Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I bought the Nav app. It's fine, but it's missing a few vital features (can't change the colours, as far as I can tell) and it's just not as comfortable as clicking about.

Ah well.

A Sandy Bridge + Thunderbolt update is coming any day now!

And by any day I mean any day...within the next 3-4 months, so yeah just buy it. To save some money you could look into Amazon to save on tax, or perhaps the Apple refurb store (just watch out for the older models).
Ah thanks for the tip; didn't even think to use Amazon but I'll get it there actually. Wish they had the 4GB models but not a dealbreaker I suppose.

Has anyone tried the Photoshop companion apps?

I really want to, but alas I'm stuck on CS4 for the time being. I'm especially interested in the Nav app. Having the toolbar available on the iPad would be really nice to free up some screen space.

Why would it need 2gb of ram? Sounds like e-penis competition.
My iPad 2 still refreshes Safari tabs like there's no tomorrow, and I only ever have a few open at a time. It's insanely bad. Closing other programs alleviates this, but Jobs said I shouldn't have to worry about that!

Sorry for the noobie question, but just to check - does iPad have any multi-user support? Like, can you set up different user accounts for one ipad, with their own settings, history, etc? Just wondering if these are 'shareable', or if Apple subscribes to a one-user-per-ipad philosophy. Thanks!

nope. nothing at all.

I'm afraid not, no.

So I finally caved and bought the iPad smart cover. My main issue with it is when I lay it down in landscape mode the cover doesn't prop it up enough. The angle isn't quite perfect. Any tips for fixing this?

Went ahead and got the 4GB ubermodel at the Apple Store (I'm such a sucker for a little extra power). Was nice to get the illicit student discount too.

By ubermodel do you mean the 11" 11.6GHz / 4GB RAM / 128GB SSD model? I got that one a couple months back and couldn't be happier with it.

Niice. Yeah I have one friend with an Air and even just online it seems like people love it as long as you can live with the cost (i.e. place a high enough value on superportability). This one is actually 13" 4GB 256 2.13 ghz. I don't really need the 256 but it's cool I'll find a way to fill it up thatswhathesaid.

I need to be able to send my resume off from my ipad on the go... maybe make some edits as well. What's the best word processor for iOS?

I will never forgive you for not doing a live unboxing for us, AstroLad.
hah i actually unboxed it in the store. it's sitting here next to me all pretty and updated now. got steam on there and was genuinely surprised at how many games in my library has mac versions. i don't really want to taint it with ms office but i'll probably have to

I don't think I'll ever get used to the UI but Office 2011 really isn't too bad. I mostly only use Word though so for all I know PowerPoint and Excel could be absolute shit.

Keyboard shortcuts for life.

But the open items view is kinda nice for navigating if you are a maximize only kind of user like myself. Its just the beginning though, will be some cool additions in the future and the SDK should open it up for users to create things that the PS team hasn't even thought about.

Eazel and lava are pretty fun, and I have even used Eazel when sitting with client to talk about color schemes.

What happened to the initially reported $20 annual subscription to the New Yorker? It turns out that $60 is the cheapest sub, which is not going to bring in many new subscribers. Including me.

yeah that quote was too general and it looks like it refers to only some monthly magazines, not the weekly New Yorker.

60 bucks is still cheaper than the print price so it's not a ripoff, imo but it's not the kind of amazing deal we may have hoped.

i got a monthly subscription (6 bucks) to try it out for a little bit. I didn't want to drop 60 bucks on it in one shot, either

seems like this might actually be a nice companion to my wacom. would have to tweak my workflow a bit, but i may have to try this out. thanks for the heads up

guys i have an ipad 2 camera question. i was spending time copying notes from a textbook to my ipad the other day, and it occurred to me that it might be way easier just to take photos of the relevant page sections, and create my own streamlined textbook in muji notebook/penultimate/pages/similar app. i know the camera is terrible for taking nice pictures, but can it at least render readable text at 1:1ish size?

Finally got a white 64gb version yesterday, so sexy. :3

Out of curiosity, has anybody here been using iPads on an enterprise level and if so, how are you implementing them? Our IT department at the hospital I work at bought around 50 iPad 1s a couple months ago and they haven't been used yet. I partly blame short staffing, but I really think they are rather shortsighted in how they should be applied.

You could try using Evernote. I've only tried the phone version, but it lets you take pictures of notes, then uses OCR to make your notes searchable after the fact. Pretty slick, and it even works with handwritten notes.

I didn't see this in OP.

About to buy an ipad any day now.

99% of the time we'll be using wifi for its connection...but every so often, if we don't have that available... being able to get the data plan for like only a month at a time might be nice (like when we're traveling).

Is this possible? Getting the data plan when you need it for a short period of time without commitments? If so, is it available through both AT&T and Verizon and if so, how much?

Thanks.

The data plan is a no commitment, month-to-month plan.

If you plan on going overseas on a decent clip and getting the 3G version, get the AT&T one as it is unlocked out the box.

Does the white iPad discolor over time? I saw one at BestBuy that looked like it was more cream color than white. Not sure if it's just extremely dirty due to the amount of people touching it or whether it was simply due to the lighting in the store.

It kind of can in the video preview (cause the moving noise) but the actual pictures are pretty bad for it. If they used some noise motion based resolution boost like this stuff it might work, but I wouldn't bother with it right now. They kind of do something similar with the iPhone's fake digital zoom but I wouldn't count on it coming to iPad.

Lighting. The smart cover colors I've tried all get skewed a bunch by lighting too, like in certain light they look like nicely saturated colors, in others they look washed out and kinda bleh.

I can finally post in this thread now :D

Just picked up a 64gb 3g model (like a boss). What apps are good? I have an iPhone4 as well... so I'm not new to the whole iOS scene, but it's my first iPad :3

I'm a uni student, and I'm hoping to make the most out of this iPad before it becomes an unproductive toy (so far, yes - with jubeat :P)

Not as fancy. Artists like fancy. Procreate is better than all these PS apps put together, but I need a decent stylus. Waiting on the Wacom one, since all the current ones seem kind of crappy.

That's what I was wondering, I just saw this post and thought it looked awesome, then a few seconds later it dawned that it would probably be a hindrance more than a help. I might get it just to try it out though.

What's the general consensus on iPad2 now? I've been waiting to upgrade becuase I couldn't be arsed with worrying about stock problems, but I guess they should all be sorted out now? Might look into an upgrade this month. Worth it? To be honest, if it solves the web browsing memory issues, I'll upgrade probably no matter what as that was the only small drawback to the device for me.

I'm thinking of ordering the Wacom one myself to find out if the hype is justified. Please post a review here when you get yours.

I was gonna post something similar, but I noticed the edit button, which I assume allows one to configure the screen. If that's the case it would help with it's usefulness. Otherwise it's a waste, as all those commands are readily available as you mentioned.

Adobe Ideas is more in line with Procreate, these PS apps are not trying to be a one stop content creation app (except Eazel maybe).
