I bought it. Haven't tried it yet, will report my experience when I do.

What other productivity apps do you guys use?

As a PDF? How does that work?

It tells Safari to access the link with Good Reader instead of Safari. Good Reader will open and immediately download the PDF. Works like a charm.

I use Docs To Go for mobile word processing but now that Pages is universal, I'm probably going to switch to that. I fired it up and messed around with the tutorial and it seems uncommonly slick for a mobile word processor

Um, what else. Evernote and Notesy for, uh, notes. Remember The Milk is my to do list. Pastebot for quickly swapping clipboard data between my iPhone and my MacBook. Instapaper for reading long saved articles. Dropbox for just about everything. I dunno. I use a bunch of stuff.

I still find it weird to see how iOS handles events.

If it's a PDF already there should already be an "Open with.." option in Safari. But the "ghttp" thing will send most other pages to GoodReader (pages that were the result of forms, etc. don't always work though).

I've been using imgurfree a lot lately--useful if you want to post images to GAF. It's an iPhone app, but it works well and I haven't bothered to see if there is an iPad app.

Welp, got iOS 5 on my iPad 2.

Was this always there?
In portrait mode mail, you can just swipe from left of the screen to bring out the email list instead of hitting the button in the upper left.
Very odd if I never noticed that after a year.

Oh nice, I had missed that.
Just tried it now and it works fine. At the moment, it's very basic.
The inbox swipe thing is new.

does anyone know if iOS pages will import documents from iwork '06? i can only find references to it working with '09 stuff.

this question goes for goodreader too, actually.
I'm thinking it doesn't. I forget when, but the iWork file formats switched from a package (folder) to a flat file a while back. I'm thinking either 08 or 09 changed it. Anyway from my experience whenever an iOS app (like Dropbox or iWork's WebDAV) runs into the older format it just shows it as a folder rather than document. I'm not sure about GoodReader but I'm guessing it'd show the same thing cause it just seems to use the OS's built in viewers for anything other than PDFs.

Anybody have an opinion on the alternate browsers?
How is atomic browser? What's the best one? Or is safari the best?

I like Atomic. It does everything I need. I haven't tried iCab, though, which is the most popular, I think.

Is it possible to view PDFs that were annotated in GoodReader through iBooks for more fluid viewing when I no longer need to annotate?

Is it possible to do without a PC requiring step?

Is it actually more fluid?

You can go to "manage files," select the file you want, and "open in" iBooks.

I use Sleipnir (free), used iCab ($3?) for a long time (and still keep it cause it can do special stuff), and a more recent one called iChromy (free) seems pretty slick too. I'll probably go back to Safari with iOS 5 assuming it syncs bookmarks along with the reading list stuff...and if Nitro isn't available for third party browsers (I don't know if they need to be updated, but I know from someone else that Atomic didn't seem to be using it in the iOS 5 beta).

Yeah you should be able to. If you're viewing the PDF I think the button on the lower right or around there can send it to another app (looks kind of like a send arrow), which will copy it to iBooks' storage. Otherwise in the file list view if you select "Manage Files" or something, you can select the PDF then hit the "Open in" button to do the same thing.

I don't know yet, I haven't tested it, but if it ends up being more fluid then it would be nice to have the option.

Do any of you guys use exclusively universal or iPad apps? I have Skype and Justin.tv on my iPad despite them being iPhone apps since there is no iPad version.

Not until they do an iPad release for Nanostudio. And Soundcloud. And a handful of other music apps.

I have a long list of games that I got for my Iphone before I had an Ipad. The only reason I got an Ipad was because I had so much software for it already. I don't see myself double dipping on any apps any time soon. 2x looks good on a lot of apps.

Norm on the tested podcast said that iOS V doesn't have private browsing, but I could have sworn I saw a private browsing switch in a screen capture somewhere.

I am about 10 games away from my iPad having iPad/Universal apps only. I only swap an app out when it goes on sale for $0.99.

Hey guys. Anyone else not have all of their channel subscriptions show up in the official youtube app? All of the videos show up in the subscriptions page, so it's no big deal, but the names of all the channels listed on the left side is only partial. It's a bit weird.

Also, I know how to download youtube vids on my PC and and then transfer them to my iPad via iTunes. But does anyone know if it's possible to download youtube vids directly from the iPad itself into the iPad's video directory? I'm guessing no.

Alright, I got a gift card and have some cash left from finally selling my 3GS so I'm probably going to snag this from Best Buy tomorrow. I don't anticipate getting the smart cover since I really don't have much interest in a product that doesn't cover the back but I may get a white iPad and the blue cover.. looking for some impressions.

