I just found out I'm going down to Huntsville for work-related training, so I'm gonna be there all next week. I'm just wondering, from anybody from the Huntsville area, what is there to do down there? Good restaurants, any good bars/clubs, any pool halls, malls, arcades... stuff like that to do after training ends. I hear from people who went down there for training in the past, that there's a BBQ place called Dreamlands, that is amazing. Since I'm gonna bring my DS to play (in case there's nothing to do), I'll also need to know any EBs or Gamestops in the area.... I wanna pick up Kirby this week. Thanks for the info!

I live in Huntsville. I don't know anything about the bar/club scene. You have the Madison Square mall (largest mall) and Parkway Place. Arcade/EB/Gamestop is located in Madison Square. Yes, there is a Dreamland's. Many restaurants/stores on University Dr./72 West.

It's not as bad as you think.

Inform us please. Is it just like smalltown America, dispel the stereotypical hick state with people marrying their cousins and fornicating sheep.

tons of Smalltown America, some nice Appalacian forests in the northern parts, and some of Birmingham and Mobile is nice. Some isn't. South Alabama is mucho "Eh."

Pretty much sums it up.

Just moved to Huntsville last week actually. Started a new job. Really liking it so far. Much cleaner than I anticipated. Too many "W" stickers on people's cars though. =/

I've been living in Huntsville during my co-op semesters.

It's not like Alabama in general. It's pretty educated...well I don't know about the schools but I do know that there is a lot of research businesses growing there. So at least educated people work there, whether they were raised there I don't know.

There are some things to do, but as a student engineer on a budget, I haven't done really any. I have heard older co-workers talking about hiking/fishing/camping.

From what I've seen it's better to live closer to madison. It seems the homes get progressively better the more north of 565 you get in Madison.

Yeah, Lonestar's post pretty much sums it up.

Doesn't NASA have some things in Huntsville? You might be able to score a neato tour of something while you are there.

Unfortunately, being a military brat meant living where they told us, and one time they had the gall to ship us off to, gulp, Montogomery, Alabama.

:( :(

Montgomery is a real hole. That sucks. :(

It could have been worse though-there are worse places to serve duty in the Southeast. Meridian, MS immediately comes to mind-what a horrific drive-through town that looked like.

From what I hear, Huntsville is unlike the stereotypical parts of Alabama, it has a large concentration of engineers, since it's got NASA and many defense oriented companies (Teledyne Brown, which is where I'm going). Thanks for the info, Ed, I'll check the mall out when I'm down.

Huntsville is technologically advanced. Yes, Madison is nice, so is South Huntsville, near Green(e?) Mountain.

If it's Teledyne Brown on Sparkman Dr., across from UAH, that's not far from where I live.

I'm currently working at Lockheed-Martin just off Sparkman on Bradford. Got an apartment at Colonial Grand at Edgewater in Madison. Huh. Small world. Or, perhaps, large forum.

Yup, the Teledyne Brown over on Sparkman, according to this. Just had my secretary book a hotel and flights - it's my first time travelling for my company so it should be pretty exciting. Several of my coworkers (who are currently in Huntsville - at a conference for users of the program I'm going to be training in) mentioned that the BBQ is very good, and I'm a big fan of BBQ (you don't get too much in the way of authentic BBQ up here in Long Island). Pretty funny that there's quite a few GAFfers living in a rather small town, but yeah I guess this is a pretty big forum.

I grew up and currently live in Birmingham so I might be a little bit biased, but after travelling around the country for the past year, I have to say that you could do a lot worse than Alabama. The people are generally kind, you can get sweet tea at every restaurant, there is not a spot in the state where you can't see a tree, and the women are HOT. Cost of living is low, there are many nice suburbs and downtown neighborhoods in Birmingham and Huntsville, traffic isn't too bad, and if you're looking for something more to do, Atlanta is only 2 hours away.

Granted, Montgomery truly sucks aside from 9 square mile area on the east side of town, but there are plenty of great places in Huntsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Mobile, and Gulf Shores and the other beach areas. 99% of the people that bash Alabama only know what they have seen on TV. It's ridiculous.

The best Dreamland is the original in Tuscaloosa. All others are just pale imitations. Jim N Nicks is another great barbeque place, although it too has been turned into somewhat of a chain over the past couple of years.
