Apple iPad 2 |OT|

You read comics on your phone in portrait mode? It's so much easier to read in landscape and just scroll down. That zoom box seems neat, but I couldn't see myself seriously using something like that, tbh.

PS. I can't wait to read comics on iPad 3's retina display. :D The wait for CZ or any reader to support retina is gonna me killer.

there shouldn't be any wait. if the images in the cbr are already hi res, they should just show up on the screen perfectly. the only problem would be if the app does some futzing around during the transfer. I know CZ used to do stuff like that (main reason why i stopped using it) but plenty of readers just show you the original file with no extra scaling or processing.

i wonder if the comics that they sell on various comic stores on the ipad are already a high resolution. I think they are since they look clean when they do that auto zoom thing.

I hope so, but i'm not sure how the readers work with scaling their images so who knows if it'll be that smooth.

Anyone else hoping for the new model to be magnetic on the back so the smart cover will sit flat against it?
Supposedly it will be backwards compatible with smart covers and a bunch of other cases.

It's rumored to be only slightly (millimeters) thicker due to the upgraded specs.

Not really, it was designed to be easily detachable for this reason. The only time you'd want it flat against the back is if you're resting it against a surface that you're worried might scratch it, in which case it'll be flat anyway. I don't see why anyone would want to hold an iPad in their hands for extended periods with a heavy cover like that when it is so easy to remove.

Back when I was using comicflow, there was zero scaling. I had a couple really large images that made the ipad chug. And I remember that zooming in on them revealed all the same detail as on the desktop.

I figure more powerful guts in pad 3 will take care of the chugginess on the high res images.

My other hope/ concern is that the Adobe periodicals platform changes a bit. Creating hi res, mostly static images of each page is an awfully inefficient way of using this screen and will eat up tons of MB. plus all current issues will still look low res unless they re-"print" them.

I can deal with some of this stuff now but it would still be better if they could use iOS's native text rendering to get benefits of accessibility and higher res rendering on the new screen. there needs to be a less MB heavy way of creating these mags.

Adonit should be releasing a new pen for the Jot series including a digitizer soon. It'll have bluetooth, rechargeable batteries and pressure sensitivity! too which would make it better than this iPen.
Doesn't use a digitizer, still relying on the capacitive part for input, but using the Bluetooth (and whatever internal pressure sensor) to do the palm rejection.
Wow, that's awesome. Didn't know there were other similar technologies out there. Does it work across a bunch of apps as iPen does?
There are a few, I wouldn't be surprised if they were all the exact same OEM product. Just search for iPad pen digitizer and you'll see the iPen and others show up. Whether they'll work with the iPen apps is a question though, even if they're exactly the same hardware they could use some BS like a unique identifier to be exclusive or something.

I am pretty sure iPad 2 was hard to find in stores for about a month or two. I would expect the same or worse for ipad 3.

easiest way to buy one would just be to order from apple's website when they go on sale then chill and wait the week or more until it ships out.

It was like 4 months I think

Best way to get one if you are not a fan of running around to stores is to pre-order at the Apple Store, or failing that, order when you are ready to get one. It will take a week or two, but you won't have to mess around running around to stores, or calling all the time, waiting for availability.

Buy a smart cover? :p

OR, jailbreak and install a tweak that's called something like 'noUnlock', might be wrong on that name though, but there's something out there.
Alright, I'll check Cydia. I hope there is something. The lock screen on the ipad is stupid, useless and annoying. Especially when you want to use it as your remote.

One thing to keep in mind with NoLockScreen, if you have the screen off with no Smart Cover on and you receive a push notification, it will turn on your screen and automatically open the app.

To avoid this make sure View in Lock Screen is set to Off in the settings menu for each app.

I've never sold an iDevice before, but I sold my iPad 2. What do I need to do to get it totally wiped? Just do a restore in iTunes? Also, do I need to do anything special to disassociate it with my account?

Yeah, the lock screen really should be optional for the iPad. It was invented to prevent pocket dialing, but has no real use for most people on a tablet. Only as protection for certain situations so make it an option.

you don’t even need to hook it up to iTunes.

go to settings > general > reset

pick the “erase all content and settings” option. this is a 100% full wipe and will present the next user with the initial ipad setup screen like they just brought it back from the store. all your documents, photos and settings will be gone.

