Yep, because Apple Care is not returns--it's standard warranty service. Like if there was a problem with your Samsung device, you can return it to Best Buy OR get it fixed by Samsung. The nice thing about Apple Care is that you usually don't need to ship your stuff to some warranty service center--the service center is at the Apple Store.

Yah but that means I have to go to an Apple store in Chicago. And isn't the replacement a refurb (assuming they have any by then)?

No, Apple stores hold a certain quantity of each model as "DOA stock". These are not refurbs or retail packaged iPads.

Just got off the phone with Target and they have an OG ipad 16gb with 3g for 529.99. If i am mainly going to be using it for a web browser and streaming data from my desktop should I jump in? Or would the difference in browsing with the ipad2 be worth the wait and difficulty to acquire one? The plan would be to get the OG now and then ipad 3 when it comes out. I don't really care that much about gaming on it.
I wouldn't bother for that price unless you really really want 3G and can't afford $629 for a new one. At that price I'd much rather have a new 16GB wifi model. I'd only look at an older one at under $400, ideally closer to $300.

I've said it many times before, the biggest thing that's bugged me about the original is the speed in everything other than games. It's not horrible, but if you plan to use it a lot the speed may bug you a lot.

Apple's refurbs are like new, there's a reason people hold out for their refurbs. They're cheap and just as good as a new one but come in a brown box.

I definitely wouldn't want to pay 529 for an original iPad. IMO if it's any more than $399, you'll be happier with iPad 2.

I'm nervous that I'm waiting for my iPad to arrive at my house only to be disappointed with excessive backlight bleeding, forcing me to go to an Apple Store anyway to get it switched.

Have many of you returned/replaced yours already?

Is it going away as time goes on?

I thought I would make a big deal out of it, but seriously it's never noticeable under regular use, I can only see it on a black screen, in a pitch black room.

Got my 64GB black today!

Oh wow.... it does feel really nice in your hands. I didn't think I'd like he curves so much.
And the weight loss, though subtle, is wonderful.
SO THIN!

So much faster, I love it!
Everything loads much more quickly. Doing side by sides and there's no contest (still have my iPad 1 for now)

Loaded up one of my physics simulators, filled both screens with "water" and splashed them around.
Older iPad chugs and plays at ~15fps, the iPad 2 doesn't skip a beat and stays a perfect 60fps.

The 1st gen 16gb Ipad is $349 on the Apple refurb store. That is pretty tempting.
I got mine for $398 (AU) and it still felt like good value. Don't regret it at all. Mine was new, but I'd imagine a refurb is just as good.

Don't think I've noticed this mentioned on reviews, but the iPad 2 screen can get dimmer than the old one. Not as dark as the iPhone 4, but still noticeably darker than the iPad 1. The auto brightness also seems to have more range and activity to it, sort of like the iPhone 4, like it'll actually change brightness a noticeable amount if the lighting conditions change enough...vs not doing much in the original.

I don't get it. Why is it, even now with multi-tasking finally in place since 3.0, that when installing an app, it still takes you to the home screen? Thus forcing you to go back INTO the app in order to continue shopping. Why not just do it like Android and have it download in the background with an icon in the status bar that signifies something's downloading.

I hope iOS 5 fixes this.

iOS really doesn't do multi tasking. But yeah, it's pretty lame that it kicks you to the desktop. That's one reason I tend to get all of my apps via iTunes instead of on the iPad or iPhone themselves.

Cause people are stupid and need to be explicitly shown where their fancy new app is landing. I find it annoying too but it's not without reason.

Speaking of annoying things, how many others have found games with capped framerates? I've only found a few but it looks like RAGE and Monkey Ball 2 (the iPad one) are capped around 30.

On the plus side Star Wars Falcon Gunner AR mode is awesome on iPad 2 just cause the sheer size over the iPhone. Granted it looks like shit cause the pixel doubled graphics and crappy camera, but the size makes up for it.

Well it does, it's just not the traditional free for all type. There are rules, and iOS rules it's available resources with an iron fist.

Yeah, that's about the stupidest grievance with iOS I've ever heard.

App Store is a system app. it could multitask as much as Apple wants it to. Just like the phone or mail app. the multitasking restrictions are only for App Store apps.

Yeah it does. You can download apps while running others. Switching to the Home Screen is obviously a leftover quirk from the pre-multitasking days.

iOS is still OS X in a way. It can do multitasking. It's just the end user sees it in a different way. Music can play in the background because of it. Downloading can happen in the background because of it. It's obviously just leftover as there's really no reason to close App Store to download the app.

Unless they really think people need to know exactly where on the home screen the app will be going. In which case they could fix this by simply flashing the icon the next time you do go to the home screen.

