Anyone having doubts about Super Mario Galaxy?

What did people really expect from that? It was clearly a tech demo... I don't think there evem was any gameplay elements beyond moving Mario.

After years of being told it'd be at the Mario 128 would be at the "next" E3, most of us were at least expecting that. So yeah, I'd like a release date please.

lollin @ people who played it having no doubts and those who havent with doubts

i personally will get the game but i dont think it will be the best game ever or anything. im much more of a zelda/metroid guy meself. but i have no doubts SMG will be loads of fun.

What studio is develloping Galaxy? EAD ?
I believe the team is built up of those from the Tokyo studio who created DK: Jungle Beat and other developers from EAD.
But again, don't worry about the levels being tiny rocks, I have seen stated in several interviews that there will be many different sizes of planets from small to very big.

At least it's EAD. Im a bit more confident.

If the person that decided cleaning eel teeth in Sunshine was a good idea is anywhere near SMG, I'm very worried. I'm also concerned about the camera (Sunshine's was atrocious, and not having camera control in Twilight Princess was a pain) as well as the possiblity of the entire game being based on small planets with a black background.

At least regarding the control, from what I played, it felt exactly like "Mario". Really cool.

Is there crouching and crawling and the jumps that go along with them (long jump, back flip) like in Mario 64? I haven't heard too much about Mario's repertoire of moves.

Yep.

The only possible suggestion I could give them is a visual one: do something more with objects in the distance... give them a glow or halation effect or something... they look very plain out there, and are very obviously effected by LOD.

That's my only complaint really. I can't wait to see some of the planets... I have a feeling we may end up riding around on comets, jumping through an asteroid belt, and swimming through an entire huge globe made of water. I really think it's going to be marvelous. There's so many possibilities, and they can very easily add new planetoids or areas with WiiConnect 24. Hopefully they add a co-op mode with Luigi (sorry, the hinted at idea of a second player controlling the star cursor isn't very entertaining, Nintendo) and let you take screenshots to send to friends.

er, Sunshine's camera wasn't THAT bad and I had almost ZERO problem with the camera in TP.

Although it had many flaws, I had more fun with Super Mario Sunshine than any other platformer last gen. As long as Galaxy is improves upon that, i'll be satisfied.

edit: fixed grammar.

Yes, very similar at least. I know the double and triple jumps are in, and since crouch is in there I would imagine the backflip and long jump have made it in as well. Can't say about the side jump, but it's one of his best moves so I'd be surprised if they cut it.

Man... they need to eff around with gravity strength a ton in this game.

I really thought that by now people would be able to see that Sunshine was a pretty fantastic platformer. I understood the initial backlash and recognize the problems (lack of levels, sometimes faulty camera) but assumed that eventually people would be able to look at the game fairly, having long-since forgotten their crazy high expectations and the hate bandwagon that inevitably forms when a big-name game fails to live up to the hype. I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer. Maybe when it's released as a VC game for Wii2 people will see the light.

In the end, SMS was easily the best platformer of last-gen, with all kinds of excellent, clever elements and boatloads of charm. Moving Mario around the environments was still a total joy, and the difiiculty and breadth of the levels allowed for some incredibly satisfying moments. Did it have problems? Sure, mostly stemming, in my opinion, from Nintendo's desire to bring the game out in a timely fashion rather than polish it to the normal Mario-level gleam. So for all those hoping to bother have Galaxy game come out this year, and also be the best Mario game ever, you should probably give up on one of those expectations.

I hope Mario Galaxy is delayed until 2008. Seriously, only good things come from Nintendo delays lately. Take as much time with it as you like, Nintendo.

I loved Mario Sunshine's camera, because I've always been the kind of person that is constantly moving the camera stick and just always going forward with the character's stick. It gives you total freedom to do just that. Galaxy not having a camera control kinda worries me, but if the game is built with it's absense in mind I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Overall, playing it at E3 was a positive experience ---- but in all honesty, there wasn’t too much to see.

My biggest issue is when you look back on the entire franchise, how diverse the 2d Mario games were ---- but this one still felt like sunshine / still felt like Mario 64 ….
I was tired of Mario having a health-meter ever since he ventured into 3d – and now I’m just sick of it ---- Mario health is never as fluid and accessible as him simply being big vs small [power-up outfit vs overalls]

Being sooooo close up to the game it was really hard to say it looked any bit more detailed than sunshine ---- the art, rendering, and shading style was what tied it all together --- and finally the game felt more whimsical than sunshine -- ALL the enemies were outlandish and nonsensical - a must for any mario.

I didn’t buy into the wiimote pointer thing ----- the whole pointer gameplay didn’t really click to me in 3d --- but as in some of the bosses, when the game transitioned to 2d play mechanis it was fun to use the wiimote to slingshot Mario - him floating in space was kinda' fun, but not mario (and no sense of drifting off to danger) ------ I hope that Super Paper Mario doesn’t have better ideas when it comes to this pointer deal…

i got my finger crossed --- I’m just as interested as anyone to see what happens, and I have a lot of faith in that Jungle Beat team

oh, i LOVED sunshine --- i could do just about anything with that water-pack, and felt like a platformer GOD :D

How about the spin jump, 360 + jump. I found that to be very useful in Sunshine. I think it was the highest jump Mario could perform and it could be done instantly.

