What it means is the next release of Flash Media server will automatically detect and serve proper video to iOS devices. It's all server side, you won't have to do anything. The videos will just work. Companies would need to upgrade their servers, of course. Could take a few months, could take a year, but this will all be sorted and over with in the near future.

This is same standard Microsoft is adding to allow Silverlight videos to stream to iOS, by the way.

Its actually in alpha/beta whatever right now. I think Adobe realized that the risk to Flash Media Server was pretty substantial - especially since the only studio that has ever let a commercial movie get streamed using their system is Sony... and that was only promotional in nature. Everybody else is stuck on VC-1 for the most part.

I started reading some comics on my ipad last night thanks to the ComicFlow app -- so awesome!

Thanks to the folks in this thread who recommended it.

avplayerHD just got updated.
Supports iPad2 Dual core.
gonna try 720p later, but so far mkv subtitles of anime have no lag

EDIT: just tried a 720p tv show and I was surprised it has a subtitle. Again the subtitle was synced with the 720p mkv file

I just purchased a new vehicle with an Active Restraint Headset system (ie no headrest DVD option). I'm thinking of picking up 1 of these and utilizing my iPad2. Anyone have any impressions?

Urrgh! I'm still waiting for my new white 32GB iPad 2 from Best Buy to replace to 16GB model that was defective. I know it's not completely Best Buy's fault with their lack of inventory but it's very discouraging to wait so long without a definite pickup date. I wonder which will come in first: My iPad 2 at Best Buy or my 23 1/2 White case from Portenzo, that I ordered over 2 weeks ago? :/

Is it possible to stream the videos through the ipad and then to an appletv with these apps? Basically what I wanna do is to use the ipad as an advanced remote and then show the video on my tv.

Yes for both.
I was wondering this myself. The question is does the Plex app stream the video, or tell the Plex server to stream it? It seems it would be stupid for Plex Server to encode the video, send it to the iPad and then have the iPad send it to the AppleTV. I wanna know if it's smart and the Plex Server on the Mac sends the video to the AppleTV instead. I keep meaning to ask this on the Plex site. I want to get a cheap device for my dad's TV so he can watch all my media on his own TV instead of only his iPad all the time.

thanks for the info. I just bought it and tried one of my test files too and got no stuttering. :) I'm going to load up some videos this evening for my first extended video watching period on the iPad 2

Been looking for a decent text editor for my new iPad and I finally stumbled upon iA Writer. This is awesome - minimalistic enough while being functional at the same time. I'm really liking it so far and seeing as it automatically syncs with Dropbox I can see myself using it a lot at Uni.

is this like VLC where you copy the 720p stuff to the app and it just plays or is like Airvideo which I already have.

* so funny me. First thing I did was add this to appshopper to see if there's a pricedrop in the past so I can decide/or not to be cheap and wait it out. No pricedrosp since Dec 10. Hmm. Might just have to buy it.

Does anyone have a case/keyboard recomendation for the iPad 2? Or perhaps even let me know if case/keyboard works well on the iPad... Is there a lot of delay in typing?

I saw this one a couple days ago and it looks pretty slick.

http://www.zagg.com/accessories/zaggmate-ipad-case

Thoughts?

I have one. I don't recommend it.

In terms of the zaggmate in particular, it's heavy as hell, much much heavier than you'd expect. Very inconvenient to carry around. Plus, since it's made of the same material as the iPad, if you're carrying it in the frigid Canadian winter, it's friggin' cold, unlike one of the standard material cases. It also doesn't have great grip. You also can't use the iPad in the case so if you're walking around you'll constantly find yourself taking the iPad out of the case and putting the case down somewhere. I don't think any of these are really failures on their part, so much as I personally have different values than their design objectives.

The keyboard itself is a little cramped, around the size of my first gen eeePC keyboard. I found it took maybe half an hour for my fingers to adjust to the key spacing.

In terms of the keyboard functionality in iOS, it sucks. Arrows don't scroll, spacebar doesn't pagedown in the browser... there's a laundry list of stuff that just doesn't work the way you want it to. In addition, no matter what you're doing, you'll find yourself repeatedly switching between typing on the keyboard and touching the screen, and that's a really weird UI disconnect there. It just doesn't feel right.

Another thing I found weird is that any time you have a bluetooth keyboard attached to the iPad, the default on-screen keyboard disappears. So I ran into cases where I had my iPad + zaggmate at my desk, picked up the iPad, walked 20 feet to talk to a coworker, got some information from them... and then when I went to type it on the screen, the on-screen keyboard display wasn't there and I'd have to toggle bluetooth or go back to my desk and turn off the keyboard.