It's not a quirk from the old ways, because Apple apps could always do special stuff. I bet Apple thinks of it as a feature. :P
I bet if enough people threw up a fuss, they would make it a option to change in settings, like the lock screen orientation.

There's two kinds of multitasking. The kind Apple has for App Store apps where you see one at a time but they can run services, and real multitasking which is reserved to certain OS processes like the music handler and the download handler and the phone handler, Wi-Fi handler, basically everything that needs to run in order for the device to work. These are all running at once. Apple only restricts the front end as a way to keep the system from being overloaded with apps all running at once even when they're not showing and taking away from the illusion of the OS by giving people bad experiences (Due to a memory hogging app killing the battery) and causing them to blame the platform.

I've seen this problem on Android. Too many applications and your battery dies in 5 hours or your system becomes too slow. Full multitasking on a portable device like a phone or tablet is not good. These devices don't have the same huge batteries laptops have. So they have to conserve power as best as they can. It's not good for battery or processes.

These are the reasons Apple is so bent on keeping full multitasking and holds a tight reign over what apps go on the device. To preserve the user experience.

Well congratulations sir. Enjoy!

It does suck when I have multiple apps to purchase.

It already has an 'update all', would love a 'checkout all'.
fwiw there is tweak for jailbroken iDevices to enable appstore downloads in the background.

Cheap shot. I've seen this problem on iOS too. Friends asking me why their iPhone is dying so quickly and they've got a couple email accounts on their phone set to push, left bluetooth and the gps on, push notifications for all those services, wifi constantly searching in the background and then the screen brightness on the highest. *shrug* I point them to Apple's battery saving tips and call it a day. At least on android, there is a feature to tell you what's using up the battery life.

In general I feel like app management is still better done on the PC than on the device itself and that's a hurdle Apple should work on fixing or improving at least. I'd rather buy, download, update, delete, add, and reorder apps on my PC.

Now, because I'm normally mobile, I end up doing it on the devices, but I just mean if I have the option between the two, the PC wins every time.

If there was a 'checkout all' feature there would be a lot less purchasing of apps. I blank out the total cost when downloading apps but that'd be very hard when there is a second confirm point with a $20+ bill.

App management on the device could be better (there is a jailbreak tweak, Multi-icon Mover, which does just that) but I can't for the life understand why we should be managing the placement of apps in the first place. Do most folks spend time on their Mac or PC arranging apps in the different folders? Can someone please explain to me how the necessity of app arranging in Springboard, and now Launchpad, is a sign of progress?

My Wife's has horrible backlight bleeding as reported (she actually mentioned it to me it was so bad). Is Apple replacing these units?

Just got me a 64GB was going to purchase one off of somebody but decided to give my local Target a call and they got some in this am. Sadly I too got Backlight bleeding though. Oh well Ill take care of it when stores get more in stock not really that noticeable.

yea my coworker and i did some comparisons yesterday. We started the weather channel app and mine was loaded into the radar while his was still showing splash screens. pretty big difference.

I haven't really been paying attention to the iPad 2 at all but just recently been interested. How hard is it actually to find one in stores right now?

It's not counterproductive if their goal is to produce lines for the news cameras.

I asked the guy where I got mine and he was telling me that they are getting no number from corporate all they see is one shipment of iPads but it doesn't say how many are coming in that shipment or what kind. Don't know the truth to this but who knows, when a hot new crazy must have item like this comes out store tend to mend and break some of their own rules just to get that sale.

What would be more effective for Apple:

1 - showing lines of people each day, waiting for an iPad 2

2 - announcing they they sold over 2 million iPad 2s in a single weekend

So what you would like is a shopping cart added to the App Store/iTunes Store apps, not multitasking. That's fair, but simultaneous downloads probably wouldn't be allowed due to performance issues.

I wasn't talking about supply issues, I was talking about the fact that the stores don't know which models or how many come in each shipment. They clearly have a low supply and I agree with you that there's no way that that's artificial/intentional; however, as long as they know they're going to sell every iPad basically as soon as it hits a store, they might as well keep the stores from knowing what's going to arrive since that (a) speeds up and simplifies shipping and (b) means that people will be lining up constantly every morning without even knowing whether anything's gonna arrive.

One Apple employee I talked to said it was a security measure, so no one knows which truck has what. I'm not sure I believe that.

You can download a bunch of apps at once if you're updating them; they just download one at a time, but it only takes pressing the "Update All" button and typing in your password.

I still don't understand how that speeds up and simplifies shipping and what benefit it is to Apple to have people line up. At this point, everyone knows that the iPad 2 is a hit and everyone wants it. Showing lines of people every in the news every day just isn't happening.

I guess it doesn't matter - it is what it is. I just feel like Apple could be handling this a lot better. I have my ipad 2, so I'm not a sore would-be owner, but I think Apple should be more forthcoming with information.
