Anyone here played Commandos videogame series? One of Eidos' best.

Amazing games, loved the 2nd one so much.

I remember I often overused the spy/cigarettes to distract nazis, then knock them down, tie them up, carry them away and throw them into a huge nearby pile of incapacitaded buddies.

"Guten tag" *punch*

I was just thinking about Desperadoes the other night, and wondering why we didn't see more games like it these days.

Brilliant design, and a potential gap in the market for someone to investigate...

amazing series, love all the proper stealth ones. have equal love for the desperados games and robin hood legend of sherwood. best stealth subgenre ever.

Of course. One of the best videogames done in Spain. We were pretty proud of Pyro Studios when they did the commandos series.

ALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARM!
spain not doing too well recently on the games front. castlespania :( edit: oh wait, I forgot about pendulo. I like their games a lot.

commandos series and severance/blade of darkness are all time classics though. RESPECT.

Like I said, the game oozes atmosphere. It felt you were smack dab in the middle of the war. I miss these games. Is there anything comparable out there on the market? Can we see a triumphant return of the series in the near future?

Yes, as much as I like Commandos, my favourite game of this type was Desperados: Dead or Alive, from Spellbound.
The first one.

Same thing as commandos but in the far west, with better characters, a story, more fun mechanics and long as hell.

About the triumphant return of Commandos, stop waiting, because from what I've heard of people that work now in Pyro Studios it sadly will never return.

You are right on that, apart from the point and click adventures of pendulo theres not much more (after the debacle of the last castlevania).
BUT future indie scene is turning out pretty good though, thank god for that.

Oh, the good times. Great but hard games. :)

I'm waiting for the brave studio to port this franchise, at least Commandos 1, to tablet devices. I'd support a kickstarter in an instant. Just don't forget to localise it in Russia and enjoy your revenue. ;)

Seeing this thread brought back some good feels--definitely one of my favorite series from that era. Such a perfectly realized game in my opinion: fun, challenging, great setting, cool characters, a good sense of accomplishment. I still find myself humming the main theme from Beyond The Call of Duty on a regular basis. Alright, loading up Steam...

Played Behind Enemy Lines all the time when I was like 10. Didn't have the first idea as to what to do though, so I used cheats all the time:S

Yep, these games are fuggin brill, and this thread is timely as I just rebought them all on Steam this morning through the Humble Store sale for £1.99 - hopefully this link works, if not I'm sure you can figure it out:

Commandos collection at the Humble Store

'I WISH I CUD DO DAT, BUT I CARN'T'

Can't wait to enjoy
the hours of pain and frustration provided by
these games again!

Awesome games. I finished Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and Commandos 2: Men of Courage.

Shame they stopped producing them. They would easily sell a lot more of them today, their 2D graphic style is perfect for both PC, consoles and touch.

Outstanding games, played them all. Hell, I even liked Strike Force.

These games have online coop, sadly, the netcode is broken and results in desynchronization between players. My friend kills an enemy, I see that he's still alive :(

I really hope for a sequel or at least HD remakes.

I remember trying to set up Commandos 2 Coop during a LAN - that was hard! We didn't make it through one level...

I grabbed one of the original Commandos games on Steam when it was on sale for $2 or something, and gave it to a bunch of friends.

I only ever convinced them to play one or two missions, since the user interface was so complicated, but it was still kind of amusing. I basically had some GameFAQs walkthrough up on one screen, everyone on voicechat, and we were trying to almost exactly follow the walkthrough...yet it was still difficult.

OK, now knock him out and grab the keys. No! Tie him up! Tie him up you fool or he'll-

NOW WE'RE ALL DEAAAAAD

Good games indeed.

But as some of you said, they won't return. The old people in Pyro is now working in other studios like Mercury, Tequila, etc.

Imagine X-Com but in real time and you have to control all those people. These games were ridiculously hard and you'd lose way too much progress that'd make the Souls games look like COD with checkpoints every second. I'm glad they died, these games should have been made more accessible.

lol? you could save anytime in Commandos. You only had to be careful not to screw yourself over by quicksaving after being discovered.

Maybe I am remembering the wrong game then....If you can save anytime, just ignore my previous post.
Ah yes, I must have confused this game with Cannon Fodder, which I hated. I respectfully apologize for shitting on this game.

Lmao. My man.

One of my favorite franchises. This thread may make me install Commandos 2 and play it again.

I would love for another game like this taking after Commandos 2. I always wanted one with the G.I. Joe franchise.

edit: Yep, I'm installing C 1 & 2.

I played the first commandos back in the day. I remembered the game being too hard for me. In nowadays language, this game is the dark souls of strategy games
or maybe dark souls is the commandos of action rpg LOL)
Then my bro played the game for me and I sit patiently besides him, seeing him getting slaughtered and eventually managed to finish the game.

I tried Commandos 1 once back in the days but it never "clicked" for me.
I absolutely love Desperados though, took me years to finish it and I have fond memories of it.
I was so disappointed by Desperados 2, sadly a terrible game compared to the brilliant first game.

Toughest games I've ever played (age could have contributed) but they are still one of the best games I've played till this day.

God bless 1998. I love this series, classics.

I was 10 years old when the game released and I remember that I would lend the game to my friends and none of them would be able to play it, I felt so proud to be able to beat those games.

I'm surprised the studio still exist in some form, I would be inclined to support another entry if the same people who made the first games were involved.

Do we have similar games today?

+1 for Desperados: Wanted Dead Or Alive

Fantastic, fantsatic, fantastic game.

Cowboys. Rowdy Mexicans with giant sombreros. Can-can girls. Using rattlesnakes as a tool. Your main guy looks like Bruce Willis
which is totally intentional, the German voice actor is the same one who dubs Willis in movies
. Coolest Medical Doctor in a game. You can have a sexy woman attract guys by flashing her legs through her split skirt and then kick them in their loins to knock them out. One dude can carry around a gatling when you find one on the map. You can hide in houses and if there'S bad guys in there there'll be brawling noises and unconscious baddies get kicked out of the entrance (or your guy(s) and you get caught, so always have back-up!)

Seriously, it's one of my favourite games ever, but I couldn't get it to run on Vista and now I can't find my CD key to try on W7. It might be not as hard as the Commandos games, but it is more fun. MAybe it IS as hard and I just couldn't get myself to get as good at Commandos

The only negative might be the Chinese girl that constantly quotes Confuzius and is, if not a stereotpye you can't stomach, annoying as hell.

And there is no Desperados 2 and it does NOT have ugly 3d graphics D:

Commandos had such unique and challenging gameplay. Would love an HD remake of the series.

Who owns the rights to the franchise, Pyro, Square Enix?

These games would be great on a tablet, which fits with Pyro's current focus.

* Shakes fist at the Railroad level *

Really good games, i loooove the detailed artwork.

Loved this series. Was one of the few games i felt was worth playing a PC for. Would absolutely love a new one, although given the direction the series went (crappy me-too FPS) i doubt it'd happen.

Behind Enemy Lines and Men of Courage definitely on my top 3 RTS games of all time.

Shame that Commandos 3 and the FPS sucked big time :(.

The first one and its expansion were so tough, I found the 2nd much easier. The 3rd is the worst in the series but still good nonetheless. I even enjoyed Strike Force.

This series rocks. The characters are memorable even without much backstory. Level design is top notch, art direction is awesome as well.

Must have spent hundreds of hours on this when I was a kid, bought both the steam and gog version just for the nostalgia alone.

Back then I used to get my gaming exposure through PCZone magazine's bundled game demo CDs. I remember wanting to play Desperados demo badly but PCZone never carried it :(. Sounds like a fantastic game though.