Go watch the videos at IGN, Gametrailers, or Game Informer. Camera was never an issue in the demo (largely due to the perspective used) and partly because it is likely more refined. And the background is not just black.

Galaxy did have camera controls --- i guess a lot of folks didn't pick up on the fact them being mapped to the D-pad on the larger planets.

from what i remember it was more 'clicky' camera like M64

I have some doubts about the game, but mainly because I really didn't like Sunshine and because I don't think it would be great if the levels would only consist of jumping from planet to planet.

On the other hand, every preview was extremly positive. The controls already seem to be perfect, the visuals are great and the bossfights looked really cool. Everybody with hands on impressions liked it and keep in mind that these impressions were from E3 2006. We don't know when the final version will be released but I think that Nintendo will give it enough time to be perfect.

Hmm, cool. Can't harm.

Even with the E3 videos, I don't know enough about the game to be excited or doubtful. Regardless, I enjoyed Mario 64 and Sunshine, so I don't think I'll be disappointed with whatever the end result may be.

the mushroom kingdom knows no bounds -- it extends to alternate dimensions (able to travel to them through paintings). it is an alternate dimension in itself!

Who's to say it doesn't extend to other planets? AFAIK, they haven't exactly dictated how big the "Mushroom Kingdom" is, right?

they always referred to levels as "Worlds" anyway, right? :O

I think if they take their time with it it can be amazing. Sunshine would have been amazing if they'd given it more time.

Really? I played the demo at E3, but I guess I never really tried to move the camera once I started playing the demo.

They've been working on the gameplay ideas behind this game for a very long time and have only shown a very small facet of what the game can do. I can't wait to finally get my hands on it, I just hope it's sometime this year cos the wait is getting very hard. I wish that Nintendo would finally launch their damn demo service and put out the Mario E3 demo to quench our thirsts.

That's what I wanted to hear.

p.s. That dig I made at SMS doesn't mean that I didn't like the game, but it wasn't going to save the GC.

Having no camera control in Zelda TP worried me, but I ended up not having any problems with it. I'm sure the same will apply for this game.

I remember I was talking to some guy at Gamestop about Zelda TP a few months before release. He said he had played the game on Wii and you could move the camera by holding down a button and then moving the analog stick... ****ing liar... :lol

Mario 64 established 3D platforming genre, Sunshine expanded and improved upon that game and I'm pretty sure Super Mario Galaxy is going to blow both of them out of the water. This is my most anticipated game ever.

So no, no doubts here. :)

I don't remember that. You mean with FLUDD?

Anyway, this thread needs pictures:

i always thought SMS was pretty good and didnt deserve the hate. i wouldnt call it the best platformer though.

donkey kong: JB absolutely butt raped any other platformer released last gen, IMO

which is another reason why im not really concerned about SMG

I actually found the lack of camera control in Twilight Princess occasionally frustrating, but I think its absence overall made the game much more accessible and fluid. I'm pretty sure Galaxy will be OK seeing as they've designed the whole game with an absence of camera control in mind, rather than tacked it on (tacked it off?) at the last minute like with Twilight Princess.

I actually hope most of it will be small planet hopping.

There is something called "freshness" and just having the same mass amounts of lands and worlds to explore is not taking the game into a new direction.

I don't want Mario 64 2.

That's true. Galaxy was built without an analog stick for camera from the start. Twilight Princess was only developed as a Wii game for about a year or less.

Sunshine's camera, maybe with the exception of the carnival level, was the best I've ever seen in a 3d platformer. It gave you such precise control that camera manipulation was actually a component of the gameplay-- and not in a bad way either. In Sunshine, the camera was, in essence, as good as you were at controlling it.

Of all the things people fault Sunshine for, the camera argument is probably the least valid.

Regarding Galaxy, I have my worries that it'll be received like Sunshine, but I also have no doubt that it'll be the best platformer we've seen since Super Mario 64.

I honestly believe the real Mario will be Super Paper Mario, which will be out on April 9, 2007. Mario in 3D just never made sense to me. 64 was pretty good, but looking back, it had none of the whimsy, imagination, or creativity that SMB3 or SMW had. Sunshine had its bright spots (pun), but I think was a gaming failure.

After spending a lot of time with NSMB and Yoshi's Island, it's easy to see that Mario (the platformer) belongs in 2D. Galaxy might be fun, it might have excellent graphics, but I still get the empty feeling that I always got from 64 and moreso from Sunshine, but that is without playing it. I have no doubt that Galaxy will be a great game, but I think the real greatness will be releasing in just over a month.

*Super Paper Mario hype increasing*

Considering the demo had 3 branching paths, I doubt it's going to be linear.

PLEASE NINTENDO PLEEEEAAAAASE don't make this game too easy like Twilight Princess, Paper Mario's, or the New Super Mario Bros.!

Take a cue from Yoshi's Island DS, gamers want a challenge! Hell, give me a frustratingly difficult challenge at the end!

I want challenge!
