Apple discontinues IPod Nano and Shuffle

No. Its mostly an issue with the supply chain. Its costing more to make them because the parts are being made in fewer quantities.

I went to Best Buy last year looking for an MP3 player for my stepson, who has a habit of losing them. There were maybe three, and not very easy to find.

I use the ipod Shuffle to listen to podcasts while I'm doing other things. It's small, syncs nicely with iTunes, battery lasts quite awhile, and I don't want to have my phone out and on. Plus I've been using it for three years - cheap mp3 players tend to stop working in a few months in my experience.

Sad to see it go, because I think it does have a niche.
 
Probably need to pick up a shuffle while I can then. I can't run with anything else - and a music player for when I'm doing cardio outside on the trail is like the ONLY reason I need a music player that's not my phone.

The iPod market dried up because other than the classic, most of these things lasted forever in good care, so there was little need to buy another until the battery blew out of them (which in the shuffle’s case takes a while). So at this point, with sales being the lowest they could ever possibly be, it was time to let them go. I’m with others in surprise that they still existed.

Yeah, this. It's super cool to fill it with podcasts and have it fit in your pocket without taking up space. Never bored.

I see people mentioning the apple watch, but I don't see it as a similar product at all. The apple watch doesn't have a headphone jack, and I don't ever plan on buying non-wired headphones. That and I hate wearing watches, so I'd want to just take the band off and put it in my pocket.

You are completely clueless. Nobody is buying an Apple Watch to primarily listen to music. It doesn't remotely compete with the iPod line.

It can, if your primary use case is using it while running or at the gym or something. I had briefly debated getting a Nano because it would be tiny for workouts and works with Bluetooth headphones and then I thought “wait why, I can use my watch for literally that exact same purpose”

Did I primarily buy it for that purpose? No, but t does supersede the need for one for my use case
 
What an end of a legacy. I remember my babysitter's son owning a Shuffle (can't remember which gen it was) before I owned an 2nd gen (?) iPod touch.

Its amazing how they still sold both the Nano and Shuffle even after Apple released new products until now.
 
Apple killed off the best portable music player. R.I.P. my friend. Seems like I will need to get a backup one as long as they aren't overpriced. 3rd was the best gen.
 
I loved my nano and my mini before that. But they all eventually broke and I took good care of them.

I went with a Sony walkmam last time and I love it. Great battery life, easy to use I just drag and drop albums on it. Also I can use a mini sd card if I want.

The gui isn't as slick as Apple but besides that it's superior In every way.
 
Anyone who wants a small MP3 player should look into the Sansa Clip. It is better than anything Apple has produced as a straight MP3 player.

Probably. Worse than a dedicated media player anyway, since it isn't a dedicated media player.

Though since apple is still going to make the ipod touch, I wonder if it just sells a lot more than the other ipods, or maybe it uses a lot of iphone parts so its easier to make.
 
My 6th gen square Nano was great for the gym at the time. I think it had a "power song" option. I made mine Cyco Vision by Suicidal Tendancies to get just a bit more running out of me. These days I have a Spotify subscription, so the concept of storing music isn't a thing for me anymore and no longer have a use for another device.

Now I use AirPods at the gym (for the record, they've never fallen out while on the treadmill) and keep my phone on the front of the machine so it hasn't been a problem.

I'd buy an Apple Watch if they were round.
 
Pretty sure the watch is outselling the iPod nano. Almost none of my friends seem sad about it being discontinued. Just a "they still made those?" Comment.

My watch lasts two days even with workouts. 3 hours is not normal.

That's definitely not in the norm. Mine consistently lasts for two days, maybe a day and a half if I did a workout that day, with the heartrate sensor on. The only time the watch battery will be that low is if you're running with GPS and the heartrate sensor on without a phone nearby, I think it's rated for around 5 hours at that point

Search around, your coworker's experience is not regular. She should probably get it checked out
 
I love using my ipod at the gym and I love just plugging it into my car aux port since its old and doesn't have carplay.

If I had a modern car with carplay and an apple watch I can see not really needing it, but until then IMO its crucial.
