If I may ask, what is so terrible about it?

Um.. lack of tactile feedback? If this is what i think it is... it may be the worst mouse ever.

Why can't apple ever just use what works? Why do they have to reinvent everything?

sensors that allow you to manipulate what appears on your screen merely by moving your finger

OMG! I wonder how Apple thinks we've managed to manipulate content on screen before!

That said, sold.

The way the OS is set up, the right mouse button really isn't that necessary... but a scrollwheel of some sort is.

...speaker generated clicking though, that's terrible until proven otherwise.

I disagree 100%. Contextual menus are fully integrated into the OS.

The first thing I do when I get a new Mac is plug in a 2 or more button mouse. I need to try this out before I make a judgement.

And much of the time(eg. Firefox and Dock but not Finder), click-and-hold will get you that. Maybe I'm just using all the right apps for that though.

I've ordered it so you can point and laugh at someone now. I'll report in when it arrives (says ships in 24 hours on the uk apple store.) I saved a whole £10 with the education discount!
Re: clicking, I suppose its like the click of an iPod scroll wheel.

Seems to work just fine for my iPod's scroll wheel. Heck, the geek in me is already wondering if you can hack/customize the sounds coming out of the mouse.

/wishes iFeel had caught on

By "until proven otherwise" I kinda meant until I get to test one in a store. It's just something I can't see working well, although that doesn't mean it won't. :)

I don't like to wait. :D
Haha, ok.

Hahahaha, i had the same idea a couple months ago... "Why don't they just combine a mouse and trackball together!?"

And this is not a "High End" mouse.

It's a decent optical, that's $20. Plus it has 2 touch pads, and a scroll ball (whatever that is). Tack on the Apple surcharge because it is Apple and it is easily $50.00.

5 button mice at the least. I use the side buttons in games and to browse back/forward in web browsers. It's pretty much my way of life now. At least they're showing hope.

yea, but, not everyone spends their every waking hour on the PC.

Haha, ok.

Seriously I think my biggest beef is that it does not work globally like a right click/ctrl click.

It still has tactile feedback, it just has sensors underneath the plastic that know where you fingers are positioned when you click. Someone over on another forum already picked one up ... here's his impressions:

--

1) It 'feels' just like a regular Apple mouse; the whole top end of the mouse (by the cable) dips down as the old single button mouse did/does. What's different is that under the hard plastic top, it can tell which side your hand is pressing on before it clicks; so it behaves as if there were a second button there, though there isn't one you can see.

2) The little button in the middle for scrolling is teensy. It really is a ball that rolls, not an "eraser top" like on a IBM Thinkpad or similar.

3) The side buttons have to be pressed together (for now?) to activate

THAT makes all the difference in the world.

Hit my local Apple store over lunch and picked one up with my Education discount for only $44.

It is really neat. It feels just like the old apple mouse and I love the added functionality. FYI - by default it acts like a one button mouse out of the box... You have to set up the right click as the secondary button in the options menu.

The scroll wheel is very tiny, but still easy to use. When you press it it activated the dashboard (by defaut) when you click the side buttons it actives the all windows expose.

Overall I am happy... I have felt the need to grab a mouse for my powerbook for awhile and was waiting until the often rumored Apple 2 button mouse was released. I just wish it was bluetooth :-(

That's exactly what I posted earlier in this thread. =p

Wait, if's the same mechanically then what's with the mention of the speaker? Did somebody in marketing not get a memo?

I'll wait before picking one up. I never found the feel of the regular Apple "press down to click" mouse to be very natural. In fact it felt very alient to me coming from a long line of Microsoft Intellimice so I'll wait and see how it turns out. I'm sure someone here at the office will pick one up soon. FOr now, I've got a ton of optical mice floating around that I'm in no rush to pick up another mouse, and I REALLY would prefer if it acted like a 5 button mouse as opposed to 4.

Using it now. Bah, you'd have to lift the finger on the right in order for it to tell that you're gonna right click. Which ever finger you put down first, that's how it clicks.

You can click the top end of the mouse just like a regular one.

I know, it just doesn't feel right compared to years of having to press the mouse button. Its a different finger motion.

Howso? You don't HAVE to press the body of the mouse. Just use the exact same clicking motion as you would with a buttoned mouse.

wait, no wait a second.

it has a speaker that makes a clicking sound when you press a button?

are you shitting me? jesus h christ...

Herein is the reason. The Apple mouse is too small. My fingers are fitting at the front of the mouse. For me I HAVE to push down on the body of the mouse. If they make a bigger mouse, it wouldn't be as big a deal.

Actually I might prefer that to the loud clicking noise that their current mouse makes. Personally I'd like it to make NO noise, just like I'd like my keyboard to make no noise.

FYI: I'm buying one the second I can.

I'm a function over form person myself, so unless it feels better than the mouse I already own - it will stay at the store. I've never liked the feel for any mouse that Apple has produced yet. They all seem to be made for children with small hands :)

I hate mice that 'fill' my hand. The apple mouse is more like a puck that you grip only with the tips of your fingers. I use a Razer Diamondback at home, and an apple mouse at work. Both are great.

*starts writing down speech to give to boss to get one of these*

Dito. I actually have my even smaller notebook mouse-speed configurated so that I just need to move my fingers to get over the screen. Most of the time my hand stays at the same position.

Heh, my wife and I have 4 Apple mice that we simply don't use because they feel uncomfortable to us (though I think her beef has more to do with the lack of a scroll wheel so she may be better off with this mouse). I think another factor is that the mouse is so painfully flat and my hand just doesn't rest that way whereas the Microsoft mice generally bulge up and fall off slightly - which mimics the position of my hand at rest. Its just a lot more comfortable to me.

To each their own though. I applaud them on finally getting out something with more buttons and the ability to scroll. It just doesn't work for me. Much like Apple keyboards drive me nuts (I use a macally because Microsoft keyboards require more tactile pressure for keypress and make a lot more noise per keypress), Apple hardware doesn't always work well for me.

No, no we don't. You see, a joke is funny maybe once, maybe a couple times if it's really good. It's never funny if it's repeated over, and over, and over, and over, and over...

Too old to learn a new trick with the mouse :). I have one of those wrist pad things to keep my wrists elevated.

It feels different. I don't like the titter tatter feel of Apple's mouse. I dont' like how the whole thing shifts in my hand when I click the 'button'.
