Apple at E3

Apple will be exhibiting at E3 this year, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Apple has exhibited at the expo in the past, which developers typically use to show off their latest hardware and video games. Apple has had a presence at E3 in previous years, although curiously the company's presence this year is not listed on Apple's page of upcoming events.

OMG PS3 to run Mac OS X? You can always hope...

I'm a bit fuzzy... but aren't cell phone games showcased at E3? If so perhaps we are about to witness some games available for iPods. Anyone else know anything more? (aside from Apple and Motorolla working together AS well).

Apple would know exactly how to market and design Nintedno's console if they were asked. Would be the best decision Nintendo made in years.

you are all forgetting that apple g5 processors are used in the xbox 2 dev kits and that microsoft owns a stake in apple. (it used to be 20%, im not sure what it is now.

The enemy of your enemy is your friend.

Since Sony and Microsoft are Nintendo's and Apple's arch-rivals, the above-mentioned alliance would make sense...
but Sony's US president was on stage with Steve Jobs in Macworld ....

You remind me of EA's 20% stake in Ubisoft...

depends on how you define owns a stake, but that stake of theirs doesn't even have voting rights, so they don't have a say in decision making.

Isn't Sony trying to cannibalize iPod with PSP?

Sony came out with an Ipod like device a little bit ago..

That's a common misconception. Microsoft sold all of that stock, at a nice profit I might add, back in August 2002.

A few years ago I went to the apple room at E3 and all they had were some games that were ported over to the mac (and food which was good too!)

Very reasonable move especially when PSP will launch soon...

Mac Mini = teh Pippin 2! :lol

Well the only problem with that statement is that I believe they sold more Mac Mini's in the first 20 minutes than they sold Pippins in its entire life span :D

Anyway Apple was at E3 year before last, so it's not like it's the first time they've been there. They DID have good food in their suite, too :)

Sorry if I sounded too serious. Don't get me wrong...I think McFly and Monkeyrun are intelligent posters.

Ando did make the joke that Apple should stop making hardware and go software only, but todays big companies have no problem to work together somewhere and fight against each other somewhere else.

Guys, Apple is at E3 every year. This is nothing special. Their booth is usually closed and restricted to employees only, and very small. It's probably not on their event list because they aren't showing anything while there. I'll bet the only reason they have a booth is to show face and get some Exhibitor badges.

Gameboy Evolution with iPod technology. The leader of portable gaming joins the leader of portable music.

PSP doomed.

now if only Nintendo start selling games on iTunes ..... :P

Actually, that would be really tight :lol

Impractical, but cool.

Additional info on the Digital River rumor:

Motley Fool said:
Gaming is the latest rumor to have attracted attention. Currently you can play Solitaire, Brick, Parachute, and Music Quiz, but the chance to download games to the iPod hasn't been considered -- until now. Rumors swept the market last week that Digital River, an e-commerce outsource provider, was negotiating to allow games to be brought to the media player. So powerful were the rumors that they sent Digital River's stock soaring 10% on the day, as it has been developing its technology to allow for the download of any content, games or otherwise, to any device.

It would certainly be a challenge to other game handhelds if Apple entered the fray. Rumors already abound that Digital River could cement a deal by February with leading game makers such as Electronic Arts or Activision to begin selling their games through online downloads. It is viewed as the next advance in having games reach increasingly greater numbers of people.

The types of games that would be available would initially be limited because of the size of the iPod's memory. But as memory size begins to expand -- it could rise to as large as 1 gigabyte if the flash iPod rumor proves true -- more complex or advanced games could certainly become part of the library.

Neither Apple nor Digital River has commented on the speculation, and some analysts question the veracity of the rumor, since Apple's iTunes has been at the forefront of the mill and the company has been able to handle the transactions for music itself thus far.

Still, Apple could soon be floating on a digital river of music, pictures, and games, positioning itself as a formidable threat and adding to its market dominance.

Games are the next logical step for the iPod. With the mobile gaming market growing at a fast pace, Apple would be silly not to add gaming capabilities to their handheld. I don't see them competing with PSP and DS, but going after the mobile phone gamers, the ones that like simple games like Tetris.

With what control scheme, though? If you have to carry an additional peripheral to control the games, then the portability/convenience of iPod is moot.

The 4th Gen Clickwheel gives you up/down/left/right with fire button in the middle, plus it can do analog left/right for things like Tempest/Breakout etc.

Be fine for simple stuff, and more comfortable than a mobile phone for games.

Coming soon: The iGame a game console to compete against the PS3 and Xenon. It'll be incredibly cool looking and cost $1,000!

iGame.

DS & PSP = winnar is not you. Barbie Prison Bitch Adventures for GRRLLLSSZZZ >>>>>>>>> RIDGE RACERS & MARIO.

Apple is licensing iTunes for cell phones right?

If they struck a deal with Nintendo to put iTunes in Game Boy Next, and also some kind of partnership to do a more expensive GB Next or GBA into i-Pod models ... holy shit, that would be crazy.

Simple games like Tetris ... well Nintendo has a huge back catalog of Game Boy games that they could use in i-Pods, look at how successful the NES Classics/Famicom mini line has been.

As others have said, Apple is at E3 every year. They're probably just there to make the 3 people showing Mac games in Kentia hall feel better.

Yup, I realize that.

Apple + Nintendo would fuck Sony royally up the ass though and Apple is seeking out other vendors for their iTunes service.

I mean even if its just the GBA, instead of phasing that out, why not include it into i-Pods? Those kinds of simple games like the Mario games, Legend of Zelda, Dr. Mario, Metroid, Mario Kart, etc. would clean up.

Exactly my thought.

Nintendo Puzzle Collection would sooooooo kick ass on the i-Pod.

The chipset for the GBA is so compact, hell they could probably make it even smaller for this iteration.
