov, but I've made a ton of connections and rubbed elbows with enough bigshots on this one, and their next project is in Dec/Jan, so I hope I'll get snagged then. Two months of unemployment ahead, save some retail shifts at my buddy's store. Hopefully I can use the time to do lots of productive things as planned, including a move, and several personal writing/art projects.

UPDATE: Well, I did the applications/qualifications test, and a different person grades them than the person who interviewed me. She emailed me back, thrilled, that I got a 20/20 (something I've heard to be uncommon), and that she "loved" my writing sample.
Furthermore, another employee there also saw my test, and asked the girl who I used to go to school with more about me. This college friend texted me and told me things were looking really good. This place only employs about 30-some people; so it's great knowing that so many people are already on the bandwagon with me.
I got an email yesterday asking for an in-person interview this Friday (tom) at 2pm!
It's about 250 miles away; and wouldn't you know it, my car died yesterday while driving. I'm out of money, and have no friends/family to take me. So, I got it running again, and I'm just absolutely praying that it gets me there. Just what I need, one more thing to stress about...
I am unemployed as of last Friday because my contract ended. It worked out great though -- 3 months of solid work experience (IT/admin support for the federal govt.), with my last university semester starting next week. So it's time to shift gears into school mode while keeping my eyes peeled for employment come January.

Depressed beyond all belief.
I'm pretty sure my Unemployment benefits are going to expire very shortly, so no more car, cable tv, cell phone (Virgin Mobile $25/month) or basic necessities.
Got a letter from the Labor Dept that since NY Uemployment rates are below 8% (July) that emergency benefits have been cut. HOORAY.
Had an interview 2 weeks ago for a Customer Service position and this is how it went, verbatim:
Company owner: (looks over my resume briefly) So, you have a Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science...what is that?
Me: Sociology/Psychology mixture; it helped me learn about what makes people "tick" and gave me great people skills, which have assisted me in various employment settings.
Company owner: Thanks for coming in. You have the skills we are looking for in a person for this position.
He didn't ask me anything else. Didn't tell me about the position, didn't ask me if I had any questions or anything. 2 minutes and I was out of there. I mean, what other skills do I need to answer a fucking phone all day? I've been in CS positions for 10 years...
I really give up. I'm registered with 4 Staffing agencies; no calls ever from them.
I've applied for Cashier jobs and still no replies.
Changed my resume according to each position I've applied to.
...I don't have any outlets for my frustrations. I don't have any friends, literally. And, the one friend that I did have at some point, is a female that my girlfriend doesn't like so I haven't seen her in about a year. (strictly friends for 10 years).
Gonna jump off a bridge soon if shit doesn't get better soon. 2 years of being depressed without any alleviation or anything isn't fair.

I know his doesn't help anybody find a job, but for anyone who is chronically unemployed and continually depressed about it: if you have the means, make yourself a small garden, keep it maintained (i.e., get up early in the morning and weed it), and grow healthy food that you and your family can eat. Use your hands, not machinery.
I know that sounds stupid, but for those I know have tried it, it definitely keeps your spirits up, and you WILL be putting food on the table -- literally.

Hah! RackerHacker is my boss believe it or not. He's easily one of the best sys admins in the company (and honestly one of the best I've ever encountered in the industry)
Our setup is similar. We manage everything from the OS level up to our applications and leave the physical hardware stuff to our DC Ops team, and the networking (switching, aggr routers) to our backbone engineering team.

So I'm pretty tired of filling out applications at this point. 10 months with no steady employment is very trying. I've been doing some volunteering to take up time but it's really hard to get a break. I'm not sure the people I work with understand "reality." I guess I'll have to do like everyone else and go back to school.

I picked up a part time job at a grocery store that I worked six years at. When I left there in 2006 I was making 8.60. They hired me back at 8.00. I don't even see how that is legal. To make matters worse, the manager tells me to my face that they generally hire people at least at 8.50.
I've just decided to go back to school next semester and keep one of the jobs as part time. It's kind of amazing that if I worked 60 hours between the two jobs I hold I still wouldn't be able to move out largely in part due to student loans. Thank you higher education.

started my "security" job training in a small Japanese University. It was more than a patrolling security job. We were also doing front desk stuff. Call transfer, visitor log in. Also students checking keys for library and other rooms.
Its not bad. I think the front desk experience could be handy on my resume. Also lots of Japanese college students

The manager told me he wants to hire me, so he'll get me signed up without any interviews. I then also got to see the applications of successful candidates and it turned out I had made a few mistakes on my own application, probably leading it not to show up on the filtered list. So now I know what to do, I won't need an interview and I could perhaps start within days.
