Uh, Its not legal for them to discriminate you:

Thanks for the support of employment-gaf!
I'm so nervous about tomorrow's interview that I can't sleep. Has not happened to me for 5 years or so... Damn. I want this job so much that now I'll be too sleepy to defend my position properly. Only 4 hours of possible sleep yet, and I'be been trying for 3 hours now. I guess if I continue trying even if I don't manage to sleep I'll still be fresher than staying awake reading gaf....

Open interviews will be held for this position on Thursday, November 24th at Casting Central (321 Davenport Rd, Toronto, On. M5R 1K5.). Interviews will be held between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, and take place on a first come, first serve basis. Please bring a resume. Dress is casual.

It's a cattle call for sure, but I'm also highly educated and have a years experience. The problem is I've been unable to find work for a year and a half. This is a last ditch effort.

I'm pretty sure the age thing is really just a thinly veiled "has to look young and pretty".

Almost certainly got an interview of a retail job with Vodafone tomorrow. Tips for these kind of interviews? Is it all about communication, being friendly, warm etc. etc. I'm expecting S.A.R. questions.

The interview went quite good, but there are another 199 applicants for 20 positions, and all of them are engineers as well, with similar qualifications as me. We will see... At least it's not 100 applicants for one position or something crazy like that.

Returning from Madrid, I got a call from an association in my university about an internship I've applied for online, so it seems I'm also in that one (it's interesting, but not as interesting as the other one). I don't know when the interview will be, if I get one (most likely). And tomorrow is the interview in Valencia for an internship in Quality Control... It's very interesting, though I prefer the first one I guess. Still, got to knock all doors to get one of them open!

So I got back from the interview. I figured out quickly why they wanted 19-25 year olds. It was for a documentary about a PA working on porn sets.

Apparently the PA would travel to different porn shoots and they would film him/her behind the scenes. The interview was very informal, and they gave me a pop quiz of sorts asking if I knew what DP and A2M were. Classy stuff.

Got my job offer on Wednesday!! It's for slightly less than what I asked for, but that's because I need to get some certifications, which they will pay for. My new boss said that within 1.5yrs I should be earning (way) more than I asked for....that each cert will trigger an employee review and pay raise.

I was worried about this one. I knew it was down to me and 1 unemployed guy for the position. But then at the end of the day on Wednesday, my new boss texted me to call him. I was thinking what kind of asshole tells someone they didn't get the job right before a holiday vacation (at least wait until Monday, ya know?), but he just wanted to give me the good news! :) I do feel kinda bad for the unemployed guy, though.

So, uh, and of you have experience turning in a resignation letter? How did it go? I found a decent template online, and I don't care, I'm going to copy it and turn it in on Monday. Kinda nervous about the whole thing. :lol

Out of curiosity;

How many of you that are unemployed, also have a university/college degree?

I have a degree in Translation (Spanish, English, Japanese) and my previous job was editorial assistant, translator and interpreter for a Thomson Reuters subsidiary. Yesterday, after almost 2 years of unemployment I accepted a waiter job.

Awh man. ):

Do you live in a place where translators aren't needed. You have some very important languages under your belt, especially English-Japanese.

Assuming you live in California, where many game/tech companies go, why not work on something there?

For anyone in the US or Canada that does or wouldnt mind doing blue collar work -

The railroads hire quite often for a wide variety of jobs and they are very good paying jobs that usually dont require experience.

Try

CSX
Norfolk Southern
Union Pacific
Canadian National
BNSF

There are others but those are the majors. Good luck!

Master's degree in media sciences. Wrote a thesis on interactive storytelling in video games and what happens to gameplay once there's more/less of a story element. Interesting, but not very easy to market my skills right now.

BA in History, graduated cum laude from an honors college. Had a job for two consecutive summers helping out on a research study at a big hospital/research center where I'm from, had numerous leadership type positions at my college and worked closely with many of the college administration, spent a semester at Oxford and interned for the White House the semester after graduating.

