Apple iPad 2 |OT|

Looks like the iPad 3 might be out in February, earlier than the March date that I suspected.

Shame that it couldn't be out earlier (like right now), because it would make a killer Christmas present. Maybe I could just give my mom an IOU instead of a Transformer Prime :(

Pulse is the best visual RSS reader. If you want something heavier on text but more industrial strength, a lot of folks here like Reeder.

I really love it actually. I only have one small gripe and that's that you don't seem to be able to segment the stuff you save into different categories or easily share multiple articles with selected friends.

If you're trying to put everything on your iPad, you're probably using it wrong and should just use a laptop. Like an Air or other Ultrabook.

That's not what I need.

I know what the iPad is, how I want to use it, and I can afford the extra storage.

To explain further: A MacBook Air would be less useful to me than an iPad. The only thing I need a traditional computer for at all is to use as a storage hub. A media server.

@Copernicus, not only is it a computer, it's the best computer I own.

EDIT: I toned my original post down because I didnt mean to sound so harsh. If you saw it, sorry about that.

I saw it tobor. You're a mean dude.

/shakes fist

Sent from my best computer, the iPad.

iʻm finding i use it more than my MBP as well. the music production apps are already trumping what iʻm capable of doing on a desktop.

iʻm with toby on this one, itʻs an awesome *computer*

Already asked in the gaming thread.. didn't realise there was an iPad 2 thread..

I'm thinking of getting an iPad 2 for Christmas.. (my Dad wants to pay half of it!) - thoughts?
Should I get one or wait for iPad 3?

I'm not going to be gaming on it ALL the time (I have a 3DS and PSP for that) - it's mainly for email/calendar/books etc. during my commute.

Thoughts/advice?

Thanks in advance guys.

I'm waiting. The next version is only 2-3 months away and we will probably see a nice spec bump, but if they do a retina display without having the A6 chip then I will be waiting for iPad4.

I'm looking for a really classy leather iPad 2 case. I want something that doesn't add a ton of bulk and fits snug on the iPad. Anyone?

*i also want to mention I'm not looking for a sleeve either. I would like one that opens up.

I posted this a couple pages back. I think it's what you're looking for:

I said after a while of use, I'd review it:

Targus 360 iPad 2 Case

Works as intended, and it's not bulky at all, either. We love it. The case makes it very easy to put the iPad 2 into "display" mode, like shown in the first 2 pics above. Very convenient.

Highly recommended. Bought it for $35 on Amazon.

Where are you seeing this rumor? That would be great. I'm this close to returning the Fire, slapping android on my touchpad, and just waiting it out for the iPad.

As far as the 'computer' discussion, for what a lot of people use their home computer for, there's no reason they wouldn't use the iPad for most of it. It wouldn't be the case for me, but it's hardly a far fetched idea.

Well, maybe the next decade, tablets will actually be able to replace a computer.

That's obviously dependent on your needs and use cases.

Keep in mind, I'm talking about my personal computer use. Work is a different issue(I use a regular computer at work, at least for now). It's back to the whole car/truck analogy. Even so...

Harry McCracken(Former editor of PC World Magazine, no less), agrees with me. He's using a bluetooth keyboard, but other than that, we seem to be on the same page. A professional blogger is not a video editor, but again, that's back to car/truck.

I think it’s possible to use an iPad as one’s primary device for professional-level content creation. Actually, scratch that. I’m positive it’s possible–because I’ve been doing it for the past three months, and I’ve been having a really good time.

This hasn’t been one of those experiments-for-the-sake-of-experimentation in which someone temporarily forsakes a PC for another device in order to write about the experience (like, say, this). No, I’ve been using the iPad for my daily activities–running Technologizer, writing for TIME, CNET, and AllBusiness.com, and more–because I find it to be the preferable tool in multiple respects. I’ve been using it about 80 percent of the time, and using my MacBook Air about 20 percent of the time. I have no desire to go back.

If this startles you, I understand. It seems to startle most folks who notice I’m doing it. I’m startled myself. Or at least I was at first–at this point, I’ve been doing it long enough that I forget there’s anything unusual about it until someone reminds me.

I still need a truck at home for a few things, but 95% of my usage is done on the iPad now. Given another year or two of iterations and advancements, I think the 5% could disappear. Will I still need a truck in my home in 2 years? I'm starting to doubt it.

Question:
I think I got a problem, because no sound is coming out of my iPad 1 within apps.
I just tried testing it out with the text tones and it works perfectly, so it's not a hardware problem.

But all sound is lost in apps. Everything from sound in games to the keyboard presses.
I even tried restarting the device, but there's still no sound.

Why is that?

You turned on mute, either through the hardware switch or the software button in the app tray, depending on which way you have it set.

We are pretty much on the same page as you with our iPad 2. Our laptop got turned on a week ago for the first time in well over a month, and it was only so that my wife could create our family Christmas cards to mail out. Took her about 1hr, and the laptop has been off ever since.

I can easily see that within 5-10yrs, a tablet being the only computer we need in our house. Again, this is for personal use only. But I'm sure I'll buy my daughter a traditional PC for her schoolwork.

In some ways I see tablets as laptops 2.0, but ofcourse laptops are still more capable. I still go back to my laptop for things the iPad doesn't yet support, like my internet bank and some games.

While I do agree the iPad is technically a computer, it's more like a computer permanently set in demo mode. It needs to be properly unleashed.

