The President gets a $50,000 expense account. And $100,000 entertainment budget.

He also has a travel account for some reason as if everything doesn't become an official trip and flying Air Force One for half an hour doesn't far exceed the $50,000 account.

These are all on top of his $400,000 salary.

The first lady gets paid $10,000 a year from a private fund. Though she's long been an official office that gets all the same government perks.

It's really quite stupid when you think about it. And it's a modern invention along with the lifetime pension because Truman was shitty at managing money and Eisenhower had barely spent any time in private life.

why is this so funny, is it the straight face
At that point in history, Bill Clinton pretty much knew that the votes to convinct him in the Senate weren't there, and he decides to throw a sarcastic "I'm not gloating" party to taunt the Republicans.

Betty Currie (his secretary) is doing a solemn non-gloating dance to demonstrate how much Bill is not gloating. 😂

https://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clinton-gloating-cold-open/2861337

(Great sketch, although I really wish that NBC hadn't edited out the song originally used in the sketch. It used to be Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools," but now it sounds like it's been replaced by generic party music..)

As somebody else said, considering it's likely that Donald Trump will possibly choose a guy as his best option who hasn't been in elected politics in nearly two decades, I don't think picking a Secretary of Labor is a big deal. Maybe if we were facing Rubio/Haley or something.

I think that, no matter what, the most important factor of a vice presidential candidate is that they're someone who voters are comfortable with becoming president. I don't think Perez meets that criteria.

Socialist. Spend the country into the ground, and destroy commerce. I am a democrat, but a moderate one.
I guess I'd have voted for him, but only in the hopes that the party could reign him in a bit.
He can't spend without the approval of congress, so he'd have to convince most of the country to go along with it, which would be democracy in action.

Also, economically speaking, he's not socialist. Free market capitalism will still be very much alive under a President Sanders. He couldn't kill capitalism by himself even if he wanted to.

He's all hot air...nothing but nonsense.

Come on Hilary lets get this over with already.
His hot air convinced a lot of people to get behind him, so I don't think he should be dismissed so casually.

Sanders will destroy small businesses. His tax-plan is insane.
First he'd need to get it passed. This guy is pretty well-versed in money, and supports Bernie's economic policies.

I'd vote for him over Trump without a doubt but I think Sanders is extraordinarily unqualified and would be a disastrous president.

Unqualified? He's been a sitting senator for quite a while now. Disastrous? He's held many "correct" positions early, and historically has been ahead of the curve compared to Clinton. (e.g. gay marriage, weed legalization, Iraq war, etc)

Jesus, now I'm hoping Bernie will drop out as soon as possible so this incessant adulation echo chamber will silence.

Segments of this thread are more intolerable than the Buster liberal pundits on YT with 50,000 or less subscribers. Such unnecessary antagonism. You want Hilary to win? Then on their side we can let his supporters get it all out of their systems and on our side we can stop being such assholes.

This was the picture I was looking for earlier.

Whatever you might think of Hillary, this was a really, really important and historic thing that happened in American politics.

Yes of course it hurts Sander's message and is the main reason almost all of previous Bernie Sanders supporters here on GAF have ditched him. If you go back and read through the threads about Sander's tactics over the past two months you'll see tons of "I feel terrible that I voted for Sanders in my primary." posts.
Can confirm these sentiments having voted for sanders. Wish I didn't and I wish he left before he got all anti Hillary and anti Democratic Party. The most disappointing candidate I can remember.

List of vice presidential nominees since World War 2 who have never held high-level elected office (Governor, House, Senate):

Sargent Shriver, 1972. Was the VP nominee for the losing McGovern ticket, and was not the first choice--the original VP choice Thomas Eagleton, who was a Senator, dropped out due to media coverage of his mental illness. Besides being a backup choice, Shriver was a) a Kennedy, b) Director and Creator of the Peace Corps, c) Director of the Jobs Corps, d) Founder of Head Start, e) Ambassador to France.

... end of list.

I mean, Trump is the first candidate to be a crack-addled idiot who pissed away two years of his life trying to convince the country that the president was secretly born in Kenya so it's not like we aren't in an election of firsts, but I don't think a credible argument can be made that historically this is what we are looking for in a VP.

The problem with presidential elections only happening on leap years is it amplifies the 'this has never/always happened' narrative. I honestly don't think attacking Perez on his lack of high office would be terribly effective. I also don't think that Democratic voters would be particularly bothered by it.

