So this just came up again with a girl I'm talking to. It always seems to be a sticking point when starting a relationship with someone.

I do not listen to music or follow the musical scene in anyway. My parents, especially my father, do not play music in my house. I was never raised to listen to music or buy CDs. Music was never a form of entertainment for me. I have less than 30 music files on my computer and never having winamp or windows media player open. I don't own CDs and would much rather listen to talk radio, a game or comedy when driving around in my car or sitting in my room.

I was just asked if I like Howie Day. I responded, "Is he a musician?"

Does anyone else out there just not care?

I listen to music and i dont know who Howie Day is

Ive heard the name though...

Oh btw
You're dead inside

I don't know anything about popular music today.

Actually, you could name some modern bands and artists and I probably haven't even heard of them.

However, I do listen to a whole lot of crap from the late 70's-early 90's. I've got a whole harddrive filled with that stuff.

You don't even like video game music?

Well, I guess not listening to anything at all is better than convincing yourself you listen to "everything" like a lot of people I know do...

Ditto.

I'll listen to the classic rock station on my drive to work, but other than that I don't really listen to the radio or play CDs or anything. It's wierd cause that was ALL I used to do pre-fatherhood. I just actually have things to do now instead of reading liner notes and listening to a CD

I dunno, once in awhile I'll listen to music, but it has to be put to something. I used to be able to do it, but over the past few years I've had an aversion to "disembodied" music. If I'm driving or its in a videogame or something, I can tolerate it. But I CANNOT just sit down and listen to a CD. Its boring to me and I can't get into the music.

I feel sad for you.

I don't see the point of listening to video game, movie, play, etc... music by itself.

Belfast and I seem to have similar experiences.

Until I got high speed internet two years ago, I didn't follow music at all. I did have classical music CDs since I play piano, violin, and cello, but that was it.

Actually, I still don't listen to any American music at all. I stick to classical, Asian, and videogame soundtracks.

I've never gotten into the video game soundtracks much. I don't mind listening to movie soundtracks, but I don't buy video game music CD's at all. It's an odd concept for me, especially when I see some people around here who get really excited about the release of some obscure VG soundtrack. But, I figure to each his own. We all have different tastes. However, in this case, the original poster not listening to music at all is just plain weird. I don't know anyonw like that at all.

That's fine. Classical music is still music. You have a soul.

You people that only listen to classic rock should try My Morning Jacket (just a plug for one of my current favorite bands)

But yeah, no music? That's just crazy talk.

I was talking to a really close friend of mine and she said she wants her children to be brought to tears by a piece of music or a masterful painting.

I don't get it.

I can understand being overwhelmed by the techniques and difficulty of a piece of art, but being brought to tears by music or art?

I dont think I could have a relationship with someone who wasnt into music since it's such an integral part of my life. It'd be a struggle to be attracted to someone with polar opposite tastes although I'm sure I could manage it. The main reason I ended up with my girlfriend is our mutual love of oasis. Got me to talk to her and then it went from there. When I was a baby and crying, my mom would stick me on my back underneath the fan and put on some music, then I'd stare at the fan and move along to the music. It's been my passion since.

I feel really bad for you. :(

So basically she wants her kids to get beat up? :lol :lol

I can appreciate art, and have favorite pieces...but I'd never be really moved by a painting or music, unless the music was part of a sad movie's score.

Yeah, theyre a solid example of that sort of Southern Rock of the 70s mixed with jam band tendencies. I took some pictures of them the other day when I saw 'em in concert.

How the hell does a mutual love for oasis lead to a relationship? You talked about oasis? Wtf is there to talk about?

"I like champagne supernova"
"Yeah me too"

"I like Wonderwall"
"Same"

She had one of their shirts on and I went up to her after class and told her I loved her shirt. She thought I was teasing her since they've not been big in the states for awhile but I told her no I was a huge fan and had a bunch of their shirts myself. Started from there (this was almost 2 years ago).

not much, just radio in the car mostly.

and I have an ipod photo :P Thats nice for listening in bed to some classical music, or on a long car journey when the radio starts recycling the music.

I think a lot is down to lifestyle. When I was at university I loved music (and games), spending time *listening* to the music.

But after getting married, and then kids, and a stressful job, I just don't have the time to lay down and listen to an album. I'd rather just slap on classic FM and read a book. Music as wallpaper really.

I don't listen to any mainstream radio stuff.. but there's rarely a moment I don't have a tune in my head. I listen to my favorite albums over and over again for months straight.

It's actually kind of scary how influential music is to me. It can be a pick me up or even a downer.. sometimes it straightens me out. I need it like a drug.

i used to not care about music, now i listen to a lot of music but only really care about my favorite bands like tool and opeth.

This is seriously beyond comprehension to me. You're saying not one of those 30 or so music files on your computer are the least bit interesting to you? How and why are they even there?

Until I was about 15 I never listened to music. Starting with metal and then going from there. Now I'm 30 and have pretty diverse tastes.

My family nor I was never into music aside from orchestral popular movie themes and only because I was familiar with the source material.

are you a chartered accountant or something?

I met a guy who has lived his entire life in Canada, he's around 28 years old, he calls himself a DJ, and he doesn't know who The Eagles or Guns N Roses are (only examples, pick anything aside from Tupac, 50 cent, Dr Dre, Eminem, and...Madonna), and he doesn't understand the concept of a live concert, by a band. He's always been at shows with only a sound guy and some rapper with a microphone, or techno music blasting at full volume. He doesn't get the concept of a band, doesn't know what a chord is or how a guitar works, and he thought the singer of a band was automatically paid more than the others, because "it's the singer". When I told him that it depends, he asked me why the singer doesn't get pissed he/she isn't paid more.

I have a friend I've known since highschool who just doesn't "get" music. Doesn't own any, doesn't listen to any, and doesn't understand why anyone would. It doesn't matter what genre it is, either. To him, it's all just "noise". We talk about the subject quite often, since he seems really confused as to why so many people obsess over music.

If music somehow ceased to be, I'd off myself without hesitation. For me, it's lifes greatest treasure.

You don't care because you don't 'listen'. Simple as that.

I seriously don't know if I could be friends with someone who doesn't like music. That's just a bit too insane.

No you're cool.

For the majority people is just something to past the time- ie a recreation.
For another portion it's like life itself.

You belong to the 1st half but didn't get into 'music' probably because that you spent most of your rec time on videogames, movies and maybe having a life.

;)

If its not in movies/TV or on the radio when I go to school then I don't really listen to much music. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy a few genres though.

I like listening to music, but only when I'm doing something like typing this message or if I'm in a car.

What about listening to music that you connect with something? Considering your avatar, have you tried listening to songs from Family Guy like "the life of the wife is ended by the knife" or "Peter's theme music" ?

I didn't listen to music much at all through early teens (just the odd random song or tune that I like). Like a squillion other people, I eventually succumbed to these guys and haven't looked back:
