My god.

Look at that stage control. People need to stop calling Amsa a low tier hero and start playing Yoshi already. He has some solid tools.

Calling Yoshi low tier is like calling Pikachu low tier. Just because not many people can use the character and unlock their power doesn't mean the character is low tier.

Yo guys check this out. Differences between Rivals of Aether and Smash:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhijU4rbMfw
Big differences:
- All strong (Smash) attacks can be used while running
- Releasing the analog trick from running allows you to stop instantly and use any jab or
tilt
- Minimal recover frames (lag) across all aerials
- Shields have been replaced by Parries (link)
- Using a parry just before the opponent hits you with an attack with freeze the other player
and grant you invincibility for one second
- Parrying a projectile will reflect it
- You cannot grab ledges, but you can walljump out of all recoveries
- Wall jumps grant you another jump
- There is no smash DI

Not included in video:
- No grabs
- No tumble state or knockdowns (at all), no invincible getup
- Many moves have extremely low knockback, making combos easier

Thoughts?

Isn't specifically Melee though and seems more like a general discussion thing. So it's either for a general Smash thread or a separate one. Add to that, I would want to keep all the negativity away from the OT. It's already bad enough everywhere else where people are either completely on this side or completely on the other side and are spreading some misinformation/presenting skewed views.

I see your point.

I hope we engage these difficult issues soon, though.

Apex 2015 - SSB4 - Top 16 - Aerolink (Diddy Kong) vs Abadango (Pac-Man) may have been my favorite match from Smash 4. Each game went nearly to time, and I didn't care because Abagango was just beating the shit out of Aerolink's Diddy Kong in the first match, and running around Aerolink's Palutena in the 2nd match.

When people complain about Smash 4 taking too long, I think its shorthand for how the pace of the game is. I don't think people would complain about 6 minute matches if more matches were like Abagando and Aerolink.

I really like some of the ideas, not sure about no ledge grab though.

edit:

nowhere to run

also Leffen earlier today was mentioning various things that aMSa is NOT using at the moment which makes everything even scarier

was this on the smash europe podcast, I can't find the vods anywhere.

Also I think some people are being really pessimistic about melee HD. Nintendo has remade a lot of their big sellers, like pokemon, mario 64, several zelda titles and smash is definitely in that tier.

I wouldn't say Yoshi or Pika are low tier either. But I wouldn't say that's always the case on where that latter part always holds true. Sometimes you just have those character specialists that just mesh so well with that character, even if they're awful.

There's a guy in norcal, goes by the tag "Pump," he won the weekly tourney in SF a couple weeks ago, videos here.

I honestly think Dedede is one of the best characters in the game. Gordos do well to cover approach and are one of the most effective and safest edge guarding tools, his moves all hit super hard and recover quickly, insane grab range that combos into his amazing fair or uair.

Essentially, everything is safe and all his moves kill.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but having played Pump a couple times (got sent to losers bracket by him on Thursday's tourney) I find it amusing that Bowser is higher up on the recent tier lists than Dedede. As Bowser I was really having trouble getting in on him. His 5 jumps really help.

Smash Reddit made a Smash4 tier list and what a fuckin surprise it's almost the exact replication of characters in top 8 / good showings in APEX.

M2K said in Brawl that MetaKnight stood out immediately as one of the only characters with Melee like options atleast in terms of Combos and such.

What characters stand out to you guys besides the obvious hoohahs when it comes to stuff like options, combos, and coverage? Hidden Potential?

Greninja is being massively slept on because "lolnerfed", Zero Suit Samus is pretty much sleeper Diddy Kong (she just requires a bit more work), and Yoshi is a monster. All three seem to be hidden in the shadows of Shiek, Diddy and Rosalina given the thoughts expressed by people playing this game from the start in November.

Yoshi is the character I felt like I resonated with the most during my time with the game, but I have no idea how to play Yoshi in any Smash game. I'm not sure if that helps or hurts. If I were to go back to Smash 4 he's probably who I would try to learn and stick with though.

Yah Yoshi scares me. He's pretty safe on almost everything he does (except his grab). He can literally press buttons for days...

The Shuriken nerf really blows, I hate it. Same for usmash and uair. He was definitely nerfed and some good tools are still there but is now solid instead of awesome.

If you folks want an even more colorful/interesting tier list for Smash 4, check Dabuz's one out

Yeah they're like high-mid or something. It just takes pro tech skill to unlock them. On average you still expect that character to lose to top tiers but a combination of matchup experience, outplaying and you can win. Silent Wolf improved and still lost pretty convincingly to Axe.

it can start an interesting discussion on execution requirements/character representation at the top level, and how it relates to tiers. Like in Xrd, there was someone in the Japan scene who apparently said that Ogawa kept Zato in the top tier (or at least in the past, b/c Ogawa seems unhappy with new Zato =p), something to that effect. But I feel like if the character has the tools and if they can be executed IRL, that's what makes them top and not purely results. It's what makes me fairly comfortable with Yoshi rising in tiers. I wouldn't think he's top, but still that may change.

Apparently amsa only started playing seriously in like the early part of 2013, which is freakishly scary.

I don't think I've seen a single Peach in tournament yet. Meanwhile, Ness, Rosalina and Luigi mains are doing work.

Disagree with that tier list. It's still way too early to say, but I think some things are clear at this point. Robin should be way higher too.

I seen a couple of Peaches. She's been heavily slept on since she was bad in Brawl, but also doesn't play like her Melee version so people really haven't figured her out yet.

I played a ton of Peach in Melee and Brawl, but totally abandoned her early in Smash 4 because her turnip pluck speed is so slow. I'm starting to come around though. She's got a ton of solid kill options.

I think the only major problem I have with that list is the divide between B-tier and C-tier. I would move the entire first row of C-tier up to B-tier (except for WFT), and I would also move Zelda, Kirby, and Dr. Mario down to C-tier. I would also put Palutena and DDD where WFT is, along with maybe Samus and Little Mac.

Also, seeing Jigglypuff and Lucario next to Marth and Meta Knight rubs me the wrong way. I'd put them at least a row higher (Lucario probably should even go to A).

You think Palutena is that bad?

Whens the next Smash tournament?

Tournaments happen everyday but next big one being streamed by VGBOOTCAMP is McSmashter I think on Feb 22nd.

Also decided to take a look at the Nintendo sponsored new comer stream, and commentator EE's description was Project M caster.

why do Rosalina mains always underestimate their own character

I think she's a pretty stiff character. So it just doesn't feel like she has a lot of options especially once a fast character gets in. I dropped her for the time being to focus on Sonic, Bowser and Pac-Man.

Smash 4 models are being posted online.

Source.

btw i'm just going to use this thread as the Melee community thread

Wow, that's neat. Project M U incoming.

edit:

also, just to actually add something, I'm going to my first tournament this month and I'm scared. I'll get destroyed (mayhem in socal lol) but I know it'll be worth it.

I just started going to tournaments a few weeks ago, for the first time since like....2005 when I went to one and got bopped lol. I'm still getting bopped but it's fun. I'm normally too anxious/lazy to go to events like this but my roommates are the TOs (I've been playing with them a lot since getting randomly paired up with them as roommates after basically losing all my friends and not having anyone to room with a year ago, they finally convinced me to start going >_>) and it's right across the street from my apartment. Just play a lot of friendlies with people.

Semi-outsider, but from watching, I think aMSa is at the point where he as at the level outside of the top 5/6, with the people who typically do well and can take matches/sets off of the top players

I can definitely agree with this. He's Axe/PewPewU/Colbol/Westballz level for sure. The really scary thing about his Apex 2015 play though is that he definitely "retired" after EVO last year for school only to come back and look even better than he did before taking that break.
