Apple iPad 2 |OT|

A direct comparison of Xoom vs iPad is thrown off by the fact that the Xoom's color reproduction and viewing angles aren't as good as the iPad's, it makes it tough to compare the aspect ratio difference on its own merits. Might have to wait for the new Samsung tabs.

But 16:10 is inarguably a better fit for comic books and widescreen movies.

It's really a use case thing. If you're a comic book fan and film buff who will be using the tablet to consume media and just surf the web secondarily, 16:10 is going to be better. And as an added bonus, you'd have access to the best comic reader app in Comic Reader Mobi (now confirmed banned indefinitely by Apple).

can anyone recommend an app that turns your ipad (2) into a secondary screen for a windows machine? i read about maxivista... are there any other ones?

edit: oh, i see air display now also works on windows. better than maxivista? anyone use it?

I'll have to disagree about 16:10 for comics being better as i read on my ipad in portrait more than landscape. Using the xoom in portrait mode is god awful.

that's not what I meant. I meant that adding the complexity necessary to make the iPad into a complete notebook replacement would diminish the overall appeal of the product.

that doesn't mean that there are no ways for the ipad to be more useful or to rely less on a PC and still be easy to use (heck, it'd be easier to use if it didn't need to sync to itunes before using it). But I feel that the people who absolutely need traditional PCs for whatever reason will not be replacing them with ipads. the ipad will always be supplemental for them.

for people who only use a fraction of a PC's capbilities, well, I think the iPad can and is replacing those PCs right now.
I strongly disagree that a notebook replacement that wouldn't be too complex can't be made. I firmly believe that what's available now sucks and can be made a lot better.

Edit: the complexity will be there, obviously. iOS is already complex. it's the good of the developers and designers to hide that complexity and provide a user interface that is both powerful and a pleasure to use. I believe that the iPad isn't there yet and I strongly disagree that it can't be good enough to replace a laptop.

...

An American comic book, the dimensions have standardized at 6 ⅝" x 10 ¼" (17 x 26 cm) = 1.53
Android tablets, 16:10 = 1.6
iPad, 4:3 = 1.33

16:9 is the best, but then again I never use tablets in portrait mode. After trying out 7" tablets, I think that has the perfect size and weight. I'm going to wait for a 7" Honeycomb/Ice Cream tablet. A 10" tablet is god awful for carrying around my workplace since I'm on my feet most of the day. 7" would slide right into my coat.

The Xoom is a terrible example of the benefits of 16:9 - it's too big and heavy, which seriously hampers the experience of using it over long periods time. 16:9 might be better for certain kinds of media consumption but it's meaningless when other design flaws impede the viewing experience.

i think 16:10 or 16:9 on a 7" tablet isn't that big a deal since it's generally so small and light anyway. I still don't think this size has enough benefits over a smartphone screen to be worthwhile but whatever.

however, in my playtime with Xoom demo models, the widescreen form factor feels bad when blown up to 10". holding it near the bottom makes it seem too top heavy like it's gonna fall over.

and there's a lot of content that works well in 4:3 portrait - like web pages - that makes the funky widescreen tablets feel worse than an ipad.

Indeed. I got some time with a Xoom at work, "feels bad" is the total sum of my experience as well.

On a xoom right now and the ratio isn't so bad. Portrait is fine to hold. Only landscape has issues when holding with one hand. Instead you have to get used to palming the back instead of gripping one side. Ratio alone doesn't make or break this thing, although I don't really feel its significantly better or worse.

Is there a good music (discovery) app that runs in the background? Vevo and Discovr are basically useless, because the music stops as soon as I switch to another app.

Still feels uncomfortable to hold the xoom in portrait mode.

Yeah I have to agree. I have used the xoom about 3 times at best buy and twice at staples and I could never get use to holding that thing. It look and feel like it is built to be used in landscape mode than portrait. If that is the future of honeycomb, i doubt i will ever own an android tablet.

I wonder if Motorola thought people who like to only watch movies without the black bars are going to jump all over the xoom.

Pandora is nice.

They don't think, that's Motorola's main issue. It's just my personal opinion but Motorola's design sensibility in both industrial design and user experience is generally awful. I did some interface design for a Honeycomb app for a client where the primary delivery was on Xoom and the newest Samsung tablet (the name is escaping me at the moment). The first thing everyone commented on with the Xoom was how heavy it was. The Samsung was much better received. The Xoom just wasn't the total package I was hoping for. Having acquired an iPad2 from work since then, I don't think I'd want to go back to using Xoom.

Does anyone have a iPod Nano?

Just curious about overall volume level and how it compares to the iPod Touch.

Also, if anyone wants to buy an iPod Touch let me know.

That's not going to help. Most 16:9 movies aren't even 16:9. They're much narrower. Especially cinematic ones.

Apple releases a another tablet that's 16:10 and then everyone will say how awesome it is.
Don't think so. The reason I bought an iPad was the 4:3 screen and I'll rage if they're going to release a 16:10 tablet.

Apple's OS revisions are getting pretty hardcore.

If they can do motivation enough for it, then I'm sure people will think its awesome. Apple is great at motivating choices that they make but this is a choice that they are not going to take. Not only would they make all iPad apps incompatible but they would also have one dreadful device to browse the web with etc.

How much weight does it add?
maybe a third? it's padded, leather and rigid, so it adds some heft to the device. but i think the tradeoff is worth it if you're looking for protection and flexibility. the stand works real well and the front cover folds back completely. the Amazon pictures give a good overview, but i can throw up some nice DSLR shots if need be.

Ok, dumb question, but in the stock email app, when viewing an email, why is there no delete button?
I have one. Using gmail and a pop account.

Maybe it disappears off the menu if you have gmail set up to archive instead of delete by default?

I didn't do anything to change any of it when I added gmail and I don't have gmail set to archive. The only buttons I have at the top when viewing the email are the inbox button, up/down arrows, move to button, an archive button, a reply, and a compose. Maybe something did get changed, is it supposed to be where the archive button is?

Edit: never mind archive button was on somehow. Odd. Thanks.

haha. I decided to download the free issue #1 of X-Men (1991) from the Marvel app, and got to a page with Psylocke. I use the panel by panel view, and guess what part of the image it decided to zoom in on?

early 90's comics, you so crazy

I just got an iPad 2 as a graduation present and I'm loving it so far but is there really no way to get music you downloaded from the iTunes store onto an iPod. I downloaded the Lonely Island's album to try out the functionality and thinking that I could just get it on my laptop later but I can't seem to redownload the album even though it's on the same account. Would deleting it from the iPad allow me to redownload them on my computer? I have a long drive today and I'd like to get it on my iPod.

No, just sync the iPad to the computer, the album will copy over. Then sync the iPod.

Don't delete it, whatever you do.

Doesn't syncing your iPad to your computer put any new apps or music onto your computer? I'd guess you could then sync again to your iPod?

I've synched it but the album didn't show up. When I try to force a synch it says that it'll delete everything on my iPad.

You set your iPad up as a different iTunes account from your computer, didn't you?

Nope, same one. The digital booklet for the album downloaded to my computer automatically as soon as I opened iTunes but all of the videos and songs have stayed on my iPad.

EDIT: Just figured it out. I hadn't authorized the iPad yet since I never hit the Apply button in synch settings. It seems to be copying now.