I doubt it's a 100% wipe, it doesn't take very long.
Took forever on my old iPhone 3G. I've heard it's faster on newer devices cause the hardware encryption, i.e. it just wipes the encryption key and all the data is effectively wiped at that point. Well technically it's there but without the key it's just garbage data.

bingo. the use of the key means they can just wipe the key, get the setup screen active and that’s it.

took a few minutes on my ipad.

and I’ve done it before on an old iPhone 4 and its just as effective.

l wish there was a way you could password protect the settings app. My seven y/o son spends more time messing around in there than he does playing games or watching videos :/

You could always jailbreak and just get the tweak that lets you password-lock specific apps/folders.

I'm having a rather odd bug with the Facebook app at the moment.

For some reason the chat bar on the right is only showing new friends. So right now it only lists 2 people as being available for chat, with zero others available. Both people are friends I only added in the past week or two.

Anyone have this issue in the past?

Since we were on the comic discussion a bit earlier, I just saw this on facebook:

WHAT?! How long has this been going on? Checking iTunes and I see a bunch of stuff, and I'm thinking of pre-ordereding "Marvels" too (want my sis to read it);

Even The New Avengers #1 is up there for free. How usable is iBooks as a comic reader? I can't imagine it being that great, but if so, I hope they just make it better and better.

Just noticed that the top section of my browser has burnt into my screen and is visible on the lock screen.

Hopefully no one notices when I try and sell it.

? take a screenshot or a picture, I've never seen that before

Tried taking a pic with my phone, can't really make it out. I'll see if I can find a background image that helps.

Edit. Really can't get a picture that it is noticeable on..

I just got a damn iPad for Christmas from my wife anyway...this isn't a MAJOR upgrade anyway I'm assuming so I'm happy with mine still <3.

iPad 2 is a wonderful machine. You won't notice the new processor, and I'm not sure retina is worth it. Let's first see what they come up with.

Keeping my iPad 2. Yes. For sure.

I get that. You can't take a screenshot, because it's an artifact of the hardware. Like very brief residual screen burn in.

I notice it if I have been browsing for a short while, then I switch to something dark! But nor black - it use to happen on my pulse news app which has a dark get splash screen. Opening that after safari, I can make the URL bar and google box.

User_nat, is your lock screen fairly dark?

Pretty much black.

Try running some sort of strobing .gif animation over the affected area to get rid of the image retention?

edit: Try playing this video, expand to full screen and zoom the video to get full coverage (seizure warning):

Leaving it running for a good wile, rewind as needed.

Apart from making me near blind, that does seem to work pretty well.

Another idea I had is to just flip it around at get use to the button being on the other side. Give that side of the screen a little rest.

It actually goes away after a minute or so. From my Internet travels, some of the screens get it. I reckon it's probably pretty common, but most people don't notice.

Certainly doesn't go away after a minute. It's there when I turn it on in the morning. Not as noticeable, but there (you would have to be looking for it fairly hard).

Sold my 64GB 3G iPad 2 for $700 and my Mums 32GB 3G iPad 1 for this weekend.

Not bad.

Well of course it'd be on first thing, as you haven't used the screen... I meant after a minute or so of use. It sounds like yours is phaps a bit more prominent an mine.

If you have good eye-sight is totally is.
the only case you could be making for this if it takes long for app developers to convert their apps into retina, which is why I will personally be sitting it out until the iPad 4.

I agree about the apps, but I might not wait that long.

I don't have to jump day one since I only got my first ipad 1 after flipping an HP touchpad, and upgraded that to an ipad 2 around christmas.

Thank you iPad 3. Because of you coming out soon, I just picked up a 64 GB WiFi iPad 2 in immaculate condition for $500. Thank you so much.

New update seems to have helped a lot with battery life, I just watched a local channel's TV stream at full brightness/sound, web browsed, viewed photos, etc, etc, and it only just changed to 99%. Any hope of getting it jailbroken soon?

Can anyone recommend a good office app, mostly want something word-like. It doesn't have to be 100% professional like Pages which is a bit expensive (for my needs, it seems to be worth that much) but I also don't want it completely plain like many of the cheap/free apps. I'd like decent text editing and the ability to at the very least do things like bullets and more importantly insert tables and maybe shapes and stuff to make diagrams etc instead of just text while taking class notes. Intuitive, pretty & cheap.