Really fucking hope that's not why I didn't hear about the job I interviewed for before yesterday :( Talked to a friend on Wednesday who was really encouraging, saying that I haven't heard because they're reeeeeally considering me and I would've heard quickly if I didn't get it (which has happened to me before) but the wait is driving me insane.

I live in Spain, the country with the highest unemployment rate (20%+) of the Euro zone.

As for my language combination, it was my plan from the beginning to work in the video game localisation industry, so I'm just trying to finish my master's degree in audiovisual localisation and then go abroad to Germany or Japan where translators with this combination are indeed needed and accordingly regarded/paid.

Seeing that requirement makes me think that there are a couple of hidden requirements

- Candidates must have boobies
- Candidates must have low standards

The 19-25 age range is really, really sketchy.

Graduated from the University of Missouri in May with a Bachelors of Journalism w/ an emphasis in strategic communication. Didn't have any super cool honors, as I was really busy with work; but still had a 3.5GPA while working three different jobs - retail, dinning hall, TA.

:(

Damn, I salute you mate... Been working hard during my whole uni time and it's so exhausting.

Have you tried freelancing at all?

Good luck mate! Things are very bad in our country :( . It's a shame somebody like you does not find a job here, go for it! and you can always return (if you want). I was going to recommend you to try to apply for a Vulcanus (since you are studying a master now), but shiiit, those are only for engineering students (stupid).

My interview for the internship at the university (well, an institute related to the university) has gone quite well, but the last time I tried to apply at the same institution It went very well and at the end they rejected me.

Need some advice guys

I'm an HNC: Technical Support graduate(UK), and was wondering if Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician certificates are still useful? Most of the job vacancies here require you having that kind of certificates, but the thing is its only teaching you about Windows XP not Windows 7,http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/mcdst.aspx#tab2.

Preferably e-learning

As a Tech Support graduate, what kind of certfications are recommended? I'm thinking of getting CompTIA A+ certifications as well besides Microsoft Certifications

I would suggest trying for something in law enforcement. Here is my situation, I make over a $100,000 a year, have 27 days vacation, which am allowed to take every 6 months, and have about $100,000 in my deferred compensation account. I live in New York City, and in law enforcement..

When did you get the job, and what did you have under your belt before getting it?

At this point I need to accept I'm not going to find a job in either of the fields I've worked in the last 6 years (call center management/tech support).

I'm applying for restaurant work tomorrow. :/

Just keep applying and you will get at least some job. I did that and got it. Hell, it is not well paid but 800 € is better than nothing in current situation.

I currently work in retail warehouse (large scale buyers - restaurants, hotels, mini shops). Quite difficult working conditions (quite cold place, working in a freezer chamber), physical work (average 5000 kg of moved goods every day, so we call it paid fitness), working in two shifts... but better this than sitting at home and doing nothing, because i can't find ANY work inside my college degree field. And it will not get better for 2-3 years.

So i will have to look abroad.

I've decided to go back to school. There's no way I can support myself on two part time retail jobs, not to mention that I'm the most unhappy with my life as I've ever been.

That's on my to-do list soon, too. I've gone to school for Computer Information Systems, and I have a few problems with it, the most of which is it's something I'm not passionate about. It's not something I can honestly say if I had time on my own, with no flame on my ass to do, I wouldn't do much of what I'm doing with this. It's just work, and it's the type of work that doesn't stick with me or motivate me.

I think I might try a college and do something with games or writing. It sounds simple, but I'm really only looking for something that's meaningful to me. It's why I've never had a big want for money, and why I've never had a paying job before: I don't want to do something for money, but because of some reason behind it all. I expect many people to assume I'm some dumbfuck and that I'm asking to be in poverty (maybe I am, but I hope not...). Many of the jobs I know of here are retail chains and things of that sort; fine work, sure, but I'm one of those odd motherfuckers who would take a happy job with little-to-no pay simply because it's more meaningful to me. Maybe I haven't been on the hunt because I don't know what I want to do, maybe I don't want to commit to something I can't give my all to.

