5 button mice at the least. I use the side buttons in games and to browse back/forward in web browsers. It's pretty much my way of life now. At least they're showing hope.

I've seen the titter tatter design applied on two button mouse attached to some mac in Best Buy the other day, and it was even more awkward to use than an original one button titter tatter design. This however seems to be using touch sensors, no?

The scroll ball looks very intriguing though.

Several years late and about $30 too much. It'll sell millions.

touch sensors? As in no tactile feedback?

... I think someone dropped the ball on that.

But if it works, then more power to them... for someone like me though, I'd still prefer the maxi-functionality of the Logitech MX1000 to the sleek minimalist art decor apple design. I also note that its corded still... a chance to standardize wireless mice input wasted? Probably. MX1000 wins 3 - 1 (tactile feedback, more functionality (extra buttons and what not), wireless; aesthetically much more crowded).

Look at the bottom of the page--it looks like Apple actually worked out an agreement with Viacom to use "Mighty Mouse" as the name of the thing.

The Slashdot thread on this should be interesting. I'm surprised GAF beat them to it.

Yeah looking a bit further I am a bit disappointed. My current Microsoft (I know) Mouse has 5 buttons, and that's not quite enough -- aside from left and right click I also have the three Expose functions mapped to it and I'd quite like to add Dashboard too. Sadly that makes six buttons, and the Mighty Mouse's "programmable" functions aren't quite as versatile as they look. It's also not wireless, which is really odd these days.

That scroll ball COULD be really cool, though.

There is this, which may or may not be a good workaround for you:

Mighty Mouse even sounds as good as it feels. The audio feedback built into Mighty Mouse provides an aural sensation that responds to your movements. A tiny speaker inside Mighty Mouse produces button-clicking and Scroll Ball-rolling sound effects.

Yeah, that's the one thing about this mouse that has me mildly interested. It kind of seems as though they just mounted a mini trackball on top of a mouse. Interesting idea, and one that hopefully works well in application. One thing that's irked me about PC scrolling mice is the lack of any real 360-degree scrolling. You have up and down and recently left and right, but nothing in between. UI scroll bars are cumbersome and should've been made obsolete long ago. If this mouse rectifies that, I may have to buy an Apple product.

Please tell me you can toggle that off. It'll be like the GBA Mario and Zelda character noises, only in mouse form! It would be interesting if you could alter the noises it made though...

Is there any wireless mouse out there that's not heavy (and bulky) compared to wired mice? That alone was the reason why I bought wired mouse yet again recently.

I see your point, but it does have touchpad technology, which is bound to be more expensive than a typical mouse. Any other manufacturer and it would be $40 instead of $50 I bet.

I think it is a dumb idea too.

Hopefully we'll get some reviews on how well it works with a PC. The little roll ball has me very interested.

Ah, this could be why there's no Bluetooth version right now. It's power-mad!

What do you need all those buttons for?!?
Games - I can't play games anymore without a MX5*0 equivalent mouse

Let's take CS:S for example.

Left: Fire
Right: Secondary Fire
Middle-click: Reload
Button 3: Primary Weapon (Rifle) (scroll wheel up)
Burron 4: Secondary Weapon (Pistol) (scroll wheel down)
Button 5: Knife (big button left)
Button 6: Grenades (small button left)
Button 7: Bomb (task switcher button)

Using the scroll wheel to cycle through weapons takes too long. (and DAMN BF2 for not able to bind keys to the scroll wheel!!!)

Wait....so they managed to release a 2 button mouse....without having any buttons on the mouse....

My head's gonna explode.

FINALLY!! And out of nowhere!

I remember seeing the patent Apple released on this mouse years ago.

I'm ordering tonight!

ok call me stupid but, the touch technology for right and left-clicking, does it work like say, the laptop trackpad where in order to click, you'd actually have to life your finger and tap? It's not much of a difference maybe, but when I use a mouse, my finger usually stays on it.

I thought it had the same top-shell button action, but the touch sensitivity zones determine which click it is. EDIT: No, it doesn't. Heh. The question still stands then.

When IBM tried to use touchpad based keyboards way back, they made clicking noises when you pressed the keys. It didn't really help though and they switched back. This was like 17 years ago too heh.

If Apple is clever (and they usually are), the mouse can detect which sensor has more pressure applied to it when the mouse is rocked forward. Thus, you could leave your middle finger on the right sensor while your index finger rocks the mouse forward and because the left sensor is detecting more surface area, it knows it's a left click.

To reiterate, the sensor doesn't cause a click. It only senses which side has more pressure when you rock the mouse to cause a click.

Apple is such a gang of hypocrits and morons. Took us 15 years to come up with a two-button mouse, but it's just because the two-button mouse was a bad design! OUR design is much better! Now that we got it right, we can finally make a two-button mouse!

Mac fanboys are always whining when Microsoft copies their ideas, but maybe Apple should learn to copy from other people too.

*Closes thread, feeling like he just failed, even though he's really excited about this mouse.*

You will make Shantyman mad by saying that.
