So what you would like is a shopping cart added to the App Store/iTunes Store apps, not multitasking. That's fair, but simultaneous downloads probably wouldn't be allowed due to performance issues.
See what badcrumble stated.
They don't download at the same time.

Charred may be onto something though with buying less if you see a grand total though. ;-)

App management on the device could be better (there is a jailbreak tweak, Multi-icon Mover, which does just that) but I can't for the life understand why we should be managing the placement of apps in the first place. Do most folks spend time on their Mac or PC arranging apps in the different folders? Can someone please explain to me how the necessity of app arranging in Springboard, and now Launchpad, is a sign of progress?

Yes, I think most people prefer to have things where they want them as opposed to where they're first placed.

I don't mind yielding control of placement to automated processes (I like how Windows 7 puts the most used programs in the Start Menu, for example, although the user can override its choices) but I'd be pretty peeved if everything was just strewn about.

I'm not totally anal about how my iPad apps are laid out, but if I'm playing a few games I want those to be on the first page along with communications and banking apps.

Really, really, really hard.
depends on where you are and where you go. I've heard from multiple people that there are stores around Houston with 10 or more ipad 2's.

Why you are telling me this? Since you are the second person saying this I'll just let you know: I know that. You would still prefer downloading on iTunes over your mobile device in the event of a multiple app purchase.

I guess it doesn't matter - it is what it is. I just feel like Apple could be handling this a lot better. I have my ipad 2, so I'm not a sore would-be owner, but I think Apple should be more forthcoming with information.

I don't understand the need to release it so early. Were they trying to get ahead of something? Why not sit back for a couple of weeks and build up an inventory? It seems to me that they just wanted to create an event with the bizarre release times and the fact that you couldn't reserve the item.

You can say this about any product that sells well.

There isn't unlimited warehouse space and shipping resources.

Competition is the need. Now it's out there, making waves and eclipsing the Xoom.

I'm suffering waiting for my iPad too, but it seems ludicrous to delay a release just to build up millions of units. If they sold 500K this weekend through retail, I'd say that's plenty of inventory for a launch. It's also not "so early" in this infancy of tablet computing. Competition is (well, will be) fierce, and some think yearly updates are too far apart for a sector seeing so much growth.

Can someone please explain to me how the necessity of app arranging in Springboard, and now Launchpad, is a sign of progress?
You see no value in putting your most frequently used apps on page 1 instead of say, randomly placed throughout several pages? Or grouping apps by functionality?

They provided a million already, reports have said, so it's not like they only released a few thousand units. And getting out before HP, Xoom et al was probably very important for Apple.

Just saw this on AI.

related to inventory

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/03/16/apple_rethinks_inventory_management_for_ipad_2.html

Apple has changed its inventory management policy for iPad 2 deliveries, having its retail stores hold on to new shipments until the next day in an effort to ease the sales process for both customers and employees, AppleInsider has learned.

A person familiar with Apple's retail operations informed AppleInsider this week that the new shipment of iPad 2 stock sold by some stores on Tuesday was actually delivered on Monday. Apple is said to have elected to hold the inventory for a next-day sale to grant its inventory control specialists the time to "calmly and accurately" process new shipments.

It was suggested that the change could be a "lesson learned" following the launch of major in-demand products in 2010: the iPhone 4 and first-generation iPad. For those launches, Apple's reservation system was said to have been plagued by a myriad of problems, including technical glitches that caused reservations to disappear, and resellers attempting to "game" the system.

Apple's previous strategy was to get products from the pallet to the shelf as fast as possible. But that approach was said to have caused "utter havoc" for Apple's retail employees, and led to inventory inaccuracies.

Hmm... How come Apple won't recognize my credit card anymore? It's the correct information they got, but now I can't update apps or download anything. Could it have anything to do with me signing up as a developer to get gestures?

Shit, I work right by there.

Are they not doing the reserves for next shipments like they did with the iPad1? That is how I got mine last year around launch time.

To anyone here who's done any iPad development, what's a safe SLOC estimation for a simple say "Grocery List" type app? How much of it does the SDK generate for you vs. hand coded lines? Thanks.

I can't remember if there are any Best Buys or anything near Farmington...isn't there one in Bloomfield? Or around Hartford somewhere?

You can't find it in stock anywhere, though, aside from the Apple store?

so how common is this light bleeding issue?

i'd hate to receive my new shiny ipad only to have to bring it to an apple store to get replaced on the same day. =\

Targets don't have it in stock, Best Buy's website seems to indicate that it's no longer in stock anywhere... I dunno. I work from 8:30-4:30, which makes it pretty tough to swoop in and grab one at the Apple Store in the morning.

I stopped at the Apple Store yesterday morning and they had a sign up saying 'we're out, but ask us how you can get one tomorrow'. So, I asked one of the people there about it and he said to call back around 5pm and check. Didn't make sense to me at the time, but now it does.

I never called, but I did put down my $100 deposit at Best Buy on a 16GB white wifi. The employee there said that the reservation list was growing by the hour, but said that the model that I wanted had a pretty short list.

There is a Best Buy directly across the street from West Farms, and a Target just down the road from it. All the Best Buys in CT I went to never had any, nor any on display. I haven't looked at Target yet.

