Anyone here had a hernia operation?

What kind of hernia? Groin? Inguinal? Umbilical?
I had one (groin) fixed about 1 1/2 years ago. I had had it for a couple years, but it was very small and I could just push it back in. Got progressively worse, though...
Most hospitals will put you under, and then sew in a mesh to hold in the hernia. I had mine done at Shouldice Hospital in Toronto. They specialize in hernias, and have a different approach than the other hospitals. They only give you local anesthetic and then sew together your muscle tissue to hold in the hernia. The chance of it recurring is much, much less than the other standard procedure. I would definitely recommend having it done there if at all possible.
So because it was only local anesthetic, I was awake for the operation but all drugged up and out of it. My recollection is hazy at best, and I didn't feel any pain. I remember the doctor was complaining to the other surgeons about his wife wanting to redecorate. :lol After the operation, they wheeled me (too drugged up to walk) back up to my bed. Everyone shares a room with someone else, like a dorm. They try to match you up with other people like yourself, based on a questionnare. My roomie was a cool guy, and I made some other friends there, as well.
The key is to keep moving after the operation, to keep your muscles from tightening up. You don't want to lose any of your mobility. So even though it hurt like fuck, everyone would be doing laps around the hospital and downing pain medication every few hours. When we got better, we'd go outside and mess around on the putting greens, which was kind of fun. I think the stay there about 3 days, if I remember right. If you have the standard operation done, I think you go home right away.

I've had two, in the exact same place.
I woke up and was like holy shit, I can feel them moving my organs around. There wasn't pain, it just felt weird as hell and I was so messed up I started singing "Blister in the Sun." My surgery took like two hours and I was out of the hospital after an hour of rest. The second time it was even shorter then that.
It hurts like hell for the days following the surgery, like someone jammed a crowbar through your stomach. Just be damn sure to do physical therapy afterwards.

Did you tear it by lifting something? Or was it just a recurring one? A guy who my friend works with ripped his open two or three times. He kept lifting shit that he shouldn't, even though his doctor kept telling him to give it time to heal before lifting. This is why I went to Shouldice, with their low % of recurring hernias

That's why they make you walk as much as possible. I'll never forget when I hit my toe (not hard in the least) on a little uneven ledge in a doorway the day after the surgery. Unbelievable pain lanced through me like I've never experienced. Oh, and it hurt to laugh. Or cough. Probably for at least 2 or 3 days. I was really fearful of drinking something and having it go down the wrong pipe, and having to cough uncontrollably.Another thing they want everyone to do is to lose as much excess weight as possible. So if you're overweight at all, start dieting now. It not only helps with the surgery, but with the recovery.
Yeah i got the groin one. Inguinal hernia. Its gotten bigger but it still goes back in even if it goes into the scrotum sometimes... :lol
I am thinking about going for the Laparoscopic method as its suppossed to have quicker recovery times. I almost went for the method described here but i got scared

PLEASE, for the lOVE OF GOD! For you people that have had a hernia, what are the symptons. Last year, after working out and headed home, my testicles felt loose and hung pretty low. My right testicle is bigger than the left, but that's from having testicular surgery and only having one testicle that didn't "fully" grow or something like that.
Is it me or what? I NEVER took notice, as far as I could remember, how my testicles felt and how loose my sac was, but I did feel slight pain in my abdominal area. I've been to FIVE different doctors, including an ultrasound, and nothing was found.
One surgeon said it might be some nerve that runs down from your abdominal to your testicles, which isn't a major problem. I'm pretty much fine now, but does anyone know what it might could be? Maybe I really don't have a hernia?

I had a groin henia awhile ago, went under the knife for an hour, threw up and shit that night from the anaesthetic and the doctor told me it was quite a big hernia cause I had left it for some time.
The worst part is the few days after where it does kill to walk around, but once you pass that pain threshold it's as right as rain. Also, don't do any work for 6-8 weeks.. I left mine at 6 weeks but I should've left it till 10 weeks cause it still sometimes hurts.
Also.. sometimes your nerves can get damaged, where mine is, on the left hand side, sometimes I can't feel anything. It's nothing too serious but they can also damage some nerves so your willy can't get an erection anymore :lol Try not to get it done at a shitty hospital in other words

no problems here. as others have said, don't laugh or cough. luckily I was on codine for about 3 or 4 days. didn't walk much until the third or fourth day. you will end up laughing and coughing, so when you do, just press real hard against where your mesh was inserted.
mine was orthoscopic(?), so I only have three tiny scars/incisions. one at my belly button, one about a third of the way down, and another about two thirds of the way down. each scar is maybe around a quarter inch long.

I have had two hernia operations, both sides of my groin. It really is a good advice to avoid laughing... everything involving abs hurts like hell for a week after the operation. My first operation was done while I was serving in army; I got a one week holiday from there! WOOHOO! =)

I mentioned in the old confessions thread I threw up and it hurt my nuts one time. Someone mentioned the possibility of an inguinal hernia and I've been a bit spooked ever since. I get some aches just walking sometimes. No signs of testicular cancer at all either. Keep track of that. Could be the inside of the leg from bowling too much and balancing on one leg but I dunno. Never fixed myself an apointment before though the last physical I had, my doctor did give me a card for my own personal doctor. Not sure how I'd set up an apointment but I may try that.

My Dad had his hernia surgery about two weeks ago...He was able to walk a few hours after the operation, and can do most things normally now. However, when he sneezes or laughs it hurts alot, and his penis and testicles are a deep purple (though that's receding now.)

Wierd this thread came up. I just took my twin boy newborns to the doctor yesterday, both have to get hernia operations. Lucky for them, they will never remember any kind of pain or discomfort.
Basically, a hernia is where the abdominal wall gets weak, and your intestines push through (or fluid leaves your abdominal cavity and collects in your scrotum.) When you are born, your abdominal wall has "holes" in it near the groin to allow the testicles to drop. Sometime the holes don't close correctly and can be reopened later in life.
Having a hernia doesn't actually hurt. But the danger of having a piece of your intestine essentially hanging "outside" of your body is too dangerous to ignore. Especially if it gets worse, or if the body begins to heal it can essentially strangulate a piece of your digestive tract causing blockage or other complications.