The keyboard stand works very well though, so it's a great case for propping the iPad up on a table or desk to watch a movie or play games or whatever. I prefer it to the previous pictureframe style setup I had for this use case.

I didn't pay for my unit (comped from work) but I also understand that the price is like $100 or something silly like that. Too rich for my blood.

I bought it this weekend and managed to crash it 3 times with 3 different files, so I'm back to transcoding any pre-h264 files on my own and just using the Videos app if I want to go somewhere, or using XBMC with my file server locally.

Fricking piece of shait smart cover. My father-in-law was checking out my new Ipad2 and while holding it by the smartcover it loosened and made the Ipad fall straight down on some dinnerglases, breaking the whole screen in two. Anyone konw if Apple replaces this for free?

This is namely the reason why i buy cases that fit the whole ipad, never know how people will hold the ipad.

Take it to the apple store and see what they say, i think it might cost some money to replace.

No, but your father-in-law will.

So is Gorilla Glass all hype or what? Seems like there are thousands of stories of iPad and iPhone screens breaking, cracking, scratching...? Oh well.

Ouch. @ ristlager

I have faith in my smart cover. Maybe it wasn't attached on right?? I've held up the iPad with just the magnet on the hinge n it's pretty secure. That said... I didn't swing it around or no nothing....

Add the smart cover magnet is actually very robust. It probably was attached the wrong way or something

I'm planning on buying an Ipad 2 when visiting NY (in May). Anyone know how the stock is there? Also, is it possible to activate your Ipad 2 in the store? Because that would be awesome.

I'd probably avoid buying in NY if you can, you'll have to pay more tax.

There's really no telling on the stock situation, but it seems to be getting easier and easier to snag one.

As for activating it in the store, sure. One of the dudes will be happy to get your iPad set up for you.

Do you mean I'll pay tax at the airport? What if I pretend I bought it back in Europe?

He's talking about sales tax. New York City is 8.875% for example, while Delaware is 0%. This is collected at the point of sale (the cash register in the Apple Store).

Oh, I was assuming you were coming from a different state. If you got the iPad in a different state, sales tax is a lot less than in NYC (I think sales tax would probably be around $60 or something in NYC). That's probably still less expensive than it would cost in Europe, I'd assume.

Ah ok, that sucks. But it's still cheaper than in Europe.

does anyone know the best place to follow for news on ipad2 jailbreak situation?

modmyi.com and its boards is probably a good place, not sure about the best.

Still trying to find a decent case. My iPad has engraving so I want to be able to see the back, but want it protected, so maybe something with a see-through back on it. Hrm...

When is the iPad going to support the current Apple track pad compatibility? I own a Magic Track Pad and am way too used to it. I hope an update comes soon.

um... probably never. I would bet large sums of money that the ipad will never support a pointing device like a mouse or regular trackpad. The ipad doesn't support a pointer arrow - the trackpad is made to manipulate a pointer arrow

perhaps jailbreak will provide that support.

They've had it on jailbreak for awhile.

Yeah, that's just a move in the wrong direction. A mouse is a good stopgap measure, but from an interaction perspective touch, gestures (ala Kinect) and voice is the way everybody is going to be moving forward. There are people out there already experimenting with getting gestures working with the cameras on the iPad.

Oh, I wasn't even thinking of using it as a pointing device. I'm talking about how three fingers swiping left makes the browser page go back and like four fingers up makes the desktop minimize.. tapping two fingers on misspelled words and correcting them from the menu. Stuff like that. Pointing like a mouse was the last thing on my mind when I typed that.

The iPad supports the Magic Touch Screen.

Ahh, what you mean is multitouch gestures, not the track pad. They have touch gestures you can access if you have dev access, but there's no word on a public release.

Went to one of the biggest Apple stores in the world, in convent garden and bought my self an ipad 16 gb. Is there a post for the ipad newb?

Hey @stump what do you use as a content server I think I am going to go that direction. My pc is too loud when I use my appletv xbmc to stream video.

Oh, I see what you mean.

concerning this part: "tapping two fingers on misspelled words and correcting them from the menu."

you can already do that with a double tap or long press in pretty much any text field on the ipad. Pages will pop up an option for a dictionary or replacement words, for example.

as for system wide gestures, we'll see what happens. the developer gestures that can be enabled now to switch apps or go to desktop can potentially interfere with any app that uses more than 3 fingers for gestures so it's a tricky position for Apple as enabling them for all users limits what devs can do.

I'm interested in knowing this aswell, if you find out anything please let me know.

Also is it possible to use any of Plex or Air Video as a remote for the computer? I.e. run the videos directly on the computer instead of the ipad.

If the books were purchased on the Amazon store, they should sync across with your last read position, notes and highlights etc.