That said, I think there are better picks than Perez anyways.

Just got back from a Clinton concert/rally. Literally every other mention was to get out and vote. Yes they're still saying to vote, not resting on their laurels at all.

Also I had never seen John Legend or Stevie Wonder live before. Holy shit I've been missing out.

I don't think it benefits her that media is calling the nomination for her just before California tbh. Specially because it is only thanks to a super delegates advantage.

Her camp must not be happy.

So should I even vote tomorrow?

Only if you are voting Bernie. If not, don't bother.
j/k, vote!!!

I suspect you are correct. Hence why she is being wary of calling herself the presumptive nominee.

I agree with this. The media should have waited. She clinches it officially tomorrow Sanders bows down by Friday or the weekend. Democratic Party works on a unified message and ignores the die hard crazies.

Oh snap, what if it's 1948 again?!?!?1

If Bernie wins California this will become a bigger mess than it requires to be. I don't even know if It would be nice for him to win tomorrow honestly. It would be an amazing moral victory but ugh no, this mess should end tomorrow for good.

Don't they have to pay for a shitload of stuff while in office though? Like the chef for non official meals, etc.

Random hipster guy looking into the camera to ruin the shot.

Lol he's the best thing about the shot. A lot of younger (and one older) women so happy that there's a major woman candidate, and the hipster guy is just thinking "yeah whatever, I liked her when it was lame".

How does it not? Have you followed her political career?

Yes, since I live outside the Bernie bubble, I have.

It pretends that dems don't like Hillary and what she has to say, which is obviously false considering she just won.

I can understand the Bernie Bros trying to get in their last punches though.

More like it implies she is a polls-pulled robot that would say anything to be elected, as contradictory as it may sound to stuff she said before (hence the "reset" button?)

That's my take on what the cartoon tries to say.

He won't win.

The gold standard of California pollsters has Clinton at only +2.

hey thank you AP for trying to spoil tomorrows votes. Good thing you guys are reporting news and not making news am i rite?

this junk is so rigged.

Indeed. I've lost all respect I've ever had for him. It's now about Bernie's ego.

In whose favor? An argument could be made that if Clinton has already won, then her supporters don't need to show up tomorrow if, say it's too hot, or you don't feel like it, etc. The same argument to be made of Sanders supporters except right now every social media outlet is telling them that fewer people will turn out for Clinton now so they have a chance so get out and vote! So who do you think is being hurt here?

They kind of did both in this case :) Would you rather them sit on the story because it seemed "unfair"?

Everyone should go vote regardless!

Laughable comment.

Hillary reaching the threshold IS news, and they are a NEWS organization.

Hell, not reporting on it would be unethical.

Here's the TRUTH:

Hillary Clinton has 1,812 Delegates
Bernie Sanders has 1,512 Delegates

2,383 delegates are needed

With 6 states + DC remaining, 813 delegates are still outstanding including those from California - the largest state in the country.

Super-delegates DO NOT count until July. Counting them now would be like counting the polls for California tomorrow. They vote on July 25th and are not official until then.

It is despicable that in an attempt to thwart what would happen tomorrow in California that super-delegates are being counted and Hillary Clinton is being called the winner.

Well if you want to get technical, none of them count until July. But if you ask someone who they're going to vote for, and they say Hillary, and they're a superdelegate, is there a single reason not to take them at their word aside from desperation?

I can't tell if this serious due to the Shaun King mention.

I think that number is going to turn out to be high.

Anyway, when your opponent is flying off course, you don't chase him. You fly straight and narrow.

Yep. It may be to high especially if a third party candidate steals some potential voters from trump.I think a third party candidate would have to get around 3% of the vote or higher to prevent trump from breaking the 40% mark.

Lets skip drawing lines in the sand...

Ignore Bernie supporters outright. Can you honestly tell me that the vast majority of America actually likes her? A non Democrat put her into a position that she had to fight back.

Yes she has more votes. But don't discount that a small growing group of people do not like her that happen to also be Democrat. That group chose Sanders a non Democrat. Ignoring favorites and team spirit that actually scares the hell out of me. We need a unified party and we do not have that.

Do I agree with the Bernie or bust people? No.

But do not discount that we have low voter turnout after 8 years of a solid president that lost both congress and the senate. We need every vote, we need unity within reason. Complacency is our enemy.