Is the back sturdy enough that I could get by without covering it? There is an InCase "jacket" that has a slot for the camera lens on the back which I am considering getting instead.

I've got a bit of an issue. So apparently my ipad 2 can't hold keep its wifi connection. Up until today it's been working just fine. Now, every 2-5 min or so I have to reset my ip on my ipad 2 to get an internet connection. According to what I've googled, this sounds like a hardware problem. Would I be able to get a replacement at the Apple store if even if I don't have apple care? I've tried different networks/rolling back the firmware etc...Is there anything else I can do in case there's a software fix?

It depends on your use. Try it out at the store to see if you think it will work. If you use it outside a lot, like on a subway, I'd definitely go with a attached case. If at home, and only goes from place to place, I put it in a sleeve/case and in a bag. Personally, I've been going backless.

Some thing I've also considered (but did not do) is to buy accident protection from squaretrade, instead of spending money on a case. So you know that even if you break it, you're guaranteed to get a replacement.

1 year of Apple Care comes free for each device. They'll probably replace it.

My iPhone and iPad 2 were both suffering from weird connection timeout issues on my Linksys modem that have totally vanished with iOS5.

I get weird wifi disconnects that resolve themselves after a few minutes occasionally. I assume its just buggy wifi code in iOS4.

Do you think iOS5 will break compatibility with a lot of apps/games that don't get updated frequently?

There are some weird issues with certain panels across different apps in iOS5. It results in weird black spaces with a slight gradient that can either leave an app only consmetically damaged (GoodReader) or make it borderline unusable thanks to the way buttons are handled on those panels. It seems like a simple fix once apps start getting iOS5 updates, but for now I wouldn't just assume everything will be fine (even though most of my apps are fine, for the record).

I think the Unreal Engine is a little buggy on 5 but I haven't actually tested it myself.

And, I mean, there's a chance it's just a beta bug. I wouldn't know.

Is there any quick way to quit and reboot Safari on the iPad 2? Everything has gotten greyed out for me, as if the keyboard was up, and I can't get the grey to go away. It doesn't allow me to click on anything so I basically can't navigate the internet, which is an issue because the iPad is the only connection to the internet I have right now since my computer is in for repair (typing this on a friends' computer). I'm pretty sure that quitting and restarting would solve my problem but I can't seem to figure out how to do it.

Go to another app or the home screen. Bring up the multitask bar with a double-click of the home button. Hold your finger over Safari until it wiggles, press X.

Awesome, that worked. Thanks a lot.

I didn't even take the charger out of the box since it's usually a universal plug but it seemed to be a struggle to get it in an it obviously doesn't go all the way. Is the charging cable different this time?

I ended up getting a Targus $40 book-style case btw.

Finally caved in today and bought an iPad 2, (and typing on it right now!) not having any regrets at the moment. I really want that light blue smart cover, just watched the video for it earlier and it looks absolutely adorable. Still working on the learning curve of what this device can do/has to offer.

Safari is lousy compared to the best alternatives. I prefer Safari on my iMac to Firefox etc, but iCab buries it on the iPad. iCab is the most essential app on the platform in my opinion. No idea how good Atomic is, but it's also very popular.

Yep, I have the same issue. Not a big deal, but I have no idea why it happens or how to fix it.

iCab! There's a module that does it automatically. Failing that, try Clip Converter. No idea if it works in Safari, but point your browser at it and give it a shot. I use it in iCab for the odd YT video that isn't available to mobile users. Works beautifully. The file won't go to the iPad's video directory, but you can play it in the browser or transfer it to an app like VLC or GoodPlayer.

Does the smartcover get worn out over time? Like, will it tear or break with light use?
If you're near an Apple Store, you can try one out for 14 days. I returned 2 just because I didn't like the color.

Mine has been fine so far. I'm guessing the color will fade over time, and I'd assume the magnet would fail over time as well but rare earth magnets are not supposed to lose noticeable strength so I guess it depends on the exact mix.

I imagine in a few years the plastic might start tearing from overall stress, but I really haven't found a situation where it will break down (note: haven't subjected to food/animals/children yet though...)

I guess all bets are off with the leather version, though.

Excuse me, I'd like to pre-order the iPad 3.

ipad3resolution-728-75.jpg

It's been a while since we've had a good Retina-Display-for-iPad rumour but iOS 5 is here to save the day – devs tinkering around with the SDK code for the OS discovered that the Twitter.framework features an 1536 x 2048 pixel icon.

That's double the current size needed for the iPad 2's icons and these mammoth image dimensions also show up in Apple's magazine app, Newsstand, leading us all down the Retina Display path leading to the iPad 3.