If the iPad is a car, then a computer must be an F22. It might pass as a scooter and that's okay, if you don't need more to cruise around, but a car? I don't think so.

what do you do on your computer?

what do you believe the majority of people do on their computers?

what common computing tasks can the iPad not do?

what specialized computing tasks can the ipad not do?

How does mobility and battery life offset the things the iPad can't do?

The iPad will not replace a laptop or desktop for everyone (it won't for me) but there is going to be much less need for those larger machines for all but the most specialized, complex tasks.

This comment makes no sense, even as a troll. As I said, I can do 95% of my normal usage as is. That's not demo mode. That's a functional computer.

If you want to say the traditional computer is an F22, than that just further reinforces my argument.

That just means you never really needed a full fledged computer(like most people).

No, it means I wanted a fully fledged computer that's easy to maintain and secure, in a superior form factor for my usage.

Photoshop.

Photoshop is not a common task. It's a specialized professional application. The average computer user couldn't afford it, let alone know how to use it.

I think you meant specialized task.

and for the most common photoshop tasks - like cropping, red eye reduction and image color adjustment, so you can email pics to friends, there are plenty of apps that do this job.

Even the built in photo edit features on iOS 5 can handle that. Plus there are other apps for more dedicated photo editing. Granted, I don't see a professional photographer giving up a full photo suite on their iMac for this, but for a majority of people, it's just fine.

But your pad can't even save files to itself. What's up with that?
What files do you mean specifically? I can save pdfs and email docs....but yeah I mean, I don't sit here and wish I could download exe files to iPad. iPad does what it does very well, but there is always a place for desktops and/or laptops.

?

e: Or when the Verge launched.

Aren't you using an iPad 1? I get that you're cranky about it, but you can't tell us we're wrong when our hardware is twice as powerful as yours. And the hardware could be twice as powerful again each year for the foreseeable future.

If I create a document in Pages, it saves to itself just fine.

A computer with crazy amounts of geebees doesn't discriminate file types.

A pad, understandably, does.

verge hasn't crashed my iPhone 4, ipad 2 or the iphone 4S.

I suppose the 256 MB in the iPad 1 rears its ugly head? I know it had problems loading all of "The Big Picture" for me back when I first got the ipad

In time, edge cases like this will continue to disappear. the big idea of the ipad is still very important and that was nailed with revision 1. later versions can improve the speed, battery life, screen tech, whatever. the fundamental concept of how to interact with the thing is still the most important thing and that's why the car/truck analogy works.

More people will be able to do most (or all)of what they need to do on an ipad and will choose to do so because they will prefer the UI, size, weight and battery over a computer that might do a couple of those things faster.

I do, but that shouldn't matter. Or is the computer argument only valid when we're talking about the iPad 2? If not, then excuse me, I'm gonna upgrade my computer iPad. brb

It matters when the points you bring up are related to hardware that is rapidly evolving, and not the concept, as LC said. What issues do you have that are inherent in the iPad concept versus a traditional computer?

Copernicus has taken issue with the fundamental change in user accessible file management, for example.

It's a matter of degrees, I guess. I mean, I don't want to seem hypocritical - I still use my iMac more than my iPad. But I use the iPad for more things than I thought I would when I first got it.

But I'm on the computer A LOT.

There are a ton of people who use computers less who would be perfectly happy with the iPad 1 as their main computer. And the idea of the iPad being the "best computer they own" would make sense as it doesn't need to be administrated, doesn't get viruses, lasts 10 hours on battery, etc.

So, yeah I still think the iPad as car and the computer as truck is valid - even in these real early days. maybe the ipad 1 is more of a smart car and the trunk is too small...

Proprietary file type creation is not a change in user accessible file management.

It's literally ignoring user accessible file management.

Your data should never be dependent on an application.

photoforge 2 has replaced photoshop for quick edits, color correction and general grading for me. so much more intuitive and easier to use than photoshop. I've got the camera connection kit hooked up to edit RAW and post online in a snap. iPad is the future.

I understand the sentiment, but I think the gains made in making file management easier (essentially invisible) is worth it for the majority of people.

Folks like us will still be able to get in there and get our files out.

There are also a ton of people who are perfectly happy with a scooter as their only vehicle. They wouldn't need a car.

But yeah, maybe the iPad is more something like an electric vehicle (with longer battery life than actual EVs).

I have to say, I use my iPad every day since I got it. It's the best manga reader I've ever used, it's the best Google Reader I've ever used (wouldn't use GR at all, if it wasn't for Reeder), it's my favorite alarm clock/radio, but whenever I want to do something else, like listening to my music or browse the web (lol), it gets in the way. While the gestures made multitasking less horrible, I still don't like it, the mail app sucks balls, the app store is a terrible experience and that's it. I don't even want it to replace my computer, but even if I wanted to and had an iPad 2, I couldn't. Maybe my view on this will change, when I get an iPad 3.

Can a tablet replace a desktop/laptop?
Yes e.g. Modbook or any Windows 7 tablet.

Can an OS utilizing a touch-only interface replace an OS utilizing a keyboard+mouse/trackpad?
Not yet, perhaps never.

Can any of the existing mobile OS replace a desktop OS?
iOS, webOS — No!
Android (ICS), Windows 8 — I think so.

A friend of mine is going to New York and I'm thinking of asking him to pick up an iPad 2 since I would save a lot of money because of the €-$ exchange rate. Question is, is there any sort of region lock or problem with software that I should be aware of or is it all the same? Apple's warranty works worldwide right?

Of course it can, depending on your needs. That's the answer in every scenario: Yes, depending on your needs.