It's also bit me in the ass, to be honest. I've taken volunteer work (two jobs in fact; both freelance writing) but I worry doing that sort of thing will mean fuck all if/when I run to something for a job. It doesn't help that the college I've been in has no internships for the degree I'm going for. When I think about it, the whole thing looks like a lose/lose with some level of unhappiness to be found, which is rather depressing.

I sure as shit will have a window between the college I'm in now and the one I'm considering going to, so that will be my window to make my primary focus on a job and not on studies. Especially considering the winter module is an accelerated class.

Anyone in San Francisco know of anyone hiring?

I'll take any job, I'm working on learning programming, electronics, and improving my 3D skills, but I want some income so I don't have to live like a broke college student forever.

Thanks! How depressing is it that 25 is too old to get a job?

How are they supposed to know your age since I believe employers cannot ask anyone to list it on their resume or ask for it during an interview? They can guess based on the year you graduated or how you look but I have seen 22 year old fresh grads that look more like late 20's to early 30's and people in their late 20's to early 30's the opposite.

Going to be submitting my letter of resignation later today. I'm kinda nervous...but I'm also excited about my new job. I went and bought a new car yesterday, too. (I currently only have a company SUV that will have to be turned in)

Didn't get it. I give up.

Unless the job was in Winter Park, FL, I wasn't the guy who took the job from you.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. Have to keep trying.

Before I applied for the job in law enforcement I had 6 years active military. I started in 2004, and now am reaping the rewards. I know some of you wouldn't like the job but heh it supports my family. This year am on track to make $120,000 when all is said and done. Trust me the way this country is going were all that's going to be left. After all sooner, or later, we're going to be a police state anyway.

Nah, I moved to Brooklyn at the beginning of October since 7 of the 10 interviews I've had in the last year have been here in New York, and the other 3 were in the DC area (where I moved from). Congrats on the job though.

The worst part of the job search is entering resume details into every goddamn application.

Over and over and over and over. The same exact forms powered by Taleo, but you have to do it again because it's another company.

Game of Thrones reference.

I'm starting to get really really sad, irritated, frustrated and i get easily annoyed now.

For the first six months of this year, I got a job were they we're going to train me at retail work, then in the last five months I were hired at another retail job. Here I sold everything from electronics, toys to perfume and clothes. Me and my co-workers could have a lot of up fun but I also got annoyed at them, because everything they blamed on me.

So because I had a a bad period, my advisor told me to quit the same day we talked together. She said that because I have a diagnosis of social anxiety, but I explained to her, I have not felt any anxiety for the last half year. Nonetheless, she somehow convinced me, and I went to quit the same day. That was back at the end of October.

Though she told me, the system would help me get another job, where they will pay half of my pay, while the working place will pay the other half because of my diagnosis. And of course I have spent the whole year saving up on my bank account. Then we turn up at job center, and they tell us (which she already knew because she is an advisor), that they can't support me because I have more than $1000 on my account.

Now I feel a little punished, because I have to spent all the money I saved up until there is $1000 left. And that will take 1-2 years, until they can support me as well. So she tell me to turn up for this support group every week, so we can find out what my disorder is, even though I already know that I have a hard time consistently talking to co-workers. But that was not what I expected. I expected to have a job again next year,

So I'm kind of like, screw this. I will turn up at the support group sure, but I also want a job. Be it part time or full time. I'll try write some job applications tomorrow and send them by mail the same day, but I'll also go to stores other days and ask for job meetings.

But wow, does this bring up all feelings in me. I earn $10 for myself every month now, because I have a video game reviewer job, but I feel kinda betrayed by the system. I have fought so hard to save up all the money, and now they can't help me find a job, =(

I need some kind of motivation these weeks.

Doing half a day at a company tomorrow to see what I think. it's basically like the 999 calls at the police, but only I'm not working for the police, so you have to manage calls and work on a computer at the same time. Don't really want it but, I guess, if I get it, I'll take it. Will see what I think, though I feel like everyone is expecting me to take it (even if I don't like it) and rejecting the job would be a veeeeery bad move.

