Anyone remember the Nintendo Megaton?

Dram

I remember the built up excitement and heated arguments that were caused by it, not only on Gaf but on many other web sites as well. Each day the pressure seemed to build, until it was debunked and the hopes and dreams of many people were popped like an over inflated balloon.

Does anyone have any of the old Gaf threads saved, where the megaton was talked about?

Even though nothing came out of it, I had lots of fun discussing megaton and getting excited over megaton back in those days.

I remember someone created a pixilated logo with Sonic MegaMan and Mario on it, I also remember much madness building up to some day in December. It was a like second Christmas with Shigy playing the part of Jesus.

Wasn't the original Megaton just an overblown hype article that the rest of the world ran with and misunderstood? Wasn't it just a teaser for the following issue's Naruto GCN announcement, or some such shit?

Megaton was a personification of the hopes and dreams of hardcore Nintendo fans across the world. It was like the bull idol the people worshipped even while they knew the ten commandments were about to come and kick their ass.

Nowadays, Nintendo fans have no hope. They have no megaton.

um.. what ended up being the megaton anyways?
Well, that's the thing. There was no individual megaton, because every piece of Nintendo news for the next six months afterwards became megaton, from that new Naruto game to connectivity to Pac-Man.

You heard it here first folks.

Apparently Konami is very upset with Sony and their third party relationships. With weak sales of both MGS3 and MGA they are now going to move the series to Nintendo.

First things first, they are getting Silicon Knights to port MGS2 and MGS3 to the GC, while Kojima and his team works on MGS4 for the Revolution.

All in all, score one for the good guys.

PS - all this to be announced on the 27th at Nintendo's conference. IGN will have a big interview with Silicon Knights detailing the arrange

January 20, 2005 - A quick visit to the official Konami Website will bring visitors to an interesting statement. Plastered right there on the front page for all to see is a compelling teaser statement. Only two sentences in length, it reads simply like this:

"Check back on January 27th for some exciting news from Konami! If you love games, you don't want to miss this!

No indication as to what this "exciting news" could be has been made as of yet, but given the fact that Konami doesn't usually advertise upcoming information, we can only assume that its taking whatever it is very seriously. Could it be an announcement for an all-new game? A merger or acquisition announcement? Nobody knows, but you can bet that when we do know, we'll be back to tell you about it.

MG returns to Nintendo consoles, where it never was at home!!!111

That seems great and all, almost likely the way you put it.

But does anyone else feel like porting MGS2 and 3 would be a waste of Silicon Knights' time? I loved Twin Snakes, but it was a massive upgrade over the original. Also, the install base of the PS2 being so much larger than the Cube's, you'd have to assume that those ports would only be attractive to Cube-only gamers. Hell, Viewtiful Joe selled like poo on PS2 and that port almost made sense, in terms of opening it up to a new audience and $++ sales.

Which, if they're not planning on massively upgrading those games (somehow), both ports will sell like shit and Konami will back off its newfound support for Nintendo. I really hope the announcement brings something new to the table that makes this make more sense.

It's science.

wasn't the megaton the GBASP?

thought so too. Think there was a thread on the 'history of megaton' on Gamespot a while back. Contained most of the rumours, links to the sites who came up with it, etc.

Haha, that's a pretty amusing analogy.

I think GameFAQs ranks right below SPONG on the game news credibility scale.

I remember! Here was just a few of them..

Megaton Announcement looms early next week

Senior Nintendo sources have today confirmed that a major announcement is due early next week, on either Monday or Tuesday.

The announcement, to be made in conjunction with certain sectors of the Japanese press, is now thought to at least include NintendoÂ’s looming acquisition of Capcom. Speculation has also hinted at a Game Boy Advance sequel being revealed and moreÂ…

As the Japanese time-difference is in our favour, weÂ’ll have the news as soon as it breaks.

Nintendo to buy Capcom

Power-rumouring overnight in Japan states Nintendo is poised to make an outright acquisition of Capcom.

This staggering news will see Nintendo entirely consume Capcom, taking full ownership of all development and publishing operations around the world. From what we can gather, the announcement will be made later this month, perhaps December 21 or 22.

There was a whole bunch more... it was funny when it turned out to be a Naruto game for GameCube.

I fucking hated Megaton. It went on so long and people just wouldn't shut up about it. Any tiny thing, any little hint that Nintendo MIGHT have a date coming up for some news and it was "OMG it's coming! Megaton!!1"

By far the most annoying thing this forum has ever managed to throw up.

This is exactly why I come to GAF. Some of the stuff people post is just plain hillarious. Megaton was great. HEHEHE :lol

Capcom and Nintendo were in talks.
They decided to move closer together.
Five GC exclusives were announced.
Staffers at both forms talked repeatedly to the Japanese press about a takeover of Capcom by Nintendo.
Then something went wrong.
Then the exclusives evaporated.
Then Sega announced the Matrix Online so it all worked out in the end. :)

Anyone remember the war in Iraq?

Megaton was only about 2 years ago and every gaming site on the internet reported on it. This place was Megaton central. How could anyone not remember?

What Megaton? :lol

Know they made a big fuss about it for about 2 months. And than the announcement was delayed or something. And than I never heard of it again... till today :)

Megaton = Sony Lawsuit?
Source: GameCube Advanced

This was only reported by a couple sites and mostly brought up by the Gaming-Age forums, but had this been true, it's impact would've been substantial. It was also reported on Slashdot, which caused some bandwidth problems for some sites (widely known as the "Slashdot effect") and was probably the only real reason why this story got any exposure at all. The story itself was that Nintendo was suing Sony over the name "PlayStation" that Nintendo had apparently laid claim to back in the days of the SNES CD. Before it was proven wrong, many assumed this to be megaton. People were getting desperate.

I remember this one :lol. Ahh man good times.

The Megaton was actually Naruto for GameCube, which went on to spawn several sequels and sell many million units.

It was technically a megaton if you're in Japan and a Naruto fan, which at the time was a great many otakus.