But that's how it is right now by default. Apps are dumped willy nilly on springboard or launchpad and then the user has to organize them in pages and folders to get some semblance of order. Then some moronic developer requests that the app be first deleted for an update, like The Daily app suggested the other week, requiring another mundane hold, tap & drag operation on my behalf. Why?

Does anybody really sit in front of their computer, open up their applications folder, switch to grid view and then start fiddling with the position of each application, just for the joy of it? Yet here we are discussing the best way to do so on our phones. The computer is great at automatically arranging and organizing stuff. I can request that it put a new app in a games folder when installing. It can list a group of apps alphabetically, by date installed, by date last opened, by any other rule we think up. I can search for 'games' on my computer and get a result with all such apps on my system. The grid of icons on Springboard and Launchpad is prehistoric in comparison.

people really need to learn how to use spotlight. it's probably the most intuitive way to launch an app if you're the pack-rat-app type. IMO

I think a lot of people are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I'm not saying there isn't a bleeding "issue" with some of these ipad 2s - there definitely is - but when they post pictures of it, it just seems so minor that I, personally, would never think to return a unit just for that issue.

You still need to use Springboard and organize your apps because the icon is an important part of notifications. Communication apps, news apps, games etc need to be put in a spot easy to check, so that the badge on the icon isn't missed. I'd rant about that too but I'm done for the day.
Time to buy some apps to make me feel better

iOS already has two additional methods to view your apps, and they both work great. You can easily look at a list ordered by last opened, and a search.

ipad 2 out for delivery. finally. this is coming from someone who ordered before 1AM last week.

I would hope most of the midnight buyers get their iPads by week's end. If you had the acuity to do that you deserve it.

Am I the only one that thinks Apple needs to really take advantage of the screen real estate of the iPad for iOS 5?

The home screen can't look just like the iPhones - just spread out. I'm sure they can take advantage of it a lot more.

true, you have a point. however this isn't a problem for me personally because i filter out my apps on a regular basis and just delete the stuff i don't use. so i never have more than 2 pages.

but there's a lot of app hoarder mentality out there so i can only imagine how crazy and unorganized some folks' springboard must look!

Not happening for a lot of us. I ordered at 12:58 and it's not even being prepped for shipment. Apple seriously underestimated demand, I think.

It's not minor. My wife noticed it on her own as a problem as soon as she turned it on with no knowledge at all that is was common.

That's the most recent update? It's been over a year since the first rumors went round. I'll believe it when I see it.

Microsoft demoed it on stage. What's not to believe? It detects an iOS device and automatically serves an iOS compatible stream.

Because it sounded like you didn't understand.

And no, I don't like making my App purchases on the computer as I like the avoid getting to my computer, booting it, loading iTunes, purchasing, then syncing to iPad. It's very rare that I do.

I've done multiple app purchases many times on my iPad and iPhone in the past, the extra hoop of jumping back to the App Store and searching for the other Apps, is the only annoying thing about the process.
Adding a "cart" would be a dream come true.

Yeah, except that the article says beta in Spring while Microsoft has publicly announced that Silverlight is coming to WP7 in the Fall—and there are rumors claiming that update will be delayed till next year. If you meant just video streaming then *shrug* yeah that shouldn't be a problem and it can be done server side without any discussion with Apple. Getting the Silverlight plugin on iOS, even if it is good and ready, I won't be believe until I see it.

HELP!!!! my iPad is still naked. I need a nice case. There aren't that many choices yet but there has to be a good one out there. I'm about to go and buy a Griffey one cuz I don't want to ruin my new pad :(

I think it's alright. Simple enough the. Buttons are finger sized. And the spacing means yo u get to wipe pages (accessing the ui/interface) and it just works.

Decided to get a 64gb 3G in Australia again. Can't wait

Man, I forgot how much itunes sucks when you're setting up a new device. I try just to put music on it, it dumps on a crapload of apps I didn't want to put on it. I put the apps I want on it, it deletes all my music. Ugh.

No, I agree. It's one of the main reasons I was let down with the iPad 2 announcement and why I changed my mind from getting one at launch to waiting it out to see what they announce in iOS5 or what the competition comes out with until then. I really hate that the iPad is held back cuz of the iPhone.

I strongly suspect that iOS 5 is going to be a very, very nice leap forward for the iPad.

just a heads up, I did some preliminary testing between the motorola xoom and ipad 2. stuff like web browsing, camera quality and youtube playback. so far I'm quite surprised; things are a lot closer then I would have thought. as soon as I write everything up and get the videos uploaded (as well as get more testing done ), I will post in here for everyone to see.

Honestly, I think they just wanted to get it on sale ASAP without sufficient stocks. I think they felt just enough pressure that they wanted to say it's on sale next week instead of next month.
It's because they're all going to Hong Kong (though I think I also saw some Eastern European/Russians and Indians/Pakistanis too, though). This time around, Apple's not trying to control this (which sucks, but they were skewered for it, both here and in the press). Apple accepts cash now, doesn't require an Apple ID, and they let people make multiple trips (though they still limit it to 2 per trip).