I'm over my little rant before and have come to accept Jobcenters decision, but now I wanna send out a whole lot of job applications to many different kind of work places. I just want a pay or else my savings will be gone in no time and I don't want to owe anything.

Been offers the job, but waiting on a writing job I applied for. Feel like my parents are exerting pressure on me even though they haven't said anything.

it's been a crazy year. after i graduated (which was actually august 2010), i had applied for a job where i did my internship. got an interview, and then stuff changed in the background, and the job fizzled and no one was hired for it.

then i returned to my old job i had in college (not gamestop). a part-time thing that wasn't too stressful, but also not a means to support myself. plus it was christmas, and i wanted to afford things for my family.

late last year i got a call to work with a pretty high profile company. made it really far in the interview process and somehow i was dropped and never contacted again. sent my resume out to everywhere, including my old part-time place since i would have liked working there if i could put my degree to use as a full-time employee.

january i got a call to interview with another big company. they were going to offer a full-time position if i stuck around for an unpaid internship for three months. i normally wouldn't take this sort of thing, but this company was worth it, and so i agreed. they told me they'd get back to me.

in february, my 87 year old grandma fell and hit her head and scraped the back of her hand really bad. she was put in a hospital and rehab home for a couple of weeks, and i visited almost every day, since other family either lived far away, were at school, or at work. so no job hunting.

march was the craziest month of the year. i had three interviews in one week. one was for a small game company. one was for the place i worked in college. one was for a small ad company. all three of them accepted me for the job, each one of them needing me on separate days. the game company one was located in la. it was a long, shitty drive. also, when i got there, it turned out the position was not the one i had interviewed for, but an unpaid internship. i walked on that. the third was okay, but i would have been the entire department, and the people in charge were nice, but seemed a little shady. i wasn't entirely comfortable there and left as well. so i contacted the place i worked in college, since i was to start that next tuesday (but unsure of what time to come in), and they told me they turned me down because they didn't want to tie me down with the type of job they were offering, since i had expressed interest in another department (as a thing maybe five years down the line). there was also another job, earlier in the month. the interviewer was late, didn't apologize for it, and then insulted my skills.

that was kind of a shitty week. however, at the end of it, i got a call back from the place in january. they wanted to offer me something better. so i started working for them freelance. it was really nice because they were super close by, and if i needed to come in in person, it wouldn't be a problem. eventually, i would become a full-time employee. the department closed in june.

i started working at the place i worked in college again. the department i wanted to go into was going to hire in the fall, but i figured this would be a good way to make money, keep a presence, and get updates on the position (as well as put in good work of course). in the meantime, i interviewed one last time at the place i did my internship, but was turned down in favor of an internal hire.

in september, i stopped my part-time job completely, retiring from that particular job for good. that next month, on my birthday, i landed a freelance job with a small company that was amazing. unfortunately, i wasn't working there very often. i also applied to a place i'd wanted to work since i was a teenager, and got an interview there. it was part-time though, and i didn't think the interview went well.

then, last month i went back to the same place i was at in college, except this was for a very short-term position that would only last about ten days. it was good for christmas money. even though i was part-time, i was still invited to meetings and little company outings. finally, i expressed interest in working in the department to the department head, and surprised them with some extra work during this part-time deal. last week, i was offered a full-time position with the company, which i accepted.

so it took well over a year, two websites, two resume revisions, and probably close to 150 resumes sent out, but i finally got something full-time that i could put my degree to use. it's been an adjustment getting used to the drive (since the day starts earlier), but i'm having a blast.

good luck to everyone else out there. if i could do it, anyone else can.

Damn I don't know how discouraged I would have been after all that! Kudos to you.

Currently working as a freelance transcriber on a big project that a friend recruited me for. I'm hoping it will turn at least part or full time next year but they won't know since they can't find stable clients yet. Either way I get paid as much as I put in so I'm trying to put in as much as possible in order to get paid more and hopefully get noticed and kept as a full-time employee. Pay is amazing but the problem is the pay schedule sucks for now since it depends on when the client pays for the project.
