Anyone here played Commandos videogame series? One of Eidos' best.

Only played the first one back in the day. Awesome game! I might need to play through the entire series one day (bought the collection ages ago on Steam, even includes that fps).

Just bought these on steam a couple of weeks ago as I never finished them back in the day. They were damn hard but are complete and utter classics.

DANGER! DANGER! DONT BUY COMMANDOS ON STEAM. The original game is fucked and runs at double speed on modern hardware. Buy it from gog.com instead.

Eh, there are fixes for that available for Steam version. The one that this video links to seems to work for me; just copy comandos.exe to the BEL directory and coman_mp.exe to the BTCOD directory. There's another one linked to in the Steam forums that seems to be the same fix (The thread has another method if you still have Save/Load issues). There's also a separate resolution patch for both BEL and BTCOD here, and resolution fixes for Commandos 2 and 3 here.

EDIT: Although I guess if someone doesn't want to bother with all the rigamarole around the speed/save fixes, they should go for the GOG version. They still might want to check out the resolution fixes though.

I just replayed Men of Courage last week, the game is soo good. I remember not liking the first one for some reason so I didn't buy it from steam.

I remember playing the first game in my youth and getting deeply frustrated while playing it, I wanted to love it butit was just too rigid. It felt like the devlopers had one way to finish a level and if you veered from that even slightly you got fucked hard, there was no improvising or solving on the fly.

In saying that though, this thread is making me want to boot them up on Steam to see if my perceptions have changed.

How is the DRM free version? Is it the same one as on GOG, with fixes for the framerate issues included?

I bought the bundle and just tried the DRM free version of Commandos 1. Works great here. Don't know if I'm just lucky or if there is some kind of fix included. I'm playing on a Core 2 Duo.

Been such a long time, but I still remember the first level. I played the demo many times to get the perfect run. I recommend playing without saving for a more tense experience and a heightened sense of accomplishment.

I missed this thread when it came around the first time. Commandos was a fantastic series - but, as others have said, very hard as well.

I've only played the first game of this series, but I mostly remember it being quite difficult. Very rewarding when you finally manage to finish a mission with everyone intact.

Thanks for answering!
I bought it, and it works great. It's the same binary as in the GOG version, at least for Behind Enemy Lines.
Great collection for just 2$.

Great games, Commandos 2 was my favourite.

Fantastic example of the beauty of isometric art; those Japanese levels my gawd...

At time the games were balls difficult too, although too often the game seemed like a Cigarette Packet Throwing Simulator.

Favourite character was the Diver.

That rat like face and grimy accent.

ON THE CASE!

Commandos 2 is an extremely detailed and beautiful game.

There was a relatively unknown Star Trek take on Commandos with Star Trek Away Team

Stumbled across it in a Media Markt bargain bin. From what I recall it was a pretty satisfying game.

Desperadoes was a really awesome game. Played it so much. I wonder why they didn't made a sequal...

Oh wait they did, and it fucking sucked!

I played the first game and its expansion to completition just last year. Awesome game! Guess I should check out the sequels?

No, you are quite right: Commandos 1 is almost a puzzle game. The sequel is different, though: you are given a lot more tools so plenty of new paths open up. Specially in big maps like the castle of Coldizt (so many rooms!).
