How I got an iPad 2, by axdenied. (who lives in Canada)

I wake up at 4 AM (EST) to experience what I'd like to call an early morning pee. Never did one of these before, so I was both intrigued and anxious to try it out.

Once my duty was done, I hopped online and decided to pre-order an iPad. (Pre-sales started at 4 AM EST)

Expected shipping day: April 15th. Nerd rage.

I go back to sleep, wake up a few hours later, and go to work while cursing at those with a day off and who can stand in line for the release of the iPad 2 here in Canada.

Come 5 PM, which is the official time at which the iPad 2 goes on sale, I decide that spending time with my girlfriend, that I see rarely, is more important than looking for an iPad.

At 7 PM I head home, thinking that all iPad 2s were sold in a 10 000 mile radius, but still decide to hit an official Apple Store right near my house.

I walk slowly in the mall, reach the Apple store.... There's 5 people in line. It's the biggest Apple Store in my province.

I take my place in the line, I start laughing by myself, I chat with the security guard and I ask him what the hell is up, why are we only 6 in line!

He looks at me, starts laughing, and tells me that everyone got theirs at around 5-6 PM, some people waited upwards of 12 hours just to get one, he didn't understand why everyone was so excited for this product.

So all in all, I came in, got in the store (which was packed) in 5 minutes, got out with an ipad 15 minutes later. They were very efficient and even though the line was VERY short, the store was still full and people constantly kept comming in.

In any case, this has been the SMOOTHEST Apple launch for me. Hell, I even scored bonus points by going out with my GF.

Needless to say, once I got out of the store with my iPad, I was still in disbelief at how easy it was to get one.

My "F*ck Yeah" moment of the day. Nay, of the Month.

It's brown on the outside and olive inside. I also got some extra wee 3 inch straps so I can clip keys, penknife and other things to the insides.

Also got a wee travel bag, I think it's called a sidekick, which is just as good. It's great if I just want to take my camera, wallet and phone somewhere (like a concert) and is convertible between a bumbag (don't use) and a shoulder bag, or just a plain bag.

Oh wow, look at me go... I am in fact lying to you.

That was the last BLACK one they had... Sorry, my girlfriend picked it up for me, and she mentioned getting the last black one... So I assumed it was 25 of 25.

Haha I was just pointing it out, I'd be excited too! Also the fact that your girlfriend went to pick it up for you makes it even better, you didn't have to deal with the craziness in person.
 
Just playing around with the ipad 2. I still think the 512 mb ram is disappointing, or apples safari is still too aggressive with tabs closing. Still my biggest annoyance with the iPad. Kill my other apps, not my tabs apple!

use a different browser maybe? Maybe you'll like Atomic or something.

Anyway I just ordered mine yesterday in Canada. 2-3 weeks begins.
 
How do you think it will be to get an iPad2 in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 3 weeks? Launch rush should be over and they shouldn't be supply constrained for 6 months like iPhone4 right?

I just didn't have $700 to spend today but should be good in 3 weeks.
 
Phew.

Got my 64 GB black wifi. Was lined up for 8 hours in calgary. There was at least 500 people in line. Will post pics tomorrow, too damn tired right now.

My red leather smart cover already has scratches in it - no idea how they got there, just regular use for less then 3 hours....

Just order it online today. I assume it won't show up on your credit card bill until it ships.

Not really no. I also had a dead pixel and after I showed him, he just went to the back and grabbed a new one for me. No questions asked.

Yeah, unfortunately they still refresh way too much for me.
I literally go from one page to another, and then back and still reloads.
Not always but still annoying.

Tru. Once you have a lot of apps open, iOS seems to put tabs on the highest priority for flushing..
 
Nah for real this is shitting me.

After locking the screen, it takes ~40 seconds after pressing the home button before the thing wakes up and then the 'slide to unlock' bar is unresponsive.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is it something to do with the smart cover settings?

Depends if you really want leather or one of the colors. If you mean the polyurethane gray and blue, the gray looks...gray, the blue is sort of like University of North Carolina blue at its best...kind of an ugly blue with warm fluorescent lighting though. I liked it during the day time, but in my room at night the lighting made it look pretty bad.

I returned it for the green one and it's pretty awesome. I only got it cause they were out of orange...not sure if I'll return it for that cause I'm liking the green a lot.

Me! I was one of the people saying it should be powerful enough to run a 2048x1536 screen for months. That said I wonder how it'd run in 720p. They say "super smooth 30fps" or something about the 1080p, but 30fps sucks. 60fps is super smooth, not 30!

You could try massaging it (and hope you don't break the glass or make it worse), or a stuck pixel fixer page like this one[URL].

Okay, so if I just do a normal sync with my MacBook, all my gamesaves will be backed up and I just do a restore on the iPad?

Anything else I should know before doing a restore?

Normal sync or right clicking the iPad in the list on the left and selecting backup will work (the latter creates a backup that stays there iirc, while syncing only creates a most recent one).

Not sure there's much more to it other than restore, then select your last backup to copy data back once the restore is done.

Otherwise one other thing you could try is updating to 4.3.1 which won't take too long. Download the appropriate firmware here: http://www.redmondpie.com/download-...2-ipad-ipod-touch-final-version-direct-links/
In iTunes option-click the Update button, select the firmware file, then let it go. It goes a lot quicker than a restore since it doesn't wipe everything, on the minus side since it doesn't wipe everything whatever problem you have might not get fixed.
 
I stopped by Covent Garden in London on launch day. Knowing that Apple staff are contractually obliged to cheer everyone that enters the store leaves me feeling a little bit cold.

It is also distinctly un-British.
 
Didn't work. Did a backup and restored the iPad. After the restpore everything is there and a-okay.

When I press the screenlock button, the image still displays but the iPad is unresponsive for a few seconds before going black. Then when I press the home button, it takes about 30 seconds for it to wake up. Exact same problem as before the backup and restore.

well i took a shot at getting one early this morning in amsterdam, I could already tell from the staffs face that I was dreamin :/

I'll be patient and wait the 3-5 weeks for my internet order to make good I guess.
 
I got my 32 black wifi iPad2 yesterday and I'm loving it so far.

A couple of questions I have so far:

- I notice not all the images in this thread (for example) are loaded (I took a crappy screenshot: http://s1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb387/FerranMG/?action=view&current=075584e1.png. Is this because an iPad limitation, or maybe because I have shitty 1mbps internet connection?

- Is there an easy way to upload pics straight from the iPad? -> I'll answer myself: Photobucket seems to be awesome and its's free.

- Are there any Whatsapp alike applications?

More as they come, but I'll be grateful if someone can help with these. :)
 
Usually iTunes store has had the quick links at the top black bar but now they've disappeared from my iTunes... Navigating without those is a chore.

Also has someone tried iCarbons skins? Im thinking of getting something to shield the back of my iPad 2 with the smart cover. Is there anything else than Gelaskins, iCarbons and Zagg's invisible shields?

That's not been my experience. Pages flush if I go into an intensive app, like video streaming, but going back in forth within safari does not. And when they do flush, they load twice as fast as before.
 
Managed to pick up a 16 gig White model yesterday - couldn't believe my luck, haha!

I've got a smart cover too, although I don't have a case fir it yet. I like the smart cover because it gives some reassurance that the screen is okay without adding bulk to the device but I'm a little concerned about the back.

Obviously I'll get a case for carrying it around in my bag, but would you guys say that you need to keep it into a case around the house to keep the back from getting scratched?

Oh, and does anybody know if the iPad 2 fits in the macally bookcase thing? I'm not keen on the iPad 2 cases I've seen so far :P .

I use IM+. The free edition is incredibly robust and I think the only difference between free and paid is paid also has skype and (I think) IRC. But other than that it logs you into just about everything else at once. It reminds me of Adium on Mac or Trillian on PC.

Anyone try Files Connect yet? Just came out last week and it's got some strong reviews. Thinking of getting it to replace Good Reader.
 
Anyone use an iRig or similar with garageband? i was looking at getting apogee jam but a) its not released yet and b) its expensive. Is something like iRig good enough to just have a mess about with etc or is the noise feedback not good?
 
Wait a minute... Is VLC Media Player gone from the App store now? I have it on my iPhone and wanted to download it for my iPad but cannot find it anywhere.
